AACHEN’S FAXES By Kate Pierson
I remember the summer I spent in Aachen in North RhineWestphalia on an exchange programme. I was 16 and in love with someone back in New Zealand. Or so I thought.

spent the several months of my exchange pining for him only to eventually find out he had moved on. Before the age of social media and Skype, but well after the advent of fax machines, our communication relied on e-love letters. In an almost humorous (well, for me) case of art imitating life, the Christchurch Art Gallery is showcasing Marie Shannon’s The Aachen Faxes, Christchurch Remix. The work contemplates love, loss and the longing for emotional connection across distance. The series of letters that feature in the artwork were sent by New Zealand artist Julian Dashper to Shannon while he was an artist in residence in Aachen in 1995. Excerpts of the letters have been reproduced on the walls of the gallery’s car park elevator, while the soundtrack brings the letters to life with Shannon narrating and Dashper’s brother Mark playing improvised cello music. Exploring the nature of communication in a long-term relationship, The Aachen Faxes, tells a tale of love – something we can all relate to in one way or another.

Zealand a couple of months ago, he has discovered the poetry of Cantabrian poet Bernadette Hall. Burt read Hall’s ‘The Persistent Levitator’. Barrowman and Burt also discussed great poets of our past like Allen Curnow, Alistair Campbell and Robin Hyde. Barrowman said it worried him that Curnow was disappearing from New Zealand consciousness. The discussion moved onto contemporary New Zealand poets such as Jenny Bornholdt, Michele Leggott and literary rebel Hera Lindsay Bird. Finally, Burt read two of his own soon to be published poems ‘Kites’’ and ‘My 1980’ - quaint, quirky pieces written with an incisive, retrospective eye. All thanks to WORD Christchurch, University of Canterbury, and Scorpio Books for a fabulously entertaining night!
Make your property marketing
MEANINGFUL
How do you choose the right agent to sell your home and what should you expect from them? Real estate specialist Cindy-Lee Sinclair makes some suggestions.
“F
or most people selling their home means selling their most important asset,” Cindy-Lee says. “Regardless of the type of property up for sale, home owners are all interested in the same thing – maximising their investment. One way of ensuring this happens is choosing a real estate agent to act on your behalf. What you want is an experienced professional who understands the importance of getting you the best result.”
Cindy-Lee explains that one of the better ways to identify a good real estate agent is by the process of referral. This is when a family member, a friend, or a neighbour recommends a particular agent, based on past experience.
“Increasingly too we as agents have come to understand the importance of effective marketing to bring the widest collection of buyers to a property. You need to know that the agent you choose has the skills and training to effectively market your home. It’s a good idea when choosing an agent to visit a number of open homes and watch how the agent listens and responds to visitors.” Cindy-Lee adds that once you and an agent agree to work together the first step is often for the agent to provide you with a competitive market appraisal. You should next discuss the best sale method and the range of available marketing strategies. In addition, a good agent will provide a written marketing calendar and establish a path of communication. You can contact Cindy-Lee on (03) 355 6677, or 0274 888 616. “After meeting Cindy Lee Sinclair at an open home, I knew that she was the right agent to sell our home. Cindy impressed me with her kind, friendly and professional manner. She has been an absolute “gem” to deal with. Her prompt communication, was always appreciated. Her presentation was of a very high standard and her easy going nature and genuine interest in you was the right mix to deal with all. Cindy Lee has been outstanding in all aspects of selling our home and I now regard her as a friend. Her passion is evident, she is warm, caring and a desire to achieve for you is why I would recommend her to anyone buying or selling.” Angela Bleechmore

DROP DEAD GORGEOUS Even from his earliest days as a designer and manufacturer of exquisite handbags and accessories, Deadly Ponies Founder Liam Bowden has been one to watch. And watch we have. All eyes trail every move of this adored deity and loyalists to the brand – here and abroad – continue to effortlessly love and passionately advocate for a brand that is always one step ahead of the pack. Bowden talks to Metropol about surviving in an industry where you’re only as good as your last collection.
Did you always aspire to pursue a career in fashion? I sort of fell into the fashion industry. I always wanted to have a career where I made 3-dimensional objects. At university, studying a Graphic Design degree, I took a screenprinting class and printed designs on leather, then made them into leather purses and keyrings and sold them. After that, it just snowballed to where we are today. Deadly Ponies is a true institution in New Zealand – could you have ever anticipated how widely it would be celebrated here, and abroad? No – However, it is definitely amazing. When I step back and see how far we have come and what we have achieved, it is incredible. I started Deadly Ponies with many goals, and now when I stop and think what
we have already accomplished, it’s crazy. I never would have anticipated that we would be where we are today. Luxury brands are often vocal about the challenge of remaining exclusive in an era of mass production and counterfeit goods, how does Deadly Ponies seek to retain its hard-earned status? Mass production and counterfeit goods are issues that we are constantly aware of, as we do struggle with counterfeit problems abroad and sadly in the local community. To combat this, we are constantly innovating and creating new designs without changing the product too widely. This allows us to build our signature so that people can identify our designs, and stand behind products of quality and craftsmanship.

As we grow and get more into the groove of what we do as a brand and business, we will refine and expand the range creating beautiful products that excite our customers and ourselves.
Can you talk about the challenges with contemporising the brand each and every season without diluting the aesthetic it is known and loved for? One of the core pillars within Deadly Ponies is to develop and refer to old construction techniques, methods and handmade processes. Whether it is the way a brass mold is cast or how our button holes are stitched, it is handmade, so it continues to reference the essence of the brand whilst pushing forward and maintaining a contemporary edge. What have been the most exciting moments in your career? One of our most exciting moments would have to be opening our first store in Ponsonby and working with interior designer, Katie Lockhart, to create the space. I have always admired Lockhart’s work and to have her design four retail environments is amazing. Another would be traveling to far and remote corners of the world for work, and seeing our products on those streets – it’s a crazy pinch yourself type of moment. I also have to say that it’s amazing to come into work each day and realise that everyone in the team is working together to achieve our brands goals. Are there any role models in the industry locally and abroad that you look up to or take advice from? On taking advice, we look to a range of people in different industries, not just fashion, as it is always best to hear from a diverse knowledge base and their ways ofthinking. I admire Jonathon Anderson of J.W Anderson. Anderson manages not one but two brands, travels around the world, reenergising one brand while still making both brands contemporary. It is really inspiring and is an amazing achievement.

What can we expect from Deadly Ponies over the coming year? As we grow and get more into the groove of what we do as a brand and business, we will refine and expand the range creating beautiful products that excite our customers and ourselves. For 2017 we’ve got plenty in the pipeline with a lot of projects and an exciting collaboration coming up. Do you have a favourite mantra for the brand and for yourself? At Deadly Ponies we stand by three key pillars; creativity, integrity and family. My own mantra would be, “Don’t sweat the small stuff ”.

“So much work has to go into something like this – it has been a rich and rewarding experience.”
A PAPERWEIGHT OF MEMORIES Talking to Jacky Bowring, Professor of Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University, and member of the Canterbury National Earthquake Memorial evaluation panel, you understand how memory and emotion have been integral to this project from the outset. “Memory is important in the steps to recovery.”
J
acky has been aboard the Memorial project since mid-2011, a long enough time to gather many memories of her own. “So much work has to go into something like this – the ongoing liaison with project colleagues (The Ministry for Culture and Heritage, Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Christchurch City Council and Otākaro Limited), the public, and the bereaved families. It has been a rich and rewarding experience.”
By Céline Gibson Designed by Grega Vezjak, the Memorial spans both sides of the Ōtākaro Avon River, near the Montreal Street Bridge. On the South Bank, a culturally significant Pounamu stone flanks the Carrara Marble Wall that lists the names of the 185 victims of the February 22nd, 2011 earthquake. The names are inscribed in both Country of Origin scripts and in English. Jacky reflects on what the unveiling ceremony means to her. “People can now walk a pathway close to the river as they read the names on the wall. Despite all the chaos at that time, the river kept on flowing; it was the one constant in our lives. Our memorial stands as a core, a place to reflect and remember…a vast paperweight holding the memories of a time in our history.”

As the average age of the New Zealand population continues to rise and more people are living well into their 80s and 90s, there is an increasing need for legal services that understand and respect the particular issues faced by the senior members of our community. “Elder Law” is a legal term coined to cover an area of legal practice that places an emphasis on the issues that affect those people who are nearing or who have reached retirement,

ENCORE! ENCORE! They’re young, keen and ready for action! Meet Tom Eason and Holly Chappell-Eason, partners in life and partners in a pocket-rocket theatre company that has taken up residence in the Common Room building, located near the North Quad of the Arts Centre.

In 2012, they both graduated from New Zealand’s prestigious drama school, Toi Whakaari – Tom with a Bachelor of Performing Arts in Acting, and Holly with a Master’s Degree in Directing. This thespian couple have produced a respectable tally of shows in our major cities, not to mention some months working with a Berlin theatre company, but it’s evident that love of home has brought them back to Christchurch. “This is the city we grew up in and where we first fell in love with theatre. To get the opportunity to take a space in the Arts Centre is incredible. It’s beginning to reclaim its place as an arts hub, so it’s the perfect place for us.”

Two Productions secured their business future with help from Christchurch City Council’s Industries Support Fund, and their desire is to give back to the community by providing a theatre focused on developing and showcasing original works, utilising the skills of theatre makers nationwide. Two Productions will also run education programmes and workshops to mentor young actors and theatre makers. “We want to bring everything we’ve learned and use it to create our own theatre culture for young theatre makers and audiences,” Holly says. “We want

Nanda shares with Metropol some of her top tips for interior design:
1.
Lend an ear: it has always been a priority for me to first find out what inspires my client and to understand their personality because this is how I create a concept that is bespoke and speaks to them. I ask about their interests and where they come from.
Behind the scenes:
INTERIOR DESIGN In the quaint township of Rangiora resides an international storyteller – of the visual kind. Worldly, inspiring and a great listener, Nanda Poort-Rammers of Twin Rivers Interiors is a contemporary hunter gatherer of stunning furnishings and an expert in delivering a fully integrated interior design service from concept to creation.
H
er highly celebrated work is characterised by a classic, sophisticated and distinguished aesthetic that expertly experiments with an elegant colour palette and textiles.
Yet what makes Nanda’s practice even more endearing is how willingly she broadens her design horizons to accommodate the unique desires of her clients.
2.
Identify the starting point: once I have built a mutual understanding with my client, I will identify a starting point that is pertinent to what they have shared. It may be a painting, or a piece of furniture, or perhaps where they were born – whatever it is, I take this element and treat it as a starting point for their design.
3.
Embrace and experiment with depth: when I have agreed a starting point, my goal is to create layers to introduce depth. I always say I am not building a house, but rather helping to make a home. Colour, textiles and texture all create depth. Explore Nanda’s stunning showroom at 83b Ivory Street, Rangiora.

Modern technology meets
TIMELESS CRAFTSMANSHIP WovenVeranda has found its cottage industry comfort zone in Ohoka – and the elegant wicker furniture is transforming outdoor spaces.
L
ast October, Lisa Lloyd and Guy Gunn’s lives changed forever. The import business was originally a hobby for their Darfield friends who had bumped into a school pal five years ago
that ran a Scandinavian-designed wicker-furniture business in the Indonesian village of Cirebon. The hobby outgrew them, so they asked Lisa and Guy to take the reins. “It’s also widely exported across Europe, but we are the only New Zealand suppliers,” Lisa says. Hand-woven by trained craftspeople, the outdoor and conservatory furniture is pure character and authenticity in naturals to greys and whites, without the mass-produced uniform starkness. Designed to cope with European extremities – from minus 21 degrees to the highest UV protection, it’s modern technology melding with the charm of age-old craftsmanship. The wicker is aluminum-framed and fastened with stainless steel so it’ll never rust. From dining table and chair sets to comfortable high-backed chairs and couches, the hardwearing, solid-core synthetic ‘cane’ is a dead ringer for the real thing. It comes in different-sized weaves and patterns with durable interchangeable cushioning. “Some customers just buy a piece at a time, and I encourage people to compare with others of similar quality,” Lisa says. “They invariably come back - as we’ve cut out the middleman.” WovenVeranda also sells authenticated sustainable-teak dining and coffee tables, fire-heated sea grass tablemats, colourful cushions and Klippen pure-wool throws. Visit by appointment or en route to Friday’s Ohoka Market at 33 Birchdale Place, Ohoka. Phone 021 968 361. The team will also be by Christchurch Home Show’s entrance, March 2426. Visit www.wovenveranda.co.nz (deliveries nationwide).

DENIM M I N E D N O By Kate Pierson
There was a time when even the concept of denim-on-denim made me shudder.
A
bout ten years ago when my boyfriend rocked up to a soiree with my friends dressed in a same-weight, same-wash denim jacket and tight skinny jeans, the superficial siren inside of me stirred from her dormant state and I must confess I spent the evening trying to coax him out of the jacket to reveal the more socially and sartorially acceptable t-shirt underneath. Oh the arrogance!

T
he daughter of magazine publisher, Don Hope, and fashion icon, Paula Ryan, Bridget Hope has returned to Canterbury following an international publishing career. She has created a new shopping experience for women through Magpie Style, the elegant fashion showroom she has established in Ohoka. For the past 20 years, Bridget’s name has been synonymous with the fashion industry – a career coup owing entirely to Bridget’s own perseverance and talent. Her senior management skills have earned her roles as publishing director of Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and Cleo in South East Asia. Closer to home, she was the editor of Simply You. Bridget’s refreshingly down-to-earth persona immediately puts to bed the Devil-Wears-Prada stereotype and the Magpie Style fashion showroom has inherited her sophistication and warm nature. The business’ customer-centric philosophy is simple but significant – personalising the shopping experience. “So many women find shopping a struggle,” Bridget says. “They either get conned into something that doesn’t suit them or lack the confidence to try on styles outside their comfort zone. Many of us also don’t have the time or will to visit every store. “When you make an appointment at Magpie Style, the doors are closed and you can focus on yourself without any outside distractions. This is also one of the key reasons I have based it in the tranquil setting of Ohoka. When women make a purposeful trip to see me, they find themselves more present in the experience – and in turn, more relaxed.”

F
ast forward to 2017 and I’ve made peace with this aesthetic. In fact, I’d go as far to say as I adore it. Sure it’s a hallmark of the eighties, but there’s something enticingly rebellious about this former fashion faux pas, and who doesn’t love a challenge? The most obvious ‘don’ts’ when it comes to donning denim on denim include avoiding accessorizing with more denim – no hats, shoes or handbags of the same ilk and ditch the need to coordinate your top with your bottom half because a matchymatchy approach spells certain style disaster. A fashionable reminder that rules are made to broken, denim on denim is appearing in collections and wardrobes all over the world. Just remember, darker denim will be your best friend when it comes to hiding any troublesome spots.

PIONEERING SUPERFOOD PRODUCTS
Glenn Hughes of brand new business Kiwi Superfoods is pioneering a range of concentrated superfoods all produced in our natural New Zealand environment.
G
rown in pristine conditions the products are concentrated so they can easily slot into busy schedules, as an alternative to having to eat lots of a particular type of food that contains the same nutrients. Hailing from a superfood background, Glenn has been exposed to a raft of
different products but Blackcurrant Skin Extract and Broccoli Sprout Powder stood out over all the others. “I saw firsthand the positive impact these products were having and wanted to tell the rest of the world about them”. Certainly the Kiwi Blackcurrant has enjoyed its fair share of good publicity –
most recently the virtues of this product were extoled via a One News report claiming that ‘the humble New Zealand grown blackcurrant is making international headlines as a superfood to watch out for in 2017’. For more information about the full range of Kiwi Superfoods visit: kiwisfs.com

A STUNNING SMILE A set of beautiful white teeth can make you look younger, feel more confident, and smile more often – and the more you smile, the happier you feel.
“O
ver time, the food and drink we consume discolours our teeth,” says Sparklewhite Teeth director, Charmaine McFarlane. “It’s amazing how many people say ‘but I don’t smoke or drink coffee’ so I ask – ‘do you drink green tea or red wine?’ The tannins cling to your teeth and soak into your teeth pores and enamel. Anything you consume that changes the colour of your saliva stains your teeth – juices, curries, spices – people forget it’s not just about smoking and diet coke.” With 15 branches nationwide, Sparklewhite Teeth is the largest cosmetic teeth whitening company in New Zealand. Established in 2009, Charmaine was also one of the founding members of the New Zealand Cosmetic Teeth Whitening Association, which was formed to protect the public and is backed by the Ministry of Health. With a wealth of experience behind the fully registered and qualified Sparklewhite team, clients can be assured they are in safe hands. “We are passionate about what we do, and we consistently keep up with all the latest technology, techniques and training,” she says. “There is no sensitivity involved with our treatments, and it’s so relaxing that some people even fall asleep – we’ve had a few snorers!” Whether you have a special occasion coming up such as a wedding, birthday or job interview, Sparklewhite Teeth can help you look your best. ecause the nervous system controls the function of virtually every cell, tissue, organ, and system of the body, part of a chiropractor’s role is locating and correcting the areas of the spine that may be interfering with the system, says Doctor
Mary Patterson, of the Christchurch Wellness Centre. “If you have muscle tension or soreness, it may be impinging on the nervous system, which affects the structure of the body – and misalignment of the body affects the function of the body.” Along with stiff, sore and achy joints, other symptoms include headaches, dizziness and lack of concentration. The interference occurs as a result of stress, whether it’s physical – you may have had an accident, chemical – you
are not eating well, or emotional – something upsetting has happened in your life. “We can release that interference through chiropractic adjustment or muscle trigger point work, using our state-of-the-art equipment, and our hands.” Offering gentle, effective and affordable chiropractic care, Mary has over 10 years of experience in the industry. She offers real value for money, with a focus on providing a personal, flexible service, and clients are treated oneon-one in a private room. A second chiropractor, Doctor Priyanka Taunk, also works at the centre. Recently welcoming qualified and experienced on-site nutritionist Claudia Oxford, Mary has other services such as massage and acupuncture, available on request. eing the ever-ambitious bunch we are, we’re already looking ahead to the wardrobe imperatives for those cooler temperatures. Leather and lace is high on our agenda, and for good reason. While they may be polar opposites – lace represents delicacy and leather embodies a tough persona - they are the perfect companions. A lace top paired with skinny jeans and a bomber is the distilled essence of aesthetic perfection while a lacy slip underneath a waterfall jacket is material magic. Offering a brilliant contrast, leather and lace will help you to play up the different sides to your personality. The welcome tension between these opposites is celebrated season after season so you know the investment is worthwhile.

WEARABLE ART By Kate Pierson

oth borne from fierce, untamed imagination and innovation, there is a cyclic relationship and blurred lines between these creative forms that sees one often influencing the other, especially in the case of art inspiring fashion. Long dubbed members of ‘the mutual appreciation society’ the hand-in-hand relationship between art and fashion has a rich history with beautiful examples as far back as 1937. At this time, a brilliant meeting of minds saw Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali partner with distinguished fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli to create The Lobster Dress.

Both borne from fierce, untamed imagination and innovation, there is a cyclic relationship and blurred lines between these creative forms. The true visionaries of our time who are following in these footsteps include the late Alexander McQueen and Louis Vuitton. Moreover, the fact that one of the most extravagant fashion showcases takes places each year at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York speaks volumes. In honour of the current awards season, which simultaneously celebrates high fashion and performing arts, we’ve put together some of our favourite wearable art pieces that you can make your own.

A ubiquitous sight in our own backyard, New Zealand is celebrating this timeless innovation through the Aotearoa Bike Challenge (1-28 February). The New Zealand Transport Authority led competition sees organisations and departments of businesses across the country vying for the top spot. There are six team size categories to ensure a fair competition between contestants with points earned for the greatest levels of participation. To date (at the time of writing), 1002 organisations are involved with 8054 participants on their bikes. A total distance of 438,268 kilometres has been covered via 32,904 trips. It’s not too late to join – to sign up visit www.lovetoride.net.

A TRULY RARE OCCASION Romantic Lansdown Festival, situated between Halswell and Tai Tapu, welcomes the great baritone, Eike Wilm Schulte, one of the finest German opera singers of this generation, for three special concerts on 19, 22 and 26 February at 8pm.
T
he performances are delivered in the large, elegant Golden Room of Lansdown House, 132 Old Tai Tapu Road. A star of The New York MET, Covent Garden, Milan’s La Scala, Vienna’s famous State Opera, among other stunning world-class venues, Herr Schulte’s visit to New Zealand offers a rare occasion to hear a master singer in performance. His supreme singing technique is viewed with great admiration (and not a little envy) by his national and international colleagues. If you love opera and great singing or just a sense of occasion, book now. Bring a pre-performance picnic to enjoy in Lansdown’s renowned gardens. Scenes from three of the greatest German operas comprise Herr Schulte’s programme: Mozart’s evergreen Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte), Beethoven’s immortal ‘Fidelio’
and Wagner’s one great comedy, his virtuosic ‘Mastersingers of Nuremberg’ (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg). Mr Schulte has given more than 300 performances of this trio of operas throughout the World’s great opera houses, a staggering statistic by any standards. He will be joined by Dorothee Jansen in the dramatic compilation of arias and duets from the Magic Flute and Fidelio and will sing three wonderful solo scenes from The Mastersingers of Nuremberg. With New Zealand’s finest accompanist Terence Dennis on piano and Haydn Rawstron’s storyline narrations, these three performances promise to be hugely enjoyable (and comprehensible). For festival details, see www.lansdownsummer.com. Tickets $65 (including glass of bubbly) are care of the Court Theatre box office. Phone 03 963 0870 or visit www.courttheatre.org.nz, click TICKETS and scroll).

MOCKTAILS SPOTLIGHT RECIPES FOOD WINE BARS & CAFÉS RESTAURANTS
By Melinda Collins
IN THE
Whether it’s a re-birth of flavour appreciation, a by-product of lower official alcohol limits, or the tail-end of a global health kick, Generation Z are drinking less alcohol than the generations that came before.
W
hatever the cause, we can give thanks, with the lower alcohol preference giving rise to the ‘mocktail’. Yes, slowly but surely, the artisanal, ingredient-focused ethos that has taken over culinary culture has found its way behind the bar. No longer does the sober driver selection consist of Coke or Sprite, with
up-market bars and restaurants tasking their mixologists with creating new ranges of low and no alcohol beverages, from a pomegranate mojito mocktail, to an orange-lime relaxer, or even a classic virgin bloody Mary.
Vibrant reds, emerald greens; fresh mint and crushed ice topping the glass; a wedge of lime; a rim of salt, mocktails are a chance for bars to experiment with juices, citrus zest, fresh herbs and spices, tonic water and bitters, creating new flavours and textures and even pairing them with meals… just like their boozier counterparts. For the health conscious, there are an increasing range of fancy non-alcoholic substitutes, including turmeric shots for a quick hit of health, charcoal-activated water for a delicious detox, and coldpressed juices so you get none of the nasties and all of the nutrients. So why not give it a go? After all, when it comes to mocktails, you can’t mock it until you’ve tried it.

Culinary innovation
FROM AN INDUSTRY ICON
At breakfast, lunch or dinner Dux Dine exudes happy vibes and a truly welcoming ambience. From the moment you are greeted just inside the door, to the time you leave the restaurant, to the words “We hope to see you again soon,” you feel like you have been a special guest.
“O
ur aim is to give our guests the best service possible with a relaxed, casual and friendly, yet totally professional approach,” says Gareth Thomas, Restaurant Manager. “All our wait and front of house staff are focused on achieving this. “We’ve been very fortunate in being able to recruit staff committed to the hospitality industry and who are passionate about making our product appealing to as broad a range of clientele as possible. They are also proud to be part of the Dux Dine family and to embrace our way of doing things.” Gareth adds that the front of house team is now really diverse with both female and male staff from different ethnicities and backgrounds. “Our team is some 25 strong – some are casual staff, but 70 percent of them are fulltimers dedicated to a career in hospitality. This is their livelihood and they want to do the best
they can to give our guests exceptional service. They bring considerable mana, style and flair to the restaurant because they know the standards the industry expects.” Dux Dine’s guests are certainly aware of how good the service is. This is reflected in consistently excellent reviews. “Service is such a focus for us that we are very honoured to have found favour in this area with so many diners.” But Dux Dine is a package of excellence. You can’t have service without the food to bring to the table. Several of Dux Dine’s kitchen staff have been with the restaurant since it was established producing dishes to both excite and nourish the guests. The meals are original and delicious and use sustainably and ethically sourced ingredients wherever possible grown locally. “The Mediterranean style of cuisine we specialise in is the epitome of healthy living and our chefs delight in working with fresh, new and interesting produce. We have some tried and true favourite dishes on the menu that our guests absolutely forbid us to take off. The pea and halloumi fritters are sacrosanct, as is the baked lime and coriander crusted fish and of course our pizza selection. But we have also introduced some new dishes. The wild-caught prawn pasta is quite simply divine as is the lemon and lime cured ceviche. So just like our city itself we are a blend of the old and the new, the familiar and the innovative.” To experience Dux Dine’s service and food for yourself visit the lovely turn of the century villa at 28 Riccarton Road. GH ROCKY ROAD Where would we be without our mum? She is the kind of mum who was on the school board of trustees, who would drive us to sports practice and games and then get home and make us a home-cooked meal. We always make sure that we look after our mum, especially on Mother’s Day. Our mum doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth — the only sweet things she really enjoys are coconut rough and peanut slabs. We made this rocky road for her on Mother’s Day which is kind of a mix between the two. She liked it. Dad did too!

Ingredients 250g Whittaker’s 50% cocoa Dark Block chocolate 250g Whittaker’s Creamy Milk chocolate 1 cup desiccated coconut ¾ cup raspberry liquorice, chopped into chunks ¼ cup roasted peanuts ½ cup marshmallows, cut in half ½ cup Fresh As freeze-dried raspberries (optional)
R E S TA U R A N T & B A R During his 2013 official visit to New Zealand we were privileged to be honoured by the Prime Minister of Thailand as the Thai Select PREMIUM in recognition of our authenticity.
Method 1.
Grease a 18 cm x 18 cm baking tin and line with baking paper. Allow some of the baking paper to hang over the edges so it is easy to remove the rocky road once it has set.
2.
Break the chocolate into pieces into a metal bowl and gently melt over a pot of hot water. Combine all of the other ingredients and half of the freeze-dried raspberries in a bowl. Pour over the melted chocolate and mix well to coat.
3.
4.
Pour the mix into the prepared tin and spread evenly. Smooth the top with a spatula. Tap the tin on the bench to remove any air bubbles. Sprinkle over the rest of the freeze-dried raspberries, if using.
5. 6.
Refrigerate for 3 hours or until firm. Remove from the tin and wait to soften slightly before slicing into pieces.

CUISINE & CAFFEINE ENTREPRENEURS
This café’s theme sums up the CBD’s vibe eclectic, sociable and unique. Its clued-up young owners are bringing back originality and style.
B
ink and Luke Bowler from Southland and proud Cantabrian Chris Meyer, who front Black and White Coffee Cartel, are onto something big. Its 2014 inception, on the Victoria and Peterborough Street corner, was fate. The brothers parked beside the light-filled site, when
enquiring about another location. They saw the for-lease sign, and history was made. Chris recently nearly signed up for his own business. Fatefully, he met the Cartel brothers and was too impressed. The former Federal Coffee House, Hornby Robert Harris owner and Harewood Café Raeward part-owner, will soon open two of his own personally themed Black and White Coffee Cartels in High and Lichfield Streets. Caffeine-obsessed Bink had a funky Wellington venture, and set-up experience in Melbourne, Bangkok and Hawaii before falling for coffee-loving Christchurch. Plans to extend his Cartel family are not too far away. The direct-imported coffee is micro-roasted onsite, like an authentic European original. After the fit-out, Luke swapped tradie life for in-house roaster. He’s in heaven sharing the “roasting to cup” experience. It’s like backstreet France, but Christchurch through and through. A wall entertains with retro/random pictures. If you want one, you can swap it for another of equal size, providing Bink approves. The un-named rock-star portrait line-up makes for great guessing games over great coffee. Bink, Chris, and shortly Luke, as parents, know supporting families is important, so local entrepreneurs make their boutique cabinet food. “It’s essentially about spaces bringing people together over coffee,” they say. They’ve exciting plans in coming years – which could include you. Keep an eye on these guys. The word “Cartel” is no accident.

pop up series devoted to the exploration and development of Māori cooking techniques and ingredients, Hiakai has recently been established by Chef Monique Fiso. From an after-school job as a sandwich-hand in New Zealand at just 14, to the Michelin starred kitchens of New York City, Monique has been tackling our misunderstanding and under-appreciation of Māori food traditions. Her Hiakai menus offer a modern take on things like boilups, Māori-meets-French (tuatua with kawakawa berry mignonette), and desserts using indigenous ingredients such as kokohi, harakeke and kawakawa. His days as a field chef in the New Zealand Army taught Māori chef Charles Royal much about the bush as a means of survival. But today he runs a thriving business based on indigenous delicacies from those same native forests, where he has been a leading figure in the rediscovery of wild herbs and edible ferns.
{ Today horopito (Māori pepper), pikopiko (edible fern fronds) and kawakawa (Māori bush basil) appear on menus in many of New Zealand’s top restaurants, and are causing a stir with international culinary enthusiasts as the unique flavours of this wild produce adds spice to the New Zealand food identity. As we wake up to New Zealand’s deliciously unique culinary heritage, a commercial hangi kitchen has opened its doors right here in Christchurch. Not only does Christchurch Hangi House offer a traditional three-meat hangi, but there is also fried bread, pork bones and watercress, pan fried flounder, fresh crayfish and of course chop suey and raw fish.

QUINTESSENTIAL
IRISH SPIRIT
The Craic radiates the cosy warmth and intimacy of the true Irish pub. Open from 10am on St Patrick’s Day, 2017 promises to be the grandest St Paddy’s Day ever.
T
he first since their big fit-out, The Craic will be alive with the exuberant sounds of Celtic music, magical Leprechauns, the energy of Irish dancers, free giveaways and a photo booth; a fun way to immortalise the most excessive day of the year. St Patrick’s Day falls on Friday this year, so take the day off and paint the town green. With a great location in Riccarton, The Craic also offers Guinness and cider at great value. Breakfast will be available when the doors open at 10am. Start the day with a full breakfast for just $15.00. Mouth-watering Steak and Guinness Pies will be available all day. The Craic’s great line up of bands will keep you cavorting on the dance floor as long as there is still Whisky in the Jar. The fun starts with the eclectic music of Eddie Simon from 1-4pm. Dance in a sea of oversized Guinness hats and shamrocks; sing-a-long to “Dirty Old Town” and other Irish favourites with The Stout Fellows from 4.30-8.30pm. The Shameless Few are guaranteed to incite high spirits until the early hours playing from 9pm-1am. For an unforgettable St Patricks Day join fellow revellers at the cosiest Irish pub in Christchurch, and find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Irish eyes are smiling at the Craic! REPUTATION Sala Sala is a name synonymous with exceptional cuisine. A year after purchasing and renovating a beautiful two-storey villa in Merivale, Sala Sala Restaurant has reopened under new management.
W
ith a focus on Asian fusion fare, the delicious menu features a range of carefully chosen dishes, says new owner and ex-chef, Victor Cheng. “Our menu is simple and focused on specialist dishes. We still have traditional Japanese cuisine, such as sashimi and teriyaki, but we have redefined the menu to offer a mix of cooking elements, with influences from the Sala Sala chefs who have worked in specialist seafood restaurants in Singapore and 5-star hotels in Macau.”
Dishes such as the Roast Peking Duck served with steamed pancakes is a popular choice, he says. “About 80 percent of our customers order the Peking Duck.” Upstairs, the fully licensed restaurant features three private dining rooms for functions, intimate gatherings and special occasions, offering customised deluxe menus. Originally from Hong Kong and with over 30 years of experience in the industry, Victor and his wife Sharon have previously run upmarket Asian-style restaurants in Timaru, Lake Tekapo and Auckland, and know exactly how to keep their customers happy – fresh, exciting fare, combined with excellent, friendly service. Located at 142 Papanui Road, Sala Sala is open Tues-Sun for lunch from 11.30am until 2pm with dinner from 5.30pm until late. For booking enquiries, contact 355 5932. Metropol February 16, 2017 51
LLEGRINO E P N A S SUMMERCOCKTAILS By Nicholas Henare
It was a hot 32-degree afternoon in the Garden City and San Pellegrino had invited me to try some recipes for cocktails with a mix of their delicious Italian beverages.
The San Gaudenzio
Love on the Rocks
If you’re looking for an assertive cocktail with the warm taste of hazelnut and the acidic kick of lime, then this one is a doozie. Mix 9ml hazelnut liquor and 30ml of fresh lime juice in a chilled glass from the freezer, add San Pellegrino Chinotto and crushed ice, and decorate with a slice of fresh lime. You can impress yourself with how easy it was to create a taste that any mixologist would be proud of.
A couple of these and you’ll fall in love! The great taste of blood orange and gin goes down all too well. Mix 40ml of gin in a glass with crushed ice, add 20ml of Campari and 70ml of San Pellegrino Aranciata Rossa crushed ice and a slice of orange. If you love the taste of summer fruits and refreshing cocktails, then a San Pellegrino will marvel the taste buds. What I love about these recipes is it’s not a science, just have some fun and play around with it. Trust Italians to make something so simple sound so exotic and taste so fabulous.
The Classic Italian 75 The Classic Italian 75 has the great taste of prosecco and my alltime favourite, gin, with the tarte taste of lemon. Your ingredients are 20mls gin, 100 mls of San Pellegrino Limonata, 100ml prosecco and a lemon slice. Fill the mixing glass with ice to chill glass or put in the freezer again. Empty ice out when the glass is chilled and add the gin, Limonata and Prosecco. It’s really that simple.

Coco Espresso is a cruisy little café that instantly makes you feel like one of the regulars – and it’s their one-year anniversary.
O
wner and barista extraordinaire, Nick Lange, is pretty happy with how the business has been supported by his coffee fans over the last year. The comfortable courtyard couch and the inside booth seating is made for relaxing on a sunny afternoon with a cup of Vivace bean coffee, a selection of magazines and great music. The fun staff members make a smooth brew with a good kick of caffeine. There is dairy-free creamy almond milk and Nick has his own way of perfecting the black espresso. Phoenix organic drinks are in the cooler and there are T-leaf blends and cabinet food with affordable tasty sandwiches through to orange and date scones - but it is the fast, well-made coffee that regulars return for. Nick uses Innocent’s biodegradable packaging for the take-out cups. The super-cute limited-edition dog or cat designs are the talk of the town, and he welcomes fourlegged friends in the courtyard with treats and water bowls. The building is owned by Designmade Furniture who showcase their changing interior designs in the café and courtyard.
Coco Espresso, where everyone knows your name, is just around the corner of Bealey Ave on 400 Barbadoes Street and there is plenty of off-street parking. Text your coffee order to 020 410 68403. Open 7am until 3.30pm from Monday to Friday.

As we explored the possibilities, we stumbled across the all-important ‘colour theory’ basics. We’ll happily impart some of our wisdom for you to factor in when renovating the hues in your residence. Our main area of interest is colour context – a rather complex discipline that looks at how certain colours behave in relation to their peers as well

Although there is a well-established argument that black is not a colour, it plays an important role in a high contrast décor environment as the anchor, helping to tame all of the
competing personalities. From complementary colours (two colours on opposite sides of the colour wheel) right through to a tetradic colour scheme (two distinct pairs of complimentary colours – two warm and two cool), there are myriad ways you can experiment with compelling contrast in your space.

but the long-term reality is proving a challenge. But why is this? Entrepreneurial development comes from a vision to meet a demand. There is a primary drive in business to present, offer or cater for current needs – however, perhaps that is where we went wrong. A focus on the current, rather than the future. Consider the published difficulties that the hospitality sector of Victoria Street is facing. It is a vibrant, busy sector of the city that presented great opportunity in the wake of the earthquakes, however, the Council blueprint has arguably
disconnected it from the city. With development and new business comes risk. And in the unknown environment of post-quake Christchurch, the opportunity presented came with great risk. While a number of businesses embraced the opportunity, meeting a need and a demand in an artificially inflated environment, the question has raised itself, what is sustainable? While some have been able to build on the opportunity and shift gear, direction and even location, to ensure their risk is minimised, others haven’t been so lucky. However it isn’t all doom and gloom! On the eve of the sixth anniversary it is possible to look around the city and

While many are frustrated at the slowness of the anchor projects and infrastructure, it has been a far bigger job than anticipated – but we will get there. Perhaps our expectations were flawed from the outset. We have gone from recovery to rebuild to regeneration. We just need to ensure we are balancing the line between opportunity and good business sense. He assured the Russells the chairs were of excellent quality and well worth restoring with new coverings. A little TLC and they would be totally rejuvenated and ready for another 17 years. Steve whisked the chairs away from their home in Akaroa and within a week they were back, resplendent in top quality black leather. “This was efficient, professional service. We are absolutely delighted with the new look. “The black leather is smart and contemporary and also more practical than the original light green. Accessorising your asset
WITH STYLE
“I have proved home staging works,” says Jayne Morgan of The Finishing Touches. “I’ve furnished and styled houses that have been on the market unfurnished for a lengthy period and only days later they’ve sold, often for higher prices than expected.”
H
ome staging is like a mini-makeover for people’s greatest asset. An empty space lacks soul; dressing a house with quality furniture and accessories enablers buyers to visualise their own furnishings in that space. It creates the “wow” factor that maximises buyer appeal and their emotional connection to a house. Home staging is especially effective for showcasing houses on the Internet. Up to 90 percent of prospective buyers begin their property search on-line. A stylishly presented property is more likely to result in those buyers taking the next step and arranging an on-site viewing. First impressions do count. Jayne is an interior designer who knows what style of furniture is going to work in a particular house. Her enormous warehouse is full of a broad range of pieces so she can furnish, style and accessorise any home from the traditional and character to the very modern with everything from furniture and art works to bed linen, rugs, cushions and lamps. “I love keeping up with furniture and decor trends so we regularly replenish and refresh our stock to make sure houses look spectacular. Only a top notch presentation is good enough for me – stylish, smart and luxurious. Very “on trend” at the moment is the use of greenery and silk flowers.” To discuss the presentation of your home you can contact Jayne of The Finishing Touches on 021 882 379 or email Jayne@TheFinishingTouches.co.nz.

STEPS for building SUCCESS
Building or renovating to create your dream home opens up many exciting possibilities, but there’s so much that needs to happen before construction can begin. If you’re thinking of building your next home or improving your current one, Unity Construction have created a checklist to simplify the process and help you get a head-start on your building journey.
Set a Budget: Go through the details of the plan with your builder to get an estimate cost and breakdown by room. Knowing how much, and where you’re spending money can influence your home’s design.
Attention to Detail: After planning and designing your new home, your architect will give the working drawings to your local city council and start the building consent process.
More Planning: Your builder can’t give you a definite price until the building consent is granted and all plans are finalised. Your builder should start preliminary pricing and talking to subcontractors now to keep your project running on time.
A Registered Master Builder Quote Will Include: a. A copy of the appropriate Registered Master Builder contract b. A fully itemised quote and summary of costs from a Registered Quantity Surveyor c. An inclusions and exclusions list d. A selections checklist e. The option to sign up for a Registered Master Builder guarantee f. A projected timeline for the project g. A copy of the Disclosure Information, as required by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) guidelines.
1. 2.
Find Your Perfect Match: Your first step is choosing a Registered Master Builder. With such a big investment you need the peace of mind that comes with the credentials, experience and guarantee only they can offer. A Master Builder can help you find the best professionals, and work with them to bring your home to life.
3. 4. 5.
Start to Plan: When you’ve chosen the architect who understands your vision for your home, ask for a fee proposal, which will include the cost of a concept plan to get your ideas on paper.
Develop Your Concept: Once you have approved the plans, your architect will create full working drawings so you, and your builder can see how your home should be built.
6.
Patience: Building consents take around 21 working days to be approved. The city council will make sure your plan is up to code and won’t interfere with people living around you.
8. 9.
7.
Fix the Cost: When your plans come back from council, your builder can give you a fixed price contract. Thanks to the preliminary pricing, most of the work will already be completed.
10.
Sound Systems: Communication is the key to success. Ask your builder about their systems and processes for keeping you and their team up to date at each stage of your home’s construction. If a renovation project requires a variation from the original plan, a Registered Master Builder will communicate with you and seek your approval first to keep the whole process running smoothly. If you have any questions or want to know more about building or renovating, the friendly team of Registered Master Builders at Unity Construction can walk you through this process and keep you updated at every stage along the way.

Their goal is raise a minimum of $14,000 towards cancer research in New Zealand. With 60 New Zealanders diagnosed each day, this is an incredibly selfless and worthwhile act. Lyn, an experienced cancer research fundraiser and London Marathon competitor, is coordinating the fundraising effort while simultaneously helping to coach Jill through the grueling cardio and weight training, which requires 4.30am starts each day. rue to the adage that certain things get better with age, this highly sought after variety is taking front and centre stage thanks to its new sensory dimensions. Made from fresh Arabica coffee sourced from high altitudes in the Colombian highlands, the coffee was harvested three years ago and then meticulously aged resulting in a complex taste with elegant woodiness, softened fruity notes and a smooth velvet-like texture. The aging process involves a completely new method pioneered by the Nespresso experts who wanted to benefit from the effect of aging but by using specific controlled conditions. This included regulating the time, oxygen, moisture in the air, light and atmospheric pressure. A rotation system was also implemented for the bags of harvested coffee to ensure the ideal aging process.

orking across Canterbury and the South Island, the highly respected business offers everything from project management, painting and plastering, to asbestos removal, meth testing and decontamination. Established in 2006, with current owners Gary Lawson and Andrew Kyburz taking over in 2012, Natural Living Homes shifted focus from new builds to repairs following the Canterbury earthquakes. It also incorporated the asbestos removal side of the business. The efficient team of professionals provides a ‘onestop shop’ for clients, says Andrew. “Our experienced staff are dedicated to the entire process and offer a consistent, high-quality service. “Our full time staff and dedicated sub-contractors work together as a team under the one management umbrella. We use only the best materials, provide the highest standard of
workmanship possible, and have a proven record of quality – our repeat clients and referrals are testament to this.” A Class A certified asbestos remover with highly qualified staff and the latest certified removal and decontamination equipment, the business can efficiently and safely perform all aspects of asbestos removal to the highest standards and MBIE guidelines. “We also have a dedicated team for the testing and decontamination of methamphetamine contaminated properties and use the latest systems to bring the property back to safe Ministry of Health levels, while minimising removal of linings and belongings.” The company has a comprehensive Health and Safety policy. “We work with multiple insurance companies and project management firms, ensuring everything is independently monitored and audited.”

Building a home can be a challenging exercise. For some, however, it can be a rewarding and enjoyable journey. “We want to take that rewarding journey with you,” says Anthea Johnson, Sales Consultant for Homes by Maxim.
H
omes by Maxim are well-known for producing high quality, unique home designs, but our main focus is, according to Sales Consultant Rachelle Hunt, “our service to our clients. They’re looked after throughout the whole process.” Reviews on the website support the fact the team work very closely with every client. “You’re not just given a design and told to choose a colour,” Rachelle says. “We go shopping with you. We’ll take you to find what you’re looking for to make your home truly your own.” Homes by Maxim is fast building a reputation for beautiful homes. The dedicated team of designers, builders, and sales consultants pride themselves on their attention to detail, use of quality products, and a completely transparent process that keeps clients informed and involved. Since partnering with award winning Philip Bidwell Architecture, the approach to creating homes that are as much personal
sanctuaries as functional living spaces has become even more integrated. The new show home in Flemington, Lincoln, reflects this philosophy. “It’s no run of the mill show home” says Sales Consultant Peter Prue. “The four bedroom house highlights the very best of Homes by Maxim’s innovative design and superior build quality. “The sense of space in the kitchen,

THE
AZTEC AESTHETIC By Kate Pierson
Having been to Mexico and encountered some of its mindboggling history, I’ve long had a fascination with the culture, particularly its material creations.
N
eedless to say, I’m a hopeless romantic when it comes to falling in love with the ‘Aztec Aesthetic’ that has seemingly permeated every nook and cranny of our home décor landscape. Named after the nomadic empire of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican people – ‘the Mexicas’, this décor pays homage to the vibrant colours that are still synonymous with Mexico today.
Geometric patterns are a protagonist in any Aztec themed visual narrative – from tiles to accent cushions. Geometric patterns are a protagonist in any Aztec themed visual narrative – from tiles to accent cushions; you can also create geometric patterns with furniture to create a complementary story. The sharp and clean lines of Aztec designs work effortlessly with mid-century modern décor. Best introduced sparingly, Aztec accents have found the form of rugs, lamps, throws and even plants – the ever sharp-looking (pun intended) cactus is a star in this show. Iconic artist Frida Kahlo, who continues to be widely celebrated as a feminist icon, was heavily influenced by Aztec design and her artwork makes an invigorating addition to any space craving visuals that are richly evocative of this hero-worshipped epoch.

INNOVATIVE BUILDING IN THE BLOODLINE It would be fair to say that Nick Parsons has innovation and building in his DNA. A second generation builder, Nick has certainly inherited his father’s gift of the gab.
ounder of eponymous company, Parsons Construction, Nick has built a business that is predicated on creativity, smarts and accountability, which has a lot to do with the intrinsic qualities of the staff members. “The work we do is tactical but creativity is also important to us,” Nick explains. A Registered Master Builder and Local Supreme Winner in the 2016 House of the Year Awards, Parsons Construction is a ‘quality over quantity’ firm. “It is great to be recognised by your industry and respected for the work you are doing. Of course it benefits our profile and we appreciate that, but we really value the trust and respect for our brand.” Clients certainly value this too and the fact that Nick sets high standards for his staff when it comes to client communication. “On each and every job we undertake; we are committed to establishing what the client wants from the outset. “We want the best for the people we are working for. That’s why we are very transparent about costs from the outset producing an extensive estimate. We also invite our clients on site to enable our foreman and builders to build a relationship with them. This helps to build a mutual level of trust and empathy.” It’s evident that this trust and respect extends to the business’ strategic partnerships too with Parsons working closely with architects to produce an outstanding result for clients, best exemplified by the business’ website at www.parsonsconstruction.co.nz
Parsons Construction Ltd is an established Christchurch construction firm , we’re registered Master Builders that have been building in Christchurch for over 20 years. “Specialising in architectural housing and commercial building”.

he Dodge RAM 2500 is massive; massive on features and massive in size. I didn’t refuel it while I had it but I wondered how massive that would be too. It was so big the individual tire pressures would come up on the dash every time I started it and told me which ones were deficient! The sound system was incredible and more suited to a London night club than a truck, and I say truck, because I was sitting at the same height as the buses I would pull up next to. Truth be told, it was a tad disconcerting at first. Trying to find a park in a mall preChristmas I imagined that Wagners “Ride of the Valkyries” would be playing as I drove over all other cars, crushing their pathetic tiny carcases beneath me. You’ve got the 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel engine: virtually indestructible in design, the Cummins Turbo Diesel is engineered to the tolerances, durability and power of semi classed big rigs. Rated at 276kW and 1084Nm, the torque delivers strength for towing and hauling and
the Diesel engine delivers with maximum towing capacity of over 6 tonne. One of the things I wanted to know - who was the main client for such a behemoth? The answer: people towing large boats or heavy loads who need a durable car/truck hybrid. It kind of made sense. The engine features a next generation Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) System and an ultra-efficient Diesel Cooling System with an 11 blade fan and a smart diesel exhaust brake. The Cummins Turbo Diesel engine is packaged with the 68RFE six-speed automatic transmission, which includes driver-adaptive shifting and three multiple clutch packs, dual filters on a dual stage pump and an independent lubrication cooler. Is that enough technical information for the machine heads out there? I could go on, but in plain speak, it’s as big as it gets. It even has its own air distribution system where in extreme heat or high altitudes, the RAM Active Air system reads outside conditions and automatically switches to intake cooler air from the grille. So Armstrong Prestige has got one of these for you to take a look at if you’re looking at moving that Kauri log from the back paddock.

My first introduction to Subaru was a privileged one. I was involved with the sponsorship on the Ashley Forrest Sprint and got to hang out with Possum Bourne and his vehicles back in the day.
T
oday, my hair is much shorter and things have only got better with the performance and my experience with the Subaru WRX. The team at Armstrong Motors were great to deal with and reintroduced me to what felt like an old friend. Technology and style go hand-in-hand with this little beast and I found it hard to not want to take corners that little bit faster and take off that little bit quicker. Boasting 18 inch alloys, in manual or lineartronic at 197kW, it had me excited from the get-go. Air conditioned with 6.2-inch touch screen with a 6-speaker sound system that offers the same quality to match the ride, the fine lines of the WRX interior are great. Sports bucket seats that live up to their namesake and refined leather stitching provide the finishing touch and top-notch detailing that is quintessentially Subaru.
Technology and style go hand-in-hand with this little beast. With a 2 Litre Direct Injection Turbocharged, this model sounds powerful because it is. It’s a machine that’s built for performance. Subaru is adapting from the rally to the street and it shows in the WRX. The bonnet scoop and the rear spoiler just add to the charisma and the surround sensors are a great feature too with a light on the wing mirrors alerting you to any traffic sitting in your blind spot. This bonus makes that nippy little manoeuvre on the motorway safer. It’s a great vehicle that speaks to the thrill seeker in all of us – check it out.

A lot of my friends have owned Mitsubishi over the years and I’ve got a lot of good memories with the brand.
I
got a Lancer LS Sedan, 109kW (RRP $30,690) but there are several versions throughout the range with a choice in sedan or hatchback meaning there’s pretty much something for everyone. A lot of my friends have owned Mitsubishi over the years and I’ve got a lot of good memories with the brand. It’s always good to see brands developing, mastering the art of bang for buck to ensure you’re getting a car that’s trustworthy on performance and design.

‘Comfortable’ is a word I’d associate with this model; the LS is really a commercial vehicle for a company’s fleet stock and I enjoyed the opportunity to change pace and see what people are getting to drive. Practical and modest, it reminds me a lot of a company car I once had. The GTi is the sports version with a kit to take the Lancer to a new level of performance – the Lancer SEi and the Lancer GSR. All of them come with “standard features”. When we say “standard features” these days they are features that are still special to me: the blue tooth, steering wheel audio controls, LCD display, a USB port, rear view camera, light sensing headlights and rain sensing front wipers are just a start. Daniel Cook, Head of Sales and Marketing says, “Lancer is a brand that is very well trusted by New Zealanders. Backed by our 10-year Diamond Advantage Warranty, Lancer offers excellent value and peace of mind for our customers, which is why Lancer continues to be one of New Zealand’s most popular small sedans.” It’s definitely worth checking out the Lancers if you’re looking for a medium sized sedan or hatch.

THE ART OF

It’s hard to not get excited when Jaguar New Zealand brings the adrenaline of a race track to Christchurch city.
W
hen I got the call to attend the event which was held at a section of the old Wigram Airfield, I really did feel my pulse quicken. A few lucky Cantabrians including myself were lucky enough to experience some top-notch fun in one of my all-time favourite wish list drives.

A hands-on introduction into the raw mix of power, performance and agility that the brand is renowned for. This wish list includes the brand-new Jaguar F-type, 280 kW, 2995 cc, which is capable of achieving 0-100 in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 275 kmh. The Art of Performance Tour, an urban and dynamic driving experience, got people behind the wheel of the Jaguar range, for a hands-on introduction into the raw mix of power,
performance and agility that the brand is renowned for. Exciting the senses across three different drive experiences, drivers were challenged with the Jaguar Smart Cone system, which creates an exhilarating track that tests your responses and that of the vehicle. Basically I drove like a bat out of hell around a slalom
course which demands a fast straight and break and swerve, lighting up your next target with green flashing lights. You drive as fast as you can to each destination. My co-driver from the Jaguar team was yelling at me to ‘control it more’ and ‘speed and turning as sharp as you do, doesn’t win the race’. To hell with that, in my first round I came fourth and I’m taking that puppy and mounting it on the wall. We also did a steep climb and descent with the Land Rover Terrapod to show off Land Rover’s legendary capabilities. Marcus Shaw, Marketing Manager of Archibalds Christchurch, said it was “An experience normally reserved for a race track and for those that own a Jaguar vehicle. The Art of Performance Tour is open to lovers of exceptional drive experiences”. The winner of each session and the overall winner and runner-up from Christchurch will be flown to Queenstown in March to compete in the Art of Performance Tour showdown, for their chance to win a trip to New York to experience the adrenalin of the Formula E Street Racing Series. Thank you Jaguar and Archibalds for allowing Canterbury to get a taste of how good Jaguar can be in such a unique event.
