ith Canterbury Fashion Week next week, and our latest cover a fashionable nod to what we can expect from this year's show, I've been thinking quite a lot about the subject. Generating billions of dollars per annum in New Zealand, fashion is the untameable beast at the heart of consumer culture. The chameleon like nature of the industry keeps loyalists to 'what's hot and what's not' on their toes, and leaves the rest of us who consider ourselves a 'work in progress' rather perplexed. All of this 'threads and kicks' talk has inspired some nostalgic and rather cringeinducing memories for me as I reflect on my style – or rather unstylish evolution. ROLLICKIN TIMES By Céline Gibson

Lick your lips, and tuck in those bibs, for Rollickin Gelato is set to make your September a sweet one!

J

ed Joyce, the young entrepreneur behind the most tempting treats in town, is super excited his second Rollickin Gelato café is soon to open. “We will provide our signature, hand-made gelato and sorbet, plus a sweet cabinet and organic espresso. There’ll be chat bars up close to the ‘scooping’ action.” The café, situated on the ground floor of the Boys’ High building, will also occupy the street-front terrace of Worcester

Boulevard, and will feature a bespoke communal table, already named ‘The Longest Table’. “It’s a table for patrons and passers-by – anyone who just wants to rest up and enjoy the vibe.” Jed’s driving philosophy is about providing the best experience without impacting the environment. “We source our milk from an organic farm in Rangiora – happy cows – you can taste the difference. Everything we do here – from

paper napkins to packaging – is about zero harm and sustainability.” When asked what’s his own favourite sweet tooth treat, Jed says it depends on his mood. “For a sorbet - pomegranate and berries; for a gelato - either the peanut butter ‘n’ jelly, or the salted caramel.” Considering how far he has come since the days he began ‘scooping’ from his gelato cart, post-earthquake 2013, in New Regent Street (still in operation at Margaret Mahy Park), the altruistic and visionary Jed Joyce undoubtedly deserves his dessert!

More than half of the Arts Centre is now restored, but it requires another $35 million to complete the work. Arts Centre Fundraising Manager Susan Henson says the Arts Centre is grateful to Johannes for capturing the restoration with his stunning images. “The Arts Centre is a unique, historical treasure in Canterbury and these photographs give a special insight into the care and attention that’s gone into saving it for future generations. This is a chance for individuals and corporates to purchase their own slice of our city’s history, while helping to ensure that this incredibly important restoration project is completed.” Following Restore, the bright, lofty upperfloor Pūmanawa (meaning ‘natural talent’) can be hired on a weekly basis by artists, photographers and community groups at a cost of $300 plus GST. • Restore opens mid-July, from 10am to 5pm. • Free entry, with photographic artworks and other merchandise available for purchase. one on one

Sweet on 1. Cakes by Anna (CBA) has taken Christchurch by culinary storm, and is an institution now in its own right, could you have ever predicted the trajectory of the brand’s success? Well, that’s a nice thing to say. I never planned to be a full-time cake maker, so no; I definitely didn’t predict that I would be making a living from doing this. I have never really been much of a planner and prefer to just adapt, and take what life throws at me. I’ve always said that CBA has grown organically; I started at the Christchurch Farmers Market in 2012 and started taking orders from there. The business has grown quickly, but I’ve been able to hold the reins on it and control the direction of things.

Photography by: Naomi Haussmann

A

dmirers of pretty cakes that are nothing short of scrumptious have been sweet on Cakes by Anna for half a decade now. The eponymous business has inherited its owner Anna‛s charming and unpretentious nature – an enduring recipe for success. Anna talks to Metropol about navigating the challenging but equally rewarding terrain involved with being a start-up.

12 July 06, 2017 Metropol

2. How have you been able to cut through the noise in a pretty competitive market? While there are a few cake makers in Christchurch, I don’t often feel competitive with other companies. That sounds totally arrogant, but I think that because I have quite a distinct style and approach, people who go for the style of other companies wouldn’t even consider us, and vice versa. With our wedding cakes, I often get asked to make perfectly iced fondant cakes which I don’t (and can’t) make, so I’m happy to send these people to other business who specialise in that sort of thing. My cakes aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, and I’m not going to fight that. There are always going to be others coming into the market that toe the line between inspiration and imitation, but I think I have a loyal customer base and a strong brand that can rise above all that. 3. What are some of the challenges associated with being a start-up? Um, everything. Some days I wake up and wish I could go to work and have someone tell me what to do. Or call in sick once in a while. There isn’t much distinction between what is ‘work’ and what is ‘life’, but I feel privileged to spend my days doing something that excites and challenges me. The first few years were hard work, where I was working seven days a week and wasn’t looking after myself well. I now know my limits, take holidays regularly, and take care of myself. I have a really nice life so I can’t complain (but I still do).

n Anna 4. Are there any particular milestones you’re most proud of? I wish I had kept a tally of how many cakes I have made since September 2012 so I could throw an impressive number in here. I think just the fact that I’ve managed to provide cakes for so many celebrations in the past five years is pretty cool. CBA is now old enough that I have customers who have ordered cakes for their engagement, wedding, one year anniversary, children’s first birthday...etc. 5. What advice would you offer to other entrepreneurs who have a concept they want to breathe life into, but are finding it hard to ‘lean into the fear’ of the unknown? Just do it, but expect it to be really (can I swear here?) hard. Find people to help you with the parts that you’re not good at. Hang out with people who get you, and even better, who tell you you’re amazing. Even if they don’t mean it. My hot tip - the shower is a really good place to cry. 6. What does a day in the like of Anna look like? Every day is quite different, which I like. Tuesday to Friday, my alarm goes off between 4am and 5am. I bake and ice the cakes in the morning, and get the days orders done by 9am. Then it’s often coffee and breakfast, emails, odd jobs, and I will head back to the kitchen at some point in the afternoon to get ahead for the following day. I have become a real morning person, the hours between 5am and 8am I call the ‘golden hours’ as no one calls or texts me and I can get so much work done. On Saturdays I am at the kitchen by 4am as it’s my busiest cake day. I try to have Sunday off, and Mondays are a kitchen free day but I usually end up doing cake related activities. During wedding season, my kitchen hours increase dramatically so that I can get all my wedding cakes baked and iced. And when I’m not on cake duty, I am usually eating or thinking about eating, or talking about eating. In the spring/ summer, I attempt to keep a vegetable garden and I like running around Hagley Park or walking in the hills. I suppose I should also mention that I have nice friends and family that I spend lots of time with; would hate people to assume I was a crazy cake lady.

There are always going to be others coming into the market that toe the line between inspiration and imitation, but I think I have a loyal customer base and a strong brand that can rise above all that. 7. Do you have a favourite ‘ride or die’ expression for pushing through the tough times? Yes lots, but I will keep it tame in case my Dad reads this. One of my favs; ‘No’ might make them angry, but it will make you free. If no one has told you, your freedom is more important than their anger. Nayyirah Waheed

Jamie is your true Kiwi farmer – hard-working, no nonsense…and yet, he has this other side where he creates such exquisite paintings. This is the reason for New Zealand Nature Speaks - to showcase Jamie’s exceptional talent.”

Min has selected 15 large landscapes (with dimensions around 1.2 metres x 700 millimetres) for the exhibition. Award-winning adventures “We’re elated,” says Melissa Landrebe, Managing Director of You Travel Ferrymead. “To be honoured by your peers for excellence in your chosen profession is very special.”

elissa is referring to the awards received by her team of travel consultants at the annual conference of the First Travel Group on 27 May. In a weekend of displays, training and motivational presentations from speakers such as Shaun Quincey – the man who rowed across the Tasman – the small team from You Travel Ferrymead scooped up some prestigious awards. “We won Top Shop for APT river cruising, our Senior Consultant Tanya Cross was named Top Consultant in New Zealand for the First Travel Group, and Senior Consultant Rosie Still was nominated for the Aspiring Cruise Consultant Award. As well as that our entire team received high achievement certificates.” Melissa says there are very stringent criteria that have to be met to win these awards and she is immensely proud of her consultants’ achievements. “We are all passionate about the travel industry and absolutely love it. We make sure we travel extensively ourselves to increase our knowledge and we undertake regular ongoing training. We may have some 60 years of combined experience, but there is always something new to learn to pass on to our clients.” You Travel Ferrymead may reach even greater award heights. The agency has been nominated for the single best agency award for Travel Agents’ Association New Zealand (TAANZ) – that’s across all brands of agencies – and is the highest award possible in the travel industry. The team is down to the final three and will know the outcome at a Gala dinner on 30 September. The very best of luck! You Travel Ferrymead is located at 960 Ferry Road. Phone (03) 384 2700.

SERVICES FACILITIES “We now have outstanding professional premises to go with our leading-edge laser refractive surgery and general ophthalmology services.”

D

r Ian Dallison, the surgeon and clinical director of Laservision Eye Clinic Merivale, is absolutely delighted with his practice’s brand new, purpose-built facility on the northwest corner of Papanui Road and Heaton Street. It’s easy to see why. Externally the black and white clad building is striking and stylish. Inside, the 320 square metre space is full of light, with wide passage ways and high ceilings and a generous reception and waiting area that exudes ‘wow’ factor. The building was designed by architect Robert Weir, in collaboration with Dr Dallison so that it would function effectively as a medical practice.

“Everything works just as I had envisaged. With a fully-speced operating theatre, four consulting rooms, a diagnostics and set-up room along with staff facilities, we have a clinic that will serve us well into the future. Our patients just love the place – it’s about a total patient experience - warm, friendly and very inviting.” Contract Construction completed the build in nine months and with landscaping designed by Chris Goom Landscapes, the

facility is very much in keeping with the residential nature of the location and with neighbouring properties. “It’s wonderful to be in one place again after several years of working out of various sites. Here we can continue to be one of New Zealand’s leading providers of laser eye surgery.” Call Laservision Eye Clinic Merivale on 0800 52 73 71 for a free no obligation assessment to find out if the LASIK procedure is right for you.

he team at Pier Law is now seeing more instances of clients looking for ways around this financing issue. “It’s becoming quite common for parents to help their children get into their first home,” say Bill Herbison and Caroline Davey. “They might do this in a number of ways – from taking a share in a property with the child, through to lending or gifting money, or even providing a guarantee to a child’s lender secured by a mortgage over their own property.

“It’s great that parents want to help out, but there are liabilities and responsibilities associated with these various scenarios. So it’s very important for parents and children to seek legal advice as to how to proceed and to make sure they put adequate documentation in place.” Bill and Caroline explain that if parents have a share in a property a decision should be made and formally recorded in a property sharing agreement about who is responsible for paying the ongoing

operational expenses or perhaps a portion of the mortgage. What is to happen with the division of proceeds from any future sale of the property may also need to be determined and if assets are exchanged, wills should also be updated.” Pier Law welcomes enquiries from first potential home buyers and their parents about funding options. Call the team on (03) 366 5540 and arrange an appointment at any of their three offices.

olarising facts and figures aside, this doesn’t mean we should ignore the many merits of the menswear industry, which is a heavyweight in its own right, with an annual global turnover of $402 billion. And if the dollars don’t dazzle, then the latest looks to land on the style scene will. ‘Man stuff ’ is our tongue and cheek way of introducing some must-have wardrobe and grooming additions into your significant other’s life in a low maintenance fashion – pun intended. 1. Arm candy: ok, in this case it’s shoulder candy, but, semantics aside, this is a direct hit when it comes to functional style. Deadly Ponies’ Creative Director Liam Bowden has drawn inspiration from the ocean for this collection. Bowden translates these notions via the introduction of rich ink bovine leather, tightly coiled shearling and iridescent brass highlights.

2. Pen pal: a polished aesthetic owes to the final touch accessories. The dress pen has an air of sophistication about it that adds a generous touch of gentleman to a garment, like a suit jacket or shirt. 3. Armed with attitude: there is no overstating the statement a striking wrist watch can make. An investment that promises longevity (provided it’s quality), a timepiece can transcend generation after generation surviving the tides of sartorial change if it possesses classic good looks.

4. Back to basics: a capsule wardrobe compromised of fundamentals that lend themselves to alloccasions gets a big tick in our books. Going back to basics is the first step in creating an asset-rich collection of apparel that can fulfil its potential all year round. Think great fitting pants, tees and longsleeve tops as a starting point. 5. The smell of success: a signature scent is the final ingredient to an inspiring look. It takes the sensory impression you are creating from something one dimensional to a multi-dimensional impact.

o demystify the ‘retro’ concept, it has linguistic origins rooted in Latin and the ever-chic France. In French, ‘rétro’ is an abbreviation for ‘retrospective’ which goes right to the heart of the theoretical concept. Rather than referencing artifacts of yesteryear, retro style seeks to refer to modern things that display characteristics of the past. There are superlative qualities to the fashion evocative of the retro era - typically the 1940-1990 epoch – and we like what’s on offer.

THE TECHNOLOGY BENEFITING OUR TEETH Have you been thinking about replacing your black mercury amalgam fillings? There are many reasons people want metalfree, tooth-coloured fillings, which bond to the tooth. The decision to replace functioning amalgams can be a personal one. However, with modern dentistry, there are several viable alternative filling materials available.

S

afety protocols are used for removal of the amalgam, before the tooth is restored using the material of choice. Each material has its own benefits and limitations, and deciding which to use is based on several factors. The two most frequently used materials at Dentistry on Merivale are composite and ceramic. Composite: This tooth-coloured, metal-free material can be used as a direct replacement for small to medium fillings. It’s composed of small ceramic particles, bound into a resin or plastic matrix. One physical limitation of the material is that it’s intrinsically not as strong as amalgam, so cannot be predictably used for long-term replacement of larger restorations. There are several types and manufacturers of composite. Dental Ceramics: These form a large family of tooth coloured, physiologically inert dental restoration materials. They are probably as close to ‘ideal’ as modern technology allows in terms of durability and appearance, but tend to be more costly, as the process involves a lab fabrication step that entails more than one appointment. There are single appointment porcelain fabrication systems, but the team finds the best long-term results are obtained using a 2-step technique. Dr David Walsh has been practicing amalgam-free dentistry for over 20 years and is highly experienced in the procedures involved. Feel free to email, ring or visit for more information.

anterbury Swim School, based in Hornby/Yaldhurst, boasts a tropical 26° atmosphere, and two pools, one 27° and the other, 32°. “There are substantial benefits to keeping your fitness and skills up over the winter,” Jenny says. “It’s a myth stopping swimming over winter reduces the possibility of getting colds and flu; these are viral infections caused by contact with an infected person, not by getting a wet head.” Jenny and Huia, with more than 45 years coaching and teaching between them, say they find children who swim year-round tend to be healthier, and it’s easy to see why. The warm atmosphere is ideal for those with respiratory problems; the deep breathing swimming requires promotes a high intake of oxygen to the brain and blood.

Not only will your respiratory system benefit, but so will the lymph - the body’s internal cleaning mechanism. Lymph transports toxins from the cells to the blood, releasing them from the body via the lungs, kidneys, intestines, and skin. Lymph is transported through the body by muscle movement, not by the heart. And how do we move our muscles? “With exercise!” says Huia. “It’s great to see children swimming and enjoying themselves. And when we’re happy our brains produce endorphins that not only ease pain, but boost the immune system. It’s a win-win.” So, swim - have fun - stay healthy!

SNUFFLE FOR THE

TRUFFLE By Nicholas Henare

You might wonder how I ended up with my nose buried in a freshly dug hole on the side of a hill in North Canterbury on a blustery winter’s day.

I The truffle is the hero of the dish.

was hunting the elusive Perigord Truffle; one of the most sought-after dining delicacies. With the help of Sophie, a truffle hunting dog, and Gavin and Anne Hulley from Amuri Truffiere, we were in for a delightful afternoon savouring this most fun of fungus. Keeping an eye out for ‘pushups’- where the soil is pushed up from the growing truffle - we tread carefully through the Hazelnut and Oak Trees which host the truffles. They have a symbiotic relationship. Gavin Hulley has his nose to the ground to bring the Kiwi version of the highly-sought after French truffle delicacy to restaurant tables. South African immigrants, Gavin and wife Anne, planted their first truffle trees in North Canterbury in 1997. Truffles thrive in limestone-rich soils like Amuri Truffiere’s in Waikari. Gavin and Anne would like truffles to be used from fine dining right through to funky cafes, as a little goes a long way, especially when the truffle is the hero of the dish.

For instance, they work really well when encapsulated in a ravioli, or even a pie, as the aroma gets trapped, and one bite releases the aroma and taste. They’re harvested during winter, and depending on summer rains, they start forming underground about February, with the harvest usually forming June to August. We were lucky, and managed to get the first truffle of the season and sat down to Gavin preparing us truffle infused scrambled eggs on San Francisco Sour dough with truffle soup washed down with a bit of Moët. We were obviously gathering for the upcoming Festival on 15-30 July - you get to take advantage of Gavin and Anne’s knowledge and hard work at the annual Truffle Festival. Find out more by visiting www.canterburytrufflefestival.nz. Get amongst it and try this epicurean delight soon.

THE TRUE TASTE OF MAGICAL JORDAN From Petra, the red rose city carved in the mountains, to the famous Dead Sea, Jordan personifies true and authentic beauty. It is the jewel in the Arabian Kingdom’s crown.

I

Subhi Jabri receiving the Award of Excellence from the late King Hussein of Jordan

t is no surprise, therefore, that against such a magical and romantic backdrop, one of the country’s finest and most successful catering establishments, Subhi Jabri & Sons Co, found favour and fortune with the patriotic people. It was a recipe for success. Capable of wooing even Jordanian royalty with its fresh, locally sourced fare, the business found life through the passion and ingenuity of founder Subhi Jabri in 1935. Subhi’s palpable love for his work was felt until his very last days and his legacy vibrantly lives on in the products pioneered by sons Yousef and Mohammed Kheir who have carried on in their father’s footsteps to always preserve the family name. A delicious taste of Jordan has arrived in New Zealand through Subhi’s grandson, Mohanad, and business partner, Nick, who are justly proud of strengthening the family brand to fulfil its potential. Specialty

products include Jabri’s very own handmade Baklava, an exquisite premium treat that has perfected the art of a rounded and pure flavour that doesn’t fall into the ‘sugary’ trap of less authentic recipes. A sophisticated conclusion to any dinner party, the Baklava is joined in the culinary range by equally delicious siblings. ‘Baraziq’ toasted sesame cookies that melt in the mouth are on offer, as well as delicately coated chocolate dates that delight the palate with the perfect crunch of almond nestled inside.

AN EXPERIENCE THAT RESONATES By Nicholas Henare

Situated on Cashmere hills is one of the brightest gems in luxury accommodation that I have ever discovered.

H

ackthorne Gardens is one of Christchurch’s most historic and largest houses built in 1928 as the family home for Archibald Henry Anthony, from Anthony Harper Lawyer fame. It has a wonderful feel to it. With classic leather seating and divine décor, the panoramic view of the garden city adds a remarkable touch to the Asian/ Western fusion dining experience. Hackthorne Gardens caters for small conference groups, weddings and of course, couples seeking that special getaway. The honeymoon suite is pure

pleasure and the service sits at the same level. Making myself very comfortable in the library with a gin and tonic gave me that great Gatsby feeling of yesteryear and then a lunch with so much flair served in the dining room took me to the height of modern cuisine. All the amenities are on site, which is what you would expect from a boutique hotel, but there’s panache at Hackthorne Gardens I haven’t experienced before. Its 5-star quality rating is a good place to start, but like all great ladies, there is a

mystique that needs to be savoured. I could direct you to the website but its beauty must be experienced in person. Call and book in for a tour to savour the atmosphere of a truly stunning hotel. Like great food and fine beverages, let Hackthorne gardens titillate your senses like it has mine. It has access to some great Port Hills experiences but the best experiences lie within. The service is impeccable, the food divine; its name will resonate in the future as one of quality and fine accommodation at our very back door in Cashmere. Hackthorne Gardens, I salute you.

The splendour of this extensively refurbished and strengthened house supports a natural heritage taking you back to a Christchurch of the 1930s. The house gardens are contoured by stone from the local Halswell quarry. The luxury boutique accommodation experience enters the international marketplace with elements of the Art Deco era and hopes to delight the high-end traveller without high-end tariffs.

he restaurant continues to develop its ‘social dining’ formula, with a diverse menu of shared items, served banquet style in the traditional Kiwi family table-sharing fashion. The evening menu showcases some of the best vegetarian and vegan food in Christchurch, along with a selection of steaks served hot off the chargrill. One dish in particular to watch out for is the stuffed, rolled, and slow roasted ½ pork belly.

Professional, casual service with personality, in a relaxed, sophisticated, and welcoming environment.

The home of

shared dining After a brief hiatus The Monday Room has relocated to High Street and re-branded as TMR Restaurant & Bar. The new location offers three intimate dining areas, and an expansive dinner menu available from 5.30pm until late, 7 days a week.

In addition to the sumptuous savoury fare, TMR offers a delightfully decadent dessert menu, including in-house made soft serve sundaes with flavours changing throughout the week. Although the location is currently a little tricky to find, this hasn’t deterred guests from finding their way back to the beloved restaurant, and as always, bookings are advised. If your ideal dining experience includes professional, casual service with personality, in a relaxed, sophisticated, and welcoming environment, TMR is the place to be.

A world of

FINE WINES TO DISCOVER

– Bergerac wines

Suzanne Geraud’s family have owned the vineyards of Chateau des Ganfards in South-West France for six generations. For the last two years, she and husband, Peruvian Ricardo Lazo, whom she met in New Zealand, have been distributing a selection of its wines in stores locally and online.

F

rom 28 hectares near the small village of Saussignac, in the wine region of Bergerac, Suzanne and Ricardo offer five Chateau des Ganfards wines. A Bergerac RosĂŠ, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, three Bergerac reds, blends of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and a very special Saussignac 2005 dessert wine, a blend of Semillon and Muscadelle, aged in barrels for twelve months, quite unique in New Zealand, Suzanne says. For many years, the Bergerac region has been in the shadow of its near, more famous neighbour, the Bordeaux region.

Ricardo Lazo & Suzanne Geraud

Fortunately, thanks to vineyards like Chateau des Ganfards, Bergerac wines are gaining greater recognition. With the Tour de France passing through Bergerac this month (Stage 10 on July 11), the region is likely to receive a lot of international attention. So are its products – plums and apples, walnuts and truffles, foie gras and, of course, excellent wines. Suzanne has studied viticulture and oenology extensively and currently works

as a winemaker in Canterbury. Chateau des Ganfards wines are available in cases of six bottles online, and individually at selected outlets in Christchurch and its surrounds. Try them at wine tastings in July: Ballantynes 8th and 15th, and at New World stores, Lincoln 7th and 14th, Ilam on the 15th. Visit www.chateaudesganfards.com for more information about the winery and the wines.

hey head up a team of four chefs, talented and well-travelled artisans, who are passionate about food and have all worked in top restaurants and hotels in South India. The menu reflects the influences found in the food of the five southern states of India, but also includes dishes familiar in other regions of the Indian Sub-continent - Chicken Tenali, Chicken Chettinadu, Chicken Hyderabadi, Biryanis, Andhra Fish and Andhra Chicken 65. Other favourites are chicken, lamb or beef curries, including famously fiery dishes from Goa and Andhra Pradesh, specially cooked with different bases and ground spices. There is also a selection of fish curries from each of the Southern states, and soon, dosa, a crispy, savoury pancake will be back on the menu. South of India offers a relaxed setting with

plenty of parking. It has a full bar service and a wine list specially created to complement the food menu. Or if you prefer, BYO wine. The restaurant seats large groups, but will also cater, and deliver items from the menu. See the website www.southofindia.co.nz for contact details, and for more updates follow the Facebook page. As well as a takeaway menu and a delivery service, all menus include vegetarian options, and all meat is halal. For bookings and more information, call 03 388 0898. The restaurant is open seven days, 12pm-2pm, and 5pm-9pm.

WE HOPE YOU FEEL LIKE A LADY (OR GENT) OF LEISURE WITH THESE GOODIES TO BRIGHTEN YOUR WINTER DAYS.

H

igh tea began in the mid-1700s as a meal for the working man. Usually served between 3-4pm, it consisted of tea with cakes and sometimes even cheese on toast. It was a meal taken standing up, hence the name ‘high’ tea. Fast forward a few hundred years, and our contemporary definition and realisation of this culinary concept is definitely more regal and romantic. From mini cucumber sandwiches with fine teas served in bone china (pinkies at the ready), through to moreish macaroons and the traditional trimmings – scones with lashings of cream – these special occasion treats will seduce your sweet and savoury teeth. Some of the most famous interpretations can be found at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, The Ritz London and the Hopetoun Tearooms in Melbourne. We’re firm members of the high tea appreciation society, so much so, that we’ve invested time in tracking down some of the essentials so you can bring high tea celebrations into your own home. From divine recipes to giving your table the royal treatment, we hope you feel like a lady (or gent) of leisure with these goodies to brighten your winter days.

WHAT NEXT FOR ARCHITECTURE? Cymon Allfrey

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE OF LIVING ENVIRONMENTS LOOK LIKE? ARCHITECT CYMON ALLFREY OFFERS HIS INSIGHT.

E

xploring the many varied opportunities that exist out there, TVNZ’s What Next? asked viewers across the nation questions to provoke thoughts on what opportunities and risks the future could bring. For me, in particular, it got me thinking about the possibilities and opportunities that exist within the way we live. Architecture is about embracing a solution to living while balancing social responsibility and environmental

56 July 06, 2017 Metropol

practices. Technology is then an addon to the process, there to assist our way of life. The way we currently practice suggests that technology and environmental outcomes are mutually exclusive, yet I believe they need to be considered together. Architecture so often has a focus on the past as we reflect on the positive outcomes that have been achieved before, rather than looking towards the future.

When I think about the opportunities that exist with architecture, technological advancement is the primary focus. We are already seeing how technology can make better decisions for us – consider self-driving cars that understand physics in a better way than humble human beings. There is no stopping us achieving homes that operate in the same way. If we stop thinking about the environmental outcome and shift to a technology focus we will be able to

Architecture so often has a focus on the past as we reflect on the positive outcomes that have been achieved before, rather than looking towards the future. achieve homes that satisfy how we want to live. Essentially taking our homes from analogue to digital. We are already using technology in our living spaces to create warm, safe environments. Through the push of a button, remote from our homes, we can ventilate a space, turn a heat pump on, even have the entry lights illuminated before we drive up the drive. Perhaps we can embrace technology further, and shift the focus to achieving a considered design

that sees technology solve the problem, rather than simply assist with it. This shift in focus is about building on the technology we currently have; shifting the focus from a passive response, to an active response. Rather than waiting for you to turn on the heating or opt for ventilation, your home would carry out these necessary steps as the need arises. We also need to consider our current response to problems. Our focus on negative environmental impacts and

our response is constrained by what we understand the problem to be today. For example, electricity; as the cost to use increases, we look for ways to reduce our use. However, with technology advancements around use and efficiencies to produce electricity ourselves, it may no longer be a concern. If we could produce all that we need through the intelligent fabric of our building, the cost of electricity would no longer be an issue. What Next? also asked; “could a robot do my job? Although the planning, geography of the site, location, occupant requirements and so forth are all data, and therefore can be processed and a formulaic response generated, what the robot can’t do is abandon logic and explore other thinking, the irrational. All while respecting the environment. The experience of a space, the quirks and the charm that make it a whole, will only exist with the use of an architect or designer. Whilst architecture may evolve and adapt to the changing technological environment, the need for an architect or designer to ensure a bespoke result remains constant. Le Corbusier once commented that the home is a machine in which we live, perhaps the future will see the home as the device in which we live? www.caarc.co.nz

AN ENDURING LANDSCAPE

Time is limited and precious so having an inviting garden area, without toiling to make or maintain it, is a true pleasure. This is Stewart Contracting Canterbury’s speciality – creating an enduring landscape for you to achieve that coveted indoor/outdoor lifestyle.

I

n one recent example, the “wow factor” was also on order when the Director of Milestone Homes, Nigel Smith, needed the new Showhome at 154 Kittyhawke Avenue, Wigram to be landscaped. “We wanted something quirky - a bit different,” he says. “Priorities were eyecatching street appeal and for it to be an

extension of the home’s footprint - a good, solid outdoor-living space with minimal upkeep. Grant and Sally Stewart have been very good to work with over the last six years and what they provided was spot on.” Grant (based in North Canterbury) firstly created a 3D design and an expert

White Room Interiors

horticulturalist from his specialist team selected the strategic plantings. A koru garden-art centre piece and artwork by horizontal timber privacy screens merge with grasses, natives, a contrasting red maple, rocks and river stones. Grant and his team hand-made the freestanding wooden bollards with bevelled detail for the frontage and backyard features, and edged the deck with comfortable seating. Clean lines of the house are softened by a pavingstoned path which meanders to a curved lawn that never needs mowing, but looks incredibly real. A home encompasses both building and its environment - and this example is a definite looker. “Everyone visiting the open homes so far has been very impressed.” Visit Stewart Contracting Canterbury Ltd at www.stewartcontracting.co.nz, or on Facebook.

es, we’re no longer limited to hieroglyphic etchings like the Ancient Egyptians and we’re not starved for interior design options for our dwellings like our early European settler counterparts. We are like kids in a global décor candy store. Notwithstanding that fact, many of us gravitate towards a down to earth aesthetic; romanced by a natural colour palette, sustainable pieces, and rough finishes which lend themselves to a strategically ‘undone’ vibe, akin to the unkempt bedding look that continues to reign supreme. Think terracotta, rustic reds and burnt oranges with a hint of metallic glam thrown into the mix. It’s a match made in décor heaven. Thrift stores and vintage marketplaces are a veritable treasure trove of raw, natural beauties waiting to be discovered. With a focus on carefully curated texture, material and colour, an earthy vibe suits modern day hunter-gatherers who don’t mind getting their hands dirty while foraging for organic objects of desire. Think reclaimed wood; driftwood from the beach; plants – succulents or cuttings, and other gifts from Mother Nature. With the right combination of elements, your home will channel a pared back but powerful look that will stand the test of time. Metropol July 06, 2017 61

INTERNATIONAL INSPIRATION COMES TO CHRISTCHURCH

The metamorphosis of interior design has blessed modern consumers with a plethora of choice characterised by innovation and inspiration. Today’s homeowner can have a bespoke abode that personifies their personal style.

ew businesses know and embrace this reality better than Live House Design Studio. AUTO PLUS AUTO NEWS ROAD TESTS NEW MODELS AUTO EVENTS

THE LEGEND LIVES ON By Ben Selby

It’s hard to believe the world’s oldest motorcycle manufacturer, Royal Enfield, is still alive and kicking after 115 years. Their Bullet 350 was to India, what a Harley Davidson is to America… legendary. Even today, riders continue to ride their bulletproof Bullets across mountain passes and scorching desserts.

N

ow, the all-new learner approved Royal Enfield Himalayan, is set to add a whole new generation to the Enfield faithful. It’s for riders who want an honest, purpose-built adventure bike to take on the Himalayas for real, hence the name. Grunt comes from a carburetted 411cc single cylinder four-stroke engine, mated to a five speed box. Power might only be 18kW, but a longer stroke means more torque at low rpm. A gear position indicator, fuel gauge, electric start and trip meter come as standard and the simple

white on black speedometer and rev counter are easy to read. Other standard equipment includes a centre stand and compass, giving hints at the Himalayan’s adventurous intentions. Riding position is very good thanks to a low seat height with good peg and handlebar placement. On the move, throttle response is brisk but not rapid by any means. It tends to run out of puff at 5,000rpm, but the extra torque low down more than makes up for it. Back off and you get a nice burble from the upswept exhaust too. The fly screen

works wonders on long journeys and the lack of vibration is a welcome change from Enfields of old. Leave the smooth asphalt and onto dirt back roads and the Himalayan is very capable. Thanks to a considerable 220 mm of ground clearance, 21 inch front wheel and monoshock rear suspension, muddy trails and gravel roads are devoured with considerable ease. Neutral handling gives you the confidence to push harder, and the 15 litre fuel tank ensures you won’t be starved of juice on long trips. Available in either white (snow) or black (granite), the Royal Enfield Himalayan is a great adventure all rounder for learners or seasoned pros. With prices starting at $6,990 plus ORC it’s astonishingly good value and the best all round Royal Enfield yet. Metropol July 06, 2017 67

HIGH CLASS PERFORMANCE IN COMPACT FORM Mercedes-Benz will build on the success of its compact SUV, the GLA, by introducing a powerful new design idiom and a range of interior and exterior upgrades and enhancements.

By Nicholas Henare

I

’ve been lucky to have interacted a lot with Mercedes and the GLA is fantastic. So how can they make it better? First launched in 2013, the GLA has been a model of success in a segment it has shaped and redefined. As the first compact SUV from Mercedes-Benz, the facelift lends the GLA a more powerful appearance and even greater character, led by an aggressively modified radiator grille and revised front and rear bumpers. Generous use of silver chrome for numerous controls and attractive new trim elements add a sense of high-class appeal.

GENEROUS USE OF SILVER CHROME FOR NUMEROUS CONTROLS AND ATTRACTIVE NEW TRIM ELEMENTS ADD A SENSE OF HIGH-CLASS APPEAL.

New standard equipment includes high-performance LED headlamps available across the range, while hands-free access – which for the first time includes keyless access to the boot via a swipe of the foot under the rear bumper – is standard on all models except the GLA 180. The GLA for the first time has a

360° camera, which allows occupants to view a bird’seye image of the vehicle on the media display during parking and manoeuvring. How this works fascinated my sons. To be honest, I had a hard time figuring it out too. “It looks cool, Dad”. Yes it does sons, yes it does.

O

ne business that knows about the local motorcycle scene better than almost anyone is Christchurch Motorcycles Limited. Owner and founder Lindsay Williamson lives and breathes the entire industry and sees himself leading an important charge – challenging what he believes are astronomical safety levies launched by ACC six years ago. Judging by the ongoing media coverage, it’s a sentiment that resonates with many enthusiasts in the industry. Lindsay is advocating for significant change and shares the views of other critics that the bureaucratic constraints hitting motorcyclists in the pocket are unjust. Impassioned rhetoric about this very subject is ubiquitous, offered by hobbyists and political figureheads alike, and Lindsay continues to passionately lend his voice to the opposition. A key criticism raised is how ineffectual the safety centric levy has actually been with arguments proffered that collected monies are in fact being squandered. Lindsay says he refuses to turn a blind eye to what he feels is blatant prejudice against his life-long hobby and area of expertise and he is restless in his determination to see an overhaul of the system. For more information about Christchurch’s oldest motorcycle specialist and its imports, sales and parts, contact Lindsay on 027 438 6935.

THE TEMPTRESS By Nicholas Henare

My first foray into BMW was an old 1970s 2500. It was built like a tank and just as costly on petrol and parts to run.

I

t was a behemoth of a vehicle in which you could lie sideways in the back seat almost fully stretched out. I got that because I couldn’t afford the dream of a 1970 CSi Coupe, which stood at the top of my list. A small list, actually; the MGBGT, the Triumph Spitfire, the BMW 8 series Coupe and the BMW CSi. The BMW CSi Coupe straight-6, described as ‘the Gentleman’s Coupe’ with fantastic handling, beautiful lines, and the power to boot, is a classic.

S

A friend of mine owned one and I wanted it… bad. Kind of ‘the girlfriend your mate goes out with so you know you can’t have her’ scenario. Then I get an email from BMW last month. What is the gorgeous silhouette they tease me with? It’s the CSi’s younger, much younger, sister - the BMW 2018, 8 Series Coupe. My tastes have grown over the years and my requirements on the tick sheet have too, so when the Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Harald Krüger, announced the arrival of a new concept car, I began to salivate just a little. The BMW Group presented a design study at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on 26 May, which provided an exclusive look ahead to the BMW 8 Series Coupe for 2018. They said: “The concept car embodies uncompromising dynamics and contemporary luxury – the essence of a modern BMW coupe.” Oh, you temptress. “The BMW 8 Series Coupe will build on our tradition of luxurious sports coupes and add a genuine dream car to our line-up – a slice of pure automotive fascination,” said Krüger, looking ahead to the new model. “The 8 Series Coupe will underpin our claim to leadership in the luxury segment. I can tell you today that this will be a true luxury sports coupe.” So now we wait for what hopes to be a new dream car with all the requirements that a modern driver requires. Will it have the desire of my youth when the veil is lifted? One can only wonder. But the anticipation is half the fun…isn’t it?

innovative vehicle design. “Technology is advancing faster than anyone can actually keep up, says Kevin Burt of Kevin Burt Limited. However, if anyone is staying on top of developments it is Kevin and his team of specialist

technicians, who service and repair all models of Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW. For over 40 years, Kevin and his wife, Maxine, have owned and operated their independent garage in the central city. From regular servicing to complex diagnostics and repairs, the team at Kevin Burt Ltd has a wealth of knowledge and experience. The business is also helping to train the next generation of mechanics. With winter here, now is a good time to get your Mercedes, Audi or BMW serviced and winterised. In cold, rainy weather, it is important to make sure lights are working properly, tyres and brakes are at optimal requirements, and even things such as wiper blades are up to the task in those heavy downpours. Call into 324 St. Asaph Street for a free battery check, whether you have a classic or late model Mercedes, Audi or BMW. Kevin Burt Ltd has all the correct oils and parts. Kevin and his team understand these cars. They own and drive them, and they have spent many years learning and honing the skills required to care for them.
