he extraordinarily talented Yale-educated actor Jodie Foster once admitted in an interview with 60 Minutes that she suffers ‘Imposter Syndrome’; that regardless of whether she was walking onto the college campus for the first time or accepting her Oscar, she felt everything she had achieved was a ‘fluke’ and she would eventually be ‘caught’. “I thought everybody would find out and they’d take the Oscar back. They’d come to my house, knocking on the door, ‘Excuse me, we meant to give that to someone else. That was going to Meryl Streep’.” Even Meryl Streep herself hasn’t been immune to the phenomenon. “You think, ‘Why would anyone want to see me again in a movie? And I don’t know how to act anyway, so why am I doing this?’” she said in a 2002 interview for USA Weekend. While ‘fake it until you make it’ is great in theory, the problem arises when you continue to feel like a fraudster. According to SocialABC AUDITED Psychologist Harvard Business School Amy Cuddy – “Don’t fake it until you make it. Suzy’s W What’s happening in
Suzy Cato first captured the hearts and minds of children more than two decades ago, which saw an entire generation of Kiwis lose their minds when she twirled her way back into the limelight for Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) last year. We catch up with Suzy about the experience and what she has on the cards for 2019. What’s happening in ‘Suzy’s World’ these days? 2018 was one of the best and busiest years I have had in a long time! DWTS was only one of many fabulously exciting projects last year, albeit an amazing one. I released two singles; the first ‘Sprinkle a Little Sunshine’ with the hugely talented Kath Bee, pre-Dancing with the Stars and the other, ‘We’re All Gonna Have Some Fun’ post the dance show; in conjunction with the compilation CD I curated for Sony Music NZ called the Totally Awesome Kiwi Kids Album. I created and performed at the first ever Kids Music in Parks event for Auckland Council’s Music in Parks series, and curated, created and MCd the NZ Children’s Music Awards at Spark Arena’s Tuning Fork. There were also numerous opportunities to appear and MC at events all over the country, which I loved (The Vodafone Music Awards, the NZ Television Awards, the TedX Youth – Avon River event and of course the fabulous Christchurch Santa Parade, just to name a few). And 2019 looks to be just as busy with another series of the much loved Kids Radio Show, Suzy & Friends to create and huge plans for my kids YouTube channel. Currently called TreehutTv, we’re looking to rebrand under the new channel name… SuzyCato!
By Melinda Collins
How often do you get requests to sing, ‘It’s our time, kia ora, talofa’ or ‘See ya see ya later’? All the time! We made over 2000 episodes of You & Me so I’ve sung both songs for the show at least 4000 times (once in the rehearsal and once in the record), but I’ve sung those songs at preschools, schools, live events for years and now that all those wee ones have grown up I’ve sung it at supermarkets, retail stores, my accountants, lawyers and… well everywhere! How did you find DWTS? I loved every moment of it! It was incredibly hard – physically and mentally – and not just on me but on my family. But, we all grew through it and we all loved the journey together. I had the best dance partner. Matt Tatton-Brown is divine. I will always treasure the time I spent with Matt and the rest of the DWTS team; both contestants and crew. It really was fantastic. And hard – did I say hard? Because boy it was! It hurt – feet, ribs, back, legs, head, everything. You had spent 15 years focused on your family. How did your children feel when DWTS happened and you were suddenly in the limelight again? My gorgeous two young people are wee stars in their own right. Both love performing and were the reason I got back out performing again. They’d found a folder with some press clips of You & Me / Suzy’s World days and asked why I wasn’t performing like that anymore. It was with their encouragement that I started my YouTube channel. DWTS was a really good opportunity to share with them the resilience and perseverance required and how to cope

with ‘failure’. Not for a moment did I feel like a failure, not making it through to the final, but it was good for them and for those supporting me to see that not winning was ok. Dancing for the Mental Health Foundation was a huge honour and one that I relished as I was able to share the journey and the struggle and show that no one is alone – we all have our down days and that’s ok. What is the most fulfilling aspect of your career and everything you get to do? Getting to be a part of someone’s day – either via the radio show, as I do now on a Saturday or Sunday morning; via the YouTube channel (where you can find eps of You & Me and Suzy’s World as well as all the new clips) or even via Facebook and Instagram – sharing a positive thought, a smile or a cyber hug is pretty damned special. That I’m able to juggle it around my beautiful family (nearly always successfully) is a joy. For me family comes first and that’s why I hadn’t dived back into broadcasting, beyond the radio show, until recently. Growing great kids needs to start at home. What does 2019 have in store for you? On top of my own projects, I’m producer of the muchloved kids programme and resource Bryan & Bobby and Snr Const. Bryan Ward QSM has great plans for him and his Police Dog, this year. I’m also Chair of Kiwi Kids Music (www.kiwikidsmusic.co.nz). I’ve got the Kids Music Awards to create for Spark Arena’s Tuning Fork. I have my album to finish recording and a tour to create and a book (or a few) to publish… Yup, 2019 promises to be an amazing one and I can’t wait to dance my way through it.

An Odd Couple H Ross Gumbley and Mark Hadlow last appeared on stage together in The Court Theatre’s 2010 production Gods of Carnage; now they are to be reunited as mismatched flatmates in the quirky Norwegian comedy play Elling.

adlow’s Elling is a neurotic budding poet, while Gumbley’s Kjell is a gentle giant who wants nothing more than to have sex. Director Lara Macgregor says that the appeal of Elling comes from seeing two human beings who are struggling with mental health issues trying to survive in a ‘normal living environment’ – and
how that challenge brings about a wonderful friendship. Elling marks Gumbley’s first on-stage performance in almost a decade. Gumbley, who is also The Court’s Artistic Director, says that he and Mark had been looking for a play that could reunite them and when he saw Elling in Australia in 2009, he knew he had found his play. “I thought ‘I’ve never seen a role absolutely begging for Mark Hadlow to play it’.” Hadlow, one of New Zealand’s most prominent actors, is delighted to be working with Ross again. “We go right back to Flatmates Wanted in the 1980s. It’s wonderful to work with someone you completely trust.” Gumbley says that Elling is lyrical, touching, funny and honest – but also raises questions around underfunding of mental health, which is particularly relevant to New Zealand audiences. Veteran performers Bruce Phillips, Gregory Cooper and Luanne Gordon round out the cast. Elling – The Court Theatre, 23 February to 16 March 2019. Bryan Adams is returning to New Zealand in March 2019 to play concerts in Auckland and Wellington before being joined by Dave Dobbyn and the Jordan Luck Band to perform in Nelson and Christchurch.

e catch up with the ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It for You’ hitmaker ahead of his trip down under.
How many times have you visited New Zealand and what is your impression of our country? I’ve been at least half a dozen times, all for gigs. My impression of NZ is much like everyone else in the world, this is where we need to go if there is a third world war. It’s safe, there is a strong environmental movement and you’re almost as nice as us Canadians. What can we expect from your new album, Shine A Light? It’s a collection of songs I wrote while not working on the Broadway musical “Pretty Woman: The Musical”. ‘Shine A Light’, the lead single, was co-written (on email) with my new friend Ed Sheeran, plus I have a duet with…. Jennifer Lopez! What is she like to work with after your duet ‘That’s How Strong Our Love Is’? Yes… Jennifer sounds amazing on the song; I think everyone will be surprised how well we sing together. I’m delighted we were able to fit it into our busy schedules. Your music spans over four decades with a host of feel-good hits. What is your favourite and why? I like all the songs everyone else likes. It’s easy to go on tour these days, everyone sings them for me. So honestly it would be hard to choose one song out of them all. ‘Summer of 69’ has turned into

this global hit at parties and in karaoke. It’s funny because when it was released it hardly did anything. I think that’s true of many of my songs, they’ve been sleepers. You’ve done a lot of humanitarian work and given back to many disadvantaged people through The Bryan Adams Foundation. Is there any particular project that you’ve supported that stands out for you? For sure. In 2013, I did a photography book and exhibition featuring wounded soldiers, “Wounded - The Legacy of War”. Out of all the artists and musicians you have worked with, who has had the biggest impact on your music career? Tina Turner helped me back in the mid-80s by taking me to Europe. We sang every night and ripped the place apart. Was truly the most fun. You turn 60 this year… how will you celebrate? I’m not sure yet, probably underneath a bed sheet somewhere, or out trying to learn how to surf (my life-long ambition). What does the future hold for Bryan Adams? Other than international surfer extraordinaire? I’m just loving my daughters and trying to master the art of growing tomatoes. You can add published winning photographer to the list of your multi-talents. What is your favourite subject/topic to photograph? People, I love interesting characters. I have a book coming this year called ‘Homeless’ on people living on the streets of London. See you soon NZ.

traditional Indian celebration of diversity that is globally recognised, it was especially pertinent in the lead-up to Waitangi Day, according to event co-organiser Hitesh Sharma of Revel Events. “The Indian practice of throwing powdered colours symbolises everyone becoming equal, no matter where they come from and whether they are friends or strangers, which couldn’t be more fitting in the lead up to our national day.” This year’s event treated festivalgoers to an explosion of music, dance, colours and food. Indian fusion performances and
other elements of New Zealand culture were included, alongside a variety of other cultural performances and music, with an array of food and craft stalls and family activities that include traditional Indian games. A spectacular aerial flower petal drop saw petals of different colours dispersed from a helicopter to signify the friendship and harmony between New Zealand and India and to highlight the event’s charitable focus this year, with proceeds of an optional gold coin koha at the event helping to support the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

CHIWAHWAH IS ONE OF THE NEW KIDS TO HIT THE CENTRAL CITY
VIET FUSION HAS ARRIVED Rave reviews are being left for You Hanoi Me that has just opened on Victoria Street, headed by the hospitality masterminds behind Louis Champagne and Oyster Bar, and its central neighbour Red Light District. The home of modern Viet cuisine, the new hospo hotspot brings the flavours of Vietnam to life, with the five out of five ratings soaring. A global phenomenon, Viet food is about fresh, healthy, authentic Vietnamese street food, direct from Vietnam to the streets of Christchurch and You Hanoi Me has added its own modern twist. The story behind the new restaurant is an inspiring one. It is said Nam Cam, a third cousin of the late Charlie Winston of the Dry Cleaning Empire, opened his first Street Food Stall in a small village 22 clicks out of Hanoi during the Vietnam War. Known famously for his Pho and Espresso Martinis and his ability to impersonate a young Sean Connery, he established himself as North Vietnam’s premier aluminium window specialist after his street stall went into receivership and the fact that he didn’t really sound like Sean Connery. Fifty six years later, You Hanoi Me opened in his honour.

t’s the first time the nonstop seven-day expeditionstyle race, the largest of its kind globally and widely regarded as the best – has been held in the region with the eighth chapter attracting a significant number of teams with high profile multisport backgrounds. Pre and post-race activities focused around the beautiful coastal township which will also play host to the event finish line. In true GODZone style, the location of the start line will remain secret until just before the race kicks off. The only hint given at this stage is that the start location will be a long way from Akaroa! With 70 teams across three racing categories including the full course 600km Pure event and shorter formatted 500km Pursuit and Prime events,
the field is expected to take anywhere between five and seven days to complete the journey. The teams will navigate their own way around the course using a variety of multisport disciplines including mountain biking, trekking, kayaking and pack rafting. “Competitors don’t know where or when they will receive the race maps but suffice to say there’s plenty of conjecture as to where it might go,” GODZone Race Director Adam Fairmaid says. “Canterbury is an incredibly diverse region with a lot of contrast from braided and meandering rivers to big, technical mountain ranges. It should be a spectacular race with some interesting twists and turns along the way.” www.godzoneadventure.com Metropol February 14, 2019 17

A family vibe Donna Monk is the Sales Consultant for Elmswood Retirement Village. Donna tells us why she loves the village and her role there. Donna, why is Elmswood special? It has a soul and a personality of its own. The buildings are wellestablished and the gardens are just stunning – there’s an area to explore or relax in around every corner and there is a genuine village feel as you come through the gates. The family vibe is created through being small enough for everyone to know each other. Residents can be as involved in the in-house social side as they like and maintain all of their outside interests. What types of living does Elmswood offer? We have a selection of living options: villas, serviced apartments and studios, the resthome and hospital-level care.
It is so important for people to be able to future-proof their choices and join us as an individual, or as a couple, at a level of care according to need. Even for villa-living we can organise for internal and external services to be wrapped around residents, so they can retain their independence for as long as possible. There are currently some vacancies in each option and we’d love for people to come and see for themselves. What do you really love about this village? I love the people. We have a laugh, the team and the residents, and I wouldn’t be here if we didn’t. We seem to have a really happy mix that makes my job a pleasure.

hen it comes to items that require big capital outlay, are only required for the short term or have maintenance costs associated with them, hiring offers a lot of competitive advantage. For example, when it comes to short terms construction projects, hiring tools and machinery is a great option for cost savings. Meanwhile companies are increasingly turning to hire companies for their computer and other technology needs. There’s little benefit in purchasing those which are going to be used for short term projects, particularly when they’re costly. Hiring is a great way to ensure that your business has the gear it needs, when it is needed. Not only do hire and rental shops open up the possibilities for getting the equipment you require at an affordable price, but they also cut back the time and effort required for maintenance. There are numerous hire and rental company options around the city, which will make your life hassle free and help you to get to your end goal.

Climbing the
Property ladder? It’s right up there as one of the most important moves you’ll make in your life. Little wonder that buying a home – whether it’s your first home or your fifth – can be highly stressful, especially when you’re not sure if you’re making the right moves to get the best deal.
B
ased right here in Christchurch, the Nathan Miglani team is passionate about helping Canterbury people take the right steps to achieve the outcomes they’re looking for while protecting their financial wellbeing – now and in the future. As experienced mortgage brokers (Nathan is the number-one mortgage adviser for Loan Market in the South Island), the company has the expertise to help customers from all walks of life. It has helped hundreds of young couples achieve the dream of purchasing their first home. From KiwiSaver and the HomeStart grant to lawyers, building inspections and insurance, buying a home for the first time can be overwhelming, so the Nathan Miglani team works right alongside home buyers to help them through the process, from working out a budget and saving for a deposit, right through to liaising with
the solicitors to ensure settlement goes smoothly. Getting onto the property ladder and buying a home can start to set you up financially for the future you’ve dreamed of – but once you’re on the ladder you’ve got so much more to protect. So, when it comes to selling and buying again, it’s even more important to get the right advice, especially if you have a young family to consider. When life gets more complicated, with children, a business, marriage or separation, you need a plan that doesn’t just work for you now but will fit your evolving needs for the years to come. Simply finding the lowest interest rate is not necessarily going to give you the best outcome. That’s why the team takes the time to get to know you; not just securing a mortgage, but working out a plan to meet your future financial goals.
And after they have helped you with your mortgage, they can help you with everything else: investment property, business, vehicle or debt consolidation. Like bankers in the good old days, Loan Market is there whenever you have a financial query – just pick up the phone and call. Every member of the team has a strong banking background so you can be assured you’re getting the right advice every time. Client Care Manager, Teresa, has been in the banking industry for 27 years. Together with Client Experience Assistant Rebecca, she will work closely with you to ensure you have the very best experience with no mistakes that could jeopardise your hardearned money. Think of this as the beginning of a lifelong partnership. When your daughter needs a loan to buy a car or you decide to start a new business, you’ll know exactly who to call!

The Limbo Performers at Bread and Circus
A Circus Act T By Jenafor Rollins
Acrobatic skills which took your breath away were the opening act of this year’s Bread and Circus festival. The talented and highly skilled Limbo performers were front and centre with the shock factor of this extreme entertainment, leaving crowds wondering how the human body could contort, stretch and bend into such positions.

heir heart-stopping illusions and mind-bending manoeuvres which incorporated spectacular dance moves and thrilling music is inspiring their Christchurch audiences to try their hand at the latest trend of athletic sport, based on training for the circus. The days of old, when the saying, ‘I’m running away to the circus’ was common place has made a comeback in full flair with the movie The Greatest Showman, which highlighted the history behind the circus and personal acceptance. Cirque de Sol is another highly publicised and popular acrobatic performance which has inspired
people of all ages to try their hand at training in circus sport and skills. Around town there are classes and workshops offered in aerial skills, balancing, juggling and much more through the Christchurch Circus Trust, enabling you to live out your childhood dreams. Training as a circus acrobat falls into a category of its own, which not only adds sport as the base, but also includes the drama of how to entertain a crowd in a fun, engaging and larger than life, showstopping kind of way. The vibrance and energy behind the circus offers a healthy and fun exercise choice.

All Ruffled Up By Tracey Edwardes
Ruffles will be hailed as a dramatic and definitive style of 2019. This lovely look has us all ruffled up.
F
rilly flounces recently swished onto the international catwalk and now this fashion statement which was first seen during the ‘40s and ’50s, with origins in the 16th century, is even more fabulous. Finely frilled through to oversized big and billowy, this exciting trend is blowing the straight edge right out the window for a while. Floaty ultra-feminine ruffles are adding drama to the edging of crossover dresses, through to bell-bottoms. Sleeves are even puffier than last year, adding balance to wavy fronts and hemlines of shirts, frocks and skirts. Surprisingly flattering, you can contrast by accentuating a fitted waist and hipline. All materials are in the mix. Linen gives casual, modern structure, with ruffles seen out and about even in leather. In lace they create a new vintage boho. Romantic ruffles make us feel like screen stars and divas of the red carpet are having a ball with this playful fashion theme, with waves of silks and satins replacing bling. They’re a glamourous frame to a sultry off-the-shoulder evening dress and create fairy-tale folds that float to the ground.

hirty-seven designers, who are in their final year of studying or have graduated in the last 12 months, will be showing their collections at the showstopping event. Entries in the iD International Emerging Designer Awards 2019 explore identity using diverse themes such as technology, war, sustainability and abandoned buildings through their cutting edge collections. A panel of all-star Kiwi fashion designers, Tanya Carlson, Benny Castles (WORLD), Margi Robertson (NOM*d) and Kate Sylvester, as well as VIVA editor Amanda Linnell selected the shortlist and will be judging the event. Each emerging designer will show five garments which will be assessed by the panel during a day of judging at The Regent Theatre on Thursday 14 March. iD International Emerging Designer Awards judge Tanya Carlson says it was interesting to note that whether finalists came from Auckland, Melbourne or Singapore there was a consistency with the themes their fashion explored. “This year many of the entries are inward looking, asking ‘who am I?’ Young designers are drawing upon their experience with family, ethnicity and what it is
like to be an immigrant to inform their clothes and at the same time question identity and how it defines their place in the world.” This year’s competition features three new awards. The Blunt Design Award, emerging finalists are invited to create a fabric design for a Blunt umbrella and the winning design will be produced as a limited edition Blunt umbrella. The ‘Free To Be Me’ Award, sponsored by Ali Maginness will recognise one designer who embraces and empowers young people to freely express themselves in how they dress, to move confidently beyond the pressure to conform and takes pride and joy in being true to themselves. The Holden Acadia Arrive in Style Award will be chosen following a finalists fashion shoot around Dunedin with finalists’ garments photographed with the new Holden Arcadia. The iD Dunedin 20th Anniversary Shows will cap off a week of fashion-inspired events throughout Dunedin. From Monday 11 March through to Sunday 17 March 2019, everyone in the city can indulge their love of fashion with events, lectures, parades, shopping and dining across the city. Customisable skin care: It is about assessing your skin’s requirements so that skincare products can be targeted to deal with each issue. Some like to layer various active products on while others prefer everything they need to be in the one bottle. Fortunately everything is possible!
2019’s
Biggest Beauty Trends
The start of a New Year isn’t just a good opportunity to reflect on how the previous year went but it’s also a great time to look ahead. What’s in store for 2019? Dr Brigid Lee from the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic has a few predictions on what will be big in 2019.
3.
Cryolipolysis: Freezing fat from any of those stubborn areas where fat accumulates and no amount of dieting or exercise will move – tummy, inner and outer thighs, back fat, arm puffs (referred to as armpit vagina by Jennifer Lawrence), backs of arms and chin. No surgery, walk in and walk out.
2.
Firm, healthy skin: Ageing causes skin to lose its elasticity. Now there is technology to help stimulate new collagen, whether it’s from needling – ideally with a machine that also administers heat down the needle and into the skin – or with a machine designed to deliver heat into the deep dermis, such as Ulthera, which uses high intensity ultrasound.
4.
Artfully done botox and dermal fillers to achieve naturally stunning results: Beautifully arched eyebrows and curved cheekbones with full natural lips are all achievable if that is what you want or fillers can be used simply to restore the volume loss caused by ageing.

Footprints Podiatry has just introduced the Lunula Laser, a new technology that helps to eliminate fungal infections.
L
unula Laser is the newest standard in treating recalcitrant fungal nail infections and has been used extensively worldwide with impressive results. Totally painfree, it uses two cold laser beams, which means no heat or pain and there are no known side effects. The two laser beams work in tandem to produce a long-lasting action that damages the fungus itself and helps the body break it down by producing antiseptic and
antimicrobial hydrogen peroxide. Lunula Laser also stimulates the immune system and causes vasodilation (the dilatation of blood vessels) by producing nitric oxide. This allows improved blood flow and encourages healing and regeneration. The Lunula Laser may also be able to help clients for other podiatry needs. It is currently being trialled with diabetic patients to improve blood flow in feet and toes, to aid in problems caused by diabetic arterial disease. The Lunula Laser has been used to aid in the healing and repair process of the nail and can also assist with psoriasis and nail damage caused by friction from footwear. In as little as four weekly 12-minute sessions, you can regain your barefoot freedom. Footprint Podiatry can also provide treatment of foot and ankle disorders (including skin and nail conditions), biomechanical causes of back, hip, knee, leg, ankle and foot pain, prescription of corrective foot orthotics, advice on appropriate strength or stretching requirements and training programmes. You’ll find them at three handy locations in Barrington, Ilam and Shirley. www.footprintspodiatry.co.nz

irstly, photos and a short video of the client talking and smiling are obtained, in order to see their current state when they’re smiling spontaneously. The DSD software then allows analysis of the smile, relative to facial features and movements as well as the colour, position and shape of teeth. “We can then virtually change the appearance of your teeth and design the perfect smile,” David says. “The possibilities as well as the limitations of possible treatment are clearly established ahead of any treatment decisions or procedures. All the guesswork is gone and even minor imperfections, which are
often missed with traditional diagnostic techniques, are factored in.” Cloud technology and scanning are also part of the process, allowing seamless communication between all team members and specialists. Beating stress to
According to Annabel Turley, pharmacist and owner of Unichem Cashel Holistic Pharmacy, stress impacts our mental and physical wellbeing in more ways than we could imagine.
“T
he problem is that people simply don’t realise they’re stressed. Post-quake conditions, for instance, are still a major contributor to stress in this city.” Annabel cites couples seeking to become pregnant as another extremely stressful situation. Having watched a family member going through the emotional trauma that can accompany fertility treatments, Annabel decided she wanted to become more proactive in this area. Soon she begins her studies for the National Fertility NZ Educator Course. “We have couples attending our Natural Health clinic who are being educated in making those necessary changes to their diet and lifestyle in order to improve their chances for pregnancy; it’s so important to seek infertility advice and treatment early
on – don’t waste those precious years, because it can make such a difference to the outcome.” Annabel says that aside from the usual medical reasons obstructing women getting pregnant, unrecognised and ongoing stress definitely doesn’t help either, and the sooner this is addressed, the better. “Unichem Cashel Pharmacy is unique in that we have a natural health clinic providing the best advice, education and natural treatments for destressing in this hectic 21st century. To complete my training as a fertility educator means so much to me. I love doing this – helping couples achieve their dream of a successful pregnancy.” For more information phone 03 595 1289, visit www. unichemcashelpharmacy.gettimely. com or find at www.facebook.com/ Christchurchpharmacy/.

Add flare to your wardrobe in fire-singed colours from burnished yellows to rusted tangerines. And on a brighter side, neon-coloured dresses are standing out like beautiful beacons. Blocks of vivid colour,
as seen by Christian Cowen, are in bold geometrically spaced blocking – the polar opposite from former fussy florals. Oscar de la Renta introduces black and white checks, on an off-the-shoulder dress. And just to balance out the colour wheel, pale powder blue has also made the high-fashion stakes. Tie-dyed has jived straight from hippy to high-brow as Prada showcased a pretty pink mini-dress sporting those unmistakable spider webs and

Jasper Coran created a tie-dye-over-floral technique and flared-sleeved crocheted frocks are futuristic versions of their former ’60s selves. This year’s neo boho is behaving more floaty, fluid and sensuous – and a real showcase of exotic travel adventures. Fringing has now gone to the frocks too. Sequin-smothered dresses are also still very much super stars of the frock fraternity. Pleating is still in, but it’s finer, slinkier pleats and the new metallic plaid is a juxtaposition of effects. Daring dress shapes are ballooning out in all proportions in tulip to bubble skirting, from a frilly tulle frock by Valentino, to mounds of tussled taffeta. Clashing patterns all the better. Puffed shoulders and sleeves are now even puffier – as puffy as you can possibly get – with feminine necklines to make this look work. Animal prints, which are roaring on the runways yet again, are less cheetah cub and more raging tiger – just to add more bite. Meanwhile, big oversized butterflies are the new bows, according to designers like Zang Toi. Feathers also feature on bright downy dresses. More neutral tones, there’s everything from creams to khakis – for those with a pared-back preference. All in all, this year the fashion frontier is certainly proving it does not have to run with repeats.
Buckle-Up

very fashion era has had a belt to match and they’re coming back as a leading accessory after a respite in the wardrobe. The wide belt was a big thing just after the turn of the millennium and now it’s time to buckle in again. Cinch in the waist over dresses, shirts, tops and suits, or create casual cool with a wide belt slung nonchalantly above the hips. Accentuate hourglass glamour, or create the illusion, with a corsetstyle belt. This look can
also structurally formalise an otherwise shapeless dress. Added to a draping summer coat, or floaty dress, it creates a feminine form. Belt bags are a big hit – wearing your pocket on your belt doubles its practicality. Designer-label logos are now loud and proud on buckles and the skinny belt adds delicate detailing to evening dresses. Metal chain belts, hanging loose around midriffs, have gone full circle from the swinging ’60s. And as animal prints have been unleashed this year - wrap something wild around your waist.

xercise is still the number one New Year’s resolution for most Kiwis and is in fact also the number one sport in New Zealand, with more than half a million participants, according to ExerciseNZ chief executive Richard Beddie. “We are seeing a greater diversity of individuals interested in exercise,” he says. ExerciseNZ’s recent consumer research report found awareness
of health is the number one reason people exercise, which is just under three quarters of all New Zealand exercisers. Fifty-one percent of respondents indicated they had carried out structured exercise in the past 30 days and just under half of these, around 743,600 adults, reported currently having a fitness membership. However, New Zealanders still need to grasp a far greater awareness of health in 2019, Beddie says. “This is quite consistent across all age bands, genders and income levels.” Gyms are increasingly catering for a much more diverse range of age groups, health conditions and cost, with a greater variety of products on offer today, from yoga to boot camp and highintensity classes to meditation sessions. Non-participation in structured exercised activities generally increased to a peak among 55 to 64 year olds. While 18 to 24 year olds are relatively active in structured exercise terms, participation dropped significantly from 25 years of age and to a minority after 45 years of age, Beddie says.

The migraine masters
I
Debilitating and striking without warning, migraine and severe headaches not only prevent you from living a full life, there also is a sense of not being in control of your life. For the 13 percent of the population that are regular sufferers, migraine and headaches mean time off school or work, missed opportunities and difficulty in planning ahead. The powerful medications used to alleviate pain can have side effects and can even cause rebound headaches, and have to be taken at the right time to be effective.
n the past ten years however, the understanding of what causes headaches and migraines has significantly advanced. The research now shows that sensitisation of the brain stem is what causes this pain. “It is not widely known yet, that headaches or migraines can be literally a pain in the neck,” says Laurie Moore, Director and Senior Physiotherapist at Muscle People Physiotherapy. Advanced physiotherapy techniques can alleviate or remove pain altogether and techniques to use at home can be taught so that patients can find relief between treatments. At Muscle People, Laurie, together with Senior Physiotherapists Clare, Naomi and Jaclyn, have trained in Australia in the ‘Watson Headache Approach’, a method of
examining the small movements of the top three spinal segments. An internationally recognised approach for diagnostic accuracy and for reducing pain for headache and migraine conditions, it can reduce the amount of medication taken, or remove the need for it altogether. The team returned to Australia recently, to attend a symposium on the technique. “It reaffirmed the effectiveness of what we do and we honed our skills even more,” Laurie says. The approach at Muscle People does not involve manipulating or cracking the neck. Instead the appropriate spinal segments are gently stressed in a smooth, sustained manner. Patients generally come to the clinic four or five times in the first few weeks of treatment and they are shown some very simple exercises to do at
home. After the first few weeks, treatment sessions are guided by how the patient is feeling. By the time they get to the clinic for the first time, patients can be at their wits end, but are really surprised at how quickly things can change for the better. Muscle People has three Christchurch locations: City, Bishopdale and Wigram Skies, and the team see people travelling from as far as Auckland and Invercargill to seek treatment. Muscle People Physiotherapy also offers the full range of physiotherapy services: acupuncture, massage therapy, physiotherapy, sports physio, functional training and corporate health and work injuries. For more information on the migraine and headache clinics, as well as the general physio services, visit www.musclepeople.co.nz or phone 03 360 3606. Metropol February 14, 2019 39

Getting to the
Guts of the matter!
New research is particularly important to Canterbury and better tools for diagnosis are urgently required. The Gut Foundation (previously the Bowel and Liver Trust), is aiming to provide support to Teagan Hoskin, a Post Doctoral Fellow at the University of Otago, Christchurch.
T
eagan has extensive experience working in the field of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) research, having previously coordinated a large study which recruited 500 patients. Her passion for improving health outcomes for people living with IBD stems from witnessing her younger brother’s struggle with this debilitating disease for more than 20 years. The Gut Foundation has a longstanding interest in supporting research in the field of IBD, previously funding projects assessing IBD incidence rates in Canterbury. A study funded by the trust in 2004 showed that Canterbury has one of the highest incidence rates of Crohn’s Disease (CD) worldwide. Strikingly, a more recently funded study in 2014 indicated that the number of patients diagnosed with CD had increased by 50 percent. This highlights the importance of continued research in this field and underpins our ongoing commitment to support this vital work. Currently, colonoscopy with biopsy is thought to be the best method for evaluating inflammation location, extent and severity. However, the invasiveness of
endoscopic examinations and unpleasant bowel preparation treatments is a strong drawback for this procedure, especially in children. Encouragingly, a growing body of evidence suggests that non-invasive markers measured in the urine and plasma may be specific in detecting gut inflammation in patients with IBD. The potential of non-invasive markers to identify patients with IBD, monitor their treatment outcomes and assess their risk of relapse is appealing. Gastroenterologists would be able to diagnose IBD much faster by eliminating colonoscopy wait times. In addition, they would be able to individualise treatment by prescribing more powerful drugs to patients at risk of relapse, while patients at reduced risk would avoid these more powerful drugs. The overall objective of this project is to determine whether levels of novel markers of inflammation measured in the blood and urine will correlate with disease severity in patients with IBD. Several studies have assessed the ability of fecal calprotectin to reflect disease severity in patients with IBD. However, this marker is not sensitive or specific enough to eliminate the need
for invasive endoscopic examinations. Consequently, the proposed research is vital to enabling identification of novel markers of inflammation that better reflect disease severity and limit the need for colonoscopy. The proposed research represents an exciting opportunity for an experienced researcher. Identification and validation of non-invasive markers that have the ability to reflect disease severity has the potential to aid in the diagnosis and assessment of IBD. If validated, non-invasive inflammatory markers could reduce the need for invasive investigations. This would be particularly beneficial for children, who often have to undergo several unpleasant procedures before obtaining an accurate IBD diagnosis. With a delay in diagnosis and appropriate treatment often resulting in poor physical and mental wellbeing and limiting educational progress, better tools for the ongoing assessment and diagnosis of gut inflammation would lead directly to improved outcomes for those with IBD. Oral Artistry By Rhonda Mitchell
The need for new or replacement dentures could bring a range of emotions to the surface, but you wouldn’t necessarily count on ‘joie de vivre’ being one of them. Unless, of course, your dentures are created by Richard Greenlees of Lovebite.
ichard is re-established in Christchurch from his Harley Street practice in London, where the well-heeled and those needing to be ready for their close-up, cut a track to his door. Renowned for creating dentures indistinguishable from natural teeth, Richard combines artistry and technical knowhow with a passion for deep understanding of his clients, their lives and personalities. Contrary to modern computerised and mechanised denture-manufacture, Richard’s dentures are handmade, bespoke, and individually characterised. Taking time to get to know a patient before creation begins, you’ll never see a conveyor belt of people in the waiting room, because consultations are a relaxed and enjoyable interchange that involves building dentures around who you are. “Dentures go on your life journey with you, so they should be intrinsic to you,” Richard says. This year Richard travels to conferences in London and Cologne to keep abreast of advances. “Dental technology moves along at a pace similar to technology for space exploration
and the materials used are markedly similar with zirconia, carbon and 3D printing coming into play.” Oil painting is a second outlet for Richard’s artistry and drive to represent, and fills any time left over from the oral works of art. Having shown in London and made art for most of his life, he particularly loves the works of Francis Bacon, for its emotional and sheer human scope. “That’s what I am always trying to bring to my work in all spheres – honesty but also great beauty.” This year Richard will carry on striving for reality in appearance for his patients, looking forward to meeting the new ones who each become important to him. “I’m always looking to create something special for my clients - a smile that truly reflects their individuality and character, and which makes them feel like themselves. This is critical if the teeth are to be accepted as a part of the person.” Find Richard at 404 Montreal Street, phone 021 555 293, and www.lovebite.com – he’ll discover who you are, but you’ll want to talk about him. s you enter the town, turn right at the entrance and drive along Racecourse Road. When you catch sight of the gardens, turn left and drive down an avenue of towering trees, where you’ll enter the horticultural wonderland that is Trott’s Garden. Ashburton’s secret garden started as one man’s dream to transform a barren four-hectare paddock, creating a space that people would visit and enjoy, inspiring others to create something special on their own land. Late last year when Alan Trott retired, his only request was that the property remained part of the Ashburton community. The Trott’s Gardens Charitable Trust was formed to purchase the property, rallying a team of volunteers and forming a management committee to maintain and develop the gardens. Since the first spade of soil was turned in 1984, the Trott family has planted a large area now known as the woodland garden, home to 650 rhododendrons. The display of colour from early September until autumn is stunning as rhododendron bloom among stately trees. Some 50 species of magnolia, 70 different kinds of maples and 40 different varieties of the dogwood family give some idea of the scale of this area, which is underplanted with hundreds of rhododendrons and azaleas.
Nearby is a bog garden with a stream that flows into a pond edged with many fine water plants, lilies and irises. The pond, from the near side, is free of plantings and so reflects a perfect image of the sky and garden beyond. One of the highlights of the gardens are the perennial borders running 110 meters in length, enclosed by tightly trimmed macrocarpa hedges. The borders contain only perennial plants, a rarity in the southern hemisphere and, unlike many perennial borders, these contain no natives or roses. A special area of the garden is the red border. Developed in 2005, it is a six metre deep, 60 metre long border, featuring hundreds of plants that are either red in foliage or flower. There are sweeping lawns and a lookout tower provides exceptional views of the bog, the water garden and the rare knot garden that fronts the garden’s chapel, where many weddings are held every year. The New Zealand Gardens Trust awarded Trott’s Garden six stars (its highest category) and designated it as a NZ Garden of International Significance, as it is considered to be outstanding for its horticultural value. Alan himself was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal in 2017 for his services to horticulture. Trott’s Garden is open Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday to Sunday by appointment only. www.trotts.co.nz

A Culinary Adventure
Where did you learn to cook? I was born and raised in Naples. During my childhood, my mum and grandmother were in the kitchen cooking delicious fresh food from our garden and making pasta was a daily occurrence. Learning to roll gnocchi is one of my first memories. My grandfather passed down the traditions of making wine and growing vegetables, which my brothers continue in our family owned pizzeria, located in Naples. In 2009 my New Zealand husband and I moved to Sumner, where I started my cooking school. I love teaching Italian cuisine classes which is how I met Melissa and Rosie from You Travel Ferrymead. You and Rosie are hosting a group to Amalfi in August, what can they expect? Our group will learn, through hands on cooking classes at my brother’s restaurant, how to make traditional Italian recipes including fresh pastas, ravioli, gnocchi and pasta sauces. Stuffed authentic zucchini flowers and of course pizza, pizza and more pizza, topped with mozzarella and served with a refreshing caprese salad. Learn the secrets of how to make the best tiramisu in town!
Italian culinary expert Tilde along with Rosie Petronelli from You Travel Ferrymead are hosting a 14 day ‘Taste of Italy Tour’ this August along the Amalfi Coast. Join them on this adventure! Meet Italian Chef Tilde

You will feel as if you are amongst family and friends as you experience Italian culture and cuisine at its finest, mingling with my own family in Naples and the Campania region which is shadowed by Mount Vesuvius. The Amalfi Coast, of incomparable beauty, has landscapes of ancient mythology and hilltop villages. Starting from Sorrento, the Capital of the Liqueur Limoncello, you will be seduced by the architecture of houses on the mountainside with bougainvillea plants growing on the walls, surrounded by orange and lemon trees. Learn the history of the volcanic eruption of Pompei, a magical city where you will walk the same paved streets that existed over 2000 years ago before the volcano erupted. 1.
Combine grated kumara, zucchini, onion, garlic and chives in a medium bowl. Season with salt and pepper.
2.
Heat oil in large non-stick fry pan over medium heat. Add heaped tbsp of kumara mixture to hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Press gently with spatula to flatten. Cook until crispy, browned and kumara is tender, about 4 to 5 minutes per side, adding more oil to the pan as needed.
KUMARA ZUCCHINI FRITTERS
For many of us, annual holidays jetsetting around the world are the time to let go and forget about the diet. For others it’s the time to focus on health and wellness. But according to Hayes & Jarvis, we can have our cake and eat it
T
he travel expert has released a study into the most well-rounded cuisines throughout the world, making it easy to find globalised cuisines that are as healthy as they are delicious. Although New Zealand ranked slightly lower than Australia overall in eleventh place, it proved to have the best dinner option, serving up kumara fritters. So we
hunted out our favourite recipe. An easy and popular meal option that can be made ahead of time and perfect for the lunchbox, vegetable fritters are a great way to pack some nutritional punch into your day. Crispy and golden brown, these kumara and zucchini fritters can be served as a side dish or appetiser and they’re easy to customise to use up any leftover vegetables.
Dill Yogurt Dip Meanwhile combine sour cream, yogurt, olive oil, dill and salt and pepper, stir to combine. Serve fritters with Dill Yogurt Dip and garnish with fresh dill.

Twentieth
birthday bonanza The Bog began its legendary history as the home of the Irish in February 1999 on Cashel Street, where the Guinness flowed and the craic was mighty.
T
he Bog is known worldwide for the best pint of Guinness in town, traditional Irish music, friendly staff and hearty food. Not long after its inception, the Guinness 100 Pint Club board was born and the 17.17 Club introduced. ‘Table 15’ was formed as a base where the locals would hang out, with many a story told and a few scoops of Guinness shared. John Julian aka ‘JJ’ or ‘The Sheriff’ as he was known, would make sure the pints of Guinness were up to scratch and the names were placed on the board straight. Not forgetting Peter O’Donnell who would keep staff on their toes and give a finger salute when he wanted another pint of the black stuff. On the topic of legendary locals, there’s no forgetting Chris O’Neill, who has been drinking at The Bog for just over 19 years. Those lucky enough to meet the OG resident know her as ‘Ma’, a fierce woman, seasoned Guinness drinker and great friend. Unfortunately, due to the devastating
February 2011 earthquake, The Bog had to shut its doors, reopening in March 2014 at 50 Victoria Street. The original Guinness boards were salvaged and still hang proudly in the corner of a small section of the bar, famously known as ‘The Old Bog’. The Bog will be celebrating an important milestone when it turns 20 years old on Sunday 24 February this year and it’s guaranteed to be a good one lads. With a week full of entertainment, taking us back to 1999 with original-priced pints and live music, including the original Irish Jam Session with the Jamesons and Black Velvet Band. During the week there will also be an Irish themed quiz night, performances from The Southern Cross Irish Dancers and bag pipers, spot prizes, Guinness and Jameson giveaways, and much more. So grab your family, friends and paddy caps and head down to The Bog Irish Bar from Tuesday 19 to Sunday 24 February for the big 20 year birthday celebrations.

Cathy and Aby, who saw a gap in the market, have successfully created a strong and loyal customer base with thousands of app downloads. Their commission is low in comparison with other delivery companies and they have successfully maintained an average delivery time of within 25-35 minutes. “We use special insulated bags which keeps the food piping hot, even in freezing temperatures.” Cathy says they have always received excellent feedback from customers, who are really happy with their prompt, personalised service. “We are always looking for new restaurants offering different cuisines, so that we can provide a wide variety to our customers.” Download the app and visit www.givemebread.co.nz.

Whether diving into the local café mid-afternoon, or languishing around in the latest culinary hotspot mid-evening, food and its consumption has long been considered a fairly selfish affair, driven not so much by subsistence, but rather an immutable desire to tip the scales in favour of enjoyment.

EAT MY LUNCH Simple, but effective, Eat my Lunch is actively filling empty tummies. Every lunch you order through the website, the organisation gives lunch to a Kiwi kid who would otherwise go without. It’s a little gesture that’s had a great impact on so many Kiwi children. With a good lunch in their tummies, they do better in so many ways, through focusing on learning to simply giving them something to smile about. One in four Kiwi kids (approx. 290,000) live in poverty and thousands go to school without lunch every day. Eat my Lunch is designed to help change this by making it easier for Kiwis to help Kiwis. www.eatmylunch.nz CULTIVATE CHRISTCHURCH Fiona Stewart (nee Hargreaves), a youth worker, and Bailey Peryman, an ecologist, came together via Vodafone NZ Foundation. Both were “World of Difference” grant recipients. They spotted a crossover in their work and after a onehour chat over coffee, the pair knew that their purposes were aligned and Cultivate Christchurch was born. Now they are supporting the Christchurch community by providing work experience and teaching skills to young people in need through a series of local urban farms. “A plant will always strive to be

27 SECONDS A collaboration between two North Canterbury wineries, a grape harvesting company and several other generous donors is producing wine with a difference and the couple behind the project-turned-wine-label are still reeling from its early success. Alanna and Pete Chapman initially started 27Seconds as a one-off fundraiser for Hagar – an international NGO that helps survivors of modernday slavery. “We wanted to help so we created delicious wine, where 100 percent of the profits go to survivors,” Alanna says. “We love the idea that something accessible, like wine, can be used for good. It empowers people to make a difference through just a single choice.” www.27seconds.co.nz CITY HARVEST FOOD RESCUE At City Harvest, they’re on a mission to get all quality surplus food in Canterbury to those who need it most. lemon squeezy Easy peasy
By Tracey Edwardes
Lovely lemon – it lets the sunshine in. Incorporate this fresh, light, happy hue into the home, as a colour and as in mood. It can be super smart and swish, or funky and kitsch – depending on how you play with it.
L
emon is a hard colour not to secretly love. A traditional nursery favourite, it certainly appeals to our psyche. It has a true transformational effect on a small dark room or wardrobe, brightening a dull south-facing space instantly. With lemon, you can go as loud, or as super subtle and soft as you like.
Fresh new house plans out now. Our already huge range of house plan designs is growing, meaning you have even more choice. Simply choose a plan and go with it, or use one as a starting point and customise it to suit. The choice is yours. Get inspired at orangehomes.co.nz

In the ’50s pale lemon was amongst the pretty pastel palette which painted the decade – as seen on Formica tables. In the 60s, a lemon-coloured kitchen was super cool – even before the orange and brown era. Incorporate retro lemon-glazed ceramics and vintage-style kitchenware with modern interiors.
All things fruity are very in vogue – so how about a row of pineapples on the walls and cushions? Lemons adorning tea-towels, mellow yellow kitchen appliances, yellow ducky bath towels all squeeze a little citrus into every room. Windowsills painted pale yellow accentuate the incoming sunlight, with perhaps sherbet-coloured floaty curtains. Lemon-painted furniture instead of the usual white is a pretty change. This clean, fresh take on yellow is a totally different palette story to its muted golden, mustard cousins. It’s the essence of summer and perfect for cool coastal themes. It blends beautifully with whites, when an all-white room needs a bit of zest. For more intense drama, pair with violet or dark navy.

T
he design team at Oderings Landscaping encourages clients to consider the following when planning a new or improved garden.
How will you use your garden? Is it space for your children to play, to throw a ball for your dog, or would you like to grow your own edibles yearround? Maybe the focus is on outdoor entertaining, or a secluded oasis to retreat to after a hard week at work? What is your vision? Do you have a design theme in mind? Do you like a formal or informal setting? Features to think about are plant textures and whether you like lots of flowers, coloured foliage, fruiting plants, low maintenance, evergreen or deciduous, natives or exotics, scented or edibles. If you don’t know where to start, take pictures of garden features you admire or search the internet/ Pinterest for inspiration.
6.
What are your must-haves? What would you like to incorporate into your design? This may include water features, raised garden beds or a deck with plenty of lighting for outdoor entertaining. Don’t forget to think about pathways, seating, BBQ areas and fences. Think outside the square Are there any issues you would like to address? These include but are not limited to privacy, soil condition, sun and wind issues, noise, drainage and allergies. How much time are you willing to invest in your garden? This is where you need to be honest. Are you content spending time over the weekend on maintenance? It’s possible to have a garden with wow factor that won’t take up all your spare time. Oderings helps make the correct plant choices to suit any lifestyle. Future Proof: Now is the time to consider the what-ifs. Consider laying conduits under driveways, paths or decks as they are installed, allowing for any irrigation, power or lighting you many want later. Will you need extra water sources in the future? Consider installing multiple tap points around the property. Feeling overwhelmed? This is where the professionals come in. The design team at Oderings has a Landscape Architect ready to help make this process as seamless and stress-free as possible, ensuring you get the best garden, every time. Let’s talk
ARCHITECTURE
Architects Cymon Allfrey and Craig South announce a new brand, along with an exciting new group to draw people together with a shared passion for architecture.
I
t is energising to have started the year with a fresh new brand, Allfrey + South Architects and to reflect on what that represents. The name change captures the strong partnership within our practice and gives a renewed sense of purpose for the New Year. While the name is different, we have the same team of creative people on board who love everything about architecture. We share a culture of collaboration and a desire to achieve extraordinary results. Wrapped up in our name too, is a sense of social responsibility that means we endeavour to create buildings that are completely in sync with their location and community. Above all, we recognise how privileged we are to be invited into our clients’ lives, to turn their dreams into architectural reality. In truth, we are all totally passionate about architecture and love talking about it whenever we can and to whoever
will listen. Wherever we go, we tend to explore and immerse ourselves in architecture and may easily get distracted by the curve of a wall or a choice of cladding. It’s an occupational hazard! We can’t help but bombard each other and our friends and family with architectural conversation, but last year we had one of those light bulb moments when we realised other people might also be genuinely interested in what we have to say. That moment arose from an open studio session where we met a lovely couple familiar with our work. They wanted to delve deeper into our design theories and hear about our current projects. Their level of curiosity really impressed us. It got us thinking that there must be other people in and around Christchurch who would love to discuss architecture and would like to get involved with a group that could make that happen.
The ArchiChat Group As a result, we are thrilled to announce our new initiative for 2019: The ArchiChat Group. Our aim is to provide an informal opportunity for people to meet us, get to know us and learn more about what inspires us and how we express our fascination with all things architectural. If you’re not currently on an architecture pathway, but have an interest, this could be the group for you. Every few months, we will hold an evening meeting at our office where people can join us for a drink and a casual chat. We would love to share our latest work and design reasoning. Rather than setting topics for each meeting, we see this as something that will evolve and grow. We don’t want this to be a onesided conversation. Rather, it’s an opportunity to ask questions and express opinions. What we cover will be shaped by what people want to know. The group could provide a platform to cover trends in the industry and the future of architecture. In a more general sense, we may talk about how art influences architecture or how architecture can be used to futureproof a home. If this is for you, then register your interest at info@allso.co.nz and we will keep you posted!

W
hether it’s a new build, earthquake repairs, or largescale alterations, the friendly, professional staff will be with you every step of the way. This helps with continuity, quality, and communication, says Managing Director, Andrew Clark. “We’re old-school carpenters as far as builders go. We do everything from putting up roofs to installing windows,” he says. “We don’t subcontract out; our staff are employees, so that helps us maintain delivery of product, makes sure the job’s on time, as well as being able to maintain quality throughout. We stay on jobs from go to whoa.” Project Managers are experienced at liaising with clients and the foreman and, because a lot of their work involves earthquake renovations and repairs, they will assist people with insurance wrangles, ensuring all work is compliance-based. Established in 2005 by Operational
Director Jim Stenberg, Jim the Builder has been recognised in numerous local and national awards for building excellence. As a registered Master Builder, the team passionately produces homes with the highest standards of design, craftsmanship and attention to detail. “We’ll tailor to any budget and we do a lot of higher-spec properties, which the guys love because it allows them to showcase their skills.” The company also completes hillside work, which Andrew describes as very challenging. Jim the Builder has a booming apprentice programme and ensures all staff are put through different levels of Site Safe courses and first-aid training. “Health and Safety is a big part of our business,” Andrew says. “We’ve invested a significant amount of time and money into health and safety, and we have an in-house health and safety manager who is responsible for maintaining all the paperwork and does
on-site inspections. “We also have regular barbecues where we bring in specialist speakers. For example, we brought in Wormald to make sure staff knew how to use a fire extinguisher; and others to teach them how to safely use tools.” All this makes for a tight-knit team of skilled builders and staff, dedicated to delivering homes of the highest standard. “We’re committed to quality delivery and communication is a big part of what we do,” Andrew says. “We’ll always put the client first in all decisions and our foremen have become very highly skilled, that’s for sure.” So, if you’re thinking of renovating, or undertaking an exciting new building project this year, jump onto Jim the Builder’s website to read case studies on its award-winning buildings and to find out how the team can help achieve your dream home. www.jimthebuilder.co.nz Metropol February 14, 2019 71

“W Building Dreams “ We had an extremely successful end of 2018 with enquiries, signings and new builds,” says Dwayne Prendergast who, together with Sue Prendergast and Paul and Bubs Jenkins are the owners of Jennian Homes, Canterbury.
e’ve built up a massive momentum and the whole team is buzzing for 2019.” Owners since mid-2016, they are supported by a team of in-house sales and accounts professionals, and they are thrilled to have a fantastic set of skilled personnel in the key project management group. “We’ve all got such energy and enthusiasm for what we achieve here, and it’s because we work with great brands, great trades and we get great results. “We’ve completed numerous homes for delighted clients, and we are proud of what we are doing,” Dwayne says. The team has expanded the area it covers and Jennian Homes Canterbury is now creating dream homes for happy clients from Kaikoura to Timaru. Three key words drive this team: honesty, quality and communication. “We are open and upfront with clients about pricing and products,” Dwayne says and client feedback reflects the value of that. Communication is continuous, from sales to completion and excellence in communication has enabled the team to complete builds for clients based in Australia and Hamilton, and for mobility-impaired clients, each of whom could not regularly be on site. Other testimonials include: “adaptable,
they were able to make adjustments as we moved through” and, “efficient with timeframes, all the way from sales to completion”. Jennian provides a range of designs unique to the company and covers everything from first homes, to batches, to architecturally designed homes, and of course they work to client-owned plans as well. “All of these sectors are going full speed ahead and that’s the way we love it,” Dwayne says. New plans were brought to the market in the middle of last year and these have been very well received, with three new show homes to be added this year. There is one to be built in Timaru, one in Rolleston, and the third at Ravenswood; a home featuring large open-plan living and a modern designer kitchen with integrated pantry, and clad in James Hardie products with a monopitch roofline. With a career spent as a builder, in building supplies and in building companies, Dwayne has “done pretty much everything in the industry”. His favourite part of the whole new-build process at Jennian is “completing dreams”. “We love to see the smiley faces, to help young people into their first homes, and to build the ‘forever home’ for families.” Metropol February 14, 2019 73

Vintage florals are adding life and colour to our spaces – and we can’t get enough of their blooming beauty.

ature doesn’t get it wrong. The colourconsulting design work has already been done, in a bunch of flowers. For a dash of yesteryear culture, perhaps include famous vintage floral patterns and materials, such as timeless Liberties or William Morris prints. Chic French Aubusson florals are elegant in a floor rug. Look for fabric detail too, such as floralart in reversible silk damask or wool-woven crewel embroidery. Hang old-style artwork of both structural and whimsical bouquets. Perhaps fill a plain wall with vintage prints, to create an art garden. The secret is to group these bunches of beauties. Tablecloths, placemats and dinner plates adorned with granny florals, sets the dinner table for feasting. If the lounge is overtaken
with an oversized couch and TV, soften with feminine florals. Re-cover an antique ottoman or chair in a new-but-old floral fabric, to bring it back to life whilst keeping it authentic. Vintage-floral cushions, in tapestry, linens or velvets characterise a plain lounge suite. Classic vintage floral is often muted – a sublime match with earthy naturals and stoneware. Or add brighter blooms if your décor palette is clean and crisp. Choose a particular floral species, or colour group that you just can’t get enough of. Say, pale-pink roses, or the deep purple hues of irises, violets, delphiniums and pansies. Then ‘plant’ renditions of them throughout – from tea-towels and teacups to the duvet and curtains. Or just deliciously clash and crowd, in an old-fashioned floral fest.

A HAPPY HYBRID By Ben Selby
Like a long awaited follow up to a band’s first big album, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is back. In 2014, I had the opportunity to be amongst the first in the country to drive the original Outlander PHEV and, for the time, the plug-in electric hybrid SUV had no equal. Now, with EVs and plug in hybrids becoming a common sight on our roads, can the Outlander PHEV still cut it? Mitsubishi NZ lent me a PHEV over the Christmas and New Year period to find out.

THE DIRECT DRIVE PLUG-IN ELECTRIC AND PETROL SET UP MAKES A WELCOME RETURN
Styling-wise, there is very little to distinguish the PHEV from its conventional petrol counterparts. Only the subtle blue PHEV emblem on the boot and front guards give the game away. The new Outlander is significantly better to look at than the previous generation. Inside, the switch gear is easy to operate. Instead of a conventional rev counter you have an eco gauge which displays when you are using or charging the battery. A-Pillars are a tad intrusive but visibility itself makes up for this no end. Plus, 463 litres of boot space is nothing to be sniffed it. On the move, the PHEV is still very car-like to drive. The shift paddles can be used to control the level of regenerative braking which in turn charges the batteries. Whether around suburbia or the motorway, the PHEV still provides you with sublime silent running, with average fuel consumption of 1.7-litres/100km. While it no longer has the market all to itself, the Outlander PHEV is still a fantastic plug-in package. Plus, the VRX is pretty darn close to its petrol sibling when you factor in price. All in all, Mitsubishi has pulled the rabbit out of the hat once again with the Outlander PHEV.

he new PHEV consists of two spec levels, the XLS at $60,990 and the range-topping VRX at a very special current price of $55,990. Both the XLS and VRX have a good selection of standard kit on hand. Features like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and a reversing camera are much appreciated. Inside you get push button start, keyless entry, dual zone climate control and rain sensing wipers. A clear and concise 7’’ touchscreen Infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay & Android Auto and Bluetooth Connectivity too. The VRX comes with leather heated electric seats, LED headlights, power tailgate, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot warning, lane change assist, multi around view monitor, rear cross traffic alert and ultra-mis-acceleration mitigation system. The direct drive plug-in electric and petrol set up makes a welcome return. Both XLS and VRX come with Mitsubishi’s 2.0-litre DOHC MIVEC Petrol engine and twin motor 4WD electric drive system. Power output is 88kW/189Nm. As the PHEV has no gear box, drive is sent to all four wheels via the electric motors. The petrol engine then becomes a generator if needed.

A TRIUMPHANT By Ben Selby
Finale
In a play, there is always so much anticipation for the third act. Act one, we get to know the story and the characters; act two, the plot thickens; and with act three there is usually a triumphant finale. Such is the case with the Volkswagen Touareg, which has just evolved into its third generation.

Interior quality is first rate and head and legroom, front and rear, is most capacious, as is the boot. The Touareg also weighs in at 1995kg and can still tow an impressive 3.5 tonnes. Moving off and above 2,000rpm, that 600Nm kicks in and you are pulled forward rather quicker than expected. Power delivery is effortless, smooth and lively for a big luxury SUV. Despite being in comfort mode, the ride can be still quite firm in places, so it’s probably best to leave it in normal. In sport mode, the Touareg squats down and proves itself to be more than capable of eating up bendy bitumen. Leaving the tarmac and selecting off-road mode, the Touareg is surprisingly capable. Fiddling with the off-road settings and you bound along with a great degree of pomp and circumstance. My test car came with the $6,000 option of air suspension, allowing you to lower or raise the car from the flick of a switch; handy for devouring gravel and muddy roads. The biggest surprise was just how fuel efficient the Touraeg is. At 6.9l/100km, for a big V6 bruiser, that’s epic. In summary, if you are in the market for a luxury SUV, you would be hard pressed to overlook the new Touareg.
motoring
I
n the past, the Touareg has been in the shadow of the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, despite Volkswagen owning both Audi and Porsche. With the new Touareg, Volkswagen has upped its game and it shows. I had the new model on test for a week and can safely say the new car is the best yet. Make no bones about it, the new Touareg is the flagship of Volkswagen’s fleet. Prices start at $92,990 for the entry point V6 and finish at $107,990 for the V6S. Both models come with a new 3.0-litre V6 TDi engine with 170kW/500Nm (V6) and 210kW/600Nm (V6S) respectively. A new eight-speed DSG box puts that grunt to all four wheels via a new torque-splitting centre differential, which can distribute 70 percent of drive to the front and 80 to the rear. Climb inside and straight away you’ll be captivated by the massive 15 touch screen on the centre console. The Discover Premium infotainment system is in charge of the car’s interior functions, leaving buttons to a minimum. While the usual tech of Nav, heated and air conditioned leather seats are always welcome, it’s the option of night vision which is really cool, allowing you to see on a screen potential hazards from hundreds of metres away.

N
ow let’s see how she performs. Off up the hill to get that first heartpounding acceleration, it offers superb cornering and plenty of power. After my last experience in the A200, the A250 takes it up a notch in both looks and drive experience. Increasing it by 45kW and 100Nm of torque may not sound like
much, but it’s a definite improvement on agility and feel. The A250 has a smaller feel but there’s plenty of room for four adults on a trip and it’s a good looker, with nice lines on the exterior. I liked the A200, but where it fell down for me was performance, which the A250
more than corrects, giving it the power to go with the looks. Not a bad price either for what you’re getting with fuel consumption of 6.6 Litres per 100km. All in all, it’s a great car and if you’re a family traveller or a person wanting a smart, great technology-filled vehicle at a great price, this is the one.
