Powerful Partnerships 20 years of providing a platform for success
Metropol is honoured to work with some hugely successful brands and businesses in Canterbury. As we celebrate our 20 year anniversary, we want to take the opportunity to thank our loyal clients for trusting in our abilities to provide a platform to reach their targeted audiences and grow their businesses.
“I’m delighted that our business Harcourts gold celebrates its tenure of twenty years at the same time as Metropol. I’ve written for the magazine for almost that entire time and I have a deep connection to it. Looking back, it’s like having an old friend in my corner through good times and challenging ones. The feedback I get tells me it’s always well read. It’s a pleasure to have been a small part of the magazine’s big success story.”

“We started advertising with Metropol over 10 years ago. I felt it fitted with our business model. It’s a nice, high-end publication; it has a really good reach, it fits the demographic of our business model and it relates well to Canterbury. In terms of quality, there’s nothing else that matches it. Metropol is something people pick up and read, and they keep it. Metropol has also kept up with the times and is read online and through social media. So it was something I was happy to invest in and continue to do so.”
“Congratulations on 20 years of producing outstanding local content. We have found the readers of Metropol to be an ideal fit for our demographic and have enjoyed and appreciated a wonderfully beneficial long-standing partnership based on delivering mutual benefits and friendships. I was introduced to Angela Bennett when I first took up my role at The George 13 years ago and have long admired what the team have achieved with the publication. I look forward to each new edition to catch up with the latest local news and events.”
“Just a quick note to say how thrilled I am with the latest editorial for our venue The Vineyard @ Rossendale and to wish you all a happy 20th Year. Your magazine is a great vehicle to promote our business and even after our 16-year association with Metropol, we still get an immediate response after each issue. The quality of your product and the helpfulness of your staff makes it a pleasure doing business with Metropol. Here’s to the next twenty years!”

EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

’m not sure when you last told someone how amazing they are or, for that matter, when you last heard it yourself. Truth be told, I don’t think we’re hearing it or saying it nearly enough. We live in a fast paced world, one which takes no prisoners. With the high-pressure of modern life, it can be easy to forget to tell someone how well they’re doing, or perhaps we presume the incredible people we’re surrounded by are well aware of how incredible they are. But it never hurts to remind someone. Chances are you can remember the last 10 times you were criticised, but do you remember the last 10 times you were praised? Humans were designed to focus on negative circumstances and consequences. It’s what helped our forebears survive. As such, we have a naturally greater sensitivity to negative than positive events. Some researchers theorise that, psychologically speaking, for every bad reaction, it takes five positive reactions to repair the damage. It’s given rise to a new parenting concept – the rubber band method. The idea has it that a parent wears five rubber bands on their wrist for the day. Every time you lose your cool or say something unkind to your child, you move a rubber band to the other wrist. To gain the band back, you must do five kind/positive things with your child – a dance party, singing a song, reading together, etc. Although your colleagues may look at you a little strangely if you attempt to break into song, perhaps we all need to wear some rubber bands – consciously or subconsciously – to remember how to treat those around us. Metropol has been showcasing the positive for 20 years now, so sit back and read about all the incredible people and places right here on our very own doorstep.

Peace of mind retirement Ryman Healthcare began with a vision to provide retirement living that was ‘good enough for mum.’ More than 30 years later that vision is a reality in 32 villages across New Zealand and Melbourne. the same. Everything we do must be “good enough for mum… or dad!” With seven villages in Canterbury, there is a village to suit everyone. Ryman villages offer a range of living and care options, from independent living in townhouses and apartments, assisted living in serviced apartments to resthome, hospital and dementia care. Residents and their families become part of the village family, where everyone knows their name and staff care for each resident like they would their own parents. Going above and beyond expectations is something we take pride in. Our villages include resortstyle facilities, the myRyman app that provides full details of each resident’s care at the touch of a button,
and our nine exclusive peace of mind guarantees. These guarantees include fixed weekly fees for life – guaranteed*, full continuum of care, and our deferred management fee is capped at 20%. They have been designed to protect residents’ interests and are considered some of the most resident-friendly terms in the sector. We call it the Ryman difference, because not all retirement villages are the same. Also on offer to residents is the Ryman Triple A exercise programme and regular activities, events and outings. All of these facets combined together mean it is no surprise when our residents tell us ‘‘it’s the best decision we’ve ever made, why didn’t we do it sooner?’’
Retirement living and care at its best! • Independent apartments and townhouses • Serviced apartments • Resthome, hospital and dementia care For more information about the Ryman difference visit our website www.rymanhealthcare.co.nz or phone Josie on 0800 000 290

The Ryman story began when company co-founder Kevin Hickman visited a resthome and didn’t like what he saw. There were shared bathrooms and little in the way of privacy or dignity for residents. He decided he would want something better for his mum. So, he teamed up with John Ryder to start a company with a very simple aim – the way Ryman Healthcare looked after people had to be “good enough for mum.’’ For more than 30 years Ryman’s villages have evolved to include resort-style amenities such as indoor swimming pools, bowling greens, cafés and hair and beauty salons. The way we care for people and the systems we use is constantly refined. But our core aim remains

ome of the country’s biggest fashion powerhouses are coming together to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) New Zealand and Ronald McDonald House South Island next month. The annual family-friendly M Factor Fashion Show on Thursday April 12 will treat guests to collections from a range which includes Anna Stretton, Augustine, Repertoire, Sergios, Trelise Cooper, Escape Clothing and children’s clothing labels such as IvyBlu and Little Urban Closet. After the success of last year’s Fashion Show at The Foundry, owner and event organiser for M Factor Events Maree Harris is looking forward to bringing more glitz, glamour and fashion to this year’s runway, which is back in the Transitional Cathedral, where it was held in 2016. “It is such a stunning space and works perfectly as a fashion show venue,” Maree says. It’s not just your average fashion show, with models including families who stay at a Ronald McDonald House, a charity close to Maree’s heart. “My twin nieces and family spent two months at Ronald Mc-

Donald House and it was such a calm, welcoming and family orientated escape for them away from the hospital,” she says. “It’s a really special charity to me, which is why I am so excited to use my passion to support such an incredible cause.” Ronald McDonald House South Island CEO Mandy Kennedy has been humbled by Maree’s dedication to supporting the charity year after year and says the show is an integral part of the charity’s annual fundraising. “Last year over 3,700 families from across the country stayed at a Ronald McDonald House and, because we receive no direct government funding, we rely on community support like this.” The event will be held at 7pm on Thursday 12 April at The Transitional Cathedral. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.co.nz and are priced at $75 for VIP, $55 for general admission and $20 for children and students. Funds raised from the event will go towards supporting thousands of families who walk through the doors of a Ronald McDonald House every year.

P
roduced by Craig Hutchison of CAS’n’OVA PRODUCTIONS, The Beverly Hillbillies is the second show to be directed by Rebecca Wakelin. In 2016 Rebecca directed Dad’s Army and had such a ball, she couldn’t wait to get back in the director’s chair. The Beverly Hillbillies calls for 22 characters, with 17 actors on stage. “I love big shows and I love big casts,” Rebecca says. “We are only in the second week of read-throughs, but already there’s a great sense of camaraderie
amongst cast and crew.” Along with crotchety Granny, peacemaker Jed, heart-throb Jethro and the lovely Ellie-May, the show sees the return of unscrupulous banker Milburn Drysdale and his ostentatious wife Margaret, and Drysdale’s secretary, the prim and proper Miss Hathaway. “We’d love for people to dress the part – flaunt their favourite Hillbilly look. We plan to have the Clampett’s car (a near spot-on replica) parked outside the theatre, so people can pose as ‘the
Clampetts’ and have a photo or two of a fantastic, fun-filled show.” That’s as genuine a heart-warming invitation as the Clampett’s ‘Ya’ll come back now – y’hear?’ The Beverly Hillbillies: 19 April – 28 April. Bookings information visit www.casnova.co.nz/theatre. Metropol has two double passes to The Beverly Hillbillies to giveaway. To enter, head to www.metropol.co.nz/win. Sweet taste

How did all this start? My baking career started when I finished high school. At the time I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do and dad offered me a position as his apprentice so I decided to go down the line of baking! What has been your most successful creation? The donut! When I started Glamour Cake I designed wedding cakes and birthday cakes and loved it, but as I carried on I decided it wasn’t what I wanted to be doing. So I started creating cheesecakes which started to take off and I decided to give donuts a go. This was the winner. It started off with the Mars Bar cheesecake donut and it went viral. Then the following started to grow; 12 daily donuts of a particular flavour turned into 80. Then I started getting really creative with flavours and designs and one daily flavour turned into eight and 80 turned into hundreds! My favourite donut is the ‘Leamington’. With the combination of cream and jam laced with chocolate and raspberry glaze smoothed in coconut. Yum. You became an overnight sensation, but your success hasn’t come out of nowhere. Tell us about your family’s baking background? It’s actually taken me four years to get Glamour Cake to where it is today; a lot of hard work, tears, patience and sacrifice. If it wasn’t for my dad I wouldn’t be where I am today! My dad has been baking for over 40 years, roping mum in when we were at school to help out. School holidays I’d be up at gosh knows what time, dressed, ready and waiting in the kitchen for dad, hoping he’d let me go in and help bake. As we all hit high school getting up early became normal as it became our job as hired help. So when it came to leaving school and thinking about what I wanted to be, baking was the last thing on my mind as it was almost second nature. Mum and dad have an amazing success story, going from a struggling family doing everything they could to keep two business going – the Clyde Bakery and Hillyer’s Café, only to sell it all and risk it on what dad could see as the next big thing – buying the Woolston Hot Bread Shop. People would queue down the street to get them as they were the only shop open over weekends, as there was no weekend trading. They both worked so hard; dad running the business while mum is running around making sure dad would still see us kids, bringing us into the shop just so dad could drop us off at sports
on a Saturday and watch our games. Mum would take over from dad and work so we could still have family moments. It’s amazing what dedication, hard work and support from others can help you achieve. Where do you draw your sweet inspiration from? To be honest I’m not 100 percent sure how I come up with some of my donut designs. I just have a particular way I like things to look and if I don’t like it I start again until I’m happy with the final outcome. Sometimes I have dreams of ideas and wake up in the morning and go into work and try and create it. It’s not a winner every time, let’s just say that much.

First we started changing how we’re working, now we’re changing where we’re working, as savvy businesses embrace the global trend of flexible working spaces.
N
ENABLING PEOPLE AND COMPANIES TO WORK WITH TOTAL FLEXIBILITY
ow Christchurch businesses are reaping the benefits of this clever working platform, with the recent opening of two sites by revolutionary office-space provider Regus. With a world-wide infrastructure of office space, enabling people and companies to work with total flexibility, Regus opened the Hazeldean Road site in Addington in December and now a second premium location in the Awly building, 293 Durham Street. Established by European entrepreneur Mark Dixon in 1989, Regus is providing a perfect counterbalance to new city buildings offering large floorplates, long leases, and commitment to extensive fitouts. Redefining office space as a service, flexibility is the central tenet. Leases are for one month or as
many as you require, there are no fitout costs, and spaces range from a shared communal space through to any number of spaces and layouts, New Zealand Manager Pierre Ferrandon says. “The cost benefit is fabulous because you only pay for the exact space you need: you can upsize or downsize with immediate effect as you take on or shed staff.” There is car parking, bike racks, kitchen and bathroom facilities, with 24-hour access available. The Awly site even features a beautiful courtyard space, on site café and food offerings. All Christchurch clients have automatic complimentary access to 3,000 business locations across the world, in more than 1,000 cities and 100 countries. The interactive website can be found at www.regus.co.nz.

Donna, why is Elmswood special? Our residents love our location. We are central, so families from a great range of suburbs find it easy to visit. Access is great for our residents too: close to shops and services and on a good bus route. Our mini-buses go out several times a week, on shopping trips, for lunches, or on scenic drives. Our village is a cosy, comfortable and safe base from where journeys as adventurous or as gentle as you like can begin!

What happens each day in the village for the residents to get involved with? We offer an ever-changing range of entertainment and activities every week – the concerts and garden tours are very popular. Everyone chooses their own level of involvement in the social life – you can be as busy or as private as you choose. At what age would people ideally think about moving to Elmswood Village? Our youngest residents are around 80; any time between then and 85 is a great time to come and see our village, even if it is a future plan. We offer gorgeous villas, assisted living in apartment studios, rest home care and hospital care. We have our own full time registered nurse and a weekly GP clinic. We are privately and locally owned with a family feel; we’re not too big and our staff love knowing every single resident by name.

Magical Music
March is a musical month at Lansdown, with its festival tradition of presenting opera as entertainment and enjoyment. Short-winded and mesmerising, this is ‘narropera’ – narrated opera presented in word and song for 85 minutes.
E
njoy Mozart’s magical Don Giovanni, on 11 and 17 March; revel in Weber’s wonderful romantic opera Der Freischütz (The Devil’s Marksman), on 25 and 31 March. Narropera’s success lies in beauty and brevity, clarity and passion. Its surroundings are altogether impressive: ‘Lansdown’ is one of the oldest and most cherished properties in Canterbury, situated between Halswell and Tai Tapu, just 11 kilometres from Cathedral Square. A fairytale atmosphere of exotic Victorian trees, majestic architecture and a performing room of great elegance and size awaits the visitor. Enter another world and enjoy listening to the beautiful German soprano voice of Dorothee Jansen, to the fine musicianship of the Narropera Trio and to the dramatic narratives of Haydn Rawstron. Leave Lansdown with a much deeper knowledge of these two operatic masterpieces. And, as a curtain-raiser to the narropera season of performances, the fifth Lansdown Summer festival presents a glorious evening of Schubert songs – The Fashion Journal Songs – also with narratives, this Saturday evening, 3 March. All performances are from 8pm to 9.30pm. Tickets from $42. You’ll find the venue at The Golden Room, Lansdown House, 132 Old Tai Tapu Road, parking in substantial grounds. Details (bookings, artists’ biographies, location map) at www.lansdownsummer.com or c/o The Box Office, Court Theatre 03-963 0870. If you’re a kid of the eighties and nineties, the sight of sequins and sparkles might bring on a serious case of déjà vu, but in fact, you’re on a date with reality because these style statements are making a colourful comeback right now.
W
hile they may have fallen out of favour with the style powerhouses for a number of years, courting criticism for their ostentatious, some might even say, garish personality, they’ve quickly re-established themselves as the ‘go to’ for the coming seasons. From earrings to sequin and sparkle encrusted ensembles, this ‘more is more’ aesthetic is having its moment in a loud and proud fashion. Tom Ford brought sexy back with his sparkling undergarments on the spring/summer runway, with Marc Jacobs also coming to this pretty party with his sequined garments. Christopher Kane, Fendi and Gucci are also no strangers to a bit of sequin and sparkle magic, and the trickle down effect is in full force with high street retailers embracing these embellishments. Not for the faint hearted, history tells us this concept also has a somewhat transient nature, but don’t be despondent; anything relegated to the back of the wardrobe when it finally has the wind knocked out of it will most certainly enjoy a revival when future runways start to shine once again so invest with confidence.

FORM& FUNCTION In life we’re taught it’s what’s on the inside that counts. And, while we wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment here at Metropol, we don’t discount the fact that sometimes we yearn for both form and function – especially when it comes to the beauty department.

striking statement Adored store Zebrano has brought striking and statement clothes in sizes fourteen plus to New Zealand women for twenty-six chic years. Always pushing boundaries in design for larger sizes, co-owner Jenny Smith is thrilled to welcome new label Rundholz Black to the store’s stunning and carefully curated range.
J
enny says Rundholz Black brings attitude to your look; it’s distinctive with a different vibe. Direct from Europe, the label has the coolest interpretation of winter necessities. There are drop-dead gorgeous knits balancing elegance and edge, and combining a soft handle with exaggerated shapes. A boundary-pushing approach is applied to dresses and jackets with perfectly pitched punk rock appeal, ready to add a rebellious streak to everything you choose to wear them with. Jenny and her team’s knowledge is extensive: designers seek their input on fabric types, styles, cuts, and detailing that work in larger sizes. Jenny has
encouraged many Australasian designers to extend their size range, making top designs available to all. The company takes a boutique approach to fashion: each of the six Zebrano stores stocks a slightly different collection, collated specifically to suit the local customer. “It’s a very personalised and customer-focused approach to style selection,” Jenny says. There are also limited quantities in each style, and sometimes only one piece in a particular size and colour combination. Whether you shop in-store, online, by email or phone, this expertise, care and attention will be yours.

DOWN TO EARTH DESIGNS On a planet where sustainability is crucial to the survival of all that we treasure, Steven Junil Park’s sartorial endeavours are weaving a fabric of hope. Metropol talks to the eclectic designer about his down-to-earth designs.
Was fashion always written into the stars for you? I was never really that interested in fashion, I just enjoyed making things with my hands. I used to buy clothes from the op-shop and alter them, which is how I learnt to sew. Even now I would hesitate to say that I’m a fashion designer; I just prefer to say that I make clothes. I think fashion requires the stamina to keep up with trends and the market but since I make everything myself, from start to finish, I work a lot slower and focus more on each individual piece. Tell us about the eclectic materials you work with I try to be resourceful about the materials I use: we live on a planet with limited resources. I find a lot of good materials at op-shops and sometimes friends will donate fabric that they nolonger want or need. Using second hand materials means that I have to respond to the restrictions and idiosyncrasies the materials present. The fabric I find informs what I make; I don’t draw up an idea for a garment then go buy the fabric. I’ve found a lot of satisfaction in making natural dyes from things that would otherwise go to waste: walnut husks, avocado pits, coffee grinds, elderberries, tea dregs etc. What have been some of the major highlights of your career so far The fact that I can make my work and be recognised for it is probably the biggest highlight ever. I’ve had a couple of times when people have started to tear up when they’ve put on something I’ve made – it’s really heartwarming to know that someone feels such a deep connection to something I’ve laboured over. I also worked for Comme Des Garcons for three seasons and got to go to the shows which were truly incredible.

rom the styling stations to the skirting boards, the salon furnishings were beautifully handcrafted by Traci’s husband Ollie, using recycled timber from earthquake-damaged buildings. The carefully selected organic product ranges and hair colours consist of Angel Du Provence, De Lorenzo and Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi collection. “We wanted to keep everything authentic to the image we are creating and really care what goes into the products we use.” Traci hired talented Kiwi artist Flox to paint the walls with stunning botanicals – an array of beautiful natural properties used in the hair products, such as lavender, ginger, aloe vera and mint. Originally from Brighton, England, Traci has been in the industry her entire life. She fell in love with New Zealand five years ago when travelling with her family and opened Earth Organic in December last year. Through word of mouth referrals, Traci’s clientele grew so quickly she now leads a team of three to keep up with demand – two experienced senior stylists, Caitlyn and Hannah, and a talented apprentice, Alice. “My staff are wonderful and we all have a strong commitment to keeping up with the latest trends and techniques.” Visit earthorganichairdressing.co.nz to book online, follow on Facebook and Instagram, or phone 03 365 7393 to make a booking.

Exfoliate those top, dull, leathery layers, in a gentle hydrating way.”
icky Blue of Bespoke Cosmetic visited America two years ago in search of a simple, easy to use but highly effective home beauty treatment that would fit into customers’ current skin regimes and add the extra results. There she met Dr Craig Austin, Associate Professor of Dermatology at Mt Sinai Medical School New York and his product range Cane + Austin. The hero ingredient is glycolic acid, derived from sugar cane – hence the brand’s name. “It incorporates the smallest molecules of AHAs to exfoliate those top, dull, leathery layers, but in a very gentle hydrating way,” Nicky says. “Just swipe the pad over the face and neck, even your chest and hands, to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, pigmentation and age spots.” Miracle Pads come in three strengths – 10 percent, 20 percent and 30 percent – plus two acne options (salicylic and glycolic) for extra pore clearing treatment. Other products include weightless SPF50 sunscreens and tints, facial moisturiser, eye cream, face and body scrub and body lotion. With her background in makeup, Nicky knows great skin is the most important foundation. “My clients love using it between skin needling appointments and as a general ongoing skin treatment that keeps up the healthy, radiant look they love.” Nicky is the distributor for New Zealand and Australia and the range is available at Ballantynes, appearance medicine clinics, salons and spas. The true beauty of these pieces is that it takes little persuasion for them to make their way from high-end to high street, integrating into the wardrobes of the masses with stylish ease. Shining through from the fashion weeks of New York, London, Milan and Paris, the checked print has put our early-adopter radar into overdrive. If you’ve checked out some of the recent fashion shows, you’ll see no garment has been left untouched, with the big names in fashion rocking out the checked trench coats, skirts and pants; Burberry took it one step further with a tartan stiletto x sock combo! Menopause Symptom Treatment
A new treatment for some of the less discussed symptoms of menopause is expected to change the lives of many South Island women.
W
hile menopause symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats and sleep disturbance are much talked about, up to half of post-menopausal women are also affected by Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM). This involves changes to the vagina and urinary system, which are caused by falling oestrogen levels. Symptoms can include burning, itching, urinary tract infections, dryness and pain during sex. Unlike hot flushes and night sweats, which may disappear over time, genito-urinary symptoms can remain and even get worse as a woman gets older. To help the many local women
experiencing these issues, Oxford Women’s Health has this year introduced the South Island’s first MonaLisa Touch laser treatment for GSM. Non-hormonal and non-surgical, MonaLisa Touch works by stimulating the body’s regenerative processes to create more hydrated and healthy cells in the vagina. It has a low risk of side effects and is suitable for women of all ages. Oxford Women’s Health Gynaecologist Dr Olivia Smart says the treatment has only been introduced following a thorough investigation of its effectiveness. “Improvements are well documented and more than 50,000 treatments have been
performed in Australia and other parts of New Zealand,” Dr Smart says. MonaLisa Touch is quick, pain-free and requires no downtime. It usually requires three sessions of five to ten minutes, providing relief from symptoms for up to 18 months. One maintenance treatment every 12-18 months is then required to retain the full benefits. The treatment can be used with or instead of hormonal therapy such as topical oestrogen creams and is suitable for women who have had cancer treatment. Women may experience GSM as early as their 40s and even earlier if they go through menopause as a result of chemotherapy or a hysterectomy. “It is fantastic to be able to provide a treatment that can significantly reduce these symptoms and improve women’s everyday lives,” Dr Smart says. To find out whether MonaLisa Touch may be right for you, ask to be referred to Oxford Women’s Health by your GP or simply call 03-379 0555 to book an appointment. Metropol March 01, 2018 31

Naturally fun
TimberNook has just celebrated its first anniversary of facilitating experiences for children in a range of natural settings around Christchurch.
he focus of TimberNook is nature-based play, weaving the therapeutic aspects of nature with an understanding of child development, creating play opportunities that challenge the mind, body, and the senses. With programmes for preschool and primary aged children, it is designed to empower rather than just entertain. Children are inspired to think and play in new and creative ways. Group and independent play can include themed programmes such as Knights and Dragons, with fort and castle building; Barefoot and Buckets, building rafts to test on the river; or Storybook, where stories are used as inspiration for play in the forest. “We always have interesting loose parts, building materials, digging equipment, pots and pans for a mud kitchen, string and wool. Tree climbing, rope play, carpentry, learning to whittle and more occurs in a safe environment with great supervision to master these more ‘risky activities’,” Kim says. The benefits of such naturebased play are many, such as improved gross and fine motor skills, increased auditory processing, better visual and social skills and emotional growth. With birthday parties, school holiday experiences and regular weekly sessions, Kim and her TimberNook team are kept busy. TimberNook can also host early child and school groups for excursions. Contact Kim on 027 934 0409 and look for TimberNook Christchurch NZ on Facebook for more information.

A SUPER
SPECIAL SUNDAY
When it comes to the hit events on the Canterbury social calendar, the North Canterbury Wine and Food Festival is right up there with the best.
S
et under the picturesque oaks of Glenmark Domain in Waipara Valley, the festival is back next weekend Sunday 11 March to celebrate the local bounty of the flourishing region on Christchurch’s very own back doorstep. This year headline chef, food writer, executive owner and chef of Homestead and Company Sam Mannering will be cooking up a storm. Proudly raised in Canterbury, Sam is returning to his favourite region to create a dish that has North Canterbury written all over it. What makes Sam’s homecoming even cooler? He’ll be donating 100 percent of the proceeds made from his stall on the day to festival charity partner, Māia Health Foundation. Festival attendees can also donate
to Māia Health Foundation to help fundraise for a bigger, better rooftop helipad at Christchurch Hospital to ensure faster emergency treatment – a cause close to the hearts of those in the region, with 100 rescue helicopters call outs from Canterbury between Feb 2016 and June 2017 alone. Alongside Sam, notable foodies and wineries attending include Black Estate, The Bone Line, Pegasus Bay, Greystone Wines, Cakes by Anna, Grizzly Baked Goods, Jonny Schwass, Kaikoura Cheese, Anteater, Bearlion foods, Utopia Ice, Sweet & Savage, while headline band The Eastern will be on hand to make your Sunday super special. Tickets: Adult $30, sober drivers $15, under 18s free. For more information visit www.ncwineandfood.co.nz.

he latest craze turning heads faster than a pirouette is the barre workout and this is one recreational activity which we can honestly say is on point. Taking its cues from sculpting ballet warmups, the barre workout has spread in popularity in much the same way as spinning, CrossFit and yoga. There’s no tiptoeing around the benefits of this recreational powerhouse:
1.
Be core-ful: You core is about so much more than getting a 6-pack, try a 29-pack! The core includes some 29 muscles and barre workouts can be used to engage them all!
2.
Super strength: By targeting the large muscle groups in the body, barre workouts can effectively burn more calories! By increasing your resting metabolic rate, your body will continue to burn calories even once you’ve finished your workout.
3.
No pressure: The controlled, bodyweight focused exercises of barre workouts increase muscle endurance and stability, which reduces pressure on joints, tendons, ligaments and the spine.
4.
Fabulously flexible: Of course, don’t forget that barre training is a great way to enhance your flexibility while significantly improving strength. Improved flexibility ensures joints are moving freely, which can improve your posture.

cuisine Flavour Month
OF THE
By Melinda Collins
Much like our wardrobes, the contents of our kitchen cupboards too are influenced by trends and, just like we freshen up our sartorial selections when it comes to the changing of the season, our culinary cravings can also benefit from a revamp.
S
o what’s the flavour of the month in our culinary creations? Well, topping the list of Whole Foods’ 2018 food trends list is edible flowers. While we’ve long been seduced by the culinary cool cred of this trend through the creative efforts of Christchurch’s own Cakes by Anna, whose dalliance with decorating of the floral kind has had our mouths watering for some time, edible flowers can also be used to add flavour to salads, soups, and beverages. The Beetroot Gnocchi with goat cheese, roasted golden beetroot, toasted almonds and baby spinach by local hotspot The Monday Room, which features on our cover this issue, is a very delicious example. Edible flowers such as lavender, hibiscus, or elderflower also make sweet additions to ice blocks or marshmallows. However, it’s important to note that not every edible flower is alike. While some can be eaten in their entirety, others need parts removed before they can be consumed – such as roses, which need their pistils and stamens removed – so do your research first, or utilise the delicious power of flavoured teabags, with the likes of hibiscus and lavender teabags now available on the market, giving you some floral flavour without the sugar.

Charcoal’s culinary cool cred It doesn’t look or sound like something you would want to ingest, however, activated charcoal is the latest culinary constituent on everyone’s lips and it’s the antithesis of the unicorn food craze of 2017.
T
his sooty, jet black powder has been a mainstay of Chinese medicine for thousands of years based on its detoxifying capabilities, yet discussions surrounding its health benefits have reached fever pitch recently amongst an increasingly health-conscious foodie scene. Now local cafés and bakeries are turning smoothies, burger buns and even coffee – known as ‘gothic coffee’ – black with foodgrade charcoal. Completely different to the charcoal for your grilled barbecue or charred wood from the fire, activated charcoal has been treated by high levels of heat so its surface expands and becomes incredibly porous on a
microscopic level. Hence its use in treating cases of drug overdoses and poisoning, where it traps toxins in the intestinal tract and reduces the amount of poison able to enter the body. The ‘activation’ process helps the charcoal bind with anything it comes in contact with, which explains its addition in many beauty products – and even toothpaste – lately, based on the idea that charcoal will bind to dirt and oils to clear your skin. Although we don’t purport to know the efficacy of such claims, what we can tell you is that charcoal activated cooking certainly earns some culinary cool cred, at least if Instagram has anything to do with it.

I soon learnt to decorate the table to five-star standards and of course was always trying to improve on her recipes. This is offered to individuals and companies for their employees who are not in the position to go to a face to face environment, but they can gain a qualification whilst at work. Our Learner System teaches people how to cook using videos, tutorials, interaction with me or one of the other chefs online via live demonstrations, chatting to their peers also in the industry, and being assessed in the workplace. It is easy to use and students can complete their courses as quickly as they would like to. The examinations are done online and C&G Certification is issued from London (UK). The World Association of Chefs (WACS) recognises this as a benchmark for chefs in the industry. How do you think cuisine in NZ stacks up against the rest of the world? Having worked and travelled across the world, New Zealand has by far one of the best ranges of culinary choices in terms of restaurants and many diverse, experienced chefs working in multi-cultural establishments. Christchurch can be very proud of its new range of restaurants.

The International Culinary Studio is a world first. A response to a substantial appetite for a blended learning experience, this compelling concept is serving up a generous portion of innovation. Metropol talks to Chef Andy Cordier about what’s cooking for the studio in 2018.

HISTORICALLY UNIQUE The Tai Tapu Hotel, or ‘The Tap’ as it is better known, has been at the forefront of social activity within Tai Tapu ever since inception way back in 1856. Strongly rooted in the history of Canterbury, The Tap has been the definitive place for eats, drinks and functions.

he Cranford Ale House ticks all those boxes and more. Frequented by locals who take full advantage of the spacious garden area on sun filled days, the friendly staff provides a great atmosphere for the many events. From Quiz night on Monday, two for one steak night Tuesday, Kids dine free on Wednesday, shout your mate on Thursday, ‘Fish, Chips and Pint for $20’ on Friday,
Weekend Roast on Saturday, and Sunday Live music from 3pm, there’s no day of the week that doesn’t have a reason to drop in. It’s great to see that this top spot supports local sports teams, and even better that kids can eat there for $12 a plate! Functions can hold up to 80 people comfortably, so if that farewell, birthday, or family doo is stressing you out, why not
let the team do all the work and provide great food, location – and even do the dishes! There’s plenty of parking too. The schnitzel has a lot of fans, but at 350g, the giant ribeye steak is sure to please too. With a menu full of favourites, there are plenty of great reasons to take another look at Cranford Ale House. It’s fresh and friendly, so we suggest you drop in soon. Metropol March 01, 2018 41

rank and his brother, Mike, recently reopened the Beach Café. They grew up in the eastern suburbs, attending Wainoni Primary and Shirley Boys’. The beachside community is in their veins. After successful careers up north and abroad, they have come home to give back to the community they love. Dog friendly, with water bowls and treats for pooches, and very family friendly with an enclosed, covered playground and a menu for the littlies, Beach Café brings great food and drinks to the seaside
environment Kiwis know so well. It’s a bright, airy space with a décor and feel that reflects the beach, which is a two-minute walk away. It’s the perfect place for breakfast before, or after, a stroll or a swim. “The waffles for kids have gone nuts,” Mike says. “Very popular.” The brunch menu has something to please everyone. The tapas, small plates, and platters are fantastic for sharing, and a good match with a Squealing Pig wine selection. Walking groups, mums and dads groups,
business meetings, and group functions – birthdays and even weddings – are all catered for. With a bar serving beers, wines, and bubbles, and flexible hours – 9 ‘til 4 every day, and late Fridays – “it’s a great place to have a great feed and a sneaky wine, and just relax,” Frank says. Coffees to go, cabinet food, varied menu, or just an ice cream on a lazy Sunday afternoon, Beach Café definitely has service with a smile. the place to go There’s more than one good reason to visit Café Vivo in Bishopdale shopping centre. It’s not just the amazing amount of parking that gives you great access to the el fresco dining area. 50 March 01, 2018 Metropol
t’s also not just because it’s on the way to the airport, just off Harewood Road, making it your meeting place for the catch-up with a friend for a good quality coffee with no stress on parking. It’s the great staff and exceptional barista-made coffee that got me. Despite a servery filled with delicious morsels of cakes and tasty treats, the hearty goodness of the main breakfast menu caught my eye. I mean who doesn’t love a good eggs benedict? Though you could choose eggs Florentine or Eggs Atlantic – that’s the salmon one – not a bad choice to have to make with such good food on offer. You might be lucky and arrive on waffle day or any day with a fantastic special to take advantage of. Happy hour doesn’t include the brunch menu but that won’t stop you from enjoying so much of what Café Vivo has to offer at a great price from 2pm-3pm on Sundays, with some of the café’s beautiful light meals. There is room for groups of up to 20 for that special function. Or if you’re in the area and wanting somewhere to relax and take a load off while enjoying a coffee, why not drop into Café Vivo for your oasis in a busy day. hether it’s a large-scale centrepiece like a cabinet or rug, or simply some dip your toes in the water statement accessories, conversation starters are all about creating unique focal points and bringing visual interest to your interior.
Travelling mementoes are a great option, as are unique one-off furniture items, but equally anything which catches the eye can make interior magic. While too many statement pieces can end up creating competition, a standout centrepiece is an attention seeker in all the right ways.

Currently they have several projects on the go involving the insulation of rental properties to ensure they meet the requirements of the latest legislation. “We have a number of repeat clients now and word of mouth recommendations about what we can do have spread. he company aims to incorporate an element of sustainability into every project. “We use recycled materials wherever we can, such as railway sleepers and old bricks, as well as sustainable, chemicalfree options like macrocarpa,” says director Jon Russell, who leads the small, talented team. Specialising in construction and design, Jon is dedicated to providing a space unique to the individual’s home and lifestyle, whether it’s creating from scratch, a renovation or general maintenance. He says the company’s success can be attributed to fresh ideas, friendly service and a genuine love of what it does. “It all comes down to quality work and a desire to keep our clients happy.” Offering both residential and commercial services, the team has completed a stunning portfolio of projects in Canterbury. One of its many stand-out creations is a small section in Edgeware, which was transformed using Halswell Quarry stones sourced from earthquakedamaged homes, macrocarpa garden beds and a range of fruit trees and vegetable plants amongst a selection of native foliage. ou’ll find artisan treasures of the world at Corcovado, chosen with regard to complete authenticity and integrity, and of course in accordance with Fair Trade principles. Owners Larissa and Andrew Hamilton say there is a Corcovado way, a philosophy that drives them. Almost all of the products in the store are unique in New Zealand and they come to you directly from the hands of the artisan that created them: Corcovado avoids middle men or wholesalers. That every product meets the principles of Fair Trade is non-negotiable: the items must be made by people who are treated well and paid a fair price. Products are then priced fairly for New Zealand customers, completing the cycle of both fairness and transparency. Larissa and Andrew travel regularly to explore the out of the way places of the world where they meet and are inspired by the craftspeople and artists creating exceptional products. In partnering with them, Larissa and Andrew are instrumental in the growing movement away from mass market, machine made, disposable possessions. “We understand that our customer is a conscious consumer, the type of person who would rather buy once, buy beautiful, have it last, and love it forever,” Larissa says. Summer was spent travelling in Mozambique where they were inspired by the natural beauty, the use of sustainable, natural materials and the way artisans put them together, plus the surprising, utter lack of non-biodegradable waste. There is an inherent reduce, reuse, recycle, plus repair approach in Mozambique Larissa says. The environmental consciousness is amazing. “Our trip reconfirmed our commitment to the use of natural, real materials, and for us to continue to discover genuine craftspeople, and bring their products directly to New Zealand.” They had established a few connections before they left but the idea was to be open to anything that inspired them on the journey. Larissa says they were moved by the sights and sounds of the country well beyond their expectations. One special supplier they have aligned with is a Fair Trade accredited blind artisan, who weaves mats and rugs made from the leaves of a local palm species. The intricate patterns are recreated from his memory, and each rug takes months to create. Larissa says it is a privilege to connect with that level of skill and dedication. The new range from Africa will start to arrive in the middle of the year, and Larissa says the global product range will continue to increase, with further intrepid expeditions planned. e have been hearing a great deal about the amount of plastic that is finding its way into our planet’s oceans and about how we should reduce our use of the material. Total Food Equipment is definitely fighting the good fight on this environmental issue. The store stocks multicoloured stainless eco-friendly water bottles for hydration, along with stainless straws and reusable eco coffee cups. Look on another shelf and you will find bio-degradable storage bags, paper snack and sandwich bags and reusable paper towels. One roll of these replaces 18 rolls of conventional paper towels! No cling wrap or plastic bags in sight here. Tfe also has compact under-bench composting bins for saving food scraps and eliminating wastage. But tfe is forward thinking in other ways as well, constantly searching suppliers and manufacturers for new and more efficient equipment to help cooks create their culinary masterpieces. Recently arrived in store is the MasterPro Sous Vide Precision Cooker. ‘Sous vide’ is French for ‘under vacuum’ and the method uses sealed pouches to cook vegetables, fish, poultry, red meat and more in a water bath, achieving succulent, nutritious and flavorsome results. The tech-

nique has been used by chefs for decades to lock in natural juices creating food that is evenly cooked from edge to edge. With the MasterPro Sous Vide Cooker we can all achieve chef level perfection. Another new arrival at tfe is the MasterPro 12 in 1 stainless steel multi-cooker pressure cooker. This clever machine can take over all your cooking tasks and certainly help you to declutter your cupboards of pots and pans. The multi- cooker features six cooking functions (slow cook, sous vide, sauté, steam, yoghurt, pasta) and six pressure (rice, meat/poultry, bean/ chilli, soup/porridge, canning, potato) . There is also a ‘keep warm’ setting and a countdown timer so food is ready when you need it and an easy lock function keeps your pressure cooking safe. The MasterPro Multi Cooker makes creating a wide range of hearty meals easier than ever. Total Food Equipment is situated at 218 Moorhouse Avenue in the Mid-Way Moorhouse complex. The store is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday to Sunday 10am to 4pm and there is easy access with plenty of parking. Don’t forget the store’s wedding register programme while the wedding season is still with us.

his season, sophisticated earthy shades partnered with light neutrals will dominate, alongside tribal-inspired textured furnishings – perfect for creating the nurturing space we crave for when the temperatures start their downward descent. A collection of rich hues inspired by traditional cultures and folklore, the Dulux Kinship Palette is one of four key themes identified in the Dulux 2018 Colour Trends. Featuring warm terracotta, russet, soft grey-greens, cosy neutrals and pops of vibrant red that hint at an Eastern influence, the range pairs beautifully with the natural materials that are so popular right now – warm timbers, stone and linens. Whether you choose to go allout with these deeper shades or dip your toe in the water with a few touches, the key is to pair them with a complementary white or neutral boasting similar undertones, creating balance and allowing the bold hues to enhance rather than overwhelm a space. A warm white, Dulux’s Cardrona sits beautifully alongside the pinkish and heathery hues of Maiko and Glen Murray, while its cooler sibling Hakataramea ensures deeper shades such as Very Terracotta, pop. So why not colour yourself cosy this autumn.

OF
Robbert Van den Broeke always had a passion for beautiful antiques. Over the years he collected an extensive array of European treasures and opened his antique-lovers’ paradise ‘Halkett Barn’ in 2016. Situated in West Melton, just 15 minutes west of Christchurch, it is a ‘destination’ antique store.
R
obbert specialises in exquisite European antiques that he personally selects and ships to New Zealand. If clients have a piece in mind they cannot find themselves, there is a very good chance he can source it from Europe. He also restores furniture in his onsite workshop – some need a good wax and others, a complete fix and rebuild. “I love a finished piece that embraces its past while still looking stunning for today’s use and enjoyment. There is a warmth, character and history in
well-designed furniture and artefacts that have lasted centuries past their construction,” he says. Antique lovers must visit Halkett Barn, they will meet a kindred spirit in Robbert. He has clients throughout the country (and even tourists who have asked him to ship irresistible items back to their home countries). Follow Halkett Barn on Facebook (and get yourself added to the mailing list) to see the arrival of new shipments first. Visit Thursday to Sunday 10am-4pm at 499 Halkett Road.

Antiques are more than just large pieces of stately furniture:

Antiques are an exciting, niche passion:
3.
The misconception about antiques:
4.
Contemporary and antique go together perfectly:
5.
There are lamps, silverware, art, linen and porcelain. “Some clients (collectors) who bought porcelain from me are always looking for more, so I always keep my eye out for them.”
“Some clients are very knowledgeable and passionate about their collection, and we have some robust conversations about various pieces and their history.” Robbert has a degree in mining engineering but always loved restoring and updating character homes and furniture. After purchasing more antiques for himself than his home could handle, Halkett Barn was born. “I should have done it earlier,” he says. .
“My sons used to think antiques were ‘boring and old’ but they have helped unload shipments and studied the craftsmanship in the pieces and have already claimed those they hope to acquire in time.”
If your personal interior style is contemporary, that does not mean you cannot adore antique items too. They complement each other – one creates a feature (or perfect backdrop for) the other. “I like both antique and modern furniture. An antique piece in a modern house gives contrast and warmth.”
The beauty captivates people: The workmanship and detail impresses even the young ones. Robbert’s advice to someone who has never brought antiques before? “Just start, buy only what you love, mix it up and have fun.”

For people who want to stay in their local areas (if they have children at local schools or enjoy the facilities around them) we offer a full remove and rebuild service; a step-by step process that allows you to live in the suburb of your choice, in the house of your choice,” Coralie explains. Landmark Homes can take clients through the full design and build process, and work with a team of consultants which specialises in elevated sites. You can visit the new Landmark Homes ‘Leigh Design’ show home in Burwood, located at 31 Prestons Park Drive, Wednesday to Sunday 12pm to 4pm. relative newcomer on the Christchurch curtain and blind manufacturing scene, though well-known in Auckland since 2001, is Officine Voluptas, where modern design meets cosy comfort. Over the years, the company has built a solid reputation for high-quality curtains, very competitive pricing and excellent service. Now Christchurch customers can experience that winning combination. Located in a character house in Riccarton that is ideal for displaying full drops of curtain fabric, Officine Voluptas’ showroom is like an Aladdin’s cave of colour, design and texture. There is everything from sensual velvet and shimmering silk, to the warmth and practicality of wool, as well as easy care cotton and polyester. The designs are as varied as one’s imagination. A little girl would adore curtains in her bedroom with characters from Frozen, while sheers with a subtly elegant leaf or magnolia design could grace any lounge window while protecting precious furniture from UV glare. There are so many window dressing possibilities – not only drapes, but also the patterns and textiles of roller, vertical or Roman blinds. Officine Voluptas can manufacture them all. “We offer a full package for customers in Christchurch and out to areas such as Rolleston and Lincoln – free measure and quote and free
installation,” says Kris Yang, who set up the Christchurch branch. “We want the whole process to be easy and enjoyable. Choosing window dressings should be a really delightful, pleasurable experience – that’s the meaning of the ‘Voluptas’ part of our name, while ‘Officine’ is Italian for workshop – and we certainly make every effort to help and advise customers on the right fabric for the rooms they want to dress, as well as on the type of track, rod or tie-back that will set the drapes off to perfection.” Once measurements are taken and the fabrics chosen, the window dressings are manufactured in the company’s Auckland factory. “It normally takes only two weeks for the curtains or blinds to be produced. As soon as they are ready, we will contact the customer to arrange a convenient time to install. We are very pleased to offer a two year warranty on both our fabrics and our installation. We would love to see Christchurch people at our showroom as we have some very good price offers for our new branch.” Officine Voluptas is located at 25 Picton Avenue, Riccarton. concept that goes hand-in-hand with many pros – helping to divide a space, adding flair, giving the illusion of depth when there isn’t much – it’s hard to imagine that the feature wall could ever disappoint. Namely, looking out of place in an otherwise cohesive space if the wrong colour or pattern is chosen, adding chaos to an already overcrowded space, and dating a space when the chosen colour or concept loses its street cred. I
t has been wonderful to see such a celebration of architecture in the media recently, in particular that of small or compact homes: homes that are providing innovative solutions to living within a condensed floor plan. While these houses are providing a more efficient way of living, they are not necessarily providing a more affordable solution to building. Small doesn’t necessarily mean low cost, yet more often than not we are seeing the lines blurred between the correlation of small and affordable, and vice versa. While it is possible to establish a connection between affordability and size, what is often missed in this instance is an emphasis on design quality, which ultimately impacts the livability of the home. The size of your new home is only one consideration when it comes to achieving a high quality, affordable design. While there is no specific definition of a compact home, it pays to note that we are talking about small, not tiny houses, which are typically semipermanent structures of 50sqm or less. Like all forms of architecture, compact homes see the architect apply a design solution to a number of different needs, wants and requirements: a unique typology for that homeowner, site and location. And, as with all successful architecture, a compact floor plan should be a direct response to the needs of that particular typology: one size doesn’t fit all and that is ok. The question you need to ask yourself when planning your new home is whether small is right for you, your needs and your site. Context, in particular, is a key consideration as compact housing demands a high degree of local amenity; a way of living that is simply not suitable, or desirable, for all. A compact house on a large rural site, for instance, would fail to function as successfully as that of a suburban setting. As architects and designers, it is our responsibility to be efficient in our design, no matter what the size of the home. A poorly designed small home is still a poorly designed home; the fact that it is small doesn’t mean it is instantly an example of ‘good’ design. It is important to remember that it is not for

New Zealand’s Most Efficient Ultra-Low Emission Wood Burner Environment Canterbury’s strict clean air standards were a major driver for Nelson-based company Retail Links designing and engineering its latest wood fire – the Jayline UL200.
“T
he Jayline UL200 is the most efficient ultra-low emission wood burner on the New Zealand market. Not only are its emissions extremely low, it also has excellent fuel economy, so you’ll use less wood to heat your
Downdraft Technology – the secret to efficiency
home,” explains CEO Johnnie Cameron. “This was incredibly challenging to achieve, but we felt passionate that New Zealanders deserved an environmentally friendly, beautiful, affordable fireplace.”
Making beautiful fires
Ultra-stylish, ultra-simple, ultra-cosy, ultra-affordable
Dave Thompson, Greg Walsh, Johnnie Cameron, Ross Sneddon
It took shared vision and two years of work for Johnnie and the Jayline team – engineer Ross Sneddon, designer Dave Thompson and National Sales Manager Greg Walsh – before they felt the UL200 was right to take to market. The secret to the fire’s efficiency is its dual chamber firebox. The top chamber is loaded with wood and lit like a traditional fire, with the fire only burning in the main chamber at first. Once the fire reaches a critical temperature, the opening which connects the top chamber to the flue automatically shuts, resulting in hot gases being drawn down into the bottom firebox where they combust in a unique ‘downwards flame’. “It’s quite mesmerising to watch,” Ross says, adding that the technology is fully automated (unlike some ULEBs on the market), making it incredibly user friendly.
The Jayline team believes that the healthy tension between Dave and Ross was a key factor in creating the cutting-edge UL200. Ross points out it’s one thing to conceptualise a beautiful-looking ULEB on a computer and quite another to make it the most efficient. However, Dave and Ross are passionate about changing the paradigm of wood fires sacrificing aesthetics for functionality. “If you work hard enough, you can have both,” Dave says. Johnnie adds, “We really wanted to push the boundaries of what’s possible. And when it came to the tension between design and performance, we made sure each stakeholder’s wants and needs were considered. Our mission is to ensure every Jayline fireplace is beautiful in design, highly efficient and low in emissions.”
National Sales Manager Greg is excited by the rate of R&D progression currently in motion at Jayline, explaining that a shift in thinking is driving its product evolution. “We no longer think about a wood fire as a means to an end to warm a home; we think about it as an appliance that, whether in use or not, must add to the character of the home – the same way a piece of furniture would.” At $3999 including flue kit, Greg hopes that the new UL200 will allow Cantabrians to continue their long-held affinity with wood heating in their homes. Jayline’s UL200 is available to view and pre-order NOW at 4 Seasons, TOWER Junction Mega Centre, 6 Lower Blenheim Rd, Addington, Christchurch 03 341 1220. It is also available to pre-order from Jayline specialist dealers, with stock arriving April

motoring for the Allure discussed here. The 5008 features the same engines as the 3008, with both petrol and diesel available. The 1.6 litre petrol in our test car produces 120kW of grunt and will return a combined fuel figure of 7.3L/100km respectively. Despite being front wheel drive only, the 5008 contains five driving modes, normal, mud, sand, snow and ESP off; all of which tailor the engine’s power output to suit the conditions. The interior is easily one of the 5008’s best features. I loved it for its quality touches, complemented by futuristic angles and layout. One could easily see James Kirk doing the school run in one of these. All models get an easy to use touch screen infotainment system coupled with Apple Carplay, Android Auto, 3D Sat Nav, Dual Zone Climate
Control, Blind Spot Detection and Keyless Start as standard kit, plus the 12 inch HD driver display and its features are clear and concise. Inside there are oodles of nooks and crannies for storage, including compartments under the rear passenger foot well. Plus, the extra rear seats can be stored away or removed completely, giving you a whopping 780 litres of boot space. Front and rear, the seats themselves offer plenty of lateral support without sacrificing comfort and the extra length in the wheel base over the 3008, 4641mm, means the 5008 has more space for you to slob out. Head and legroom front and rear is generous even, believe it or not, for the extra seats in the rear. On the move and with la petite steering

wheel in your mitts, you would be forgiven in thinking you were driving a hot hatchback, rather than a seven seater SUV. Steering is nicely weighted and quite responsive, whether in town or on your way to Akaroa, though not what you would normally expect from a car in this class. It’s on the open road where the 5008 really shines with excellent ride comfort and the eager 1.6 litre petrol engine pulls well. Not the USS Enterprise by any means, but commendable performance for a big car nonetheless. Though not for everyone, the new 5008 gives you willing engines, superb comfort and tonnes of space for lugging things about. All in all, a well thought-out package which complements its award winning younger sibling perfectly.

he new XC60 is built on Volvo’s ‘Scalable Platform Architecture’ which it shares with its bigger sibling, the XC90 and, both inside and out, the XC60’s stunning lines leave it almost identical to its flagship brother, apart from some rear light cluster tweaks. The XC60 shares a range of 2.0 litre engines made up of two diesels (D4 and D5) and the T5 and T6 petrol. The addition of a very clever top of line T8 Twin-Engine utilising plug-in electric hybrid technology has also contributed to the new XC60’s bragging rights. Our test car was fitted with the T5 petrol engine with 187kW of grunt and 350Nm of torque, while returning a very respectable 7.3litres/100km. Our car also featured the range topping R-Design style package, which includes a sportier chassis, gorgeous 5-triple-spoke alloy wheels, matte silver door mirrors made for a visual feast when passing shop windows. does extremely well. Every button you press oozes quality and the centrepiece touch screen infotainment system is clear and easy to operate. The XC60 comes with plenty of kit as standard but the optional Premium Pack would definitely be worth considering, which includes air suspension, heated front seats, tinted glass and the truly epic Bowers and Wilkins Sound System, which endured plenty of Hans Zimmer while on test. Front and rear, the XC60 is very spacious with copious amounts of head and legroom. Boot space is good but not massive at 635 litres, though unless you are hauling tombstones, this is not really an issue. Plus the size increases to 1,432 litres with the rear seats folded flat. Moving off and you feel snugly cocooned within the cabin, leaving it easy to see that Volvo is pathological about your safety. Volvo’s proven City Safe system is always on alert, ready to detect if a car is too close in front and put the brakes on quicker than you would yourself. Coincidentally the XC60 was named 2017’s safest car by Euro NCAP with their coveted five star safety rating. On the move in comfort mode and despite the sporty Pirelli P-Zero rubber, every pothole and rough surface feels almost non existent. Performance can best be described as brisk but not super sporty. Then again, the XC60 is more about relaxed progress. In the bends the car does feel heavy, but turn in is crisp and sharp in dynamic mode. One would happily head to Wanaka and back in one of these.

Last year’s Cup Week I was selected by Hertz as an Ambassador for the 2017 Ford Mustang. It was a great insight into the passion Ford owners have for the iconic motor vehicle. All week questions fired at me would have me running to Ford to fill the gaps of knowledge.

here’s Facebook pages dedicated to owners, fun events and drives every month and a real respect amongst owners for different versions. From 1965 to the present, the Ford Mustang is a pop culture icon. The debate over what is was named after, the horse or the P51 plane, still rages on, but in the end it’s a work of art. the hot seat. Ford’s legendary 5.0-litre V8 engine has been thoroughly reworked, with more power and the ability to rev higher than any Mustang GT before. The 2018 Mustang GT has 33kW more power than its predecessor, delivering a peak of 339kW – around 450 horsepower – as standard. This power increase has been achieved with the first application for Mustang of Ford’s new dual-fuel, high-
pressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection on a V8 engine. The 5.0-litre Coyote V8 also packs 556Nm of torque, while the EcoBoost delivers 224kW with 441Nm torque. This made an impressive combination as I took last year’s model around Ruapuna. It’s a stable performer on handling, cornering and steering. This year’s model is out soon. Keep an eye out, you’ll notice it.

bang FOR YOUR BUCK
This year’s new model Mitsubishi 2018 ASX was a real surprise to review. It’s a small SUV but what I discovered was the only small thing about it was the price, with a cost of only $26,000. @nickhenare
F
or that price, one might expect low end features; the ASX was anything but. At 112 kW it had plenty of power to zip around in. It’s a 2L and seemed to be really good on the petrol too. It was a smooth all-wheel drive and plenty of room in the cabin for the kids and all their gear. Interior seating has changed from a fabric version in last years to a funky stitching and leather trim. The rear has been upgraded too taking it from a rather ‘normal’ look to something a little bit more special. A nice set of alloys too, so overall the whole package was a pleasant surprise. iPhone integration on an easy to use 7” touch screen with two USB connection charger/audio ports left me thinking that the ASX has everything that the modern driver looks for. How they do it at that price I’ll never know! Cargo room was enough for anything my family can throw at it. Yes, it doesn’t have the auto rear opening door like its more expensive competitors, but it would tick a lot of boxes on someone looking for an SUV and I still can’t get over the bang for buck you get from this vehicle. Good on you Mitsubishi ASX, go you good thing.

G
umboots, unshaven with a Swanndri and beanie: quite the contrast to this 90kW, 200Nm 0-100 in 8.6 seconds, 5.8 litre athletic performer. However, I got the chance to drop gumboot on the accelerator all the way to the Hurunui and found it a pleasure to drive. It’s a looker – like me, right! – with all the style you expect from Mercedes. A relatively affordable price, with entry level at $47,900. It’s a hatchback, but you wouldn’t know that from the front with its sleek grille. It was great on fuel consumption and even though I’m not a great fan of column shift, most other features make it a good all-rounder. There’s room for school bags, groceries – and real estate signs! The sunroof gives an open cabin feeling and the black and silver interior creates a nice clean feel. Exterior lines and profile are nice too. Things that get the tick? Sunroof, automatic tension adjusting seatbelts, interior, dash interaction, steering and acceleration controls, refined interior and iPad style display. It has its place in the Mercedes fleet: it’s a sporty number for around town and I liked the open road performance. Talk to the team at Armstrong Prestige about a test drive.
