Powerful Partnerships 20 years of providing a platform for success

Metropol is honoured to work with some hugely successful brands and businesses in Canterbury. As we celebrate our 20 year anniversary, we want to take the opportunity to thank our loyal clients for trusting in our abilities to provide a platform to reach their targeted audiences and grow their businesses.

Dr Philip Frost Medical Director, Face Value Cosmetic Medical Clinic

Congratulations to the Metropol team on reaching 20 outstanding years. Face Value has had a relationship with the publication for the past nine years, Metropol being the one constant in our marketing approach over that time. It is well read by our client demographic, both digital and hard copy, and has proven an excellent vehicle to both promote our business and inform the public of new treatments and developments through our editorials. The team are always responsive and helpful and a pleasure to do business with.

Mathew Barr Christchurch BMW + MINI Owner & Dealer Principal

Metropol has made Nurse Maude’s work visible to tens of thousands of people across Canterbury for many years now. It has shown people through our hospice shops, told them to bring us their unwanted, unloved and surplus to requirements household goods for Maude’s on Trade Me and let everyone know that Nurse Maude is well into its second century of caring for the people of Canterbury. What more could we ask for in a partner.

We started advertising in Metropol shortly after the change of ownership and renaming to Christchurch BMW + MINI. Metropol is an almost perfect fit for advertising our vehicles, the production quality and creative presentation of the magazine echo that of the brands. I cannot wait to share with the readers our new BMW + MINI dealership that we are currently building on Moorhouse Avenue, I know that working with Metropol they will have the passion to produce a stunning article about this landmark relocation.

Congratulations to Metropol for their 20th Birthday. Gregg Builders Ltd is proud to be associated and working with Metropol for four years. We have had many comments over the years about some of our features in the Metropol which shows the popularity of this magazine. We look forward to spending many more years displaying our beautiful homes in this wonderful magazine.

EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

Melinda Collins

Publisher Metros Publishing Group (NZ) Ltd Murray Dempsey murray@metros.co.nz

reativity can be an elusive beast at times. Yes some have been known to exchange band-width for tricks of the trade, of which digital page after page can be discovered when writer’s block has well and truly taken hold however, this is by no means fool proof. Sometimes, no matter how much you persevere, it seems inspiration has completely flown the nest and no manner of coaxing will get her back. Though I’m not sure what excuses I have, after all, we’re certainly not short of inspiration on a local level. Cantabrians have been the creators of world-changing concepts, creations and contraptions and, although the ability to innovate and think outside the square isn’t by any means limited to Christchurch, our city’s creative core is certainly a strong example of the kind of clever us Kiwis are truly capable of. Although not new by any stretch, having been founded in 1995 – with a parent company which is even older still – Untouched World is a leading example of this innovative thinking. From a sheep farming family in Canterbury, founder Peri Drysdale has created a brand which is turning heads on a global stage. By focussing on innovative blends of fibres such as merino, possum fur, silk and cashmere, Peri is now one of the country’s most successful entrepreneurs, with the sustainability frontrunner recently being inducted into the New Zealand Hall of Fame. But it’s far from the only example. Businesses both big and small are making their mark on the city. Metropol continues its 20-year tradition of showcasing the very best of Canterbury, from the intangible strength of spirit of its inhabitants to exceptional innovation in business, building and the vision our leaders have for the city’s future.

Polo’s Popularity By Nicholas Henare

What do you get when you take a visually stunning, superb Canterbury day, high fashion, high quality function in North Hagley Park? Seriously good fun is what. At this year’s inaugural Heineken Urban Polo, the ladies were looking fabulous and even the gentlemen had a pretty good shot at it. All the ingredients were there for an epic day in the Garden City.

I

was fortunate enough to be hanging out with Taylor Green, head of marketing for Heineken, giving me a great view of the DJ and the highend crowd in attendance. “Given the overwhelmingly positive response we received last year, it was an easy decision for us to extend the event from two to four cities and give more Kiwis the chance to experience what we have to offer,” Taylor says. “Heineken brings world-class events to life.” I also caught up with Sam Hopkinson, player and partner of the Heineken Urban Polo. “We were very happy with the success of the day, the weather was kind to us and the field was an ideal surface to create a good spectacle of Urban Polo for all those that had never seen it before,” he says. “The setting was quite magical,

8 March 29, 2018 Metropol

watching the polo as the sun went down in Hagley Park and I think it was my favourite event to date.” Christchurch is leading the way through the development of young players, predominantly through school polo, driven by the Wood family and their Waireka Polo farm. But the sport still needs an injection of new energy, Sam says. “Polo in New Zealand needs some new energy, to continue to grow the sport it needs new events like the Heineken Urban Polo to do this,” he says. “For anyone inspired by watching the Heineken Urban Polo and wanting to give it a go, they should be looking up Roddy or Charlie Wood immediately. The local Christchurch players and clubs have been very supportive of our event and helped make the day a great success.” Different from the traditional polo played at the NZ Polo Open every

year, the format has been adapted to a smaller field with simplified rules. Each competing team has three players, one less than traditional polo, and each match is shortened to 30 minutes for face-paced and high-intensity entertainment. “We are polo on a smaller field, therefore fewer players per team, a larger softer ball and simplified rules to help spectators understand. I have added some extra changes for excitement,” Sam says. “We liken ourselves to the seven-aside rugby or big bash cricket. All adaptations of traditional games to help create a better spectacle for those watching.” So, for next year, consider preparing ahead of time, getting your tickets early and making your plan for the new kid in town. Divots don’t stomp themselves, so be there.

taxes A TALENT FOR

Mark Twain once quipped, “What is the difference between a taxidermist and a tax collector? A taxidermist takes only your skin.”

I

n reality of course, getting organised to pay your tax is no joke and, after 27 years as an accountant in Christchurch,

Jason McFadden of McFadden Accounting finds that because our system is complex, few people are getting it right.

out & about

Unlike IRD however, easy-going Jason won’t get cantankerous if you’ve got in a muddle or got behind. In fact, after working in a big accounting firm, Jason decided to specialise in helping small businesses and ‘mum and dad’ investors. Enjoying the personal service his role brings, Jason will meet you, look at your accounts and records and give you a cost-competitive estimate or quote. You can visit his home office, but Jason enjoys travelling to your workplace and doesn’t charge for travel time. He’s happy to help with local investments, or overseas interests requiring assessment under the Foreign Investment Fund (FIF) regime. For small businesses he understands that being audited, paying GST, managing employees with PAYE, Kiwi Saver, child support, or other deductions can be stressful and are a burden when you are passionate about focussing on your business. If the problems of provisional tax based on your previous year’s results are a headache, Jason can help with new IRD option: the Accounting Income Method (AIM) enabling payment of Provisional Tax every one or two months based on actual profit. Happily, a loss made during a period attracts an immediate refund. Visit Jason’s website at www.mcfaddenaccounting.nz.

STYLE SYNONYMOUS WITH

The year 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the Paula Ryan clothing brand, a label which is synonymous with New Zealand and Australian women. Magpie Style Wardrobe Director Bridget Hope talks to Paula about her successful career and secrets to style confidence.

12 March 29, 2018 Metropol

one on one

After 20 years with Paula Ryan clothing, what is the most important thing you have learnt about women and clothing? Most women enjoy shopping, trying on clothes and creating a look. On the whole, they like valued advice and prefer to shop where this is available. They do not always understand the mantra of ‘cost per wear’ so bargains can be a magnet only to later discover they have ‘mistake’ purchases in their wardrobe. What was the first garment you ever designed? In 1998, working with the original Lane Walker family company in Christchurch, I designed the high polo neck slim fit top in New Zealand Merino, because I wanted to hide my own neck. A prime example of how necessity can be the mother of invention – this style is still in our Essentials collection today. What is special about the Paula Ryan brand? The Paula Ryan brand centres around ‘stretch’, even in our footwear. Fabrics are key and the main four fabrics are all jersey knits, developed through a collaboration of science working alongside nature. Our two main fabrics are developed using natural fibers. What inspires you now? Tomorrow and looking at social media along with the changing habits and needs of women. How women live totally consumes me in creating the shapes. Art and nature inspires me for colour. What’s the best piece of advice you have ever taken in business? Look at the four P’s: Plan, People (hire the best), Perseverance and Passion (truly believe in your project).

Paula Ryan is available at Magpie Style, Ballantynes, Fredrick Ashley and Sassy’s.

What’s your number one tip for women? Enjoy dressing with style as it should be a reflection of your personality. Dress your body, not your age. Age is just a number.

What makes Canterbury women unique in their dressing? Twenty years ago, February 1998, when we sold our first collection, which consisted of just four black merino tops, it was Quinns in Merivale who was the first to buy, followed by Ballantynes. Both companies said, ”these are perfect for Canterbury women, because women here appreciate quality”. Now, twenty years on, we still have a strong following in Canterbury and Christchurch city because of this, which makes me proud to be a sheep farmer’s daughter from Canterbury.

Does size matter when it comes to clothes? Your size has no connection to style however, the best quality fabrics create the best clothes. There are no short cuts. When women size 14 or over wear fast fashion (ie. clothing in cheap fabrics) the look will never be stylish. For us, with our jersey knits, our mantra is ‘the magic is in the fabric’. It’s all about the fabric quality for us.

Who are your favorite women and why? I admire women who inspire others. Donna Karan, her big personality and understanding of how jersey knits can flatter all women, Jane Fonda and her own stunning body at 80 through daily exercise, Coco Chanel and her pioneering fashion skills. She made stunning clothes that were comfortable in an era of laced up corsetry.

What’s the best piece of advice that you have given? Read Napoleon Hill’s book Think and Grown Rich. It outlines how we create our own successes and failures and as we grow successful, there is a point when we receive more pleasure from – giving back. The Gates with Warren Buffet are extreme versions of this.

PROPERTY PROWESS

Canterbury’s Red Hot Real Estate is owned and operated by a down-to-earth family man.

F

raser Moore has been simmering along building the marketing side of the business during the company’s inaugural year – but now he’s full steam ahead selling homes. The company name is striking. It stands out – just like these guys.

14 March 29, 2018 Metropol

“You could say we swim in the opposite direction and we try to be a little more real,” says Fraser. In their 20s, Fraser and his brother were landlords buying, selling and managing their own properties. Fraser was in his

element, but then became a primary school teacher and subsequently ran an afterschool education franchise, before finding a business partner to fulfil his realestate dreams at 37. His wife, Karalee, is a teacher at Avonhead School, and they have two children at Russley Primary School. Drawing on past experiences, he relates well to people, understanding familyhome intricacies through to lucrative property investment. Fraser’s Red Hot team includes Daryl Jones and David Eden. “We’re not going to be the big guys. But we are people focused, instead of being solely transaction focused,” he says. “So far we have sold 100 percent of our listed homes. We use all the reputable websites and print mediums such as the Property Press and local papers for advertising, and our photographer produces realistic, professional images.” As the Managing Director, he has the room to move and be flexible, culminating in a professional and personal service. The company offers very competitive commission rates that include some of the marketing – and there’s no fancy overheads eating into anyone’s budget. Visit www.redhotrealestate.co.nz and phone Fraser on 021 975839 or 0800 RED HOT for an obligation-free market appraisal on your home.

playgrounds, all part of the brand new Stewart Junior Centre. The beautiful contrast between fun and formality set the tone for what the new facility will provide – an environment to excel, learn and thrive

while having a great time each and every day. The new development offers three new junior classrooms in one block for Year 1-3 students with an adjacent new preschool and an impressive outdoor facility that ensures education beyond the four walls of classroom is just as enriching. All rooms in the Junior School enjoy high spec engineering, construction, insulation, technology and contemporary furniture and equipment. A Discovery Room provides an incredible avenue for diverse learning including art and cooking. The Stewart family made a significant contribution to the Stewart Junior Centre, designed by Wilkie and Bruce Architects, and built by Armitage Williams. Mark Stewart took a walk down memory lane in his speech saying it was almost exactly 50 years since he started at St Andrew’s as a five-year-old. He said his family was proud of its long association with the college and their support of various projects. His brother Todd and other family members were also in attendance. Preparatory School Principal, Jonathan Bierwirth says, “There is a natural cohesion and close connection between the Junior School and Pre-school, which is significantly enhanced by having both within the new Stewart Junior Centre. It is wonderful to have the youngest members of the St Andrew’s family learning in such close proximity.”

TIED UP

By Melinda Collins

When it comes to the latest style fad, this one has the latest look all tied up.

B

ound, crisscrossed, laced or tied, we’re seeing them all and the laced-up look is making its mark from head to toe, with this delicious detailing featuring on everything from tops and skirts to dresses and shoes. Riding on the coattails of the diversity train, this style chameleon is coming through in evening wear as much as casual wear, and dress pants are being laced up as much as joggers. Sometimes however, it’s the smallest details that make the biggest impact. The smaller application of this style statement are the ties and knots which are coming through, from pretty knit wrist ties on a long-sleeved sweater, to a chic shirt with a twist tie front, even romantic long trailing neck ties are back in the forefront of fashion after a decade-long absence. Who knew knotty could be so nice?

CHIN UP!

At last, the long awaited non-surgical approach to reducing double chins has been approved for use in New Zealand and now administered in Christchurch by Face Value Cosmetic Medical Clinic’s Dr Philip Frost.

Metropol March 29, 2018 21

fashion

“I

am delighted to be one of first doctors in New Zealand trained to offer this treatment,” Dr Frost says. “It has undergone extensive clinical trials and is a safe and effective non-surgical approach to the very common problem of sub-mental fat, or double chin” Sometimes, no matter how much you diet or exercise, the fullness in this area just will not go away. Belkyra® is a prescription only medicine which, when injected below the chin, breaks down fat, resulting in a more contoured neck profile and jawline. The double chin injections feature a product which contains deoxycholic acid, which is found naturally in the body and helps absorb fat in food. The product is injected into the fat in the double chin area and permanently destroys the fat cells by a process known as adipocytolysis. Once the fat cells have been destroyed they cannot accumulate and store fat again. Imagine your fat cells are balloons and double chin injections are darts. Injecting the product under the chin is like throwing a dart at fat cells. Once they have been popped they cannot be blown up again. Clients need between two and six treatments spaced four to eight weeks apart. The New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine (NZSCM) recommends this treatment is administered only by doctors, reflecting international best practice. Contact Face Value to arrange a no obligation consultation or visit www.facevalue.co.nz to find out more.

style maven v a

Lynn Woods is a name and a business that Christchurch respects. Synonymous with timeless fashion and informed sartorial advice, Lynn and her eponymous business are an asset to the business landscape. Metropol talks to the style maven about what makes her tick.

After having been in fashion for so long, what still inspires you? I started my career selling Auckland label Trish Gregory from a studio attached to my home. My mother inspired my love of fashion and my father educated me about business. While a lot has changed in fashion since then, what inspires me has remained the same - beautiful fabrics, great New Zealand design and of course our customers. Lynn Woods is an iconic brand, how have you evolved the business, so it moves with the everchanging times? The business is continually evolving with social media, digital marketing and online shopping. Last year the online laybuy service for our customers

launched – this enables them the ease and convenience of taking garments straight away and they can pay them off in monthly installments, a great service that is becoming increasingly popular. Who is your style icon? Iris Apfel. Iris is an American businesswoman, interior design and fashion icon. At 96 years old, Iris Apfel has a captive audience all over the world who celebrate and adore her memorable and quirky style. What advice would you offer around personal style? ‘Wear everything with confidence’ is my style philosophy. Most importantly, remember tailoring, the measurement. Proportions make all the difference.

Aneurysm risk & assessment

It’s a fancy word, but an aneurysm is simply a dilated blood vessel. As the blood vessel dilates, there is an increased risk of complications such as thrombosis or rupture.

f the abdomen’s main blood vessel – the aorta – becomes dilated or greater than 30mm, it is called an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm or AAA, for short. While the risk of rupture is very low for aneurysms smaller than 55mm, this risk increases with larger aneurysms and those increasing quickly in size. With asymptomatic disease, it’s important to understand the risks of doing nothing versus the risk of intervention. Not surprisingly, the risk of death from rupture within the community is extremely high, whereas the risk from elective repair is relatively low, with most cases only requiring minimally invasive surgery. Unlike the UK or Australia, there is no National Aneurysm screening programme in New Zealand despite a recent observational study of more than 4,000 individuals showing the prevalence of aortic aneurysms in men (ages 65-74) was as high as 9.1 percent and an astonishing 16.8 percent for men aged 75-84, increasing further to 22 percent in the over-85 age group. While not everyone with an aneurysm requires surgery, a simple and relatively inexpensive test can be performed to exclude an aneurysm and determine size when present. At Christchurch Vascular Group, consultant specialist Vascular Surgeon Peter Laws or one of his consultant colleagues can arrange for an ultrasound scan at their clinic in St George’s Hospital or at your chosen provider. Peter can then discuss treatment options or continued observation as required. Why not make an appointment today for peace of mind. Contact Christchurch Vascular Group on 03-365 4502 or email office@cvg.co.nz.

“We make sure each patient is very happy with the final result.”

Reason to People may not be aware of any problems associated with their dentures. When issues develop slowly over time, they adapt and think it is normal.

“C

ommon issues we see with denture wearers are sore or irritated gums, difficulty eating properly, loss of lip or facial support, more

wrinkles around the mouth, sore jaw, increased headaches, loose or slipping dentures, and sores at the corners of the lips,” says Ryan Carlton of Dentures Plus.

Worn or ill-fitting dentures can make it hard to chew and eat properly. As the teeth flatten off over time, it’s harder to chew food effectively. Worn teeth also lose their height and bring the lower jaw up further, compressing the lips and giving the face a sunken-in look, more wrinkles and mouth sores. “Dentures need to be replaced to resolve this. Worn teeth can also lead to a sore jaw and headaches, as it puts more pressure on the joint and surrounding muscles. “Many patients worry new dentures will make them look ‘horsey’ or ‘all teeth’, but although they may show a little more teeth, they should look natural – like they belong to the face. At Dentures Plus we make sure each patient is very happy with the final result, including their look and smile.” Visit www.denturesplus.co.nz.

People constantly come and go through the doors of the large red building that is the Moorhouse Medical Centre. The activity hints at just how busy this long-established practice is. It has been a feature of Christchurch’s central city for more than 20 years – first of all in Washington Way and now in its current location on Pilgrim Place. During those years it has expanded its range of services for patients to reflect the needs of its community.

“N

ew patients and former patients are finding us now that central Christchurch is being re-established,” Moorhouse Medical Clinical Director Dr Neil Beumelburg says. “It’s exciting to be a part of that rebirth after a difficult few years and our medical team is growing to reflect the increased demand. Right now we are accepting new enrolments.” What draws patients to Moorhouse Medical Centre is the diversity of care this practice offers. Besides the usual general practice services there is a travel clinic and a business health service. The medical team of 22 nurses and eight GPs also carry out immigration medicals, skin checks and minor surgical services. “We are a truly multi-disciplinary practice and it is the diversity of our work that is so interesting. One day is never the same as the next.” In addition to its general practice aspects Moorhouse Medical’s other major arm is ‘urgent care’, providing comprehensive medical and nursing services for accidents and medical issues.

“Anyone who has a medical problem or injury can walk into our clinic at any time from 8am to 8pm seven days a week, including public holidays. We provide

A wave of growth and development that shows no sign of abating an alternative for casual patients and after hours care besides the 24 Hour Clinic. No appointment is necessary in

these circumstances to make things as easy as possible. We have X-ray facilities on site which enables us to offer fracture and soft tissue injury clinics, as well as musculoskeletal consultations and we also have physiotherapy available. Treatment of open wounds – cuts requiring stitches – is provided free, as is fracture care, apart from the initial consultation.” Further adding to its credentials, Moorhouse Medical Centre is part of a Christchurch Primary Health Organisation (PHO), along with Riccarton Clinic, Ara Institute and the University of Canterbury. It is also a teaching practice for the Royal College of General Practitioners and for the Christchurch School of Medicine. “But above all, we want to be seen as a patientcentred practice with a professional and friendly approach providing the very best of care.” Moorhouse Medical Centre is open for appointments from 8am to 6pm weekdays and you can also be seen as a casual patient without an appointment 8am to 8pm, seven days a week. O

wned by the Golden Healthcare Group, the concept for the $100 million retirement village was launched post-quake, with the first stage of 101 villas opening in 2015. This year the development at 210 Kittyhawk Avenue has moved one step closer to completion, with the opening of 16 new apartments and a community centre dubbed The Club House, featuring a restaurant, bar, billiard room, movie theatre and library. The next stage of Lady Wigram is also now well underway, and will offer another 14 apartments, a swimming pool, spa and gym. When completed, there will be 73 apartments, a rest home, a dementia facility and a hospital. Golden Healthcare Group purchased the 5.7ha Lady Wigram site in 2013 from Ngāi Tahu Property, the developer of The Landing – the $40 million central hub of the Wigram Skies subdivision, at the heart of which is an architecturally designed town square and a collection of restaurants, cafés, retail and mixed-use community space. Not only is Lady Wigram a short walk from The Landing, it is also just

a short drive to Hornby Mall, the Hornby Working Men’s Club and the city. Everything about the retirement village speaks of the quality and attention to detail this service provider brings to the table, with this resort-style living piquing the interest of a younger demographic. “In our experience, a lot of people are choosing to move into retirement village life earlier because they recognise the benefits of the ease of living and it allows them greater freedom and more social interaction,” owner John Tooby says. “This means that it’s really important for us to provide amenities that help residents to socialise and keep active. More and more, retirement villages are becoming communities within their own right.” Golden Healthcare Group already provides dementia, aged care and mental health support at seven other facilities, employing 259 staff and cares for approximately 350 residents. URBAN SPORTS

As summer has slipped away before our very eyes, it doesn’t mean we have to play by the rules when it comes to the cooler seasons. The great outdoors can still provide a generous backdrop for getting the blood pumping. If you’re a fan of ‘sweat, smile and repeat’ then we’ve got a special list of outside the square urban sports that’ll keep you in tip top shape while offering some comic relief.

1.

Pétanque: Played primarily in Provence, this sophisticated sport is a sibling to boules and is a great backyard sport but is also transportable so can go with you on a picnic or to the park. Burn off that blue cheese and crackers with this game of strategy.

32 March 29, 2018 Metropol

2.

Street golf: If you’ve ever fancied yourself a Tiger Woods or Lydia Ko, then street golf is a stroke of genius. Off the traditional green and onto the gravel, the special golf ball that comes with this new territory means you can play on the street without the fear of a rogue swing landing you in trouble with a window.

3.

Roller skiing: The equivalent to cross-country skiing but minus the white stuff, roller skiing is a sport designed to build stamina. Whether you want to cruise through a park or disappear out to the country and find an empty road, this Scandinavian skill is very adaptable. The two techniques include skating and classic which emulates traditional cross-country skiing (legs forward and back).

Public parks are springing up in the most unusual of places.

Green spaces GROWTH OF

The human populace has been known to push the boundaries to the extreme when it comes to the creation of urban greenspaces, with public parks springing up in the most unusual of places; on the tops of tall buildings, in the middle of stormwater management areas and now, in abandoned underground spaces.

Plans consist of a 9m wide aluminium solar canopy distributing natural sunlight onto a live cultivated landscape ‘park’. Further west, advocates fighting to keep the now-closed Battery Street tunnel in Seattle from being filled with rubble from the demolished Viaduct hope to transform the underground space into a unique public park. es, abandoned rail corridors throughout the world are now being repurposed into linear parks and unused rail lines are being transformed into hiking and biking trails. The conversion of an abandoned underground trolley terminal scheduled to open in 2021, New York’s Lowline has been billed as ‘the world’s first subterranean green space’ after laying unused for more than 60 years.

exciting an

upward trajectory

Adventure capital of the world; winter wonderland; jewel in the tourism crown. The superlatives trip off the tongue when describing the Southern Lakes region, which has long been lauded for its jaw-dropping scenery, adrenalin-inducing activities and fine wine and food.

By Keiran Bleach

W

hether you get your kicks bungy jumping from a great height; hurtling down a river at breakneck speed in a jet boat; sampling a glass of Central Otago pinot noir at a winery; skiing or snowboarding at one of the four mountain resorts; marveling at the majestic waterfalls in Milford Sound or discovering the quaint charm of Arrowtown in all its autumnal glory, it never fails to impress. With Queenstown and Wanaka leading the charge and neighbouring towns (Te Anau, Cromwell, Arrowtown and Hawea to

34 March 29, 2018 Metropol

name just a few) nipping at their heels, the Southern Lakes region is riding a wave of growth and development that shows no sign of abating. While more and more domestic and international tourists flock to the region and pour money in to the economy, its permanent population is increasing at an unprecedented rate. A number of Cantabrians moved to the area – particularly Wanaka – in the wake of the earthquakes. Others bought baches, or a piece of land with an eye to relocating in future. Now the rest of New Zealand is following

suit. Kiwis are starting to shun the big-city hassles and expense for a better quality of life in the regions, and many of them are choosing the Southern Lakes to live in, holiday in, or do a mixture of both. Residential and commercial construction is booming as builders and developers frantically try to keep up with demand. Tradesmen are certainly a soughtafter commodity in these parts. New subdivisions are coming on to the market thick and fast, with sections at Bridesdale Farm (between Queenstown and Arrowtown), Northlake (Wanaka) and the high-end Bendemeer (near Lake

Hayes) being snapped up. Te Anau has also benefited from the Southern Lakes housing shortage as homebuyers and investors have increasingly looked for affordable opportunities there. Businesses are doing a roaring trade too. The ever-expanding Frankton Flats industrial and retail precinct – handily situated on the main road between Arrowtown and Queenstown – is a hive of activity for both locals and tourists. Five Mile shopping centre, with its supermarket and a range of big-box stores, has filled a much-needed gap. The new kid on the block is Queenstown Central. Billed as ‘a premium retail environment’, stage one is due for completion later this year. Young workers continue to gravitate to the bright lights of Queenstown and Wanaka to ply their trade in the hospitality, tourism and ski industries – and, of course, to enjoy the nightlife. At the other end of the spectrum, Queenstown Country Club is being built for retirees. With world-class golf courses nearby, lakes and rivers for fly fishing and boating as well as kilometres of mountain biking and walking trails on the doorstep, it’s easy to see the attraction. Watch this space: Southern Lakes is on an exciting upward trajectory.

“P

eople follow this old-fashioned method of setting up their living space, with the traditional threeseater couch, two armchairs and a rug with a coffee table placed right in the centre of it,” Amanda says. “We’re helping people step back and say ‘do I really need those heavy, static pieces of furniture or could I cut out some of the clutter and free up the space?’” Enter the Intelligent Lounging System, a large collection of high-quality curly woolskin rugs, shaggy bags and stacking stones. Ten sheepskins are used to make one shaggy bag, while six are used to make a set of ‘stones’. Having previously worked in sales and marketing for Icebreaker, Amanda is passionate about how incredible wool is as a fibre. She is keen to spread the word in an interior design context: wool is robust, repels dirt, liquid and odour, and insulates against both heat and cold, making it brilliantly trans-seasonal. At the company’s Wanaka Concept Lounge, customers can have a play with the different colours, textures and shapes. That’s when the penny drops, Amanda says. “Once you get people off their heavy armchairs and lounging on rugs and shaggy bags, they appreciate how the lounging system can totally transform their living space. They are connecting with nature and each other, freeing their spaces both inside and out.” Visit Wilson & Dorset Concept Lounge at 53 Helwick Street, Wanaka. Trends are cyclical by their very nature and yet some of the biggest crazes to hit the culinary scene are cyclical in more ways than one.

W

hile seeds have been ruling the gastronomic game for the longest of times, chia seeds have been pushed off their perch for the first time this year, with a slightly more exotic – and colourful – range of replacements now reigning. Purple potatoes, purple corn, black quinoa, black sesame seeds and the ancient Peruvian superfood seed, kiwicha are now on the up. Kiwicha, also known as amaranth or ‘mini quinoa’ is a small pseudo cereal noted for its dense nutritional content which has seen it reach superfood status in recent years. Black quinoa is an earthier and sweeter-tasting option compared to white quinoa and maintains its colour when cooked. As with all quinoa varieties, it’s gluten-free and packs a powerful nutritional punch. One of the most ancient forms of corn is Kculli, a beautiful purple variety that was once an Incan empire staple. Said to contain higher antioxidant capacity and free radical fighting ability than any other grain or fruit, it is more nutritionally dense than its traditional counterpart. Black Sesame seeds are one of oldest condiments known to man. Highly valued for their oil, they pack a nutritional punch that far outweighs their small stature. So why not start getting a bit more creative in the kitchen with some cynical superfoods?

Monisha (Mon) Sharma hails from exotic India where food is full of soul – no superlatives will do these dishes justice. Mon has brought her heritage and her creative convictions to New Zealand and is wooing a captive Instagram audience with her culinary charm. A little bit Kiwi, a little bit Indian, a little bit hard-to-put-your-finger on, Mon’s creations are charming to mind, body and soul. Metropol talks to the fabulous foodie about her claim to social media fame.

40 March 29, 2018 Metropol

3

How did ‘Mon’s Flavours’ start on Instagram? I’m actually not a food blogger. My background was working full-time in a restaurant and when I moved to New Zealand, this all just happened. I actually wasn’t very well for a while and I started playing around with recipes at home. It was my son who said, ‘Why don’t you start Instagramming?’ and he set me up with the account. At the time, I didn’t even know what a hashtag was or how to use a camera! I started putting up my smoothies and recipes and I think this started to resonate with people. I just kept being original. I love making people laugh and smile.

Where does your inspiration for your colourful and unique recipes come from? I do every single thing from scratch. Being Indian, I love different ingredients from my culture and also from others and like to mix and match. A lot of recipes I have created are not necessarily made from anything fancy – it could just be everyday ingredients from your cupboard – for example, my avocado smoothie. I might add in peanuts, or cacao powder, or add some magical pear. I like to create what is delicious, healthy and filling.

You are a vegetarian, how does this influence what you create? When people ask me how I have survived being a vegetarian until now – 43 years old – I say, ‘Well, I can run with more energy than a meat eater!’ I like to prove them wrong and when I tell them I have a 21-year-old son they say, ‘Wow, you must be doing something right!’” I love to work with vegetarian ingredients. When it comes to cooking or baking you just have to love what you do and be confident in your decisions.”

ot only is The Coffee Fans a bright, airy place with great cabinet food and menus, it’s pet friendly as well. Doggies are welcome in the smoke-free al fresco dining area where you can sit, relax and watch the world go by. In the cabinet is a vast array of delicious food. There are salads such as ‘roast cauliflower and broccoli’ and the ‘energy booster salad.’ There are croissants and bagels with cream cheese, salmon, or pesto. There is also an assortment of pastries and some of the biggest wraps – such as the tandoori wrap, or the falafel hummus and mixed salad wrap, with many more available. Of course, there are sweets. Slices and muffins, and that old favourite, lolly cake. Or apple crumble shortbread. Something that will need to be experienced is the ‘fairy floss cheesecake,’ likely to be as decadent as it sounds. The Coffee Fans is open 7 until 5 weekdays, and 8 until 5 weekends. The light menu is available 9 until 1 Monday to Friday, and the brunch menu 9 until 2 Saturday and Sunday. Popular are the eggs benedict on the weekend menu, and the French toast – with a bacon option – on weekends. There are lots of vegetarian and gluten free choices, too. Drop by The Coffee Fans at 159 Cranford Street, grab a coffee and a treat, bring your pooch, and read the latest copy of Metropol from the stand. There is free wi-fi and lovely, friendly staff.

wo years on and now accompanied by good friend Caitlyn, Coco Espresso is going from strength to strength, with many making it their definitive café of choice. Nick and Caitlyn’s vision of a niche, chilled café hang-out has certainly become a reality. Comfortable indoor seating will accommodate your nearest and dearest, and outdoor Montreaux designer furniture sits plenty in chic comfort. Plus, unlike some cafés, there is no shortage of on-site parking. The major attraction of Coco Espresso, is not just the smooth rich coffee or the outstanding customer service from Nick and Caitlyn, but the sandwiches. Available in a variety of fillings and styles, it pays to get in quick, as they do not hang around uneaten for long. All sweet and savoury delicacies are made by Nick and Caitlyn’s friend Sarah from Blueberry Kitchen and arrive fresh each day. Nick and Caitlyn also love their music, so whether you are into Demi Lovato or Duran Duran, chances are you will be humming away during your stay. clever eats creatively

Living on the Chatham Islands for many years pushed Delwyn Lanauze to be creative with the resources she had at hand. This might go some way towards explaining the clever flavour combinations of the pies she has lovingly made in her café and bakery, Mrs Dentons, at 168a Kendal Ave, Burnside.

V

Delwyn Lanauze

enison, raspberry and cream cheese; the Chatham Island blue cod, parsley and leek; venison and mushroom are just a few. “We’re also one of the few places to do a scallop pie,” Delwyn says. “That’s a big hit.” This innovative take is also evident in the range of chutneys, horseradish and relishes on display, which includes cherry, beetroot and raspberry. There are always fresh salads and soups – also with delicious flavour combinations such as Thai pumpkin and cauliflower – delicious cold deli options include lasagne, gluten-free frittata and tortilla stacks mean you’re covered for every meal

Vintage Vibes By Melinda Collins

T

he prevailing popularity of the vintage vibe has seen it become an enduring style staple with a quality that transcends time. And, with the cyclical nature of trends bringing things back into the fashionable forefront time and time again, vintage styles are even easier to integrate into the modern home. Vintage pieces are not only adaptable to current trends, but are often timeless classics that can become a centrepiece in your space.

The prevailing popularity of the vintage vibe has become a style staple.

There’s something deliciously authentic about 20, 30 and 40 year old homewares with their ability to bring a well-loved homeliness and cosy warmth to a space.

Although garage sales and flea markets can yield just the right treasure to complete a collection and make your space, sometimes time just isn’t on your side when it comes to trawling. So designers, furniture makers and even wallpaper companies are coming to the homewares party with new ‘old’ things, so your abode can look the vintage part.

“C

ustomers are often amazed at our ability to return furniture to its former glory, or even better,” says Steve McDonald. “The work may be painstaking and require absolute attention to detail, but seeing both the finished article and the customer’s reaction is the real reward for us.” Delight and amazement was the reaction from a customer recently at the sight of her restored traditional wing chair – handed down to her from her grandmother. “The chair was just

a bare frame when it arrived in our factory, so it was almost like making a completely new chair,” Steve says. “Over some 20 hours we built the frame up again with new springs, new webbing, foam and tetron. The frame was also reglued and cleaned and the legs were repolished. And finally, the chair was covered in a simply beautiful fabric.” The stunning Designers’ Guild Palasini Cobalt velvet-style fabric was very carefully selected. “The customer wanted a colour and style that would represent her grandmother – a floral influence, but still modern, contemporary and slightly avant-garde. With its very wide wings and the eyecatching fabric, the chair now really makes a statement as a feature piece in the home – a ‘useful work of art’ is the way the client describes it.” If you have furniture in need of restoration, enquiries are welcomed at McDonald and Hartshorne’s re-upholstery factory and fabric showroom at 430 St Asaph Steet by appointment – phone 03-371 7500. get to look at art all day and talk with the lovely students,” says Sarah. “Seeing works progress – it’s nice to know I can positively impact development.” Sarah, who has a degree in Art History and in Fine Arts, tutors both beginners and advanced students, and is comfortable teaching all genres. Visual art tutor and freelance professional animator, Rodolfo, says the diverse skill levels and interests of his students are both enjoyable and challenging. “It forces me to recall some of the techniques I learned and problems I encountered while working on my own projects.” Sarah has great advice for beginners. “Try not to be apprehensive! We can break down the elements of a painting

into manageable, achievable chunks. You will find success; everyone here is very positive and encouraging!” Rodolfo’s advice to those returning to art after time out is to get back to basics. “Instead of creating a big masterpiece, do small studies; it will help get the feel of the essential skills and technicalities in painting.” Sarah’s personal preferred medium is oils. “My style? Earnest contemporary figurative painting!” Rodolfo’s favourite artist is Frank Frazetta. “Great art tells a story, evokes emotions, creates an imprint – it compels us to look again and again.” Interview over, Sarah and Rodolfo rush back to their beloved easels. When people think of O’Neil Architecture, it might conjure up images of its award-winning homes scattered throughout New Zealand, or perhaps founder and Principle Designer Darren O’Neil springs to mind.

owever, there is a team of talented folk behind the scenes who passionately bring clients’ visions and dream homes to life – guiding clients through the rollercoaster journey that is designing and building their new home and which has helped build the successful and recognised name ‘O’Neil Architecture’ as it stands today. A tight knit team of eight, the boutique office offers a very personalised high-end service. Senior Designer, David Rea, leads the technical team, collaborating on the designs with Darren for more than 13 years. Their robust, comprehensive approach has been refined over the years; they complement each other, continually questioning and pushing the boundaries to create truly inspired, timeless and elegant homes. “Clichéd as it sounds, a successful company and the incredible work that is produced is built from the inside out,” David says. With a positive and challenging working environment and a relaxed atmosphere, it’s obvious why there is such low staff turnover in an age where professionals tend to jump ship every 2-4 years. So much so that Practice Manager Lucy Ross works from Auckland, commuting weekly after recently moving cities – neither party wanted a complete break! “It’s fantastic to be working for such a flexible and modern company that values and invests in its staff and understands if they’re happy and appreciated, it’s going to show through their work.”

installed the boundary fence at Kaiapoi North School using loop-top pool fencing in Heritage Red. Previous projects include Shirley Primary’s fence, the decks at Akaroa and Sumner schools, and Oxford Area school’s retaining wall. Initially the two Andrews were colleagues on a Canterbury farm until 2014 when they teamed up to become a formidable partnership. Osgood has done the hard yards – literally – 160kms of fencing on a station in Nullarbor, Western Australia. A perfectionist, he’s particular with the finished project – down to the nuts and bolts. The job’s not done until its perfect. Pratley is the man of action, having previously managed his own farm. Including their hard-working assistant Josh Knight, they’re a small but great team with flexibility – for farms through to family homes. Their equipment includes a 1.5-tonne excavator and they source cost-effective, high quality materials. “If you want a good fence, don’t skimp,” advises Osgood. “In the long-run it’s best to spend a little more.” He says the ideal time to build a deck is winter. Materials are cheaper and it’s their quieter season. “When the recommended products are used, we always give a 12-month warranty.” Visit www.andrewsofcanterbury.co.nz or phone Andrew Osgood on 027 899 3556.

hich is rather an exciting prospect, when it comes to our inner-magpies. Long gone are the days when the fixtures in our houses – taps, handles, pipes, shower heads – lacked personality. And the creatively clever are using metallics in unique new ways – with accessories, cabinetry, furniture and even flooring getting the metallic makeover. Not only are we seeing a renaissance of copper, but also bold golds, striking silvers and charming brass hues are creating clean, modern and vibrant environments within our homes – even in the less ‘sexy’ spaces like our bathrooms. With accessories like the Round Champagne Kitchen Mixer pictured, Meir demonstrates how metallic finishes can add glamour and sophistication to a room through some of the smallest items. The ultimate aesthetic pick-me-up for your abode, the magic of metallics will no doubt continue to endure.

home Cymon Allfrey

FALLING INTO LINE

Architect Cymon Allfrey explains why following the rules ultimately leads to a more successful outcome – for us and our city.

There will always be red tape. The processes required to reach an outcome at times can seem onerous, cumbersome and tedious – yet the role of rules in society creates order, structure and, in terms of architecture, often a stronger, more successful outcome.

A

question was raised recently on an online forum whether there was too much red tape being applied in the design of the central city when it came to illuminated signage. And that as a result of this red tape, we were diminishing our ability to achieve a vibrant and engaging city. Taking into consideration a number of factors, including the affect these signs have on drivers, our city plan doesn’t favour intermittent lights or flashing neon signs. Rather it has a focus on creating sophisticated characteristics and high quality built spaces. When looking at our city we need to be careful that we aren’t confusing energy with tricks and props. The energy comes, and will continue to come from, quality retailers, diverse businesses and residential development. All of which reside within smart, high quality design, there to create

a level of interaction and engagement with the surrounding space. We have to achieve a well-planned and considered central city, before we can dress it up. Inherently the city needs to perform well to attract the people and the energy; without this no matter how we decorate it, the energy and vibrancy will fail to thrive. Factors that the red tape ensures are placed first on the priority list. There is no denying over the last couple of years that we have seen a shift away from static billboards to more interactive, digital replacements. I am absolutely in favour of seeing some embellishment through digital signage, as it can help to create a more dynamic building façade, and bring a different dimension and atmosphere to a space at night that couldn’t be achieved without it. Yet we need to ensure we don’t become a city of advertisements; a city of visual pollution and no substance.

Photo supplied by christchurchnz.com

If we consider London’s Piccadilly Circus or New York’s Times Square, these are concentrated deliveries of moving signage, there to create atmosphere. Their visual aspect has made them a destination, yet they are examples of highly considered spaces where the quality has been enhanced through layers of embellishment. No matter what you dress a space up with, unless it has been designed correctly there will be no engagement. Cathedral Square is an example where a lack of considered design has created a space that is too large for regular engagement and high levels of energy. Unlike the prequake central city laneways, which were highly successful spaces bursting with activity. We are on the right track to achieve a vibrant and energetic city centre, we just have a process to go through to get there. The presence of red tape allows everyone to have an opinion, while the ongoing parameters it brings ensures we have the building blocks to achieve a city of integrity, quality and engagement. You don’t often think of the qualities of compassion, empathy and confidentiality as being prerequisites for cleaning companies working in houses, offices and retail outlets.

B

ut these are essential attributes for the team at Sunshine Cleaners because this company works in the highly specialised fields of forensic cleaning and confidential cleaning of any type. The term forensic cleaning covers a range of services, from crime scene cleanup, meth decontamination and odour remediation, to blood, bodily fluid and suicide cleanup. “Sometimes forensic cleaning follows traumatic events,” says Sunshine Cleaners founder Thea Turner. “Clients may be very upset in these difficult situations and our approach combines professionalism and integrity with sensitivity, empathy and respect.” Sunshine Cleaners is a family-owned and operated company and the close-knit team is pedantic about high standards of cleanliness. “We never know what we are

going to encounter. No two jobs are ever the same. We might be dealing with a freezer full of rotten food that has been left off for a long time, contaminated ceiling insulation, a methamphetamine decontamination, or we might be cleaning up a rental property.” Rental property owners Leonie and Peter Austin had just such a job carried out by Sunshine Cleaners. “They did a fantastic job cleaning the house from top to bottom, even getting marks out of a set of curtains we thought we would have to replace due to being so badly stained,” they said. “A very professional job in a short space of time – we couldn’t be happier.” Contact Thea on 027 232 3193, email sunshinecleaners@outlook.co.nz or visit www.sunshinecleaners.co.nz. FUTURE OF BUILDING By Allison O’Neill

When the Queenstown market leaders of energy efficient homes ‘Evolution’ (a division of Rilean Construction) wanted to expand to Christchurch, potential clients were keen and kept asking “is there one we can see?” There are 50 such homes, but they are all in Queenstown, so Rilean Construction Canterbury Manager/Director Trevor Meikle decided to build Canterbury the piece-de-resistance of energy efficient homes.

Proud to work with Evolution Energy Efficient Homes

The wall insulation is R4.2 and the ceilings are R5.2, well above building standard. A key factor in energy efficiency is the air tightness. “The ‘Fairview’ windows and doors suite was used on ‘The Block’ and got very high results for the airtightness test. This is why we picked Canterbury Aluminium to provide the windows. “The airtightness test for this home was incredible at 0.74 air changes per hour at n50. Canterbury Aluminium is exceptional at what it does,” Trevor says. The windows are thermally broken (a layer of plastic between) so exterior cold cannot transfer indoors. The home is mechanically ventilated with the ‘Rolls Royce’ of home ventilation systems: a Moisture Master Home Heat Recovery system. The technology to manage such a smarthome is Econnecx: a system run from your phone or computer. “Everything is managed, measured and programmable,” Trevor explains. “When you leave, it checks everything is off (except things like fridges), so power is not wasted. It allows you to control your security system, lights, heating or access gates and garage doors and turn appliances on or off whenever you choose. You can even unlock your front door for visitors if you are not there.” With a background of 30+ years in

home

“A standard build has a Homestar rating of 2-3 and Evolution delivers a minimum of 6 stars,” Trevor says. This Christchurch beauty blew that number out of the park, coming out as a 7-8. The energy efficiency starts right from the base with a MAXRaft fully insulated slab. “This is the future of building – no power bills,” Trevor says. “Twenty solar panels with battery backup means we are set. The 10,000 litre tank collects rainwater, which is pumped back to toilets, the washing machine, the tub and external taps. The home has LED lighting and Wels rated tapware that reduces water flow from a standard 18L a min down to 6L,” he continues. “The bath is made from 30 percent recycled materials which also keeps the bath water hot for 30 percent longer. The decking is recycled plastic composite, there are fruit trees on the property and a vege garden to keep the fridge full.” Nothing has been overlooked, even the undercover washing line means it can be used in all weather so, no excuses. The home is double insulated. After the first layer Proclima Intello Airtight is wrapped (including taping to seal the floor and windows), then the exterior walls have another 45x45 batten and another layer of horizonal insulation where the wires and pipes are blanketed.

construction and project management, Trevor loves all the metrics and teaching clients about their smart homes. Established more than 20 years ago, Rilean Construction has won numerous Master Builder awards, a coveted Trade & Construction Queenstown Chamber of Commerce award and received Queenstown’s first six-star Homestar rating for an Evolution home. Number 15 Dove Grove, Westmorland will open as a showhome on April 10, with viewing available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4pm. Visit evolutionseries.co.nz.

HOT PROPERTY By Ben Selby

When Lexus launched the NX back in 2014, it very quickly became hot property for buyers in the luxury compact SUV market, with its groundbreaking design, quality and attention to detail. Fast forward to 2018 and the old favourite has been given new life by way of a few updates, so we went to find out exactly what’s what.

L

exus has a unique design philosophy that couldn’t be more Japanese. The same striking Transformer like angles and curves carry on, but it offers an updated front end, accompanied

by the trademark wide grill and LED headlights are fitted as standard. There are four models that make up the revised NX range. The entry level NX300 in two-wheel

motoring drive, the NX300 in four-wheel drive, the F-Sport and the Limited spec, with the latter two available with an optional hybrid set up. The NX300 AWD featured in our test, is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine producing 175kW of grunt and 350Nm of torque. Mated to a six speed automatic box, the AWD returns 5.7L/100km respectively. A 2.5 litre petrol engine works in conjunction with hybrid models and eco, normal and sport drive modes still make an appearance. The major overhaul as far as tech is concerned is with driver safety, with all models now coming standard with adaptive cruise control, automatic high beam headlights, lane keep assist, lane departure alert, rear cross traffic alert

and blind spot monitoring. The 7-inch infotainment screen, displaying sat nav, air con, media and other bits and bobs has grown to 10.3 inches, giving much more clarity. Plus the Mark Levinson sound system, which has been a regular feature in past models, makes a welcome return. All features can be controlled via Lexus’ laptop like touchpad, though this is not quite as cutting edge as I was expecting. The sumptuous heated/airconditioned leather chairs are perfect for slobbing out on the commute home. For rear seat passengers, head room can be a little restrictive however, this can be remedied by titling the electric reclining 60/40 split folding rear seats. On the move, the turbo four pot pulls

well, with most of its 175kW coming to life low in the rev range. The new NX range benefits from retuned suspension so cornering smoothly is an effortless pastime. Select sport mode and flick down a paddle for the often mandatory overtake and the NX performs this task with ease. The NX’s coup de grace is ride quality, even the pothole-ravaged roads of Christchurch are hardly noticeable. Simply stick it in eco mode and waft away. Prices for the 2018 NX range start at $82,400 and, after spending a week in its company, the Lexus NX’s little updates all add up to make a better all rounder and leaves little doubt that it’s future in this very competitive market is secure.

Wooing By Nicholas Henare

THE CROWDS

Madam Woo recently hosted the launch of the 2018 BMW X2. I caught up with celebrity Michelin chef and co-owner of Madam Woo, Josh Emett, who is also an ambassador for BMW. “I’ve been driving BMW for years,” Josh says. @nickhenare

“I

bought my first BMW when I lived in the USA and have been a massive fan ever since. It’s great for Madam Woo to host such a fantastic event.” Madam Woo was filled with lots of expectant BMW fans. It’s hard not to win over a crowd with such great food, but the reveal didn’t disappoint either. Having had to lift the X3 and the X2 in by crane, the wait was well worth it. The X2 unveiled a sleek, small SUV. With a low profile and some beautiful curves, it’s a great addition to the X range. The BMW X2 is available with two distinct engine options for the local market. The sDrive18i petrol variant generates a maximum output of 100kW of power and 220Nm of torque, while fuel consumption is still an impressive 5.4l/100km. Topping the range is the sDrive20i variant, with an engine delivering 141kW of power and 280Nm of torque. Also remarkable is fuel economy of just 5.9l/100km. Christchurch BMW Dealer Principal Mathew Barr revealed some artistic impressions on the new dealership building and talked about the move toward electric vehicles within BMW. It was great to talk with some other BMW family/aficionados on the night and great to see one of my favourite brands moving forward here in Christchurch.

Great

GOLFING GETAWAY By Nicholas Henare

As the automotive writer for Metropol, I was fortunate enough to be invited to the Autosure Golf Tournament at the wonderful Harewood Golf Course. Joined by car people from across the industry, we started the event with a slap-up BBQ which gave us time to meet and network.

I

was assigned to the team from Car Clearance Centre, Craig Erickson and Hilton Arlidge, with Heather McFarlane from Autosure to keep us in check. I could tell from the start it would be a challenging 18 holes of golf, not for the game but the laughs and comedic routine of the group I was with. I wasn’t disappointed. What was great about the event was it brought together all those people from the automotive industry to network and have an enjoyable day in the sun. After such a fantastic event at a superb golf course I’m looking forward to the next Autosure event. James Searle says, “It was a great opportunity to take time out from day to day work with our dealers and partners to enjoy each other’s company and to chat about the industry in this fantastic weather”. Autosure was established in 1986 and provides car insurance, mechanical insurance, lifestyle protection insurance. Mechanical breakdown and payment protection plans are, after all, an essential purchase these days and with such pleasant, professional people to deal with, you can rest assured you’re in good hands. Although our score on the course wasn’t brilliant, the fun on the day got a 10/10.

during the First World War before the focus turned from aircraft to motorcycles post-World War II and a world champion was born. The glory years for MV Agusta were from 1948 when Franco Bertoni won the 125 cc in the Italian Grand Prix, to 1976 when Agusta retired from Grand Prix racing at the end of the 1976 season, having won 270 Grand Prix motorcycle races, 38 World Riders’ Championships and 37 World Constructors’ Championships. After a few years off the track, 2004 marked the company’s return to racing and to victory and every year has been a little bit better for this racing legend. MV Agusta has taken the bold step of adding the initials of the company’s racing department – Reparto Corse – and the move signifies the exceptional quality and styling which is directly derived from its efforts at the World Superbike Championship. There’s an exciting range of five Reparto Corse special edition models available from MV Agusta, from the high-end F3 RC supersport in both 675 and 800 versions, to the new special Brutale 800 RR Pirelli, the updated version of the rare and collectable Dragster 800 RC and the F3 800 has joined the gang.
