ith Canterbury Fashion Week next week, and our latest cover a fashionable nod to what we can expect from this year's show, I've been thinking quite a lot about the subject. es, that would pretty much sum up the thought processes I would have wandering along the beach if I ever managed to visit those Isles of Whisky. But lucky for Cantabrians who want to take part in whisky festivities, we have Ardbeg Day on Saturday 3 June. From 9.30am to 5pm, we will plunge deep under the sea and bring these legends to life at Whisky Galore at 834 Colombo Street! Bearing in mind the ever important tees and cees - you must be 18 years or older to attend Ardbeg Day. If you are, then you’ll delight in being among the first in the world to celebrate the unveiling of the limited edition 2017 bottling, Ardbeg Kelpie, with an array of themed activities, paired canapes and all things Ardbeg. I joined in on the event last year and found there were a lot of others who got into the “spirit’ of things too. Go in for a tasting and chat to the team at Whisky Galore to have a bit of fun. In the 20th Century, New Zealand born spy heroine Nancy Wake, dubbed the ‘White Mouse’ by the Gestapo, once cycled 500 kilometres over 71 hours, passing through several German checkpoints, to replace vital codes her wireless operator had been forced to destroy in a Gestapo raid. Without the codes, there could be no fresh orders or drops of weapons and supplies. Nancy’s story was told in the highly acclaimed novel Charlotte Grey, later adapted for screen.

‘Cycle Chic’ has had three years of planning, and Brett Cotter, Curator and Director of the Big Bike Film Nights has this to say of the collection: “It’s always been my ambition to showcase a range of bike films that inspire, encourage and celebrate women who love to bike.” Brett says he had a 2am epiphany one morning that the concept of ‘Cycle Chic’ was pretty unique and special. “If I’m right, then this collection of short films dedicated to female bike riders is a world first, and here it is debuting in New Zealand.” Described as having a ‘world cinema’ feel, the films feature an urban planner who dreams of having a cycling lane in her home city (no easy task as she lives in East Africa); a couples’ bike journey across America where love and adventure come together; a London bike store owner with her unique point of difference; mountain biking in Japan; some Melbourne women fixated with “fixie” bikes, and two stories, set in South Africa and Afghanistan, that illustrate how bikes can empower communities. “’Cycle Chic’ has a theme of exploring and pushing boundaries,” says Brett, “it shows women who are courageous and advocates for change, with the humble bike being the unifying factor throughout these films.” Brett acknowledges it is a female orientated collection, but says because the stories and the people are real, both genders will connect and enjoy the films. There are now eight hospice shops across the city; in Merivale, Avonhead, Sumner, The Palms, Beckenham, Bishopdale and Kaiapoi and Rangiora. “Our hospice shops are very much part of the community,” says Sue “and everyone who donates to, or buys from, us is directly supporting the Nurse Maude Hospice.” Right now the hospice shops are in dire need of good quality winter clothing, particularly women’s tops and jackets and larger sized women’s clothing, so whether you’re cleaning out your wardrobe or just have one jersey, jacket or warm top, you’ll be welcomed with open arms. Nurse Maude has been caring for the people of Canterbury for more than 120 years and is an integral part of the community. “Fortunately, the community has always been an integral part of us too,” says Sue “and it has been doing a brilliant job of supporting us”.

Copies of smash hit record covers blanket the walls and ceiling. “I spent hours at the local photocopiers,” says Ros, “and there’s still room for more.” We stare at the naked patch above us till Ros says, “Nah – I’ll leave it bare – the unfinished masterpiece.” Open from Wednesdays through to Sundays, 5pm to 2am, this is the place to indulge your hedonist desires, as you stretch out by the fire like a well contented cat, and treat yourself to the best of food and beverages while being entertained as you’ve never been entertained before! Ros outlines her ambitions for the future. “I plan to develop the creative vibe in here – exhibit great art on our walls; feature bands, soloists, poets, performance poets and writers. We’ll have open mic nights, and host events. It’s not about the dollars; it’s about providing a space that supports our people to show what they can do.” Ask Ros for a best moment and she’s quick to reply: “When the club’s buzzing, everybody’s happy, then somebody calls out, “We love this place!”

COLOUR BACK IN YOUR LIFE
T
amzyn Adding’s bright and bold business may have found its legs without much prior expectation, but the success of the concept is definitely not fortuitous. Adding talks to Metropol about how she saw a niche in the furniture market and she filled it with a kaleidoscope of loud and proud colour. Where did the inspiration for the Miss Lolo concept come from? There was no pre-planned idea or a business plan of any sorts. Miss Lolo was a complete and utter fluke, as someone with no furniture or upholstery training in the early days, I was literally a fish out of water! It started out with me taking the boring beige couches we had and I then had them upholstered in a bright pink fabric. Family and friends were like, ‘Wow! Cool!’ so I thought, ‘Oh, really? I’ll buy a couple more and do the same and see what happens’… every piece sold ridiculously fast on Trademe much to my shock horror. So I started the FB page and within a matter of months we had 10,000 followers. At that point I thought, ‘OK, I might be onto something here…’ Your profile has grown immeasurably over recent years, what do you attribute that to? I think it’s attributed to a couple of different things; the first is undeniably colour. People are drawn to colour. Colour is emotive and we are one of the very few furniture brands who embrace it entirely. I think much like marmite, people either love us or hate us, but regardless, they know who we are and that’s all I want is to be a brand that people remember. Secondly, I attribute it to me being upfront and a little brash … I have no airs or graces; what you see is what you get and that’s very much how I run my social media pages. I think for that reason people have found me and the brand approachable and much like themselves. At the end of the day I’m the average Kiwi mum of four daughters who just happens to be running a growing business at the same time.

What is the most satisfying part of your entrepreneurialism and what is the most challenging? As someone with a design based business I’m a bit of an anomaly in that I love numbers. I have spreadsheets for Africa and know exactly what’s where, where’s what, if margins are being met etc. The accounting side of the business and watching it grow is what ultimately motivates me. As time’s gone on, and the business has grown, I’ve had to step back from the design side of things (although I’m still in there daily making design decisions). I have to spend more time on the business growth side of the company. The most challenging without a doubt was being diagnosed with cancer last year. That put a major spanner in the works! Cancer aside, the most challenging is capital. With rapid growth comes major expense, and I always feel like our growth is held back by our lack of capital. So it’s a slow and steady growth at the moment instead. Why the name Miss Lolo? My grandmother was called Lois and everyone referred to her as Lolo, it’s also my middle name. She was crazy artistic like the bulk of my family and often pushed the boundaries both socially and creatively, so I thought it was a pretty good fit. What have been some of your favourite projects or pieces? My favourites are where the client goes bold. As so much of what we do now is client led, all we can do is guide them in the right direction. Even though people love the idea of colour when it comes down to the business end of things so many will still choose to go with something more subdued, but when a client actually goes with a crazy bold colour or pattern they’re my absolute favourites!
COLOUR IS EMOTIVE AND WE ARE ONE OF THE VERY FEW FURNITURE BRANDS WHO EMBRACE IT ENTIRELY. How would you describe your creative approach? The only approach we take as a company is to bring colour back into people’s lives. What does a day in the life of Miss Lolo look like? Freaking mad! I’m up at 6.30am every morning and the next 2.5 hours revolves around me getting 4 kids up and out the door. From 9am, I’m back in front of the computer which is generally where I sit through until 2.45pm. Then it’s back getting the kids from school, dinner on, kids showered … at 5pm every night I stop entirely for an hour and sit down for a wine (or 2) with my husband to debrief and relax. Then once the kids are in bed I spend until around 10pm answering Facebook enquiries and catching up on any work I’ve missed during the day. Favourite mantra? “You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world and there’s still going to be someone who hates peaches.” Dita Von Teese “You want your business to be like marmite. Leonard Charles Huia Lye was born in Christchurch in 1901. One sunny day, little Len kicked an empty kerosene can around his back yard. The flash of light and thunder clap that emitted from the can, triggered a revelatory moment that would be referenced repeatedly throughout his artistic career.
I
n 1922, Lye moved to Sydney and began experimenting with kinetic sculpture. Four years later, he moved to London, and in 1928 became a member of the artist collective Seven and Five Society (Frances Hodgkins joined the following year). Lye began film-making, combining Māori, Aboriginal, Samoan (Lye had briefly lived in Samoa) and modernist influences in his animated works. Lye visited New York in 1944, and decided the Big Apple was for him. His works in abstract expressionism, kinetic sculptures, and film began attracting international recognition. He was granted American citizenship in 1950. On his second visit to New Zealand, in 1977, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth, offered to build large-scale versions of sculptures never realised by Lye. All of his major works were bequeathed to the Govett-Brewster Gallery upon Lye’s death in New York, in 1980. With the support of the Len Lye Foundation, New Plymouth, the Len Lye: Stopped Short by Wonder exhibition is coming to Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu from 5 August – 12 November. hile the traditional attire for an evening of indulgent celebration has often called for female guests to wear their best frocks, we’re turning our backs on the status quo and opting for something that is equally as elegant – the silk jumpsuit. SKINNY ANKLES – New boot styles are seeing almost sock-like qualities designed to emulate the shape of your leg. If you have narrow ankles, it’s time to stock up large. These styles hug the leg and look best with blackout (60+ denier) pantyhose to create a longer silhouette. Reserve your sheer black hosiery for evening and reach for black opaques or nude pantyhose for day. Controltop pantyhose do magical things for waistlines, so take advantage of this while the weather calls for it. OVER THE KNEE BOOTS – If your legs are your best asset (meaning the envy of all your girlfriends) then these are for you. That said, over-the-knee boots are in their second season, so while still popular now, may be best avoided by the budget conscious. BLOCK HEELS – Heels on boots are becoming squarer and wider which for us means more comfortable. To find the best pair, look for soles with good rubber tread (min 2mm) which will add comfort and cushioning to the balls of your feet. Ever wondered why some boots are just more comfortable than others? Chances are they will feature inner cushioning under your soles and heels. Let this be your guiding light. IN THE NUDE – Fabulous with light denim and pale colours, nude leather boots suit weekend over workwear. They also visually connect the dots when teamed with soft pastel knits and pale leather/ suede jackets, also popular now. Hot tip – when you buy nude or coloured leather, try to source the matching shoe polish at the same time. Then you won’t tire of them at the first sign of wear and tear.

SUEDE – Yes, it’s making a comeback (as are suede heels which I’m still not convinced of). Black suede is fabulous for evening as the pigment density is darker than leather. That said, it is also higher maintenance. Sueded microfibre is a good alternative; hardier than the real thing and you don’t have to be so precious. WEDGES – Look for wedges with a slightly narrower heel to elongate and slim your calves. Wide wedge heels make legs look chunkier. A lowrise wedge will still give you the elevation while providing maximum comfort for day. KNEE-HIGH FLATS – Derived from riding boots, these are still my go-to style for winter whatever the trend. They make your legs look great, are a dream to wear, and go with almost everything from dresses to skirts, leggings and skinny jeans. My favourite pair of these is the Paula Ryan Napoli boot (far right). It makes your leg look slim and is seriously comfortable to run around all day in.

Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in New Zealand (30 percent of deaths annually) and every ninety minutes a New Zealander dies of heart disease. Many of these deaths are premature and preventable.
T
his sobering reality is one that cannot be ignored, and is the primary focus of Christchurch Heart Group based at St George’s Hospital. Providing shared expertise and sub-specialisation of the eight cardiologists working in a team environment, the practice is unique in the services it can offer and has recently become a Southern Cross Affiliated provider. Cardiovascular risk is normally assessed in the general practice setting. New Zealand guidelines recommend all men from 45 years and women from 55 years should undergo heart risk assessments. Certain ethnicities and people with known cardiovascular risk such as a strong family history of heart disease should undergo regular assessment 10 years earlier. The role of the Christchurch Heart Group is to evaluate, investigate, and treat heart disease. Potential symptoms of heart disease include chest pain (which encompasses discomfort/ tightness/heaviness/squeezing that can also be in the shoulder, arm, jaw); shortness of breath; palpitations (awareness of abnormal heart beat); dizziness; fatigue; and decrease in exercise tolerance. People often mistake heart symptoms as ‘indigestion’ or ‘asthma’. It is important to stress that symptoms may be subtle and any concerns should be discussed with your doctor. Christchurch Heart Group uses the latest technology and equipment to assist with the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. An exercise test is the most widely used diagnostic test for cardiac disease, and is an important and accurate way of assessing how the heart works when placed under a ‘load’. It involves a graduated walk on a treadmill while
being monitored for chest discomfort or shortness of breath and changes on the ECG. A positive result may lead to further investigation with coronary angiography and possibly treatment with angioplasty and stenting. Echocardiography is a non-invasive ultrasound based technique to look at the structure and function of the heart. Movement of the blood can also be detected, which is very useful for looking at heart valves and congenital heart problems, such as holes in the heart. An echo is often performed in people with heart murmurs, shortness of breath, palpitations, chest pain, dizzy spells, ankle swelling, fatigue, fainting attacks, or a family history of heart problems. Echos performed at Christchurch Heart Group are independently reported by cardiologists with sub-specialty training in cardiac imaging. A holter monitor records the heartbeat continuously for 24 to 48 hours. Such prolonged monitoring may enable the cardiologist to correlate the patient’s symptoms with the heart rhythm at the time the symptoms were felt. This correlation is critically important in making a diagnosis in a person complaining of palpitations and dizzy spells. High blood pressure (BP) puts an increased load on the heart, brain, kidneys and other organs. If untreated, it can lead to heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and stroke. High BP usually has no symptoms, so accurate diagnosis by screening is very important. Ambulatory BP monitoring can be very helpful to determine if a person does have genuinely high BP (it is often higher than normal under stressful conditions, such as visiting the doctor - known as ‘white coat hypertension’), or to see how well the BP is controlled by treatment. Cardiologists at Christchurch Heart Group are experts in treatment of cardiac disease including medical therapy and interventional procedures such as coronary stenting, catheter based valve replacement, and closure of holes in the heart, in addition to ablation for heart rhythm abnormalities. It is important to stress that the symptoms of heart disease, which may be subtle, should not be ignored. With an accurate diagnosis and optimal treatment the long-term prognosis of heart disease is very favourable in the vast majority of cases. A signature starter – Miang Kum (roasted coconut, ginger, shallot, lime, peanut, dried shrimp and chilli wrapped in a leaf) – is an absolute explosion of taste in the mouth. You enter the old Malthouse on Colombo Street, home to Canterbury Children’s Theatre (CCT) since 1969, and you smile – it’s much as you remembered it from your teenage years when you attended Neta Neale’s drama classes on a Friday night, back in the late 1970s.
I
n the Green Room, you reminisce with Suzanne Rivers, President of CCT, about Neta, and Suzanne points to a framed photograph; there she is, Neta Neale, MBE (1976) founder of CCT, who purchased the Malthouse in 1965, and four years later, saw her theatre for children open. It has remained open ever since. “What we’ve got here is that thing of ‘Where everybody knows your name.’ It’s like a second home,” says Suzanne. In 1989, to cut overheads on staging shows in bigger theatres, the idea was conceived of Cushion Theatre at the Malthouse. Since its inception, there have been 57 cushion theatre shows (including the just finished “Lost in Oz”).
“It’s a wonderful training ground for young actors,” says Suzanne; theatre greats Elric Hooper (CCT patron) and Ross Gumbley once trod the boards for CCT – as did Matinée idol Michael Hurst. rom 7 to the 8 July, the famous Hanmer Salsa Winter Fest will put on a sizzling Salsa party on the Friday and Saturday nights at the Alpine Hanmer Springs Memorial Hall, with Latin dance daytime workshops for all levels. I’ve been invited back to have dinner again with Jim at Baretta where we will enjoy a range of duck cuisine paired to Cloudy Bay wines. Believe me, I know I’m extremely lucky, but you can partake in the experience before the end of May too by going to one of the participating venues: King of Snake, Baretta, Bloody Mary’s and of course the stunning Mona Vale if you want a true connoisseurs’ food experience. I was under no illusion that my invitation to the George Hotel’s Pescatore Restaurant was going to be an experience. It was the level of the experience that surprised me.
I
’ve got a lot of history with the hotel, but I still feel so special when walking into the Pescatore entrance. Especially when the charming staff are there to greet me with a Nautilus Methode Traditionnelle. The guests were a mix of wine connoisseurs, media, and industry insiders. It was a convivial atmosphere for enjoying some exceptional parings. These wines are limited batches and the stuff of legend. Clive Weston from Yalumba had flown in to give us a well-rounded breakdown on each wine and the reasons for each food pairing - all perfectly prepared by Chef de Cuisine, Ryan Henley. The amuse bouche, a small appetizer which in French literally means “to amuse your mouth”, was salmon on a well-placed Waimakariri pebble. Presentation can be really fun. Cont page 47

Cardamom Honey & Roasted Duck W ith duck season well and truly underway and running through until August, recipes to serve up the spoils of the first few sessions out in the maimai will be in demand. The Villas is currently serving our stand out winter menu dish with date, carrot & walnut Israeli couscous. So if your freezer is full from opening weekend or a friend has more than they can manage, why not give this a try.
Ingredients: 1 Duck cut into sections or 6 duck legs, browned 1/2 cup of orange juice 2 large Onions, finely chopped 2 bay leaves ½ tsp fresh thyme leaves 1 clove garlic 1 tsp ground cardamom 1 tsp ginger 1tsp allspice ½ orange peel, sliced in strips 1 tbs Honey ½ tsp salt ½ tsp ground black pepper ½ cup red wine 1 cup chicken stock Method: Preheat oven to 180°C. Place the duck in a large casserole dish and add all ingredients. Place in pre-heated oven and braise until meat is almost falling off the bone. Remove the bay leaf and skim of the fat. Remove Duck and keep warm. Pour all braising juices into a blender, purée and strain. Season well and thicken with a little cornflour if required. Serve your braised duck with the sauce and your choice of sides.

ur first dish was crab with caramelized corn in brown butter and basil with the Virgilius Viognier 2015. The flavours were outstanding. There we moved on the chamomile cured tuna with cucumber and dill with the 2012 Octavius Old Vine Shiraz. Ryan and Clive explained to us that to go with such a wine you needed something bold and daring. The Octavious was, in my opinion, the best Shiraz to ever cross my lips. Hangi pork with celeriac and sorrel and the Signature Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2013 Shiraz came next. Certainly, the most delicate Hangi I’ve ever had, but I see where the chef was going with this. Getting to try the Yulumba Calay Cabernet Shiraz, before the release on 12 May, was a privilege. Retailing at $395 a bottle, it’s not often I get to try something so rare. Finishing the evening with burnt lemon meringue with brown butter crumble and parsley and the Yalumba Museum Muscat NV was a great way to finish up. You can pick up these wines from Vino Fino if you want to try them individually, but the Pecscatore is a really an experience to be savoured. Always stepping ahead of the competition in style and quality, the Yalumba Fine and Rare Wine dinner was no exception. The wines were incredible, the food sublime, the company wonderful. My first trip to Tokyo was back in 1994 where I discovered the Japanese really can create a good beer.
T
hose were the days well before any importation of foreign beverages. I mean, why would we? We had DB draught back then. There is a distinct difference in a Japanese brew, and when Steinlager Tokyo Dry arrived on my desk, I gave it a sly look out of the corner of my eye and thought ‘Yeah right, mate’. It’s promoted as a “New Zealand lager in the refined style of Japanese beer, which mixes New Zealand ingredients with the tried and true Japanese style of brewing”. A step away from the iconic green bottle (it comes in a silver can), it’s brewed using a traditional Japanese approach to achieve a ‘super-dry’ beer style and has just five ingredients: New Zealand
Pilsner Malt, New Zealand Green Bullet Hops, New Zealand Purified Water, New Zealand Yeast and Rice Extract. The line I was given was, “The extra refreshing lager is a clean and crisp drinking beer with a light dry taste, pale golden colour, and a tight head of white foam”. Truthfully, I was looking for fault, and I can tell you there wasn’t any. These days we have hundreds of beers to choose from, and the bigger breweries are competing with craft brews for the slice of an everexpanding market. To be honest, it’s my favourite presentation from Steinlager and I applaud them. Available in 12 pack bottles (RRP $26.99), it will also be available on tap and in selected bars. It’s certainly worth a crack. You don’t need all the flash TV campaigns to tell you it’s just a bloody good beer.

The hallmarks of this time may have adopted a prescriptive identity embracing the aesthetic of the time, but we value their ability to stand out from the furniture crowd in 2017. From artwork to lighting, the non-conformists put the ‘fun’ in functional. The key to introducing eclecticism is to be bold with your choices throughout your entire home; by introducing ‘odd bods’ here and there, you could end up with a discombobulated visual statement. Additionally, focus is fundamental to a successful result; an accent wall or fireplace can provide a great anchor for a space that’s experimenting with different styles. Eclectic furniture certainly affords leeway and liberty and can be a beautiful equaliser, bringing together unique and contrasting pieces that give you the power to embrace many different profiles and periods. Better yet, it is an energising way to curate a home that is distinctly you.

I’ve recently returned from a break away and I was intrigued by what I thought was a definite shift in behavior when people were shopping or browsing, when I applied an intergenerational framework.
Here we have three essential elements in a transaction process: a purchaser, a supplier and an item for sale, and no-one making it happen. Now I didn’t just see this once, but numerous times, in different cities and across a number of countries (European, not North American), and it’s encouraged me to think deeply about the continued need for genuine connection and communication in sales and any service industry.

I encourage our new consultants to prioritise the person in front of them rather than their phones, which can provide more distractions than leads, and I hope I’m not the only businessperson who does this. We all live in such a fast-paced, multi-faceted world, many of the people we meet as potential sellers or buyers have already done their own research and they need to be impressed with our expertise, care and commitment, not disappointed by it. I love face-to-face work. There’s a magic that happens when a business relationship based on delivering what your client wants and exceeding their expectations occurs. But it’s not even going to start unless we all find a way to make it happen. It’s that, or robots doing the serving as I saw in Berlin – and although our teenage son thought it was cool, I thought otherwise!

Outside there is a cyclone bearing down on Christchurch, but there is warmth in this room that isn’t just coming from the central heating. I’m sitting with Gillian Simpson, Principal of St Margaret’s College, in her office situated in the heart of the rebuilt school campus.
M
rs Simpson is slightly built, but hiding under her jacket must be the shoulders of Atlas, given the sheer weight of her achievements over these post-earthquake years. Today she is in her fourth office and her third home postearthquakes, but despite the difficulties of
those years, the overwhelming feeling is positivity, that this has ultimately been a wonderful opportunity for the school. Mrs Simpson says it has been a personal learning journey which has highlighted the incredible depth of love and loyalty in the community for this school. It is clear that
the new facilities are not solely for the use of the girls enrolled here – far from it. The rebuild process has enabled the school to improve its service to the community, which after all is what the school was founded on 107 years ago. The words ‘community’, ‘partnership’, and ‘sharing’ come up frequently, and are central to the school’s philosophy. The Charles Luney Auditorium, which doubles as the school Chapel, was a great facility for the city when there were very few venues still available. Simpson says

it was a great delight to be able to share it with Christchurch. The Theatre Dance Academy, housed in its new purpose-built studios and performance spaces, is offering a course including two free places to children from low decile schools. The school’s temporary relocatable dance studios, which kept the programme running without a hitch, have left the site and gone for use at Papanui High School. The school has recently partnered with Tait Electronics to give 50 children from decile one and two schools the opportunity to participate in a Robotics Programme at its Centre for Innovation. With characteristic positivity, Mrs Simpson notes that the school was “lucky” that it wasn’t damaged in just one earthquake. The damage was done over the four main earthquake events, meaning they lost buildings gradually over time, “which made life a little easier”. At one point, there were two large marquees functioning as the assembly hall and gymnasium. Mrs Simpson has memories of assemblies with rain water running in rivers under foot, and long winters of PE teachers in puffer coats. However, the memories are tinged with fondness as those tents provided the ability to gather, which helped to keep the school community together in good times and hard times. There have been some particularly challenging times over the process, such as losing the twelve year-old science block in the June 2011 earthquakes. Mrs Simpson says it was a lonely moment, remaining strong and steering the ship, not wanting to share her fears, while feeling devastated. However, while the logistics of demolition and

Mrs Simpson says the drive to look after people built such positive connections. “There have been 2000 construction workers on this site over five years, and quite a few have ended up sending
their girls here.” Intriguingly, Mrs Simpson adds that during those years a record number of St Margaret’s girls went on to study both nursing and engineering. Four old girls have just graduated in engineering with First Class Honours. Mrs Simpson herself has learnt a new vocabulary from this rebuild process and says she has a huge respect for the construction industry. Three building companies and two architectural firms have worked on the rebuild offering huge value. Special mention goes to Mark Prosser, a local builder, who was always there with a “how can I help?” approach. There is another project to come – the Visual Art Creative and Technologies block, but Mrs Simpson says the school feels very settled now and she loves seeing the landscape maturing. The story is not finished though; it is simply entering another chapter. It is important these years are written into the fabric of the school, that future girls know the stories of the “postearthquake” girls, staff, construction workers and community, whose efforts will ensure St Margaret’s College is “educating young women to live and lead” for at least another 107 years.

While New Zealand is on its lonesome way down at the end of the world, our own number eight wire mentality coupled with our adventurous hunter gatherer sense of spirit has seen us spoilt for choice when it comes to finding functional items with a difference for our homes. becoming a focal point in our home.
