Charity cricket for

CYSTIC FIBROSIS

Meet Harry the new poster child for Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand’s iconic Charity Cricket event in Christchurch.

H

aving Cystic Fibrosis isn’t stopping Harry (7) playing sport or cheering on his favourite super rugby team, the Crusaders, as they take on the Rio Olympic All Stars at Christchurch Boys High School on 11 December.

As the poster boy for the 34th CFNZ Charity Cricket event, Harry will be in prime position to watch the Crusaders and the Rio Olympic All Stars in the 20/20 cricket match. Harry and his younger brother and sister

who live in Westmoreland are regular faces at Charity Cricket events. Last year Harry also received a personal introduction to the Crusaders at a training session. “He’d just got out of hospital and he had a bit of a bad patch. He got to talk to Israel Dagg, who is Harry’s favourite player,’ says Harry’s mum, Charlotte Ensor. Although Harry has also been diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes, which can lead to serious complications, he still manages to keep fit by playing cricket and soccer, which helps keep him as healthy as possible. “He knows he’s got cystic fibrosis and his lungs are affected and his tummy’s affected but he probably doesn’t know the nitty gritty stuff yet – just that he’s got to take his meds, have physio and use a nebuliser,” Charlotte explains. The Rio Olympians going into bat for Cystic Fibrosis include bronze medallist Tom Walsh, Rugby 7’s Sam Dickson and 4 x Olympian javelin thrower Stu Farquhar, but Charlotte says Harry will always be a Crusaders’ supporter at heart. “He loves the Crusaders – he thinks they’re pretty amazing.” Charity Cricket – Crusaders vs Rio Olympic All Stars When: 11am – 3pm, 11 December Where: Christchurch Boys High School, Straven Road

t has been designed to purposely evoke the feel of a Country Club - indoor and outdoor dining leads onto a BBQ area and the Russley Green, with a restaurant, café, library and lounge areas all located on the ground floor. Upstairs a billiard room, lounge, craft room, a study complete with computers, salon, therapy rooms and movie theatre can be found. Take a walk through the village and you would never know that construction work has recently been completed. The village has been progressively landscaped and established gardens of specimen

The last of the luxury apartment buildings, the Sefton Apartments, is now well underway, with the majority already pre-sold, and work due to start on Care and Serviced Apartments next year. “Visitors are welcome to come and have a look around - to see what The Russley has to offer,” says Nola. F

ree spirit and nomad Peta Mathias is releasing a new book Never Put All Your Eggs in One Bastard. A hilarious, candid, bitter/sweet ‘memoir of sorts’, it is an ode to cuisine, travel, adventure. As Peta puts it, “This book is my attempt to explore these interwoven elements that, like a refrain in a song, have recurred throughout my life: food, travel and love. It’s not an Eat Pray Love thing – it’s more a pay-the-rent thing and have-adventureswhile-you’re-doing-it thing.” A natural-born risk taker, fiercely independent and shot through with wanderlust, Peta dreamed of a life less ordinary. Not for her, domestic bliss and the burden of a husband. With the world as her stage, Peta embraced new experiences, finding homes in Canada, London, France. Peta Mathias will be touring New Zealand’s four main cities in November, with her new comedy show. Think rapier wit, singing, pithy readings from Never Put All Your Eggs in One Bastard and therapeutic fun as Peta reprises her perennial Agony Aunt guise. You’d be crazy to miss out! A surfboard leans in one corner and the family dog Kirra naps in the other. It is not your typical real estate office, but then in many ways Lance and Juliet Farrant at Ray White Merivale, are not your usual brand of real estate agents.

T

here is the high level of professionalism and motivation to achieve the very best for their clients, and there is also the ability to enjoy each day - to head out for a quick surf or a run around Hagley Park in a lunch break. Lance and Juliet lead the team, their natural style following the tradition of family values that has guided Ray White since it first began in 1902. Lance has a 16 year history in the real estate industry, with the family dynamic extending beyond Juliet’s role as Client Care Manager, to his sister Kirsty, also a licensed salesperson, and daughter Bonnie working behind the scenes. Their office at 174a Papanui Road is a welcoming home-like space that works well as a base for their team and clients. From here

young enthusiasm mixes with seasoned experienced in an environment that is all about supporting each other in order to provide excellent service. The diversity of

the team allows them to find the best for each client, and if this means a salesperson fluent in Mandarin, they have it covered. Look for the bright yellow chimney to find Ray White Merivale at 174a Papanui Road, or give Lance a call on 027 228 2846 and visit www.rwmerivale.co.nz and on Facebook.

Sewing and selling the

NEW ZEALAND 1. What sparked the desire to start your own label? Originally I would say it was my shopping addiction! I would shop all the time. Ten years ago internet shopping wasn’t a big thing, so we had to shop what was on offer in New Zealand and for me there was nothing. I am married to an entrepreneur who isn’t afraid of taking a giant leap or a risk in business, so we decided to start our own clothing label to cater for the gaping hole that was in the market at the time. We started in a recession, when everyone told us it was a terrible time to start a business. Never say never I guess is the moral to that story!

It takes very little research to discover that the founder of Augustine, a hero-worshipped, homegrown brand that has revolutionised the concept of fashion in New Zealand, is a truly likeable personality. So much so, that her brand has almost established a cult following, where Augustine-ites not only embrace the clothing but live and breathe the identity behind it. Metropol talks to founder Kelly Coe about what a day in the life of the fashion deity looks like.

2. You have captivated the imagination and held the attention of women worldwide. We would hazard a guess that this is not just about your clothes but also about the brains behind the clothes - you! How do you decide how much of yourself to share with the public? It’s always a tricky one, to find that balance of sharing enough of myself that my social media is engaging and interesting, and letting ladies resonate with me and the brand, but at the same time keeping parts of my life private. Nathan and I are protective of the older girls and don’t put them on Facebook - I get creative and hide their faces in some way. It’s important to show the kids in my posts - but we don’t want them growing up thinking that they are anymore special or popular than their peers just because they are splashed all over social media. Other than that, I love sharing parts of our lives - my customers need to know that I am just like them, a busy mum living in the burbs, racing through a busy life. 3. The rise of e-commerce is often perceived as a threat to ‘bricks and mortar’ retail environments – thoughts? I don’t agree that it’s a threat; it’s another arm to the business and you will sink without it, but you can have both successfully. Our stockists that are most successful either have online stores or are very active on social media. If you bury your head in the sand and just have a bricks and mortar store, with no web presence at all, then you won’t survive in the long run. I

DREAM would always prefer that our consumer goes into their local store, interacts with the local business owner, builds a real relationship and buys from the store. 4. What does a day in the life of Kelly look like? No two days are the same. Up until six weeks ago when I had Havana, Nathan and I managed the kids on our own; it was a beautiful, busy chaos. We now have a nanny for the first time and that is so helpful. Having a newborn means I am up about three times a night. Then we race around the house getting ready, getting kids fed and changed for school and kindy and Havana set for the day. I do the school drop off then head to work for a few hours at the moment. I was bringing Havana to work with me every day but now I leave her with the nanny for about four hours during the day so she can sleep in her cot rather than my office. At work I can be doing a multitude of things - meetings, planning new season drops, designing next season, checking samples, doing photoshoots etc. I try and work in the shops on launch days that is once a month at the moment as I love to have that interactivity with my customers. If it’s an afternoon where the kids have dancing or swimming I try to be the one that takes them; I don’t like missing out on seeing them do their activities. Once the big girls are in bed Nathan and I sit down and have dinner and a wine and usually talk about what needs to be done in the business. We love going out for dinner with friends so we fit that in as much as possible, but again it’s been a few months as I don’t leave the house at night at the moment.

5. What have been some of your most inspiring milestones on your journey? Every time we open a new shop is very exciting. Opening our first shop in the mount was a huge moment and our opening in Noosa this year was a big jump that was very exciting. I think starting Charlo was another great part of our journey and then we added Stella Royal to the mix so that curvier ladies can also get amongst the sparkle, which has been greatly successful.

“Every day you should get up and get going and hit the ground running. Most importantly you need to be kind, gracious and positive in business.”

6. What is your favourite business philosophy? We are getting a sign made for the office that says, “Get up, Kick Ass, Be Kind, Repeat”, its’ a quote that I have had in a frame for a few years now. I think it says so much without saying much at all. Every day you should get up and get going and hit the ground running. Most importantly you need to be kind, gracious and positive in business. 7. Where to from here? Oh we have so many exciting things coming up in the next year, but most of them I can’t tell you until they happen! We are constantly looking for fresh, new and exciting ways to market our existing brands and develop new ones where we see gaps in the market. We never keep still and live life at 100 miles an hour, you get a lot done at that pace! I love summer for the clothing and how ladies get out and about so much more. We have our high summer collections coming out for all three labels which have some of my all-time favourite styles in them, and we have a summer capsule collection hitting stores just before Christmas.

OWN YOUR

THRONE By Céline Gibson

How often in life are you stumped at the thought of giftbuying for your nearest and dearest? You can spend hours, days, weeks fixating on the problem, yet still end up disappointed at your lack of inspiration and imagination. Then, weary with racking your brain and getting precisely nowhere, you trudge to the shops to fritter your money on something that will, in all probability, end up hidden in the back of a cupboard amongst all the other rejects.

O Buy your beloved the gift of their lifetime, then sit back and accept the adulation that shall be showered upon you.

h dear! But there is good news, Ladies and Gentlemen; help is at hand, and closer than you think! Buy your beloved the gift of their lifetime, then sit back and accept the adulation that shall be showered upon you – you old Clever Clogs! “Darling,” your sweetheart will say, “I can’t believe it! My name – on the back of a seat! In the Isaac Theatre Royal! How did you think of it? The words are perfect – they express everything I stand for! I can never thank you enough!”

It’s a lovely picture, isn’t it? All that praise…and so richly deserved, of course! Now, how did you do it? Well, it was all quite simple really. It went something like this: You headed to your desk, switched on your computer and typed the words Name a Seat – Isaac Theatre Royal into the search engine then followed the instructions. Voila! You poured yourself a glass of bubbly. Really, you’re just too wonderful. Cin Cin!

giant tiny huts,

aspirations

By Céline Gibson

When Sasha Samardziska was a little girl, she told her family she wanted to be a meter-reader when she grew up. “When my mother asked why, I said because I could get inside peoples’ houses and see their rooms – how they looked.” In the end Sasha chose a career in which her desire to create and design could be better fulfilled; she became an architect.

S

asha was born and educated in Frankfurt. She came to Christchurch in June 2015, and found work with an architectural company that ticked all her boxes. “I was excited to be here and watch the rebuild. Though bad things have happened, we were given this near blank canvas to start over. It’s a great opportunity for people working in arts and design.” One such opportunity for Sasha was the Tiny Huts project at New Brighton. “When I read the advert calling for submissions for the Tiny Huts, I thought ‘oh yes!’ This is my time – this is what I was waiting for - my chance to contribute to the community.” Sasha’s Art-omat was one of five winning entries. The title is a play on the German word ‘Automat’ which translates into ‘Vending Machine’. The Art-omat is a metallic box which Sasha describes as strong and radical in design, but softened by the objects on

20 November 17, 2016 Metropol

display. She details a future scenario that best illustrates the Art-omat’s function. “You’re invited to a last minute party, the shops are closed, you’ve no idea what to buy, but you want something special. That is my vision for Art-omats – an art service available day and night.” The concept sounds little short of genius! The four other winning huts are Wharau, designed by Manaia Wilson-Moses; #MyBrightonHut, by Marike Uys; The Turret, by Tessa Forde and Elena LochoreWard, and The Shell Chapel, by Ting Lin. Carolyn Ingles, Urban Design and Regeneration Manager at Christchurch City Council, gave high praise for all those involved with Tiny Huts. “We’ve had so much support from the designers, the build partners, community and many others that have contributed their time, expertise and enthusiasm. The success of community projects is built on the energy of local people; their contributions have been fantastic.” The last word goes back to Sasha. “Design is about creating a space that is also a place; that is everything.” Info: www.ccc.govt.tinyhuts Sasha: asamardz@gmx.de

WHAT A DAY! It was another fabulous day at Addington Raceway and in true Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup Day style; the sun came out to adorn more than 22,000 racegoers who enjoyed one of Canterbury’s biggest sporting and social events on the calendar. 99-year-old Neil Harton was Addington’s VIP guest for the 113th running of the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup. Neil got to tick a return to Cup Day off his bucket list and delivered the Cup in style - a 1917 Dodge, which cruised down the track. Crowds formed around the Social Media Flower Wall, with racegoers enjoying all four sides this year, including the glamorous Christchurch Casino showgirls. Even Addington’s celebrity guest, Stan Walker made an appearance at the wall before singing the national anthem – A Cappella style, which had the crowds in awe. Entrants in the Westfield Riccarton Style Stakes showed their fashion flair, watched closely by judges Luke Bettesworth, Laura McGoldrick, and Sophie

A LOVE STORY

By Céline Gibson

Barbara Brookman’s parents met on the stage of the “old” Theatre Royal when both were cast members in a Christchurch Operatic Society musical called The Belle of New York. By the time the show closed its run, the couple were an item.

“I

t’s definitely where I got my love of theatre,” says the petite and vivacious Barbara, “It’s in the blood!” Growing up in a family passionate about showbusiness, naturally, it wasn’t long before Barbara caught the bug. She recalls her own first Isaac appearance. “It was 1971, and the production was Camelot – it was fantastic!” Barbara’s love affair with her favourite theatre saw her taking on a very active role in 2009 when she became an usher. The February 2011 earthquake saw her having time out, but when the theatre reopened on 17 November, 2014, Barbara, along with other staff were asked if they would like to go back. Barbara didn’t need to be asked twice. She was soon promoted to head usher, and in April 2015 took on

Barbara says she is a spiritual person, and had a wonderful experience when Isaac staff came together on a working bee, preparing for their move back into the theatre. “We were unpacking the containers and came across this box full of old programmes and photographs. Some of the photographs were of Mum’s work as Wardrobe Mistress for the Christchurch Gilbert and Sullivan Society, and amongst

administrative assistant duties as well. “What I love about my job are the people – the people I work for, and the people I work with. I love ushering - working in the front line, welcoming patrons and making sure their theatre experience is the best possible. On the admin side, we aren’t working as individuals – we work together. We have a great team!” When the word retirement is mentioned, Barbara laughs, “What’s that?” She readily admits a reluctance to leave her beloved theatre. “Working there keeps me young at heart; it feeds my soul.” Barbara says she still gets goose bumps every time she walks through Isaac’s doors. “I truly love my job - putting on my uniform and representing the theatre. It’s a privilege to work there.”

them was a photo of me in one of her creations for a show that I was in! That was a sign – I knew this was where I was always meant to be.” In her admin role, one of Barbara’s assignments is the overseeing of the Name a Seat Campaign. For every plaque bought, not only does a patron have their name on the back of a seat, but more importantly, they have the

knowledge that their purchase enables the upkeep of the Isaac for generations to come. “My children have bought me a plaque,” Barbara confesses, reaching into her purse to bring out a slip of paper. “These are the words to be inscribed on it.” - Musical Theatre – Her Passion, Her Love, Her World. SWAN LAKE:

CYGNUS DIVINUS! By Céline Gibson

There is no denying that the music of Swan Lake, composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky during 1875-1876, has to be one of the most captivating scores ever written for ballet. It is sweeping, seductive, heartrending and majestic. Definitely, it is unforgettable.

I

f you missed seeing the St Petersburg Ballet Company in their last tour of fifteen years ago, now is your chance to pop on your ‘best bib and tucker’, and experience one of the most enchanting nights of your life! St Petersburg Ballet was founded in 1994 by Russian entrepreneur Konstantin Tachkin whose vision was to showcase classical Russian ballet by delivering stunning productions to global audiences. With sell-out seasons across six continents, Konstantin can certainly take a bow. His company is so in demand, they are often booked for 200-250 performances a year. That takes a lot of discipline and a load of dedication. The story of Swan Lake is the classic fairy tale romance: handsome Prince Siegfried meets beautiful Swan Princess Odette and is immediately smitten. But lurking in the background, plotting dastardly deeds to thwart our star-crossed lovers, is the evil sorcerer Rothbart. Andrew Guild, international tour producer of Swan Lake, describes it as the real thing. “It’s Russian ballet on a grand scale. If you see only one ballet in your life, let it be this.” Swan Lake performs from December 29 – 31, culminating in a once-in-a-lifetime exclusive and divine after-show event to ring in the New Year with the esteemed Russian dancers in the Gloucester Room at the historic Isaac Theatre Royal! The majestic nature of the Isaac Theatre Royal (ITR)warrants no justification – the infinite beauty of the multi-faceted environment speaks for itself.

t is the hidden treasures that lie within that provoke greater curiosity with the cultural icon representing the ultimate gift that keeps on giving. Beyond its many virtues – extoled throughout this wider supplement – the ITR has other generous offerings above and beyond that which greets the public at a glance. The Royal Boxes add a special dimension to a night out with the possibility of using the space for pre-show and interval hosting. Adding to the already generous offering, the auditorium theatre stage, Ravenscar Dress Circle Foyer, Grand Circle Foyer and Royal Boxes are also available for hire with premium food options for cocktail celebrations and VIP dining experiences.

The eclectic yet equally elegant Gloucester Room space also rises to the occasion with its purpose built environment for functions and events. Able to accommodate 102-120 seated, the fringe performance space has already wooed audiences with its charismatic charm with more in store for 2017. The Phantom of the Opera April 2015 Photographer Danielle Colvin

The Isaac Theatre Royal’s (ITR) all year round series of events and performances could easily be described as the crème de la crème. Multi-award winning and world-class acts find a fitting home at the theatre, renowned and respected for its state-of-the-art performance spaces.

I

n 2016, the contribution the space has singularly made to entertaining and enriching the lives of locals and visitors alike is nothing short of astonishing. Reminiscing about the year to date, some of the incredible standouts – too many to mention – include Hairspray, following the sell-out success of Mamma Mia, with the musical epic Evita stealing the show in September and October. The New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF) lit up the big screen at the theatre this year with Poi E garnering rave reviews following its debut. Heading towards the silly season, the ITR’s bustling calendar shows no sign of breaking pace with an entertaining schedule right up until Christmas. KEEPING CHRISTCHURCH ON ITS TOES

Ballet has talismanic qualities – capable of taking its audience to new heights. Each performance is a masterpiece, visualising narratives in new and boundary pushing ways.

RNZB dancer Abigail Boyle, photograph by Ross Brown

T

he Isaac Theatre Royal (ITR) has been right at the heart of bringing ballet to the Garden City with the Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB) opening its 2017 season in Christchurch for the first time in living memory! Cantabrians will have the opportunity to experience two emotive performances by French master-choreographer, Roland Petit (1924-2011). The landmark works of 20th century dance - L’Arlésienne and Carmen, never performed in New Zealand, will grace the stage at the ITR from 16-18 February. Intense drama combines with inspiring technique to deliver this programme of two iconic works by Petit. L’Arlésienne is set during high summer in Provence. On his wedding day, a young man is captivated, then obsessed, by an unknown, unseen woman – the ‘girl from Arles’. Consumed by his vision, he abandons his bride, losing his reason and ultimately, his life. Bizet’s opera Carmen, based on a novella by Prosper Mérimée, was first performed in Paris in 1875. The opera’s lurid story, and especially its working class setting, created a scandal, but Carmen has gone on to become one of the most popular works in the operatic canon, inspiring works in other genres, from musicals to notable ballets. Who is Carmen? Temptress, free spirit, victim or villain, she lives and loves on her own terms. Whatever claims a man may make on her body, her heart and her mind are her own. L’Arlésienne and Carmen are staged with permission of the Roland Petit Trust. For more information, visit www.rnzb.org.nz

WHA WH AT’S ON BARS & CAFES WHA WHAT’S NEW ART RET RETAIL DOWNTOWN

NATURAL BORN STORYTELLERS Sometimes the most memorable stories, those that are carried by winds all over the world, have found notoriety thanks to their unusual circumstances. Certainly storytelling is an age old practice that has transcended time and generation.

P

erhaps you have a story born from comical misfortune or a tale of woe that materialised following an embarrassing faux pas. Either way, you’ll find an excellent forum for divulging your catastrophic moments at the upcoming Natural Born Storytellers evening at XCHC (Wilson Road) on Friday 25 November. The concept found its feet once upon a time in the hip locale of Camden Town, London. The original pioneers have since collaborated with The Story Collective to hand the microphone to Christchurch. The brief for the evening comes from the team themselves: “We are looking for your stories about times when things didn’t go accordingly to plan. Life throws curve balls sometimes and we have to go with the flow. The results can be challenging and even catastrophic – but they can always be unexpectedly wonderful”. Reach out to the organisers in advance at thestorycollectivechch@gmail.com to help find your story a voice. The team will be happy to help you craft your anecdote. If you don’t feel like sharing, then you’re welcome to delight in the dramatics and wile away the evening wondering if you’re listening to extraordinary fact or clever fiction.

THE CLASSIC TEE TRANSFORMED:

By Majka Kaiser

The basic summer wardrobe staple, the classic tee, is the obvious partner with denim, but with these fashion styling tips you can get more mileage out of this capsule classic.

I

f you have the waistline, then tucking in a crisp white t-shirt into your favourite skirt takes you from casual to chic in an instant. Make sure the t-shirt is fitted and that the skirt nips in at the waist for the perfect silhouette. Team your t-shirt and skirt combo with a pair of killer heels for a night out or wedges for a more laidback look. If your t-shirt is plain then your skirt can afford to be daring in colour and pattern. While a more formal skirt can dress up a classic tee, you’ll also get more wear out of that one-off Trelise Cooper skirt you’ve only worn once at a wedding by dressing it down with a t-shirt. Just about any outfit can transcend the everyday grind to something a little extra special with the addition of carefully selected accessories. Don’t be afraid to mix bold, brassy necklaces, bangles and rings otherwise saved for special occasions, to inject a healthy dose of glitz into your daytime ensemble.

Think metallic, big jewels, beads, and anything with tassels. Give your classic tee a boost of character by scouring op shops and flea markets for one-of-a-kind vintage silk scarves, jewellery, or a statement clutch. Stand out from the crowd with a unique piece that can also make a great talking point at parties. Even simply slipping a blazer over a classic tee tucked into a pair of slim-fit jeans can instantly elevate your look from boring to brilliant. This is a great look for the office where you needn’t sacrifice style for comfort. Team this ensemble with a pair of flirty peep-toe heels, strappy sandals, or a hip pair of brogues for the seriously smart. After dark, really let loose and go all out with sequined jackets. Keep your eyes peeled for sassy blazers that dare to dazzle. With so much sparkle on top you can easily team this look with a fitting pair of jeans, leatherette pants or a pencil skirt, depending on your mood. Workshop Denim

A beautiful

GAME CHANGER

Leading Christchurch beauty clinic All About You has revolutionised the beauty business with an exciting and unique game changer. Introducing the VIP Beauty Club – a convenient, flexible and affordable way to take care of all your beauty needs.

C

lients can choose from three different levels of membership – Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire – which are made up of a selection of the best beauty treatments on offer. Each month, members select a range of treatments from the menu, all for an easy, one-off monthly payment. “The best part is, all the treatments are interchangeable each month, so you can pick the treatment you want, when you want it,” says owner Tracy Cox, who introduced the new system to make life easier for her clients. “Although we are a traditional salon with great prices for individual treatments, I’ve been listening to what my clients want and decided to offer them a unique option to

meet their needs. The VIP Beauty Club is an excellent way to offer both value for money and convenience – rather than go to multiple clinics for different treatments, we can take care of all your beauty needs.” Other incentives include up to 15% off other treatments and 10% off retail products. “No other membership in the country gives you this flexibility or value – this is a fantastic deal that’s not to be missed!” All About You offers two locations with easy access – one in the tranquil setting of Cashmere, and the second clinic is situated in the heart of Riccarton, by Westfield Mall. SUNKISSED PARADISE It was the disruptive start-up that burst onto the sunless tanning scene five years ago and today it is ‘the’ success story of the industry.

Y

es, Sun Kissed Tan (SKT), a now trans-Tasman identity, has firmly cemented its leading role in the delivery of wholesale and retail sunless tanning, offering a product and service that is second to none. Its Be Gorgeous tanning range is the only New Zealand brand of its kind to be exported globally. By the end of January, SKT will have four retail salons in New Zealand and a fifth in Australia. Owners Matt and Diana Docherty have greater ambitions for growth and expansion around the world, and want New Zealanders to come on the journey with the business. “We intend to raise capital through crowdfunding platform www.pledgeme.co.nz so we can move into new foreign markets. After five years in business we are profitable, sound and have great potential for diversification. The model is very unique and it is completely feasible for us to set our sights on somewhere like America.” SKT wants to reward its customers’ loyalty by enabling them to invest through Pledge Me with share parcels starting at just $500. “We believe this investment opportunity will appeal to first time investors and the more business savvy investors.” To attend an information evening about the possibilities, please continue to visit the SKT Facebook page for details.

“We are very proud to be the first clinic in New Zealand to celebrate the birth of a baby with the assistance of our new PGS technology,” says Dr Sarah Wakeman, Medical Director of Fertility Associates Christchurch.

What is PGS? ‘Preimplantation Genetic Screening’(PGS) is a powerful embryo selection technique that detects embryos that have the wrong number of chromosomes or ‘aneuploidy’. Embryos with aneuploidy do not give rise to pregnancy, are associated with pregnancy loss, or occasionally with an affected child (eg Down’s Syndrome). Who can benefit? • Women aged 36 and over. • Women who have had recurrent miscarriages. • Women who have not become pregnant despite the transfer of several embryos. “I would totally recommend it,” says happy mum Libby. “The great thing about PGS

Know your risk – is Genetic Carrier Screening for you? Genetic Carrier Screening is a simple saliva test, for three common recessive genes – Cystic Fibrosis (CF), Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and Fragile X Syndrome (FXS). • People who carry one copy of the CF or SMA genes are perfectly normal. When both parents carry one of these genes, there is a 25% chance that each child will have the disease. For women who carry FXS, there is 50% chance that children will have the disease. When to do the test? • Ideally screening is done before conception. If the woman carries one of these genes, then her partner is tested. • Genetic screening is useful for all people considering starting their family. It is not only for those undertaking fertility treatments. Worried about your fertility? Dr Sarah Wakeman, Fertility Specialist at Fertility Associates is holding a free fertility information event for anyone experiencing difficulty getting pregnant or wanting to know more about fertility. Find out about fertility issues, lifestyle factors, basic tests, treatment options, support, funding and more. Date: Wednesday 23 November, 6pm, Fertility Associates Christchurch. CONNECTING INSPIRATION &

INK Stocking Advent Calenders

These days it’s more common to have a tattoo than not, and as societal norms make it acceptable for even the most clean cut people to be inked up, more and more are getting tattoos and piercings.

N

Z Ink Tattoo Studio in Rangiora is owned by Tattoo Artist Steve Purtle. Steve has been tattooing for 16 years and is incredibly talented at what he does, regardless of whether you’d like a new tattoo designed by him or an old one covered. Alongside him is his partner Trudi, who is not only in charge of customer service and the day-to-day running of the studio, but also heads the body piercing side of the business. Together they make a formidable team, ensuring their clients have the best tattoo or piercing experience possible. Both Steve and Trudi believe that a consultation is important for the custom design part of the tattoo process. This service is free, as is the design itself. This allows not only the client to see an aspect of the tattoo drawn on the skin but also allows Steve to accurately quote on the finished piece and, in turn, then work within their budget. Body piercing has become Trudi’s forte. Only surgical stainless steel jewellery is used, along with needles, not guns. At $20 per piercing, including jewellery, this is very affordable. NZ Ink also sells gift vouchers. In the lead up to Christmas this is the perfect gift for that ‘hard to buy for’ person. Contact Steve or Trudi through NZ Ink Tattoo Studio’s Facebook Page via private message any time or phone 03 310 6669 in business hours.

gastronomy Homemade

Topp Stop Café in Amberley now has more scrumptious offerings and owner Zoe Topp is not slowing down. After a year in business and recently sampling the café trends of Europe, her creative take on Kiwi comfort food just keeps getting tastier.

N

ew to the fresh homemade selection are pies using free-run local pork and beef, processed by Harris Meats in Cheviot. The roast pork and apple pie now has crunchy crackling baked into the pastry top. Her favourite creation: “It’s different, but so delicious - a nacho pie with a spicy beef and bean filling with cheese, a of dollop sour-cream in the centre and corn chips on the pastry top.” With six staff to help the local 24-yearold entrepreneur, she cooks and runs the café, with help from “a wonderful head chef who’s very consistent with quality”. Proving popular is the gluten-free menu available all day with a range of a la carte breakfast and lunch meals, homemade pies and sweet slices. Watch this space for vegan options coming soon!

You'll treasure the treasures at Welcome to our shop full of beautiful Village Green Antiques treasures from days gone by, complemented by a fine range of gift & Giftware ware, greeting cards and stationery.

Underground’s Avante Garde coffee blend is perfected by professional baristas, and being dairy-free herself, Zoe offers alternatives like almond and soymilk. A coffee and muffin $6 deal includes flavours like berry and white chocolate and peach with cream cheese. The large commercial kitchen also offers a catering service to suit events of any size, delivering Topp Stop Café’s homemade gastronomy directly to offices and functions. Zoe’s focus is a family friendly and affordable café. “Just having contented customers and great compliments makes the long hours all worth it,” she says. Topp Stop Café, 47 Carters Road, Amberley opens 6.30am-5pm Monday to Thursday remaining open until 7.30pm on Friday. Weekend hours are 8.30am to 5pm.

E OTIC TANG AN

Secret, Rangiora’s new Vietnamese and Japanese restaurant, is an exciting dining adventure in a magnificently restored building.

N

ow that Kiwi taste buds are ready for Vietnamese fare, Hung Lam first found the perfect location. Then inspired by the historic facades and contemporary interiors of London’s Oxford Street, he enlisted architect Marcus Stufkens to create a functional but artistic space in the original Junction Hotel. Vietnamese cuisine is piquant rather than spicy, with traditional lemongrass, mint and coriander imparting an exotic tang. “It complements the fresh flavours of Japanese cuisine - they are quite similar,” says Hung, who’s originally from Ha Tien, Vietnam. Now offering the first sushi train in Rangiora; moving plates tempt with Japanese and Vietnamese delicacies – a convenient, entertaining way to dine. “We were lucky to find our head chef, Thong Ngygen, a tutor at a top Ho Chi Minh City cooking school. He uses only fresh locally sourced produce, herbs and spices.” Some evening menu creations include juicy black tiger prawns with crispy

secret-recipe rice, Nam Vang - pork and seafood with noodles or the green papaya salad. Huge bowls of Vietnamese noodle soup and Japanese rice dishes are perfect for brunch or lunch and there’s fresh sushi to take away. “Sushi-making is an art, taking years to perfect,” says Hung, whose Christchurch Sushi Ya restaurants also keep gaining popularity. At the end of the spacious restaurant is a bar, which also surprises with

oriental cocktails and quieter seating, ideal for corporate meetings. Discover Secret, 112 High Street, Rangiora. Sushi Ya (sushi takeaway) opens 7 days 7.30am-4.30pm. Sushi Train opens Thursday to Sunday lunchtime 11am-2.30pm and then 5pm9pm. Vietnamese Restaurant opens Tuesday-Sunday 5pm until late.

The transformer dress is the hottest trend to hit the aisle in 2016 and with good reason: two-for-one styles mean you can showcase different looks for the ceremony and reception without having to purchase a second dress.

away? With more brides than ever before calling for after-wedding party frocks, designers have responded with an ever-increasing collection of transformer wedding gowns with convertible styles that use removable skirts, trains and capes to create a distinct reception look. While there’s nothing more magical than the silhouette created by a beautiful full gown, those things can get heavy after anything more than a trip down the aisle. But with a transformer dress, you can remove the full, heavy skirt after the ceremony and photos and you’ve got a comfortable – but still glam – reception dress that you’re able to purchase all at once. Also known as an infinity dress, or convertible dress, this versatile gown makes a great option for bridesmaids too, enabling each of the lovely ladies to showcase their own style preferences, while maintaining the same colour and material.

By Melinda Collins

I’ve been building houses since I was five. While building back then involved squeezing colourful little Lego pieces together until they snapped into place, a lot of time and dedication went into those mini developments.

A

nd if you thought I wasn’t setting myself up for life when I was stacking those blocks together, you’d be quite wrong. Lego has been credited with developing lateral thinking, teaching children to think in three dimensions, developing problem-solving, organisation and planning abilities, developing creativity, enhancing communication and critical thinking, and boosting children’s motor development, while working with instructions improves literacy. If you don’t relish the thought of clogging up the vacuum cleaner with little colourful blocks, some clever cookies came up with the concept of offering Lego and Duplo pits for children to play to their heart’s content.

Imagination Station first opened its doors in the Cathedral Junction in January 2015 as a six-month project after some creative ideas started flowing between the Lego Users’ Group, LUG4/2, and the Christchurch City Council. The Imagination Station is still run by LUG4/2, the incorporated society and registered charity behind The Christchurch Brick Show. Run by volunteers, it is free of charge, but donations are greatly appreciated. So why not check them out? After all, according to children’s education expert Sir Ken Robinson – of ‘Do schools kill creativity?’ TED talk fame – ‘imagination is the source of all human achievement’.

RECIPES FOOD WINE BARS & CAFÉS RESTAURANTS

ARE SUPERFOODS REALLY WORTH THE

HOOPLA? By Melinda Collins

Whether it’s a shot of fresh wheatgrass, a handful of historic goji berries or a glass of rich acai berry juice, superfoods have been touted as a modern miracle meal, with the power to cure cancer, reduce ageing and promote weight loss.

A

lthough defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as “a nutrientrich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and wellbeing”, the term “superfood” has no scientifically agreed meaning. Yet today it is used to assign near-magical powers to overpriced, exotic foodstuffs. Foods that are commonly referred to as ‘super’ include foods with high amounts of antioxidants, such as broccoli and berries or those rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as mackerel. However, there are also many new and unusual products such as goji berries bursting onto the market with huge health claims and a price tag to match. Scientifically, the evidence that gives rise to superfood status is generally not

representative of a natural diet. Garlic’s reputation for reducing cholesterol and blood pressure is based on laboratory testing where doses are equivalent of up to 28 cloves per day, which one would be hard-pressed to consume. The top 10 superfoods, according to WebMD, include salmon, eggs, berries, nuts, beans, sweet potatoes and broccoli. Nothing exotic here — just age-old, commonsense, steeped in ancient wisdom, told to children by their mothers since the beginning of time: eat your veggies. So do we really need goji berries, quinoa

or some other exotic ingredient from a faraway land to be healthy? Not according to most nutritionists. There is however, one ingredient which, when incorporated into a healthy diet and lifestyle, can reap benefits – variety. Variety helps ensure we are getting the nutrients we need for health and wellness. It is a powerful, effective ally in our fight to hold onto our health.

OF HISTORY

In a 128 year history, three years is a mere blink in time. Hulbert House, a boutique hotel, has been carefully restored over the past three years and brings the essence of this history to its luxury accommodation.

R

ecently added to the collection of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Hulbert House is one of the original residences of Queenstown. The incredible interior design of Hulbert house was completed by designer Neil McLachlan. Under his hand each of the six suites has an authentic feel that combines contemporary comfort – beautiful fabrics and wall coverings, plush bedding and of course, free WiFi. Suites offer views out across Lake Wakatipu, into their private gardens and up to Skyline Hill, with a little touch of Christchurch in the coffee beans from Black & White Coffee Cartel ready for a fresh brew in every room. Each stay includes a sumptuous breakfast with a focus on homemade and locally grown

produce. Some of this comes straight from their own garden, or from nearby farms and orchards, with the cycle completed through their worm farm and composting system. Freshly baked snacks are available throughout the day, as are pre-dinner drinks and canapes before a short walk into town for dinner at one of Queenstown’s restaurants. Courtesy transport is available on request to and from the town centre. You will find more of Neil McLachlan’s interior design at The George and in the penthouse of Hotel Montreal in Christchurch, both managed by Brook Serene, with Regent of Rotorua their North Island destination. Its name has a double meaning. You expect to hear the clink of glasses in a restaurant, but perhaps the other meaning of “clink” – the slang work for a prison – might not spring immediately to mind. But that is without knowing the background of Clink Restaurant and Bar in Sumner because the historic part of this building was once a place of incarceration. Now it houses a delightfully cosy and intimate bar where Canterbury craft beers and wines flow and seasonal cocktails are created with flair and pizzazz.

cured salmon gravalax, along with firm favourite duck liver parfait - a dish that diners forbid the restaurant to take off. The small plates are designed for sharing and on a summer’s day there is no better place to do this than in the sunny sheltered courtyard. Nooks and different spaces within the restaurant itself make it ideal for groups and parties. With live music twice a month on Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons as well as art exhibitions, Clink really is a destination in and of itself – a place where people want to meet up and socialise. Bakermans festive fare

R FESTIVE

FARE No wonder customers eyes light up like Christmas trees when they step inside Bakermans of Fendalton.

eminiscent of the patisseries of Europe, the shelves are laden with sweet and savory fresh on-site baking, presented as exquisitely as it tastes. After decades in the business, it’s the first year Peter and Yvonne Bakermans can showcase their festive fare at their new larger location. It’s a mouth-watering sight. These holiday traditions include Banketstaaf - a Dutch delicacy of moist ground almonds encased in flaky pastry, gingerbread angels and Santas for the children and Peter’s favourite English

traditions; fruit mince pies, chocolate rum truffles, white Christmas slice, and a decadent Christmas cake. If baking is a science, then their shortbread formula is melt-in-your-mouth perfection – they fly out the door, as do other homemade packets of baking. The friendly customer-service focused couple has always used Nelson’s Pomeroy coffee. Superbly made and presented, it offers something different for connoisseurs, as does the ‘t Leaf T’ range in silken tea bags. Also open on Sundays, Bakermans provides an opportunity to relax, slow down and savour both flavours and company, either at the tables inside or the sheltered outdoor area – or pick up a picnic lunch. “Even when times are tough, everyone can afford a coffee and a treat – it always makes you feel better,” Yvonne says. As it’s conveniently located en route to the airport, her holiday tip is to buy something like one of the delicious dagwood sandwiches, and eat like a King on the flight! Bakermans of Fendalton, 19-23 Memorial Ave, opens weekdays 7.30am to 5pm and Weekends 8am to 4pm.

It was on an overcast, busy day - nothing out of the ordinary - that I first experienced Happening Bar & Kitchen on Gloucester Street – definitely extraordinary.

ike any great experience, there wasn’t one distinguishing factor alone that transported me away from a rather mundane day to a first class dining experience. There were many elements; from an intimate setting and bespoke décor, to an internationally qualified chef and owner, and world class eats and tipples. Opulent, yet not ostentatious, the space boasts sophisticated acoustics, handcrafted tables that are a perfect fit when joined together for larger parties, gold fire sprinklers, chandeliers from the East and one-of-a-kind craft beer barrels (taps) – one of many chic features. Upon entry I am warmly greeted by the owner Radeeshan Munasinghe (BugZ). Having trained in Singapore and then in Switzerland, he is one of the rare few to have completed a prestigious hospitality and entrepreneurship degree. Originally from Sri Lanka, BugZ’s initial foray into the industry was in Singapore

am thrilled to see an ‘open window’ kitchen so I can see the Chef working his magic as he brings their culinary innovations to life. One thing immediately strikes me about the service – it is very attentive, but I am given a lot of space to dine in peace with gentle jazz music playing in the background. I enjoy exquisite pork belly – so tender it breaks apart with a spoon. I let hot butter cuttlefish with ‘happening sauce’ (one of a kind in the world) melt in my mouth. I devour succulent, tiger prawns and fresh Akaroa salmon along with buttermilk chicken that is perfection on the plate. All the while I delight in the unique sauces in front of me. I look over at the fully stocked bar – all New Zealand’s best of its class craft beers, a distinctive New Zealand wine collection, along with premium whisky, gins and vodka brands. Fresh, fulsome fare, sourced locally that day, is the secret here and the Chef tells me, with sincerity, he spends his days off going to visit where the ingredients are sourced to ensure that the product is at its optimum quality standard - the key to success. Located at very close proximity to the Isaac Theatre royal, with live music on the weekend, Happening Bar & Kitchen is a mature environment for enjoyment – one that Christchurch deserves: an international standard dining experience right here in Central Christchurch.

THE HAPPENING BAR AND KITCHEN Classy restaurant with a European influenced menu, locally sourced wines and award winning craft beers and live music performances. Centrally located just a few doors away from Isaac Theatre Royal 165 Gloucester Street, Christchurch

Stout Cake with Spicy Chocolate Sauce By The Villas

SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR

THE HERITAGE

A hospitality icon and important pioneer in the Garden City’s regeneration has been recognised in the World Luxury Hotel Awards in the Luxury Historical Hotel category.

H

eritage Christchurch was named the top historical hotel in the entire region of Australasia and Oceania in these prestigious awards, often likened to the Oscars for luxury properties world-wide. The award ceremony took place in Qatar on 29 October. “It’s an amazing achievement for our hotel to have received this international recognition. We are very proud of the Heritage Christchurch team,” says Gary Jarvis Group Operations Manager of Heritage and CityLife Hotels New Zealand. Set in the 103-year-old Old Government Building (OGB) on Christchurch’s Cathedral Square, Heritage Christchurch has been in hot demand for leisure guests and business travellers since its formal re-opening in 2013. The building was opened in 1913 and is designed by renowned architect Joseph Clarkson Maddison in an Italian Renaissance Palazzo style and is considered of ‘monumental’ importance to the city by architecture experts. The hotel’s Maddison’s restaurant is named in his honour. Also on site is the popular OGB Bar and Café.

Ingredients – makes 1 x 9” Cake For the cake • 1½ cups stout or dark beer (Guinness works well but you can experiment with different porters & stouts) • 1½ cups unsalted butter • 1 cup dark cocoa powder • 3 cups plain flour • 3 cups sugar • 2 ¼ tsp baking powder • 1 teaspoons salt • 3 large eggs • 2/3 cup sour cream For the sauce • 2 cup dark chocolate, chopped • 2 cup heavy cream • 3 tablespoons butter • 2½ teaspoons cayenne powder Method Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease & flour a 9” cake pan & line with baking paper. (Also makes 25 – 30 standard cupcakes. See below) In a large, heavy saucepan add the stout & butter & heat until the butter melts. Remove from heat & add cocoa powder. Whisk

until smooth, set aside, cool to room temperature. In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder & salt until smooth. Set aside. Beat together eggs & sour cream in large bowl. Add the stout-cocoa mixture, mixing to combine. Add flour mixture & mix together at slow speed. Scrape the sides & bottom of the bowl, & continue to mix for 1 more minute. Pour batter into cake pan and bake for 45 to 50 minutes for 9” pan, (18 -22 minutes for cupcakes), until a cake tester inserted into the centre comes out clean. Remove from oven, cool on a rack for 5 minutes and serve warm with your choice of chocolate sauce or try the spicy chocolate sauce above. Combine the ingredients in a glass bowl double boiler on a low heat, stir frequently to melt & combine ingredients. Serve with fresh cream or ice cream of your choice.

E N I S I CU HES S U THIS R C SUMMER There’s lots to celebrate when it comes to summer, and, let’s be honest, without sounding gluttonous, a lot of it is to do with nibbles and tipples.

H

ere’s our lowdown on what’s to love most about this season’s culinary offering as we get into the groove of the social season.

1. Sweet treats: Soda Press Co’s Award Winning Natural Soda Syrups are a must for the picnic basket or BBQ parties this summer. Our personal favourite is the Indian Tonic and Raspberry & Mint syrup, which is a natural, low sugar alternative for delicious homemade sodas and cocktails. Made in Hei Hei, Christchurch, Soda Press Co syrups are handcrafted from all natural ingredients, of which a minimum 80 percent are organic, with just a touch of organic rice malt syrup added during the small batch, slow flavour extraction process. What’s not to love?

2.

The golden ticket: As if we needed any more of an excuse to indulge with some Moët & Chandon bubbles over the summer, the luxury brand and its equally elegant partner Baretta have upped the ante. To kick off the season of festivity in style, Moët & Chandon, Baretta and Empire are offering diners the chance to win the ultimate escape for two to Fiji. During November and December 2016, guests to Baretta and Empire can be in to win a range of instant prizes, including being in to win a luxurious holiday with return flights from Christchurch to Fiji for two people and 3-nights in a beautiful beachside villa on Vomo Island. Simply purchase a flute or bottle of Moët & Chandon Impérial, Impérial Rosé or Ice Impérial at Baretta or Empire between Tuesday 1 November and Saturday 31 December 2016 to receive a Moët & Chandon golden bubble containing a prize ticket for a one in five instant prize.

3. Ice, ice baby: Zoku’s slow melting, set of three king-sized geometric shaped ice molds will perfect your mixologist skills. The Geo Ice Set includes three ice molds that are easy to remove by simply pulling the silicone apart—no rinsing required! Add your choice of ice to any beverage and it will melt at a slow, even rate. This refined set makes the perfect addition to any drink, with the ice fitting in an average sized rocks glass or a double old-fashioned glass. Available from Ballantynes.

own-to-earth and almost primitive style ceramics are very much in vogue. Pottery has enjoyed a long and illustrious history with clay providing the material for its earliest forms some 27,000 years ago. It seems today’s artisans are paying homage to their ancestral counterparts, adopting a very natural looking approach to their work. That said, a very polished aesthetic is also taking front and centre stage with tableware also channeling a refined look, with a buttery texture to the touch and

pastel colours pleasing the eye. The key to utilising ceramics during your soirees is to ensure you treat them with the TLC stipulated by the maker. For the more laid back occasions in your life, introduce an array of practical pleasures – like matching sets including cups and teapot. Downtime doesn’t have to mean drab when it comes to the sets in your cupboards so splurge on finding your individual pieces some company – the pieces don’t even need to be identical – you can find other common denominators between pieces when matching that isn’t just about colour – you might like to opt for comparable textures, patterns or shapes. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you could even handcraft your own and create a collection from scratch. There are a number of schools and places you can go to fire up your own designs!

contemplative quality thanks to its palette of neutral hues and clever use of varying textures, such as marble floors. A broad entryway is dramatically bathed in light from a circular skylight overhead. The front doors swing open to reveal a vast cantilevered slab of American oak that almost seems to float and which provides a division between the three main areas of the house: the living area, dining room and the kitchen and pantry. The windows in the living area were enlarged to reveal the full glory of the vertical gardens that are perfect for a small plot, and provide a vibrant tapestry of lush greens interspersed with the odd pop of colour in the form of tropical flowers. While the large gallery windows flood the room with natural light all day long, the wooden screening that covers the façade offers privacy. Huge glass doors provide access to the garden and wooden deck alongside the infinity pool, and a slatted pergola casts welcome shade onto the outdoor dining area, which uses the same slatted wood screening at the front of the house to provide continuity.

in European looks into New Zealand homes. The tile trends which emerged at this year’s Cersaie covered a range of looks and feels, all of which are firm favourites from Naturally Tiles order-in and instore lines. Wood-look tiles continue to be a favoured choice. Italian’s lead the way with digital technology resulting in tiles now almost unrecognisable from the real thing in terms of a wood grain look and feel. A wood-look that has a weathered and reclaimed appearance works well for interior designs to create a range of aesthetics such as Oriental, barn conversion or New York loft, with Old Wood and Urban Wood by Fioranese a perfect choice. Concrete-look is another trend which is continuing to be a leader over the coming seasons. The style has evolved since its first release from a pure concrete industrial feel to the exposed aggregate look that is now available. This is taken a step further in Stone One by Marca Corona, with a stunning contemporary mix of what appears to be concrete and stone. Also making a resurgence is the marled look, a softer marble-look, ideal to lighten and brighten any space. Top design tips from expert Jenny include mixing marble ceramics and woods, such as one of the instore favourites, Calacatta by Edilgres.

TRACKING DOWN BEAUTIFUL ACCENTS It’s very busy at Off the Track Curtains on Westminster Street. The first thing you sense as you walk through the door of the 100-year-old wooden character house - a feature of this shopping area - is a productive buzz.

ustomers talk with staff about fabrics and the soft whirr of sewing machines permeates the air. A family-run business founded by owners Rab and Annabel Blair; Off the Track will celebrate 25 years in operation early next year. The feeling is still one of a traditional draper’s shop with welcoming and personalised service from staff members Linda, Jan and Kaylene. At Off the Track there is a great selection of quality second-hand curtains and Roman blinds. Buying recycled curtains is a very cost-effective way of completing a new look to a re-furbished room, especially when they can be given a new lease of life with stylish tracks, rails and fittings. Off the Track makes new curtains too. Beautiful fabrics are displayed in colour-coordinated racks in the showroom for new made-to-measure drapes, cushions and squabs that Sandra and Liz will sew in the on-site workroom. There is a wonderful quiet space at the rear of the business full of fabric samples where customers can browse to their heart’s content or call on help and advice if they need it from Off the Track’s knowledgeable and very experienced staff. Off the Track is located at 106 Westminster Street, St Albans. Its opening hours are 10am – 6pm Monday to Friday and 10am – 1pm on Saturdays. Come in on a Monday and you will get to meet Paddy, the Welsh Cardigan Corgi. A NEW

ERA In business, the only constant is change – be that organic or planned. The former just ‘happens’ however the latter demands vision and ambition – something Quoin Structural Consultants has in abundance.

T

en years in partnership was the catalyst for structural engineers, Gary Haverland and Brett Gilmore, to re-evaluate what would be in the best long-term interest of their business and their clients. The result was a new brand and a strategic focus on harnessing the core competencies and expertise for which their business is renowned. Collectively, Brett and Gary have 50+ years structural engineering design experience and, along with their team, have built a reputation for providing clients with appropriate and innovative solutions. Unquestionably, they have brought highly valuable thinking around seismic technology to the rebuild environment of Canterbury. Recent projects include the much admired, state-of-the-art, ECan building. The five storey, 8000 square metre base isolated office is a statement to seismic resilience through the application of innovative thinking to engineering design,

materials and construction. The atrium which runs the full height of the building, is not only a visual stand-out but a design engineering feat. Multi-apartment developments, Wigram Skies Town Centre, and The Hub, all carry Quoin’s name; as does the Nazareth House development. Quoin is also heavily involved in the repair and strengthening of a number of significant buildings within the city and the structural design of many architecturally designed houses. “No two projects are the same. Each is approached with a fresh slate,” Gilmore says. “Continual collaboration with clients, architects, building contractors and consultants is key to delivering the right solution for a successful outcome.” “This industry is about relationships. Over the past 10 years we have built very strong relationships across the sector, working tirelessly to earn the trust of our clients,” adds Haverland.

LOVE Y O U R NEIGHBOUR! LYNETTE MCFADDEN

BUSINESS OWNER, HARCOURTS GOLD AND WELL KNOWN BUSINESSWOMAN

Recently I took the opportunity to go through an open home of a neighbouring property; in fact, from that property you can look directly into ours. The home in question was stunning, both spacious and beautifully presented. The consultants hosting the open home were absolute professionals and although the words ‘nosy’ and ‘neighbour’ never came up, in less polished hands, they may have. And that’s the little bee in my bonnet, so to speak. Real estate consultants and owners will often categorise neighbours viewing their homes as ‘sticky-beaks’, or worse, and it’s something I frequently challenge. Yes, for some folk it will absolutely be an exercise they go through for purposes other than making a purchase, but for others – and I’ve been in this camp many times – it can mean a potential sale. It makes sense that neighbours buy next-door properties;

they buy for themselves, for family members and on behalf of friends keen to get into a specific area or school zone. They believe in the location and its merits, and can at times pay a premium for the privilege. So, all is not lost if you see lists of locals on your open home attendance sheets. Accept it as just another part of the selling process. Breathe deeply and move on. Here’s another ‘B’ or two: BE Persistent and BE Sensible. In a transitional market, and that’s what I believe our current market is, as demonstrated by the incredible number of properties that are currently available (others refer to it as stock, a word I hate), versus a selective number of purchasers, many of whom won’t be rushed. Choice brings its own set of challenges, especially for owners. It’s time to be sensible with price expectations if you sit outside the market’s

‘sweet spot’, which can adjust almost weekly, or if your suburb is over-supplied, and there are several pockets where this is the case. So whilst I’m advocating an optimistic yet realistic stance for owners, my message to sales consultants is one of persistence. Showing persistence is such a gutsy stance and all of us like to feel that the person working for us has done absolutely everything they possibly can to bring about the desired result. These actions should include a written marketing plan across multiple media, a structured open day schedule, data base contact, auction or private treaty, and then successful negotiation. The list is extensive and the work ethic needed is strong. And let’s not forget that professional approach when dealing with neighbours; after all, you never know, they just might purchase.

DESIGN, BUILD, MAINTAIN One thing that inspires Ross Marriott is seeing his clients happy and his staff happy in the work they’re producing.

“T

here’s nothing more rewarding than seeing someone’s backyard being transformed into their dream space. Implementing this is physical work and requires a high level of dedication and organisation behind the scenes.” he says. “You’re working to a timeframe, then subject to the forces of nature. Weather can have a huge impact and historical surprises under the ground and suppliers can complicate any situation. Luckily, with our expertise we strive to find solutions at all times.” Artworks prides itself on being able to deliver the “whole package” - from design to build to the maintenance of a property. Its three project managers have all worked out in the field before moving into project management. “It’s great having that wealth of knowledge - they fully understand the work, the Canterbury environment and the process it takes to complete the finished product. They liaise with our clients, and are totally connected with guiding the teams on the ground,” Ross says. The plan starts with Braydon Narbey - the Landscape Architect. He too has

spent two years working in the crews, before moving into his specialised field of landscape architecture enabling him to fully understand the process when delivering a plan. After a consult with Braydon, the plan is then drafted. These range from a standard layout through to elaborate 3D walkthroughs. Once signed off this is handed over for the project manager to quote. Simplified – once the quote is accepted, the build can then take place. Ongoing maintenance is then an option for any client led by Brian Westerbeeek, the highly qualified Horticulturist. Artworks has been building outdoor spaces for 29 years now and is passionate about what it does and what it delivers. The logical link for your “complete landscaping service”.

ETHICAL

HOMEWARE Motivated by Buddhist principles, Kabchis Homewares is a treasure trove of handcrafted goods from India, sourced ethically from talented artisans.

“F

ollowing the law of Karma, it’s about earning a living in an ethical manner without harming others,” says owner Madhu Sameer. “There are many people around the world who create products which are sold for hundreds of dollars, but the craftsmen are paid only $2 or $3 dollars. So, it was my intention to provide a market for arts and crafts that are handmade and underappreciated.” Madhu purchases the goods directly from her trusted network of suppliers in India, many of whom she grew up with. For every product sold, 10% of profits are also donated back to the craftspeople. The unique products, most of which are exclusive to the store, include embroidered table runners, cushion covers and clothes, marble jewellery boxes, chess sets and exquisitely carved trivets and table tops inlaid with semi-precious stones. Moroccan lamps, bone inlay furniture, beautiful Buddhas, floor lamps, spotlight lamps, extra-large vases, and willow basketry are also on offer.
