Meet Harry the new poster child for Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand’s iconic Charity Cricket event in Christchurch.
H
aving Cystic Fibrosis isn’t stopping Harry (7) playing sport or cheering on his favourite super rugby team, the Crusaders, as they take on the Rio Olympic All Stars at Christchurch Boys High School on 11 December.
As the poster boy for the 34th CFNZ Charity Cricket event, Harry will be in prime position to watch the Crusaders and the Rio Olympic All Stars in the 20/20 cricket match. Harry and his younger brother and sister
who live in Westmoreland are regular faces at Charity Cricket events. Last year Harry also received a personal introduction to the Crusaders at a training session. “He’d just got out of hospital and he had a bit of a bad patch. He got to talk to Israel Dagg, who is Harry’s favourite player,’ says Harry’s mum, Charlotte Ensor. Although Harry has also been diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes, which can lead to serious complications, he still manages to keep fit by playing cricket and soccer, which helps keep him as healthy as possible. “He knows he’s got cystic fibrosis and his lungs are affected and his tummy’s affected but he probably doesn’t know the nitty gritty stuff yet – just that he’s got to take his meds, have physio and use a nebuliser,” Charlotte explains. The Rio Olympians going into bat for Cystic Fibrosis include bronze medallist Tom Walsh, Rugby 7’s Sam Dickson and 4 x Olympian javelin thrower Stu Farquhar, but Charlotte says Harry will always be a Crusaders’ supporter at heart. “He loves the Crusaders – he thinks they’re pretty amazing.” Charity Cricket – Crusaders vs Rio Olympic All Stars When: 11am – 3pm, 11 December Where: Christchurch Boys High School, Straven Road

Charity cabaret an annual highlight

aven’t organised your Christmas work do – or would like to show your appreciation to clients and raise funds for a wonderful charity? The Charity Hospital Christmas Cabaret will have a stellar cast for its cabaretthemed entertainment, divine catering by the very generous Nicky from Verve, stunning décor and and a sleigh full of wonderful auction prizes. It costs the Canterbury Charity Hospital Trust $750,000 a year to provide free surgery, medical treatments, dentistry and counselling to Cantabrians in need. The Trust is currently developing a new oral surgery at its Harewood Road site to cater to an increased need for more complicated procedures including wisdom teeth extractions. The Charity Hospital Christmas Cabaret is being held on Friday 2 December at Maugers Innovation Park in Templeton. mixed media works exploring different subjects including architectural features, historic images and romantic impressions. “On the other hand Patterson Parkin was born in London and immigrated to New Zealand in 1967. His work explores a diverse range of subjects and this new exhibition focuses on musicians and the way in which music and colour evoke an emotional response.” Following the Kim/Parkin exhibition the Bryce Gallery will stage its well-known summer collection leading up to Christmas with works by all the gallery’s artists. “We will have pieces available for under $1,000. Sewing and selling the
NEW ZEALAND 1. What sparked the desire to start your own label? Originally I would say it was my shopping addiction! I would shop all the time. Ten years ago internet shopping wasn’t a big thing, so we had to shop what was on offer in New Zealand and for me there was nothing. I am married to an entrepreneur who isn’t afraid of taking a giant leap or a risk in business, so we decided to start our own clothing label to cater for the gaping hole that was in the market at the time. We started in a recession, when everyone told us it was a terrible time to start a business. Never say never I guess is the moral to that story!
It takes very little research to discover that the founder of Augustine, a hero-worshipped, homegrown brand that has revolutionised the concept of fashion in New Zealand, is a truly likeable personality. So much so, that her brand has almost established a cult following, where Augustine-ites not only embrace the clothing but live and breathe the identity behind it. Metropol talks to founder Kelly Coe about what a day in the life of the fashion deity looks like.
2. You have captivated the imagination and held the attention of women worldwide. We would hazard a guess that this is not just about your clothes but also about the brains behind the clothes - you! How do you decide how much of yourself to share with the public? It’s always a tricky one, to find that balance of sharing enough of myself that my social media is engaging and interesting, and letting ladies resonate with me and the brand, but at the same time keeping parts of my life private. Nathan and I are protective of the older girls and don’t put them on Facebook - I get creative and hide their faces in some way. It’s important to show the kids in my posts - but we don’t want them growing up thinking that they are anymore special or popular than their peers just because they are splashed all over social media. Other than that, I love sharing parts of our lives - my customers need to know that I am just like them, a busy mum living in the burbs, racing through a busy life. 3. The rise of e-commerce is often perceived as a threat to ‘bricks and mortar’ retail environments – thoughts? I don’t agree that it’s a threat; it’s another arm to the business and you will sink without it, but you can have both successfully. Our stockists that are most successful either have online stores or are very active on social media. What does a day in the life of Kelly look like? No two days are the same. Up until six weeks ago when I had Havana, Nathan and I managed the kids on our own; it was a beautiful, busy chaos. We now have a nanny for the first time and that is so helpful. Having a newborn means I am up about three times a night. Then we race around the house getting ready, getting kids fed and changed for school and kindy and Havana set for the day. I do the school drop off then head to work for a few hours at the moment. I was bringing Havana to work with me every day but now I leave her with the nanny for about four hours during the day so she can sleep in her cot rather than my office. At work I can be doing a multitude of things - meetings, planning new season drops, designing next season, checking samples, doing photoshoots etc. I try and work in the shops on launch days that is once a month at the moment as I love to have that interactivity with my customers. If it’s an afternoon where the kids have dancing or swimming I try to be the one that takes them; I don’t like missing out on seeing them do their activities. Once the big girls are in bed Nathan and I sit down and have dinner and a wine and usually talk about what needs to be done in the business. We love going out for dinner with friends so we fit that in as much as possible, but again it’s been a few months as I don’t leave the house at night at the moment.
5. What have been some of your most inspiring milestones on your journey? Every time we open a new shop is very exciting. Opening our first shop in the mount was a huge moment and our opening in Noosa this year was a big jump that was very exciting. I think starting Charlo was another great part of our journey and then we added Stella Royal to the mix so that curvier ladies can also get amongst the sparkle, which has been greatly successful.

6. What is your favourite business philosophy? We are getting a sign made for the office that says, “Get up, Kick Ass, Be Kind, Repeat”, its’ a quote that I have had in a frame for a few years now. I think it says so much without saying much at all. Every day you should get up and get going and hit the ground running. Most importantly you need to be kind, gracious and positive in business. 7. Where to from here? Oh we have so many exciting things coming up in the next year, but most of them I can’t tell you until they happen! We are constantly looking for fresh, new and exciting ways to market our existing brands and develop new ones where we see gaps in the market. We never keep still and live life at 100 miles an hour, you get a lot done at that pace! I love summer for the clothing and how ladies get out and about so much more. We have our high summer collections coming out for all three labels which have some of my all-time favourite styles in them, and we have a summer capsule collection hitting stores just before Christmas.

When Sasha Samardziska was a little girl, she told her family she wanted to be a meter-reader when she grew up. “When my mother asked why, I said because I could get inside peoples’ houses and see their rooms – how they looked.” In the end Sasha chose a career in which her desire to create and design could be better fulfilled; she became an architect.
S
asha was born and educated in Frankfurt. She came to Christchurch in June 2015, and found work with an architectural company that ticked all her boxes. “I was excited to be here and watch the rebuild. Though bad things have happened, we were given this near blank canvas to start over. It’s a great opportunity for people working in arts and design.” One such opportunity for Sasha was the Tiny Huts project at New Brighton. “When I read the advert calling for submissions for the Tiny Huts, I thought ‘oh yes!’ This is my time – this is what I was waiting for - my chance to contribute to the community.” Sasha’s Art-omat was one of five winning entries. The title is a play on the German word ‘Automat’ which translates into ‘Vending Machine’. The Art-omat is a metallic box which Sasha describes as strong and radical in design, but softened by the objects on

display. She details a future scenario that best illustrates the Art-omat’s function. “You’re invited to a last minute party, the shops are closed, you’ve no idea what to buy, but you want something special. That is my vision for Art-omats – an art service available day and night.” The concept sounds little short of genius! The four other winning huts are Wharau, designed by Manaia Wilson-Moses; #MyBrightonHut, by Marike Uys; The Turret, by Tessa Forde and Elena LochoreWard, and The Shell Chapel, by Ting Lin. Carolyn Ingles, Urban Design and Regeneration Manager at Christchurch City Council, gave high praise for all those involved with Tiny Huts. “We’ve had so much support from the designers, the build partners, community and many others that have contributed their time, expertise and enthusiasm. WHAT A DAY! It was another fabulous day at Addington Raceway and in true Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup Day style; the sun came out to adorn more than 22,000 racegoers who enjoyed one of Canterbury’s biggest sporting and social events on the calendar. 99-year-old Neil Harton was Addington’s VIP guest for the 113th running of the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup. Neil got to tick a return to Cup Day off his bucket list and delivered the Cup in style - a 1917 Dodge, which cruised down the track. Crowds formed around the Social Media Flower Wall, with racegoers enjoying all four sides this year, including the glamorous Christchurch Casino showgirls. Even Addington’s celebrity guest, Stan Walker made an appearance at the wall before singing the national anthem – A Cappella style, which had the crowds in awe. Entrants in the Westfield Riccarton Style Stakes showed their fashion flair, watched closely by judges Luke Bettesworth, Laura McGoldrick, and Sophie

A LOVE STORY

Barbara Brookman’s parents met on the stage of the “old” Theatre Royal when both were cast members in a Christchurch Operatic Society musical called The Belle of New York. By the time the show closed its run, the couple were an item.
“I
t’s definitely where I got my love of theatre,” says the petite and vivacious Barbara, “It’s in the blood!” Growing up in a family passionate about showbusiness, naturally, it wasn’t long before Barbara caught the bug. She recalls her own first Isaac appearance. “It was 1971, and the production was Camelot – it was fantastic!” Barbara’s love affair with her favourite theatre saw her taking on a very active role in 2009 when she became an usher. The February 2011 earthquake saw her having time out, but when the theatre reopened on 17 November, 2014, Barbara, along with other staff were asked if they would like to go back. Barbara didn’t need to be asked twice. She was soon promoted to head usher, and in April 2015 took on
Barbara says she is a spiritual person, and had a wonderful experience when Isaac staff came together on a working bee, preparing for their move back into the theatre. “We were unpacking the containers and came across this box full of old programmes and photographs. Some of the photographs were of Mum’s work as Wardrobe Mistress for the Christchurch Gilbert and Sullivan Society, and amongst
administrative assistant duties as well. “What I love about my job are the people – the people I work for, and the people I work with. I love ushering - working in the front line, welcoming patrons and making sure their theatre experience is the best possible. On the admin side, we aren’t working as individuals – we work together. We have a great team!” When the word retirement is mentioned, Barbara laughs, “What’s that?” She readily admits a reluctance to leave her beloved theatre. “Working there keeps me young at heart; it feeds my soul.” Barbara says she still gets goose bumps every time she walks through Isaac’s doors. “I truly love my job - putting on my uniform and representing the theatre. It’s a privilege to work there.”

For every plaque bought, not only does a patron have their name on the back of a seat, but more importantly, they have the

nybody who was a fan of the Fawlty Towers television series will have their favourite episode, their favourite scene and their favourite line. One scene that endeared itself to many was where Basil, enraged by his ‘misbehaving’ car, goes berserk and takes to it with a tree branch. This very same scene
opportunity to see their rude, obnoxious hotel proprietor once again, along with Sybil, his “nest of vipers” wife; hapless, hopeless Manuel; and pretty Polly, maid and problem solver. Cleese has taken three episodes from the series – the Hotel Inspectors, The Germans, and Communication Problems - and skilfully

he Isaac Theatre Royal (ITR) has been right at the heart of bringing ballet to the Garden City with the Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB) opening its 2017 season in Christchurch for the first time in living memory! Cantabrians will have the opportunity to experience two emotive performances by French master-choreographer, Roland Petit (1924-2011). The landmark works of 20th century dance - L’Arlésienne and Carmen, never performed in New Zealand, will grace the stage at the ITR from 16-18 February. Intense drama combines with inspiring technique to deliver this programme of two iconic works by Petit. L’Arlésienne is set during high summer in Provence. On his wedding day, a young man is captivated, then obsessed, by an unknown, unseen woman – the ‘girl from Arles’. Consumed by his vision, he abandons his bride, losing his reason and ultimately, his life. Bizet’s opera Carmen, based on a novella by Prosper Mérimée, was first performed in Paris in 1875. The opera’s lurid story, and especially its working class setting, created a scandal, but Carmen has gone on to become one of the most popular works in the operatic canon, inspiring works in other genres, from musicals to notable ballets. Who is Carmen? Temptress, free spirit, victim or villain, she lives and loves on her own terms. Whatever claims a man may make on her body, her heart and her mind are her own. The concept found its feet once upon a time in the hip locale of Camden Town, London. The original pioneers have since collaborated with The Story Collective to hand the microphone to Christchurch. The brief for the evening comes from the team themselves: “We are looking for your stories about times when things didn’t go accordingly to plan. Life throws curve balls sometimes and we have to go with the flow. The results can be challenging and even catastrophic – but they can always be unexpectedly wonderful”. What is PGS? ‘Preimplantation Genetic Screening’(PGS) is a powerful embryo selection technique that detects embryos that have the wrong number of chromosomes or ‘aneuploidy’. Embryos with aneuploidy do not give rise to pregnancy, are associated with pregnancy loss, or occasionally with an affected child (eg Down’s Syndrome). Secret, Rangiora’s new Vietnamese and Japanese restaurant, is an exciting dining adventure in a magnificently restored building.

ow that Kiwi taste buds are ready for Vietnamese fare, Hung Lam first found the perfect location. Then inspired by the historic facades and contemporary interiors of London’s Oxford Street, he enlisted architect Marcus Stufkens to create a functional but artistic space in the original Junction Hotel. Vietnamese cuisine is piquant rather than spicy, with traditional lemongrass, mint and coriander imparting an exotic tang. “It complements the fresh flavours of Japanese cuisine - they are quite similar,” says Hung, who’s originally from Ha Tien, Vietnam. Now offering the first sushi train in Rangiora; moving plates tempt with Japanese and Vietnamese delicacies – a convenient, entertaining way to dine. “We were lucky to find our head chef, Thong Ngygen, a tutor at a top Ho Chi Minh City cooking school. He uses only fresh locally sourced produce, herbs and spices.” Some evening menu creations include juicy black tiger prawns with crispy
secret-recipe rice, Nam Vang - pork and seafood with noodles or the green papaya salad. Hanmer Four Square Half Marathon is being held in the township in early May 2017. One of the most scenic half marathons in New Zealand, there are men’s, women’s, veteran men’s and veteran women’s grades with a 5 and 10km option both available for walkers to participate. I’ve been building houses since I was five. While building back then involved squeezing colourful little Lego pieces together until they snapped into place, a lot of time and dedication went into those mini developments.
A
nd if you thought I wasn’t setting myself up for life when I was stacking those blocks together, you’d be quite wrong. Lego has been credited with developing lateral thinking, teaching children to think in three dimensions, developing problem-solving, organisation and planning abilities, developing creativity, enhancing communication and critical thinking, and boosting children’s motor development, while working with instructions improves literacy. If you don’t relish the thought of clogging up the vacuum cleaner with little colourful blocks, some clever cookies came up with the concept of offering Lego and Duplo pits for children to play to their heart’s content.
Imagination Station first opened its doors in the Cathedral Junction in January 2015 as a six-month project after some creative ideas started flowing between the Lego Users’ Group, LUG4/2, and the Christchurch City Council. The Imagination Station is still run by LUG4/2, the incorporated society and registered charity behind The Christchurch Brick Show. Run by volunteers, it is free of charge, but donations are greatly appreciated. So why not check them out? After all, according to children’s education expert Sir Ken Robinson – of ‘Do schools kill creativity?’ TED talk fame – ‘imagination is the source of all human achievement’.

ARE SUPERFOODS REALLY WORTH THE

Whether it’s a shot of fresh wheatgrass, a handful of historic goji berries or a glass of rich acai berry juice, superfoods have been touted as a modern miracle meal, with the power to cure cancer, reduce ageing and promote weight loss.
A
lthough defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as “a nutrientrich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and wellbeing”, the term “superfood” has no scientifically agreed meaning. Yet today it is used to assign near-magical powers to overpriced, exotic foodstuffs. Foods that are commonly referred to as ‘super’ include foods with high amounts of antioxidants, such as broccoli and berries or those rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as mackerel. However, there are also many new and unusual products such as goji berries bursting onto the market with huge health claims and a price tag to match. Scientifically, the evidence that gives rise to superfood status is generally not
representative of a natural diet. Garlic’s reputation for reducing cholesterol and blood pressure is based on laboratory testing where doses are equivalent of up to 28 cloves per day, which one would be hard-pressed to consume. The top 10 superfoods, according to WebMD, include salmon, eggs, berries, nuts, beans, sweet potatoes and broccoli. Nothing exotic here — just age-old, commonsense, steeped in ancient wisdom, told to children by their mothers since the beginning of time: eat your veggies. So do we really need goji berries, quinoa
or some other exotic ingredient from a faraway land to be healthy? Not according to most nutritionists. There is however, one ingredient which, when incorporated into a healthy diet and lifestyle, can reap benefits – variety. Variety helps ensure we are getting the nutrients we need for health and wellness. It is a powerful, effective ally in our fight to hold onto our health.

As it’s conveniently located en route to the airport, her holiday tip is to buy something like one of the delicious dagwood sandwiches, and eat like a King on the flight! It was on an overcast, busy day - nothing out of the ordinary - that I first experienced Happening Bar & Kitchen on Gloucester Street – definitely extraordinary.
L
ike any great experience, there wasn’t one distinguishing factor alone that transported me away from a rather mundane day to a first class dining experience. There were many elements; from an intimate setting and bespoke décor, to an internationally qualified chef and owner, and world class eats and tipples. Opulent, yet not ostentatious, the space boasts sophisticated acoustics, handcrafted tables that are a perfect fit when joined together for larger parties, gold fire sprinklers, chandeliers from the East and one-of-a-kind craft beer barrels (taps) – one of many chic features. Upon entry I am warmly greeted by the owner Radeeshan Munasinghe (BugZ). Having trained in Singapore and then in Switzerland, he is one of the rare few to have completed a prestigious hospitality and entrepreneurship degree. Originally from Sri Lanka, BugZ’s initial foray into the industry was in Singapore
am thrilled to see an ‘open window’ kitchen so I can see the Chef working his magic as he brings their culinary innovations to life. One thing immediately strikes me about the service – it is very attentive, but I am given a lot of space to dine in peace with gentle jazz music playing in the background. I enjoy exquisite pork belly – so tender it breaks apart with a spoon. I let hot butter cuttlefish with ‘happening sauce’ (one of a kind in the world) melt in my mouth. I devour succulent, tiger prawns and fresh Akaroa salmon along with buttermilk chicken that is perfection on the plate. All the while I delight in the unique sauces in front of me. I look over at the fully stocked bar – all New Zealand’s best of its class craft beers, a distinctive New Zealand wine collection, along with premium whisky, gins and vodka brands. Fresh, fulsome fare, sourced locally that day, is the secret here and the Chef tells me, with sincerity, he spends his days off going to visit where the ingredients are sourced to ensure that the product is at its optimum quality standard - the key to success. Located at very close proximity to the Isaac Theatre royal, with live music on the weekend, Happening Bar & Kitchen is a mature environment for enjoyment – one that Christchurch deserves: an international standard dining experience right here in Central Christchurch.

A hospitality icon and important pioneer in the Garden City’s regeneration has been recognised in the World Luxury Hotel Awards in the Luxury Historical Hotel category.
H
eritage Christchurch was named the top historical hotel in the entire region of Australasia and Oceania in these prestigious awards, often likened to the Oscars for luxury properties world-wide. The award ceremony took place in Qatar on 29 October. “It’s an amazing achievement for our hotel to have received this international recognition. We are very proud of the Heritage Christchurch team,” says Gary Jarvis Group Operations Manager of Heritage and CityLife Hotels New Zealand. Set in the 103-year-old Old Government Building (OGB) on Christchurch’s Cathedral Square, Heritage Christchurch has been in hot demand for leisure guests and business travellers since its formal re-opening in 2013. The building was opened in 1913 and is designed by renowned architect Joseph Clarkson Maddison in an Italian Renaissance Palazzo style and is considered of ‘monumental’ importance to the city by architecture experts. The hotel’s Maddison’s restaurant is named in his honour. Also on site is the popular OGB Bar and Café.
Ingredients – makes 1 x 9” Cake For the cake • 1½ cups stout or dark beer (Guinness works well but you can experiment with different porters & stouts) • 1½ cups unsalted butter • 1 cup dark cocoa powder • 3 cups plain flour • 3 cups sugar • 2 ¼ tsp baking powder • 1 teaspoons salt • 3 large eggs • 2/3 cup sour cream For the sauce • 2 cup dark chocolate, chopped • 2 cup heavy cream • 3 tablespoons butter • 2½ teaspoons cayenne powder Method Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease & flour a 9” cake pan & line with baking paper. (Also makes 25 – 30 standard cupcakes. See below) In a large, heavy saucepan add the stout & butter & heat until the butter melts. Remove from heat & add cocoa powder. Whisk
until smooth, set aside, cool to room temperature. In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder & salt until smooth. Set aside. Beat together eggs & sour cream in large bowl. Add the stout-cocoa mixture, mixing to combine. Add flour mixture & mix together at slow speed. Scrape the sides & bottom of the bowl, & continue to mix for 1 more minute. Pour batter into cake pan and bake for 45 to 50 minutes for 9” pan, (18 -22 minutes for cupcakes), until a cake tester inserted into the centre comes out clean. Remove from oven, cool on a rack for 5 minutes and serve warm with your choice of chocolate sauce or try the spicy chocolate sauce above. Combine the ingredients in a glass bowl double boiler on a low heat, stir frequently to melt & combine ingredients. Serve with fresh cream or ice cream of your choice.

In a 2L container add cream, milk and vanilla sugar. With scissors, split vanilla pods in half. Scrape out the seeds, and then add seeds and pods into the cream mixture. Whisk well, tightly cover and refrigerate for 12 hours or overnight.
50 Bean Vanilla Ice Cream In a 2L stainless pot, bring vanilla infusion to a boil, turn heat off and let it infuse for 1 hour. Prepare ice bath. Grab thermometer and whisk. Over a medium heat, return the vanilla infusion to a boil, then turn off heat. In a medium bowl, whisk together the yolks and white sugar. Whisking constantly, ladle ¼ of the steaming vanilla infusion into the yolks. Yolks are now tempered. It seems today’s artisans are paying homage to their ancestral counterparts, adopting a very natural looking approach to their work. That said, a very polished aesthetic is also taking front and centre stage with tableware also channeling a refined look, with a buttery texture to the touch and
pastel colours pleasing the eye. The key to utilising ceramics during your soirees is to ensure you treat them with the TLC stipulated by the maker. For the more laid back occasions in your life, introduce an array of practical pleasures – like matching sets including cups and teapot. Downtime doesn’t have to mean drab when it comes to the sets in your cupboards so splurge on finding your individual pieces some company – the pieces don’t even need to be identical – you can find other common denominators between pieces when matching that isn’t just about colour – you might like to opt for comparable textures, patterns or shapes. Exploiting the surrounding lush vegetation, a number of homes featured celebrate this close connection with nature, which is clearly at the very heart of the Brazilian lifestyle. After a long search for a smaller house to meet their changing needs now their grown children had flown the coup, the owners’ of this 1970’s São Paulo home finally decided to remodel their existing abode. The architect’s brief was to transform the house into a stylish contemporary home that reflected their new lifestyle, which they declare, fits them like a glove. The house has a restful,

he homes featured in a new book, Bold & Bright, display all the vibrant personality of the region with their use of exuberant colour, design and pattern. With an appreciation for pieces with soul, vintage furniture plays a starring role in Brazilian interiors, as well as modern pieces made from reclaimed or sustainably grown wood. contemplative quality thanks to its palette of neutral hues and clever use of varying textures, such as marble floors. A broad entryway is dramatically bathed in light from a circular skylight overhead. The front doors swing open to reveal a vast cantilevered slab of American oak that almost seems to float and which provides a division between the three main areas of the house: the living area, dining room and the kitchen and pantry. The windows in the living area were enlarged to reveal the full glory of the vertical gardens that are perfect for a small plot, and provide a vibrant tapestry of lush greens interspersed with the odd pop of colour in the form of tropical flowers. While the large gallery windows flood the room with natural light all day long, the wooden screening that covers the façade offers privacy. Huge glass doors provide access to the garden and wooden deck alongside the infinity pool, and a slatted pergola casts welcome shade onto the outdoor dining area, which uses the same slatted wood screening at the front of the house to provide continuity.

Recently I took the opportunity to go through an open home of a neighbouring property; in fact, from that property you can look directly into ours. The home in question was stunning, both spacious and beautifully presented. The consultants hosting the open home were absolute professionals and although the words ‘nosy’ and ‘neighbour’ never came up, in less polished hands, they may have. And that’s the little bee in my bonnet, so to speak. Real estate consultants and owners will often categorise neighbours viewing their homes as ‘sticky-beaks’, or worse, and it’s something I frequently challenge. Yes, for some folk it will absolutely be an exercise they go through for purposes other than making a purchase, but for others – and I’ve been in this camp many times – it can mean a potential sale. It makes sense that neighbours buy next-door properties;
they buy for themselves, for family members and on behalf of friends keen to get into a specific area or school zone. They believe in the location and its merits, and can at times pay a premium for the privilege. So, all is not lost if you see lists of locals on your open home attendance sheets. Accept it as just another part of the selling process. Breathe deeply and move on. Here’s another ‘B’ or two: BE Persistent and BE Sensible. In a transitional market, and that’s what I believe our current market is, as demonstrated by the incredible number of properties that are currently available (others refer to it as stock, a word I hate), versus a selective number of purchasers, many of whom won’t be rushed. Choice brings its own set of challenges, especially for owners. It’s time to be sensible with price expectations if you sit outside the market’s
‘sweet spot’, which can adjust almost weekly, or if your suburb is over-supplied, and there are several pockets where this is the case. So whilst I’m advocating an optimistic yet realistic stance for owners, my message to sales consultants is one of persistence. Showing persistence is such a gutsy stance and all of us like to feel that the person working for us has done absolutely everything they possibly can to bring about the desired result. These actions should include a written marketing plan across multiple media, a structured open day schedule, data base contact, auction or private treaty, and then successful negotiation. The list is extensive and the work ethic needed is strong. And let’s not forget that professional approach when dealing with neighbours; after all, you never know, they just might purchase.
