his year Metropol has taken an avid and just interest in all it has to offer, with its role as educator and innovator, all the more valuable following the earthquakes. We have had the great fortune to showcase a number of the arts adorning its grandiose walls. We have covered all manner of genres from abstract to fine art. Today’s issue presents an opportunity to celebrate Colin McCahon’s From the Sun Deck: McCahon’s Titirangi. McCahon is one of New Zealand’s indisputable artistic geniuses. Recognised as New Zealand’s foremost painter, his reputation keeps company with the likes of modernist pioneers Rita Angus and Toss Woollaston. Colin McCahon’s shift to Titirangi in 1953 was a watershed moment in the artist’s career, providing the inspiration for him to develop his interest in cubism and abstraction. It was at Titirangi, inspired by the beauty of the Kauri forests, the Manukau Harbour and the Waitakere Ranges that McCahon acted on his passion for cubism and abstraction. With a sundeck at his new

f two letters could sum up our city in 2016, surely they would be ‘RE’ – as in rebirth, rebuild, restore and reopen. On the 16 October, as part of Christchurch’s BECA Heritage Week celebrations, our beloved Arts Centre reopened its doors to the public. Once again music reverberated from the rafters of the Great Hall; Market Square saw time travellers doing an archaeological dig, while others tried their hands at stonemasonry. In the newly landscaped North Quadrangle, people visited the Library to view SCAPE Public Art’s ‘Season 2016’ exhibition, and popped into interactive science museum Rutherford’s Den.
“The approach for this rebuild was always to do it in stages, so people could take sneak peeks on progress and see for themselves that it’s really happening!”

Spring has sprung in Ōtautahi - Christchurch, trees are in blossom and flowers scent the air.
Caroline Fenton, media spokesperson for the Arts Centre, indicates areas on a planning map in the boardroom of the Clock Tower building. “It’s all happening. Bunsen café will soon open downstairs, along with Zen Sushi and Dumplings, and The Curator’s Deli in the Registry building, corner of Montreal Street and Worcester Boulevard. In the Boys’ High building, an i-SITE visitor information centre and Department of Conservation will soon operate from the ground floor. And in 2017, U.C. Music, Classics and the James Logie Memorial Collection open in the Chemistry Block.” We head outside to take in the changes. Caroline looks very happy. “The approach for this rebuild was always to do it in stages, so people could take sneak peeks on progress and see for themselves that it’s really happening!” Go to: www.artscentre.org.nz

mall hands and much laughter made quick work of planting the trees, which are part of an initiative by the Christchurch City Council, Canterbury District Health Board, and Food Resilience Network. The initiative looks to create a network of edible gardens across the city, to enable the access of healthy locally grown food for all. “The aim to get fruit trees into schools and communities is a project that has been very close to my heart for almost three years now.
Having food eaten in the immediate area in which it is grown is great for everyone,’’ said former Christchurch City Councillor Ali Jones. Gardening ambassador Rachel Vogan and local councillor Ali Jones worked with Waimea Nursery in Nelson, to get excess fruit trees down to Christchurch and into the community, with many more donated by the Heritage Fruit Archive, Canterbury Horticultural Society’s Orchards in School programme, and Christchurch City Council’s Harewood nursery.

A STARRY NIGHT By Céline Gibson
From their twelfth storey room at the J W Marriot Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles, on Sunday, September 18th, Craig Hutchison of CAS’n’OVA PRODUCTIONS and his life/business partner Ali Robb watched the red carpet being rolled out at The Staples Centre for the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards. “The Staples is next to our hotel, so we got a birds-eye view,” says Craig.
C
raig and Ali were invited to the Emmys courtesy of L.A. producer Peggy Lane O’Rourke. “I’m co-producing a short film with Peggy called Anne Frank Meets God,” explains Craig. Our chat inevitably turns to celebrity spotting. “There was Margo Martindale who won for Best Drama Guest Actress,” offers Craig, “And Henri Winkler paid tribute to Happy Days creator Garry Marshall who died July, 2016.” Ali recalls Peggy greeting Jon Cryer from Two and a Half Men. “She’d worked with him before, apparently.” Next up for discussion is Ali’s gorgeous gown. “It’s from Kevin Moore, red satin with beaded bodice.” We look at Facebook photos of the couple; Ali looks stunning. “In December we’re
attending the Royal Variety Performance in London, so my dress gets a second outing,” smiles Ali. “It’s crucial to attend these prestigious events – to keep our Kiwi profile out there.” Craig mentions a New Zealand feature film project that he hopes Julian Fellowes, creator of Downton Abbey, may get wind of. Before leaving Los Angeles, they visited The Milky Way restaurant. Craig and Ali gave the owner, a certain Leah Adler Spielberg, a gift from Kaikoura. “She remembered me from my prior visit in April,” says Craig with a twinkle in his eye. “I know her son stops by the restaurant quite often.” Looking ahead, apart from his coproducer role on Anne Frank Meets God, Craig’s excited to be directing some trailers for a couple of shorts being made in Los Angeles. “One of them, in particular, was a very moving story.” Ali reflects on her time at the Emmy Awards, “To experience the experience – that was everything!” Craig agrees, “It was a first for us both, but it certainly won’t be our last!” When it comes to Craig Hutchison – watch this space.

A vibrant backdrop for the

A
retirement village can help enrich quality of life and residents can be part of a wider community while still living in the privacy of their independent unit, says sales consultant, Donna Monk. “Older people who are future proofing or finding the responsibilities of maintaining their own home increasingly difficult, appreciate the ease of village life and access to the wide range of facilities and services, as well as recreational classes and social events provided by the village. It also gives you more time and the freedom to pursue other activities such as travelling – this way, you can just lock up and leave.” Many people also choose to live in a retirement village for the company, she says. “Living in your own home can be lonely and isolating
for some people, especially if they are no longer driving and their neighbours or family are at work during the day. Living in a retirement village is a great opportunity to make new friends and find new interests.” From independent living through to full rest home care, Elmswood Retirement Village is located close to the heart of the city on Wairakei Road, surrounded by beautiful gardens and open spaces. A hospital is due to open alongside the rest home in March 2017, offering even more peace of mind for residents and their families. LYTTELTON MASTERPLAN: Masterpiece in the making By Céline Gibson
Thirty-two years ago, American biologist E.O. Wilson wrote Biophilia, and made that word famous. It means “love of life”, but Wilson defined it further: Biophilia is humans’ innate tendency to focus on living things as opposed to inanimate things. Wilson’s comments on children learning about nature solely from screen-watching are salient: In order to develop fully, children must experience nature and its wildlife firsthand.
G
reg Jack of the Lyttelton Mountain Bike Club; Richard Hopkins – Lyttelton Reserves Management Committee Chairperson; Kim Kelleher Lyttelton Port Company Environmental Manager, and Alec McWhinnie – LPC Port Engineer, agree wholeheartedly with this. As we begin our uphill walk, the conversation becomes animated.
Greg indicates the boundary-line between the Department of Conservation’s Buckley’s Bay Reserve and LPC’s Port Saddle. Wherever we look the views are stunning. Kim explains about LPC’s Port Saddle Master Plan. “Lyttelton Port is committed to enhancing the ecology and environment of the harbour area for future generations.
We want to improve access, and plan recreation linkages from Lyttelton township to Urumau Reserve and the Crater Rim Walkway.” Traversing the twisty tracks of Urumau Reserve, you have to admire the dedication of mountain bike members who have hacked out pathways, up-hill and downdale. “Cheaper than a gym,” laughs Greg. Kim recalls a recent “classroom” day at Port Saddle, facilitated by LPC, the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust and EnviroSchools. “The kids loved the lizards!” You can’t beat firsthand experience; ask E.O. Wilson. Lyttelton Mountain Bike Club: www.lytteltonmtb.club

Building success
FROM SCRATCH 1. From what age did you have ambitions to create something in the league that you have? I embarked on the dream of Cavit&Co 25 years ago. Having previously worked in commercial interior design, and having seen the wonderful ranges of furniture available internationally, I wanted to realise that level of design in New Zealand. 2. What strategy has been involved with your professional journey? Right from the beginning I have strived to obtain exclusive agencies from some of the finest furniture manufacturers in the world. I have been fortunate in retaining great staff and in finding brilliant locations for my showrooms in Auckland, Christchurch and Arrowtown. It is a privilege to have had the loyalty of our clients for all these years and we always strive to launch new collections to keep our clients interested and to offer continually appropriate, timeless design. We ensure we are aware of the essence of sophisticated design that doesn’t date, therefore representing true contemporary, classic design. However, strategising optimal plans for the business plays a huge part in planning and executing a business dream. I spend hours planning our furniture collections and accessories. Keeping the integrity of each brand is paramount and it takes a lot of forward planning to realise that.
Genuine originality in a world saturated with comparable commodities requires a true visionary. A local patriot with global resonance and networks, Debbie Cavit of esteemed Cavit&Co is a rightful member of the visionary club. Debbie discusses strategy, exclusivity and the true definition of elegance with Metropol.

3. What do you think it takes to achieve and retain a premium identity in a global marketplace where ‘exclusivity’ can fall victim to oversaturation? There is no room for doubt when approaching an international supplier for an exclusive agency for their brand. We only work with the best designers and manufacturers in the world and don’t deal with any products that are not ours exclusively in New Zealand. To that
end our designs don’t tend to suffer from oversaturation. Our furniture is made to order, not mass produced and that keeps it a premium product. We specifically avoid offering the ordinary. We look for the best manufacturer available for any given style that we wish to offer to our clients ... Quality is paramount and nobody ever regretted buying quality. 4. What have been some of the most rewarding milestones in Cavit&Co’s journey to date? I think being in business for 25 years this year was a major milestone and affected me far more than I thought it would. Looking back, I was overwhelmed by the number of amazing people I associate with and the ongoing relationships that have endured. Opening our gorgeous showroom in Christchurch was another enormously proud moment.
5. What has governed your decision making process when partnering with brands? I like our showroom to give a sense of a home with global elegance. I always consider all the brands we showcase and don’t embark on new collections unless they work sympathetically with what we already have. Nothing jars in the showrooms. The settings work well with each other and that gives our showrooms a warm and inviting atmosphere. It is so much easier to select furniture and accessories when shown in a realistic environment. 6. Without giving away any secrets… what are some of your ultimate ambitions over the coming years? Well, I do have to keep my secrets
close, but I would like to continue to develop the business. There is no point in standing still and I love nothing more than the excitement of doing something new. 7. Do you have any particular mentors or inspirations? Barbara Barry who is a designer of global significance has always been a person I look up to. Her timeless design, personal elegance and sophistication have always married well with my own personal aspirations. 8. What is your favourite ‘life mantra’? The best way to help limit the wasteful use of the world’s diminishing resources is to buy well, buy once and love it for life.
“The best way to help limit the wasteful use of the world’s diminishing resources is to buy well, buy once and love it for life.” Debbie Cavit

ringing the crème de la crème of Australian and New Zealand’s designers, Zebrano’s fashion collections, together with its team of professional stylists, can help you feel fabulous as you segue into summer. According to Zebrano’s Design Director Jenny Smith women have the same dressing challenges; no matter what size they wear. “All women want the same result – to look and feel fabulous,” says Jenny. “Knowing what styles work best for your body shape, rather than focusing on size, ensures you will have a wardrobe that works for you.” A tip from Zebrano is to look at a garment’s “design lines”. These lines draw the eye to the shoulder, sides or hem, which are more important
elements to consider rather than whether a fabric is striped, patterned or plain. “It’s all about creating focus where you want it,” Jenny explains. Trends to expect this spring and summer include exposed shoulders, sporty mesh fabrics, classic marle grey knits, and splashes of vibrant orange. Other great options for an instant wardrobe update are lingerie-inspired daywear, layering of semi-sheer pieces, bold stripes, preppy plaid, grown-up gingham, and pretty garden florals. Visit Zebrano at 169 Victoria Street for cutting edge contemporary and classic everyday wear for size 14+ from top Australasian designers including Chocolat, Code, Curate by Trelise Cooper, Cusp, Euphoria, Mela Purdie, Megan Salmon, and Obi.

Metallic There’s an inspiring dose of metallic magic in the air this spring and summer. It’s taking the form of some fabulous foot candy that can help your look transition from day to night.
T
he key with embracing the metallic aesthetic is that less is more. While the allure of gold (yellow or rose), copper, silver, green or blue may bring out our inner magpie, metallic shoes needs to march to the beat of their own drum without competing for attention with other metallics. That’s not to say metallic on metallic won’t work but this bold sartorial expression needs careful consideration. This season, we’ve joined the growing fan club of a metallic shoe with a gentle pastel ensemble or as the perfect way to polish off skinny jeans paired with a cold shoulder blouse. One thing’s for sure, Robin Pierre in Merivale Mall is an absolute haven for metallic footwear. We’ve picked out some of our favourites that we know other fashionistas will be fawning over. Cutting a traditional silhouette, but with a whole lot of personality, we think these styles will help us put our best foot forward during the warmer weather.

SUMMER HOLIDAY
ESSENTIALS By Majka Kaiser
Pack like a fashion editor so you can travel lighter and never be caught out no matter where the wind blows.
H
ow many times have you packed and repacked your suitcase with half of what you started with and still found yourself with nothing that goes together? Good planning is the key to creating the ultimate travel capsule wardrobe, so get organised before you hit the tarmac. Confining your colour palette to no more than three shades means everything will harmonise. Add a splash of colour with jewellery and accessories in a contrasting colour. Lay out each outfit on your bed and swap key pieces around to see what goes with what. A good rule of thumb to go by is if you can’t wear something with two different pieces, then leave it at home. Layering is the ideal way to ward off frigid in-flight air or the ocean breeze at sunset. Pack a lightweight shawl that can be worn different ways in a neutral colour that can be easily mixed and matched with different outfits. Other excellent layering pieces are tunics and oversized shirts that can be worn with or without jeans or leggings underneath, and shirtdresses that can be slipped on over your swimsuit. Opt for pieces that are multi-functional like a kimono that can be worn as a dress with sandals during the day and wedges at night, over pants for a casual bohemian vibe, or as a cover-up, which co-ordinates with your bikini for elegant poolside chic. Ditch the heels for easy-wear wedges if you yearn for something a little dressier in the evenings. Two pairs of shoes usually suffice; a pair of strappy sandals and a pair of casual trainers for comfort on long walks. Another great comfort tip from high-flying fashionistas is not to pack anything you bought months ago and have only worn once. Instead pack tried and trusted pieces that you know you feel at home in. Planning your outfits ahead of time means you have something to go with everything, and you also save precious time that can be spent out and about enjoying the sights instead of agonising over what to wear in your hotel room.

UP Burning
It may be a wild contrast to the pretty pastels dominating the sartorial scene right now, but burnt orange is also wooing fashionistas with its vibrant charm.
A
match made in heaven with neutrals, patterns (requires consideration) and even dynamic purple, burnt orange found its fashionable feet way back in 1915 when the medium dark shade of orange adopted this fitting title. It can be particularly fun to flirt with burnt orange with outfit accents like sunglasses, nail-polish, a scarf, fedora, or a clutch, but you can also dive into the aesthetic this spring/summer with a high waist skirt or culottes or a floor skimming maxi dress. We’re thinking Cup Day might just be the opportunity to play with the possibilities.

endometriosis and fertility issues come into appointments with their daughters. “Mothers who have had endometriosis are very switched on about potential fertility. Their daughters don’t always appreciate how precious it is.” Early diagnosis and intervention will improve symptoms, reduce the chances of developing chronic pain and will minimise potential fertility issues. Mr Dover stresses that the management of endometriosis does not always include surgery, although clearly it does have an important role. He advocates a multidisciplinary approach, one which includes the options of medical and surgical therapies, but also addresses the role of diet, physiotherapy for pelvic floor muscles and education about endometriosis and its lifestyle influences. “We’ve developed a multidisciplinary team at Oxford Women’s Health that includes nutritionists, a physiotherapist with an interest in pelvic pain, a clinical

For young women facing a diagnosis of endometriosis, fertility is usually the last thing on their minds. But according to specialists at Oxford Women’s Health, being proactive in dealing with pelvic pain can help to preserve future fertility.
nfortunately women who have endometriosis have a higher chance of experiencing fertility problems,” says Mr Richard Dover, a clinician at Oxford Women’s Health and specialist at Genea Oxford Fertility. “We need to ensure that future fertility is considered throughout our conversations and we need to treat the pain.” It is thought that as many as 10 percent of the female population may have endometriosis. In many of these women the disease will be chronic and progressive. An early diagnosis therefore can improve a woman’s quality of life and significantly improve her fertility. “Young women don’t always think about the next chapter in their life. A teenager experiencing painful periods isn’t thinking about her ability to conceive.” Mr Dover says the subject of fertility often arises when mothers who have experienced

But it becomes a fine balance. We want to eradicate endometriosis, but not at the risk of damaging future fertility. Endometriosis is not a black and white issue so we offer a range of surgical, medical and holistic options. And we have access to our own world class fertility clinic, Genea Oxford Fertility.” When you consider how common endometriosis is amongst women of child-bearing age and its negative impact on fertility, it is easy to appreciate that it is an issue for a significant number of women. “A large proportion of patients at Genea Oxford Fertility have endometriosis so we’ve developed a special protocol to manage their fertility treatment. “Patients are not just a number. We discuss individual patient care at regular clinical meetings so we can tailor treatment plans and pain management to suit each individual. It’s an example of how we use our gynaecological expertise to treat endometriosis proactively and improve fertility outcomes for our patients.” If you suspect you have endometriosis, or a problem conceiving, call Oxford Women’s Health on 379 0555. FIGHTING POLLUTION WITH INNOVATION “I believe that by painting these largescale murals around Aotearoa, we will be able to engage with a variety of people that normally wouldn’t think twice about the environment.” Tess Sheerin
Sheerin’s mural on North Durham Street.
A
ptly titled ‘New Zealand’s Worth Loving’, her innovative campaign visualises the extent to which humans are gravely impacting marine life and waterways with their ‘throw away’ nature and apathetic approach to environmental awareness. The murals already grace walls in Queenstown and Dunedin and a third has just been completed in Christchurch. Wellington is next on the agenda and finally the tour will end with Auckland. “I took my niece and my family’s dog to the beach last summer and in a short walk collected two large bags filled with rubbish. I have investigated the impact rubbish has on our coastlines and the knock on effect of single-plastics in particular that are killing our marine and wildlife and the results are awful,” Tess explains of her motivation. “I believe that by painting these large-scale murals around Aotearoa, we will be able to engage with a variety of people that normally wouldn’t think twice about the environment.” To coincide with each mural, Sheerin co-ordinates and supports clean-up events and public awareness campaigns that concentrate on waterways, lakes and coastal areas around New Zealand. To support Tess’ new project supported by Gap Filler and Avon Otakaro Network, visit www.tesssheerin.com/donate.html. Any contribution will be put towards scissor lift hire, materials, artist hours and film crews for the murals. Keep an eye out for beach and waterway clean up listings in your own neck of the woods.

Landscapes Captured on Canvas Growing up surrounded by the mountains and open spaces of the South Island, the landscape has long been an inspiration to artist Charles Pickworth.
W
orking in oils and acrylics on canvas, Charles is a self-taught artist. He began his own artistic journey while working as a gatekeeper for the railways, painting with one arm after contracting polio as a young boy which in turn led to an amputation when he was 20 years old. With permission from his boss, he painted landscapes from photographs during the quiet work hours, displaying his work in their large smoko room. Now a full time painter Charles has refined and developed his techniques over the decades, bringing his own unique style to each painting. “I can paint anywhere – in a crowd of a million, out on location or in my studio,” says Charles, whose paintings have been exhibited in a number of galleries around the South Island. His work often takes him out on location to the dramatic peaks and coastlines of the South Island, creating scenes from the landscape he is drawn to, or that which has special meaning for his customers. This can be anything from a bach in the Marlborough Sounds, a road often travelled, or other subject matters including family pets, animals, boats and planes, and still life. Painting on location has its challenges in the weather, lighting and even sandflies, each painting taking several hours to complete dependent on its size. Some are fully completed on location, while Charles adds the finishing touches to others from his studio, as well as continuing to create pieces from photographs on commission. Charles will be holding an exhibition of selected works in his studio at 11 Blairdon Place in Bishopdale, on Saturday 12 November for one week. He is happy for customers to try a painting out for size in their own home, to discuss creating an original either on location or from photographs, and also offers private tuition for the budding artist. For more information, drop in to view Charles’ work at 11 Blairdon Place in Bishopdale or give him a call on 359 5972.

Cake smash By Melinda Collins
There are few times in life where it’s considered socially acceptable to smash fistfuls of cake in one’s own face, but thankfully, first birthdays are now one of them.

Cake smash parties, which started as a quirky way to mark a child’s first birthday, have now taken the world by storm. Every child approaches the cake smash differently – there are the foot squishers, the face planters, the screamers, the chillers, those who take teeny tiny tastes and those who can’t get the fists full of icing in their mouths fast enough. This photo craze has become so popular that photographers are offering cake smash sessions. With plenty of websites offering ideas and tips, why not give it a go for yourself? Worst case scenario, you’re going to end up with a little bit of mess and a whole lot of fun. And, with the expected mess that comes with the classic cake smash, many a family is choosing to go with the ‘smash and splash’ parties, where babies are pictured having bubble baths after demolishing their desserts, with the photos of the tots in their tubs making a great contrast.

IN THE KITCHEN Our oldest rellies were cooking and processing their food as far back as 1.9 million years ago.
A
nd, although their cooking tools may have come a long way, it seems they were on the money when it came to methods, with steaming – one of the oldest ways to cook – surging in popularity as we become increasingly aware of the health and flavour benefits. Steaming cooks food through direct contact between steam (conduction) as well as the movement of the hot vapour through the food (convection), no fat is needed to conduct the heat, making steaming a lower-calorie, low fat cooking method. Steaming cooks and seals in flavour, eliminating
stones, modern technology makes the process a lot less labour intensive and, even if you don’t have an electric steamer, there are still several equally simple options. You can use a covered steaming pot or just a perforated basket that rests above a pot of boiling water; simply wrap foods to be steamed in foil; or you can use Chinese bamboo steamers that stack on top of a wok. Because steaming is gentle, it is perfect for cooking delicate foods—most vegetables, white meat fowl, and fish are all good candidates for steaming. Foods also stay moist from being bathed in water vapour, making steaming perfect for fish and shellfish by not drying out the delicate flesh. Halibut, cod and snapper steam particularly well. Other applications for steaming include Chinese dumplings, and by association other stuffed pastas such as ravioli, small semolina pasta (including couscous) and even biscuit-style dumplings and bread-type doughs, potatoes and other starchy vegetables (corn, carrots, etc). Even fruit and cakes such as Great Britain’s steamed puddings are candidates. So for something different, why not try getting steamy in the kitchen this summer?

transition seamlessly from informal tipples and nibbles, to a sit down meal, right through to a more exuberant ‘night out’. In spite of the change in location, and the multifaceted nature of both spots, I can say with surety that the brand’s proposition shines on with clarity. The philosophy the teams lives and breathes can be distilled down to great food and beverages, great ambience and great service. Visiting both locations, it’s clear that each has its own distinct vibe and offering, while equally being very complementary and synergistic in nature. Located in a quaint Villa on Riccarton Road with ample parking, Dux Dine is devoted to diversity. dinner – the choice is available from 7am until late during the weekdays and from 9am onwards on weekends. A hop, skip and a jump across town, located in the progressive CBD, sister bar and restaurant Dux Central has made its mark. With more than 200 craft beers ready to tempt the palate along with vibrant cuisine, I settle in with a delicious New Zealand wine and slow roasted lamb salad.
Guests like myself can meander between four distinct and dynamic environments – from ‘The Upper Dux’ overlooking the evolution of the City’s rebuild, and on to the exquisite Emerald Room, engaging Poplar Social Club and out to The Courtyard, which promises to be bathed in sunshine over the summer. My verdict is straightforward – the Dux legacy lives on and all that’s left to be said is to experience it for yourself.

An unparalleled experience Bessie on St Asaph Street is the distilled essence of a true dining experience. Its world class team has meaningfully and purposefully curated and created an environment that is so much more than the exquisite food on the plate.
B
essie was born from the simple yet significant conviction that Christchurch’s hospitality scene was missing certain X factor – a culinary invention in the form of a restaurant and bar that would push the gastronomic boundaries in looks, feel and function. Embracing the virtues of a ‘nose to tail’ concept with its cuisine, Bessie is redefining innovation. The chic restaurant is certainly in its element helping some of the finest grade cuts of Canterbury meat to reach their potential, but it is the experimentation with secondary cuts that also commands attention and interest. Less commonly used cuts are taking front and centre stage charming those with a more adventurous palate.

Menu designer - Chris Scott, formerly the Head Chef at the famed Rata Restaurant – has created multiple opportunities for diners to indulge in something modern and magical. Chief Executive James Arnott explains, “We wanted to create something special and unique for the people of Christchurch. Yes, it is premium dining but there is no pretension here. We think we’ve done a pretty good job of combining a high quality dining experience with a vibrant atmosphere people can actually have a good time in.” The luxe décor pays homage to the world’s most fashionable locales – the exposed brick walls create a NYC loft-esque feel while the chic lighting and furniture creates a London vibe. Caramelized Pineapple Carrot Cake Preheat oven to 325°F/160°C. Lightly oil two 8-in/20-cm cake pans, line with baking paper circles and set on a baking tray. Sauté diced pineapple in a large sauté pan with first measure of brown sugar over medium-high heat until caramelized and juices have evaporated. Add ginger and raisins, then cool. Stir in vanilla paste and set aside. Mix oil, sugars and eggs together in a large bowl with a wooden spoon or spatula until combined. Sift flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. Whisk in ground toasted oatmeal to dry ingredients, combining well. Pour egg mixture into dry ingredients, mixing well with spatula. Add grated carrot, then pineapple mixture, combining well. Divide batter equally into cake pans. Bake for 45-50 minutes until cake springs back when softly pressed. Turn out on racks when completely cool.
Cardamom Cream Cheese Frosting Make sure cream cheese and butter are at room temperature, but cool and solid. Sift the sugar, cardamom, and a big pinch of sea salt. Set aside. Beat butter on low speed until it is smooth. Add cream cheese, beating until creamy, then add lime juice and vanilla. Add sugar mixture on low speed until just combined. Ice cakes with frosting and, if wished, garnish with flashfried candied carrots and oven-dried pineapple slices. Metropol November 3, 2016 57
Thai with
flair
Extensively renovated last year, Kum Pun Thai in Victoria Street has a strikingly elegant black and gold interior and an equally sleek and spacious beer garden with black and red rattan furniture from Chiang Mai. All this makes the statement that this is not your typical neighbourhood Thai restaurant.
T
he setting is a wonderful place to unwind and indulge in a special and exotic dining experience. With its marriage of sweet, sour and spicy flavours, flowery aromas and a succulent “punchiness”, Thai food is a masterpiece of opposing tastes. It’s a juggling act with disparate elements to create a harmonious finish and Kum Pun Thai caters for all palates with its extensive menu of traditional, modern and seasonal dishes. The focus here is on authenticity and affordable prices. Three chefs from hotels in different regions of Thailand work their magic at Kum Pun Thai creating food that delights the senses, featuring everything from Pad Thai prawn, to soft shell crab and roast or deep
fried duck. The dishes are often quite spectacular. The Massaman lamb shank, the Choo Chee prawns and the Sea Star chicken wontons exclusive to Kum Pun Thai are stunning visual masterpieces to be admired before being eaten. To top off your meal, why not try a banana roll dessert or black sticky rice served with ice cream? A fully-licensed restaurant, Kum Pun features an allencompassing wine and beer list as well as cocktails with intriguing names that evoke the scents and landscape of Thailand. The staff at the restaurant are attentive and knowledgeable; the ambience relaxed, casual and friendly. Kum Pun Thai is open seven days. Phone 365 5494. Lunch is only $12.

From crop to
culinary masterpiece While you’re sipping your morning coffee and reading the paper Christopher and Jenny Gray are probably already out on their property along with pickers, harvesting their asparagus crop – those green spears of deliciousness that we wait all winter for.
“O
ur asparagus season begins on 1 October and goes through to the end of the year,” says Christopher whose family have farmed in the Motukarara area for four generations. “The soil here is high in sodium and eminently suitable for growing asparagus of the very best quality.” The Grays planted their first bed of asparagus in 2003 and maintain their strict quality control from field to grading shed. They are immensely proud of their product and stand behind every single bunch. No rubber band holds these spears together, but instead they are bound up with tape bearing the Grays’ name and address. “The tape says ‘This is our asparagus.’” The asparagus is sold at farmers’ markets in Ohoka, Lyttelton, Riccarton House, Opawa and Lincoln and at the farm gate – 1905 SH 75 (the Christchurch to Akaroa Road). In addition you can find the Grays’ asparagus on the menu at several top Canterbury restaurants, including the award-winning Roots in Lyttelton. While tender, slim asparagus spears are traditionally sought after, Jenny says some people prefer the wider fleshier tips instead. “Every growing season is a little different, but we always have sufficient product to supply the farmers’ markets and to supply the Leader Brand packhouse in Chertsey which sends the asparagus on to supermarkets. Next year we’re looking to set up a commercial kitchen so we can produce our own bottled asparagus.”

principle behind each dish at Green Chilli. With a focus on sumptuous small plates, tapas and shared platters, as well as top-notch cocktails, Dragon’s Den is the perfect venue for a range of functions and events. Catering for up to 80 people, Andrew and his accomplished 2IC chef Craig constantly create new, exciting dishes for the ever-evolving menu. We also offer both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink pairings to perfectly match the flavours and layers of each dish.” Dragon’s Den is also just about socialising and having fun, Andrew says. “We currently have a Spanish guitarist on Friday nights to bring that chilled lounge vibe to the Den. It’s the perfect place to unwind and get together with friends, while enjoying great food.” Located near The Colombo, Dragon’s Den is open from Wednesday through to Saturday, from 5pm until late.

EXTERIORS INTERIORS BUILDING OUTDOORS KITCHENS & BATHROOMS
BRITISH STYLE ENCAPSULATED When we think about the interiors of houses, we often start by concentrating on the architecture, or on the key pieces of furniture, or the rugs, pictures and lamps, colours, textures and incidental moments. But, as interior designer and author Ben Pentreath explores in his new book, English Houses, a perfectly decorated room without people to occupy it, love it, and live in it is meaningless; and a room without a sense of time and of evolution is as empty as a diary containing entirely blank pages.
This edited excerpt comes from English Houses by Ben Pentreath with photography by Jan Baldwin. Published by Ryland Peters & Small and distributed by Bookreps NZ.
68 November 3, 2016 Metropol
A
fter all, interiors are far less durable than architecture and are subject to the whims of owners, of fashion, and of taste; their moment may be brief - photographs of famous rooms can be far more enduring than the spaces themselves. Longevity is not necessarily the important ingredient. Not a believer in rooms remaining fixed in aspic or the possibility of assembling a room in an instant and for it to feel anything other than like a hotel, Pentreath loves interiors that evolve. While big structural alterations may last a long time, he says it’s fun to shake things up, to move things around, and to make space for a new picture or pieces of furniture from the junk auction that you have no room for, but couldn’t live without. As these changes happen over time,
it allows for mistakes and experiments, for shifts in mind or mood, and all of this is what makes life interesting! Ben encourages his clients to take things slowly; to first bring in the big pieces, which take care and thought, but then let the little touches of life evolve and mature more gently. While good decoration is a matter of opinion and not of fact, Ben believes his role as decorator, is as a collaborator, giving clients the confidence and ability to explore their own ideas. In a world saturated by images, with so many choices and ideas, the homes showcased in English Houses best exemplify a way of putting rooms together that reflects an unhurried and personal approach, which Pentreath believes to be the true defining characteristic of the finest English interiors.

here were a number of initiatives that were undertaken to generate the vision of our central city. They offered an opportunity for us to have our say and from these initiatives, and the subsequent blueprint for a post-quake Christchurch, emerged anchor projects; large scale public buildings that will bring opportunity and activity to the city. job opportunities; a sense of life. Yet there is a reluctance to see the anchor projects advance; the very things that will generate what is missing from our city and secure Christchurch a strong financial and cultural future. One of the most polarising major construction projects is the rugby stadium, with many questioning the amount that is to be spent, and whether this should, and could, be better utilised elsewhere. With a temporary stadium currently serving the city reasonably well
With a temporary stadium currently serving the city reasonably well I accept that there are other priorities, but I don’t accept that it shouldn’t be part of our future plan. I accept that there are other priorities, but I don’t accept that it shouldn’t be part of our future plan. The value a new stadium will bring to the city is about much more than simply rugby. To be an international city, we need to be able to host large scale events. We need to have the facility to attract and host activities. To do this we need to ensure we are investing in the financial and cultural future of the city; the Convention Centre is not going to sustain Christchurch on its own.
Currently the debate around the stadium has become a political hot potato, with both central and local government avoiding a commitment around when and how. Lancaster Park, Jade Stadium, AMI Stadium - however you refer to it - long endeared itself as an open space within Christchurch with its ability to host large scale international events and activities. Much more than simply a rugby stadium, it was where international musicians entertained us, where potatoes were grown to help feed the city during World War One
and it offered a stage for prayer, with Pope John Paul II holding a public mass in the oval in 1986. Pre-quake we were passionate about our stadium. I still recall the public outrage when the naming rights for it were sold to a corporate; we believed we were losing something important to our city. What started as a swampy farmland, with little vision, became a cornerstone of the city; a cultural and sporting location with historical, cultural and economic significance. Just because we have earmarked a piece of land for a future stadium, doesn’t mean that it instantly has to be that. We should be putting up goal posts, marking out a pitch and letting kids kick a ball. We need to let it earn its place within our hearts. As we learn to utilise this open space and develop an attachment, we can then transform it into something else. We would never have had a stadium at Lancaster Park had it not been activated for its purpose. When we build a new home, we learn how to occupy it. We develop an appreciation and love for it through interaction. We need to stop focusing on a stadium and start using the land – rather than leaving it as a vacant wasteland to be debated in council chambers. www.caarc.co.nz

LOVIN’ LAYERS Layers in a living space can create all sorts of delicious pleasures for the senses. From aesthetic to tactile, there are ways to introduce layers that imbue a room with texture.
S
ynonymous with comfort and visual warmth, layering with purpose and to perfection is all about balance, so we have compiled a list of tips that will help you master the art in your own abode.
Book worm: Floating shelves can hide a multitude of sins on walls and look ultrachic when hosting beautifully stacked books.
3.
Slow and steady wins the design race: if you’re entering into previously unchartered territory, building up a collection of pieces is best done with strategic consideration. Fundamentals include rugs, throws, cushions and plants – these are great base pieces from which you can start to introduce layers into your space.
1. 2.
Stack ‘em up: Using one focal art print and then adding smaller framed prints is a savvy way to create a layered look, as is staggering cushions of all sizes on a sofa with a delicious throw adopting a carefree position draped over its shoulder.
Experiment with contrasting yet complementary patterns and fabrics as part of your layering adventure.

Take advantage of underutilised wall space under windows and the ceiling. Install adjustable shelves or pegboards for hanging, and ceiling racks for seasonal items. If your outdoor furniture and camping gear is buried under your snow boards and skis, then it’s time to relegate winter toys up high or down low, to create easy access to summer equipment. Hardware stores like Mitre 10 have an abundance of ready-made cabinets and shelving, and their Elfa garage storage range can be customised with pegboards, tool clips and hooks. to create a fantastic, usable space while complying with Council regulations. If you are investing in a swimming pool we encourage you to also get a landscape plan produced. Landscape architects can help from simply orientating the pool to maximising your outdoor space through to providing a landscape design which fully integrates the pool into the wider landscape. Louvre roof systems are still proving to be a prevalent landscape feature and have many customising features you can pick and choose from. Louvres come in a range of sizes and colours, allowing the look to complement any new or existing house which they are being fixed to. They can also have side screens and sound systems built in, creating a weatherproof outdoor entertainer’s dream. The side screens are particularly effective as screens to any prevailing winds while creating a true outdoor room. Colour theming is strong this season, maximising the effect of Christmas decorations and at Terra Viva choosing your theme is easy, either for a new look, or for enhancing existing decorations.
V
intage White shines with laser cut lit houses, porcelain hearts, doves, angels, and fairies with a glitter dusting. For contrast, there’s City Slick White with LED lighting, and stick trees, clear perspex angels, porcelain villages, white stags, plus napkins and candles from Citta and French Country. Timeless Classic Gold is well represented by long tapered candles, angels, and gold lanterns. Bronze Modern is fun and funky - fairies with bronze foil hair and angels with tin hair, while the Casual Beach look is just right for those enjoying a bach Christmas. For children choosing their own decoration, check out the Girls’ Tree with angels, fairies, and four-legged friends, and the Boys’ Tree with racing cars, soldiers, and choppers. Terra Viva is holding a Christmas Spree on 1 December - the shop will close at 5pm and re-open at 5.30pm with discounts ranging from 20 percent to 50 percent (customers take a marked ball out of the lucky dip tub to get the discounts), with bubbly, finger food, Christmas cake, goodie bags, and freebies on offer.
FESTIVE FURNISHINGS The silly season calls for more than just the gluttony that goes hand-in-hand with its many social occasions.
I
t’s also that wonderful time of the year when homes can be injected with a serious dose of Christmas creativity that gives the clichés a wide berth. From gold painted antlers (a nod to Saint Nick’s spritely crew) through to cheeky platters for your table, there are a million and one ways to introduce Christmas into your home with sophistication and style. If you’re feeling ambitious, start a Pinterest board of DIY decorations and furnishings that you can work towards. If, like us, you’re relatively time poor, then you’ll discover all sorts of décor goodies at abode havens.

CAR OF THE AUTO NEWS ROAD TESTS NEW MODELS AUTO EVENTS
YEAR It’s the event that celebrates the best of the best in the New Zealand motoring industry - the annual New Zealand Car of the Year Awards is back in style.
T
he top 10 finalists for 2016 New Zealand Car of the Year have been announced, along with details of the event which will take place at the ANZ Viaduct Events Centre in Auckland on Wednesday 7 December. The shortlist, which was narrowed down by a panel of the country’s top automotive writers from the New Zealand Writers guild (NZMWG) and AA Motoring, has some of my personal favourites among them. Battling it out this year for the New Zealand Car of the Year prize are Holden Spark, Honda Civic, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-9, MercedesBenz E-Class, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Skoda Superb, Subaru Levorg, Suzuki Vitara and Volkswagen Tiguan – all going head to head.
By Nicholas Henare
Not every vehicle this year makes the grade and the list of finalists represents Kiwis’ ongoing love affair with SUVs, which make up nearly 40% of all new vehicle sales. New Zealanders will also get the chance to have their say when voting for the Car of the Year People’s Choice Award, sponsored this year by www.autotrader.co.nz. In addition, the Safest Car for 2016 will be announced at the event, based on Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) crash test results. Find out more about the finalists and the categories on the official car of the year website at www.aa.co.nz/about/ events-affiliations/new-zealand-carof-the-year-2016 and follow the AA on Facebook. There are some prizes to be won as well!

The convertible to end all convertibles
By Nicholas Henare
I love convertibles. My first was a Triumph Herald and there are many fun memories that go hand-in-hand with that car.
F
ast forward to 2016 and check out the Holden Cascada; it has all the kit you would ever need for a sporty convertible. We’re talking 20-inch alloy wheels, daytime running lights, rear-view camera, rain sensing wipers and sports front seats - all in a four-seater. Being able to retract the fabric roof while on the move (a trick that can be completed in 17 seconds and at speeds of up to 50km/h) is a big plus too. This is a feature missing from the likes of even the all-new Ford Mustang Convertible. If you’re dropping the top and heading to a Waipara Winery, you want something with a bit of style but power to boot. Featuring a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder, turbopetrol engine (the one and only available to the Cascada), producing a maximum torque of 260Nm at 1,650rpm, the Cascada is exceptionally quiet and comfortable on smooth roads. The beauty is, it looks good too; top

up, or top down, with a strong muscular stance and an upward sweeping belt line that draws your eyes to the classy rear end. Need I say more? The soft leather seats are comfortable, being both heated and ventilated; I’m sure this feature will make a hot summer’s day drive more enjoyable. With a leather stitched dash, chrome-look details and heated leather steering wheel, the model prides itself on the small details too. With the full suite of modern technology such as the 7.0-inch MyLink display screen, you’ll find the system is home to one of the better navigation units around. In addition to safety credentials such as dual front and side airbags, pop-up rollover protection bars, an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and electronic stability control, the convertible also comes with two ISOFIX child-seat anchorages and front and rear parking sensors. In short, Holden Cascada is an excellent convertible. Like my old Triumph Herald, you’ll be able to create wonderful memories in it. Enjoy!

accelerator; she’s quick off the mark offering a turbo 16 valve, 170kW and 420Nm of torque - the higher the kilowatt with high torque, the faster you go. What that means is an automobile this size has the power to make it feel like you are driving something much smaller…and faster. The interactive dash with windscreen projection is
The next surprise was putting my foot on the accelerator; she’s quick off the mark.
I usually find that first impressions are the things that make a vehicle stand out. The moment I sat in the Mazda CX-9 2.5L Petrol Limited AWD, I knew we were going to be friends.
M
y son Anthony said it best when I picked him up from school “Dad! It’s got so much room back here; there are more seats behind us!” Being a seven seater creates impressive space and the back two seats also fold down to create a massive storage area. The CX-9 ticks the boxes for not only carry room, but safety features too. Blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert, along with a rear camera and sensors offer peace of mind while the Limited model adds radar cruise, adaptive LED high beams, active lane keeping and driver attention alert. The next surprise was putting my foot on the
brilliant and easy to interact with. Another blessing was how quiet the car is on the road. When you have the Bose 12 speakers/294watts sound system playing, it’s even quieter. Fuel economy is at 8.8L/100km with i-stop. Truthfully, I usually find i-stop distracting, but Mazda has got the stop/start feeling pretty seamless. Functional beauty is a great way to sum up the model; it looks great in the Machine Grey Metallic and the interior is very tastefully done. Aspects of the car outdo its competitors and it’s well price pointed at $62,995 - $10,000 to $20,000 cheaper than similar models in the market. I was very impressed with the quality and style presented in the Mazda CX-9. My boys loved it and were disappointed when we had to drop it back… So was I. The CX-9 is one of the top 10 finalists for the AA’s 2016 NZ Car of the Year.

THE AMAROK IS A GRUNTY, INNOVATIVE WEE BEAST.
When I picked up the Volkswagen Amarok for its test drive, my first thoughts were “Yeeeee haaa”.
I
quickly learnt my pre-conceptions were all wrong though – while I initially had the sense I’d be taking on a ‘pick up’, I swiftly realised after 30 minutes that I felt I was driving an SUV. Testing what you would consider a “commercial vehicle” was a bit of fun. It’s efficient, great for towing, and offers a double cab for throwing the
many times, Volkswagen’s dashboard and media/ phone interactive system is the template of design I compare all vehicles to. Simplistic and easy to navigate, it’s a key feature for the modern buyer. I had a bit of a “Tim the Tool Man” persona at one point and actually, it didn’t matter at all. A friend of mine got the Amarok as his new work vehicle and that’s what it’s best suited for, although it also had me thinking with its touch of style, that it’s a vehicle you can use for a plethora of adventures outside of work. A step up for the boss at work who wants something more than a utility vehicle for throwing all his gear in one place, the Amarok offers grunt, comfort and storage. It’s the work truck that’s been built for comfort and price pointed currently from RSP $44,990, it won’t break the bank.

mobility. Transport Minister Simon Bridges recently announced a new and wide-ranging package designed to increase the take-up of electric vehicles in New Zealand and remove barriers such as the lack of charging infrastructure and the low level of awareness of alternative fuel vehicles. Confirming the additions to the company’s comprehensive line-up, BMW Group New Zealand Managing Director, Florian Renndorfer, said the new arrivals would ensure BMW fielded the most comprehensive range of plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles in the country. “The BMW Group is known for its advanced, forward-thinking technology, and these new BMW iPerformance vehicles combine our most popular body styles with the latest innovations in sustainable personal transport. “We have the 225xe which adds an electric powertrain to the already versatile Active Tourer; the iconic 3 Series is now available as the 330e; the legendary X5 with eDrive and xDrive technology; and our luxurious flagship 7 Series is now available with the latest in BMW powertrain technology. “With these four new models available alongside our iconic BMW i3 and BMW i8, the BMW Group is offering the most comprehensive range of plug-in hybrids and EVs in the New Zealand market.” The announcement of the new plug-in hybrid vehicles for New Zealand comes hot on the heels of the BMW i3 – the Group’s first ever bespoke pure electric vehicle - which will shortly receive an update, boasting improved battery technology for an increased range of up to 300 km and the inclusion of DC rapid charging as standard.

BMW founded the “I” range in 2011 and its focus is now on producing all its major models in hybrid or electric versions; a sensible move in these fast changing times. Hitting a 50,000-unit milestone earlier in the year, the i3, is ranked the third bestselling electric car after Tesla at number one and the Nissan leaf at two. The I in BMWi should stand for “innovative” and it’s great to see one of the world’s best prestige brands becoming forward thinking in the face of decreasing use of fossil fuels.

thletic and sporty in design, the new C 43 models deliver an attractive entry into the world of Mercedes-AMG. “The extension of the C-Class family to include the new C 43 models is another component in our growth strategy,” says Mercedes-AMG GmbH Chairman Tobias Moers. For the dynamic driving experience that is the AMG brand, the Affalterbach-based development teams have put together a scintillating engineering package: the 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine is combined with the new 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission to provide agile gearshifts. Together with the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive and the model-specific chassis technology, this provides the optimum basis for high agility and exhilarating lateral dynamics. The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission has been OFF RRP1 modified for the Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC. The AMG developers managed to substantially reduce the 1 shift times of the 9-speed transmission. Nothing worse +ORC than lag time between gear changes on an automatic. It’s great that Mercedes are addressing this for the Rear view camera with front and modern driver. Arriving as standard across all models rear parking sensors are: a Head-up display, AMG Night Package, AMG 19Satellite navigation with 8” colour inch wheels, AMG RIDE-CONTROL sports suspension, touch screen sports exhaust system, panoramic glass sliding Rear inflatable seatbelts sunroof, Burmester® surround sound system and online navigation. In other words, there are lots of toys to play Daytime running lights with and the Mercedes-AMG C 43 Coupe also arrives ® and voice control Bluetooth with heated front seats to keep what’s important warm functionality2 on those cold Canterbury mornings.

The new 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine is part of the BlueDIRECT engine family from MercedesBenz. Technical advances including a modified boost pressure, the AMG engineers to increase the engine’s power output and torque to typical AMG levels. With up to 270 kW and 520 Nm, the V6 engine is high performance. Remember the higher the kilowatt (kW), combined with torque (Nm) and CC rating, the faster your car. Mercedes is quick off the mark with the C class. Combine that with classic Mercedes styling and you always have an appeal in the market. If you like Mercedes, you’re going to love the C Class.
