PROFESSING LOVE FOR THE MODERNIST PAINTER The Christchurch Art Gallery is a time machine; keeper of past, present and future.

his year Metropol has taken an avid and just interest in all it has to offer, with its role as educator and innovator, all the more valuable following the earthquakes. We have had the great fortune to showcase a number of the arts adorning its grandiose walls. We have covered all manner of genres from abstract to fine art. Today’s issue presents an opportunity to celebrate Colin McCahon’s From the Sun Deck: McCahon’s Titirangi. McCahon is one of New Zealand’s indisputable artistic geniuses. Recognised as New Zealand’s foremost painter, his reputation keeps company with the likes of modernist pioneers Rita Angus and Toss Woollaston. Colin McCahon’s shift to Titirangi in 1953 was a watershed moment in the artist’s career, providing the inspiration for him to develop his interest in cubism and abstraction. It was at Titirangi, inspired by the beauty of the Kauri forests, the Manukau Harbour and the Waitakere Ranges that McCahon acted on his passion for cubism and abstraction. With a sundeck at his new

f two letters could sum up our city in 2016, surely they would be ‘RE’ – as in rebirth, rebuild, restore and reopen. On the 16 October, as part of Christchurch’s BECA Heritage Week celebrations, our beloved Arts Centre reopened its doors to the public. Once again music reverberated from the rafters of the Great Hall; Market Square saw time travellers doing an archaeological dig, while others tried their hands at stonemasonry. In the newly landscaped North Quadrangle, people visited the Library to view SCAPE Public Art’s ‘Season 2016’ exhibition, and popped into interactive science museum Rutherford’s Den.

Caroline Fenton, media spokesperson for the Arts Centre, indicates areas on a planning map in the boardroom of the Clock Tower building. “It’s all happening. Garden City growing the

Fruit trees named Squiddy and Polkadot Pirate at Redwood Early Childcare Centre, and two heritage apples and a peach planted by the Gardening Club at Mairehau Primary School, are just a few of the 400 donated edible trees which have been planted in Christchurch over the past month.

The initiative looks to create a network of edible gardens across the city, to enable the access of healthy locally grown food for all. “The aim to get fruit trees into schools and communities is a project that has been very close to my heart for almost three years now.

Having food eaten in the immediate area in which it is grown is great for everyone,’’ said former Christchurch City Councillor Ali Jones. Gardening ambassador Rachel Vogan and local councillor Ali Jones worked with Waimea Nursery in Nelson, to get excess fruit trees down to Christchurch and into the community, with many more donated by the Heritage Fruit Archive, Canterbury Horticultural Society’s Orchards in School programme, and Christchurch City Council’s Harewood nursery.

From their twelfth storey room at the J W Marriot Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles, on Sunday, September 18th, Craig Hutchison of CAS’n’OVA PRODUCTIONS and his life/business partner Ali Robb watched the red carpet being rolled out at The Staples Centre for the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards. “The Staples is next to our hotel, so we got a birds-eye view,” says Craig.

raig and Ali were invited to the Emmys courtesy of L.A. producer Peggy Lane O’Rourke. “I’m co-producing a short film with Peggy called Anne Frank Meets God,” explains Craig. Our chat inevitably turns to celebrity spotting. “There was Margo Martindale who won for Best Drama Guest Actress,” offers Craig, “And Henri Winkler paid tribute to Happy Days creator Garry Marshall who died July, 2016.” Ali recalls Peggy greeting Jon Cryer from Two and a Half Men. “She’d worked with him before, apparently.” Next up for discussion is Ali’s gorgeous gown. “It’s from Kevin Moore, red satin with beaded bodice.” We look at Facebook photos of the couple; Ali looks stunning. “In December we’re

attending the Royal Variety Performance in London, so my dress gets a second outing,” smiles Ali. “It’s crucial to attend these prestigious events – to keep our Kiwi profile out there.” Craig mentions a New Zealand feature film project that he hopes Julian Fellowes, creator of Downton Abbey, may get wind of. Before leaving Los Angeles, they visited The Milky Way restaurant. Craig and Ali gave the owner, a certain Leah Adler Spielberg, a gift from Kaikoura. “She remembered me from my prior visit in April,” says Craig with a twinkle in his eye. “I know her son stops by the restaurant quite often.” Looking ahead, apart from his coproducer role on Anne Frank Meets God, Craig’s excited to be directing some trailers for a couple of shorts being made in Los Angeles. “One of them, in particular, was a very moving story.” Ali reflects on her time at the Emmy Awards, “To experience the experience – that was everything!” Craig agrees, “It was a first for us both, but it certainly won’t be our last!” When it comes to Craig Hutchison – watch this space.

It means “love of life”, but Wilson defined it further: Biophilia is humans’ innate tendency to focus on living things as opposed to inanimate things. FROM SCRATCH 1. From what age did you have ambitions to create something in the league that you have? I embarked on the dream of Cavit&Co 25 years ago. Having previously worked in commercial interior design, and having seen the wonderful ranges of furniture available internationally, I wanted to realise that level of design in New Zealand. 2. What strategy has been involved with your professional journey? Right from the beginning I have strived to obtain exclusive agencies from some of the finest furniture manufacturers in the world. I have been fortunate in retaining great staff and in finding brilliant locations for my showrooms in Auckland, Christchurch and Arrowtown. It is a privilege to have had the loyalty of our clients for all these years and we always strive to launch new collections to keep our clients interested and to offer continually appropriate, timeless design. We ensure we are aware of the essence of sophisticated design that doesn’t date, therefore representing true contemporary, classic design. However, strategising optimal plans for the business plays a huge part in planning and executing a business dream. I spend hours planning our furniture collections and accessories. Keeping the integrity of each brand is paramount and it takes a lot of forward planning to realise that.

Genuine originality in a world saturated with comparable commodities requires a true visionary. 3. What do you think it takes to achieve and retain a premium identity in a global marketplace where ‘exclusivity’ can fall victim to oversaturation? There is no room for doubt when approaching an international supplier for an exclusive agency for their brand. We only work with the best designers and manufacturers in the world and don’t deal with any products that are not ours exclusively in New Zealand. To that

end our designs don’t tend to suffer from oversaturation. Our furniture is made to order, not mass produced and that keeps it a premium product. We specifically avoid offering the ordinary. We look for the best manufacturer available for any given style that we wish to offer to our clients ... Quality is paramount and nobody ever regretted buying quality. 4. What have been some of the most rewarding milestones in Cavit&Co’s journey to date? I think being in business for 25 years this year was a major milestone and affected me far more than I thought it would. Looking back, I was overwhelmed by the number of amazing people I associate with and the ongoing relationships that have endured. Opening our gorgeous showroom in Christchurch was another enormously proud moment.

5. What has governed your decision making process when partnering with brands? I like our showroom to give a sense of a home with global elegance. I always consider all the brands we showcase and don’t embark on new collections unless they work sympathetically with what we already have. Nothing jars in the showrooms. The settings work well with each other and that gives our showrooms a warm and inviting atmosphere. It is so much easier to select furniture and accessories when shown in a realistic environment. 6. Without giving away any secrets… what are some of your ultimate ambitions over the coming years? Well, I do have to keep my secrets

Do you have any particular mentors or inspirations? Barbara Barry who is a designer of global significance has always been a person I look up to. Rachael Rakena - Te la Tangata, 2016 - shows Poutereraki, 2011 with additional video works. Rachael is a digital video artist whose inspiration is drawn from her connections to her Ngāi Tahu, Ngāpuhi and Pakeha ancestry. She has even found a term to describe her method of work – “toi rerehiko” which Rachael describes as “art that employs electricity, movement and light”. SCAPE Public Art has long acknowledged that Ngāi Tahu holds a

Pack like a fashion editor so you can travel lighter and never be caught out no matter where the wind blows.

ow many times have you packed and repacked your suitcase with half of what you started with and still found yourself with nothing that goes together? Good planning is the key to creating the ultimate travel capsule wardrobe, so get organised before you hit the tarmac. Confining your colour palette to no more than three shades means everything will harmonise. Add a splash of colour with jewellery and accessories in a contrasting colour. Lay out each outfit on your bed and swap key pieces around to see what goes with what. A good rule of thumb to go by is if you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wear something with two different pieces, then leave it at home. Layering is the ideal way to ward off frigid in-flight air or the ocean breeze at sunset. Pack a lightweight shawl that can be worn different ways in a neutral colour that can be easily mixed and matched with different outfits. Other excellent layering pieces are tunics and oversized shirts that can be worn with or without jeans or leggings underneath, and shirtdresses that can be slipped on over your swimsuit. Opt for pieces that are multi-functional like a kimono that can be worn as a dress with sandals during the day and wedges at night, over pants for a casual bohemian vibe, or as a cover-up, which co-ordinates with your bikini for elegant poolside chic. Ditch the heels for easy-wear wedges if you yearn for something a little dressier in the evenings. Two pairs of shoes usually suffice; a pair of strappy sandals and a pair of casual trainers for comfort on long walks. Another great comfort tip from high-flying fashionistas is not to pack anything you bought months ago and have only worn once. Instead pack tried and trusted pieces that you know you feel at home in. Planning your outfits ahead of time means you have something to go with everything, and you also save precious time that can be spent out and about enjoying the sights instead of agonising over what to wear in your hotel room.

Their daughters don’t always appreciate how precious it is.” Early diagnosis and intervention will improve symptoms, reduce the chances of developing chronic pain and will minimise potential fertility issues. Mr Dover stresses that the management of endometriosis does not always include surgery, although clearly it does have an important role. He advocates a multidisciplinary approach, one which includes the options of medical and surgical therapies, but also addresses the role of diet, physiotherapy for pelvic floor muscles and education about endometriosis and its lifestyle influences. “We’ve developed a multidisciplinary team at Oxford Women’s Health that includes nutritionists, a physiotherapist with an interest in pelvic pain, a clinical

The murals already grace walls in Queenstown and Dunedin and a third has just been completed in Christchurch. Wellington is next on the agenda and finally the tour will end with Auckland. “I took my niece and my family’s dog to the beach last summer and in a short walk collected two large bags filled with rubbish. I have investigated the impact rubbish has on our coastlines and the knock on effect of single-plastics in particular that are killing our marine and wildlife and the results are awful,” Tess explains of her motivation. “I believe that by painting these large-scale murals around Aotearoa, we will be able to engage with a variety of people that normally wouldn’t think twice about the environment.” To coincide with each mural, Sheerin co-ordinates and supports clean-up events and public awareness campaigns that concentrate on waterways, lakes and coastal areas around New Zealand. Landscapes Captured on Canvas Growing up surrounded by the mountains and open spaces of the South Island, the landscape has long been an inspiration to artist Charles Pickworth.

orking in oils and acrylics on canvas, Charles is a self-taught artist. He began his own artistic journey while working as a gatekeeper for the railways, painting with one arm after contracting polio as a young boy which in turn led to an amputation when he was 20 years old. With permission from his boss, he painted landscapes from photographs during the quiet work hours, displaying his work in their large smoko room. Now a full time painter Charles has refined and developed his techniques over the decades, bringing his own unique style to each painting. “I can paint anywhere – in a crowd of a million, out on location or in my studio,” says Charles, whose paintings have been exhibited in a number of galleries around the South Island. His work often takes him out on location to the dramatic peaks and coastlines of the South Island, creating scenes from the landscape he is drawn to, or that which has special meaning for his customers. This can be anything from a bach in the Marlborough Sounds, a road often travelled, or other subject matters including family pets, animals, boats and planes, and still life. Painting on location has its challenges in the weather, lighting and even sandflies, each painting taking several hours to complete dependent on its size. Some are fully completed on location, while Charles adds the finishing touches to others from his studio, as well as continuing to create pieces from photographs on commission. Charles will be holding an exhibition of selected works in his studio at 11 Blairdon Place in Bishopdale, on Saturday 12 November for one week. He is happy for customers to try a painting out for size in their own home, to discuss creating an original either on location or from photographs, and also offers private tuition for the budding artist. This photo craze has become so popular that photographers are offering cake smash sessions. With plenty of websites offering ideas and tips, why not give it a go for yourself? nd, although their cooking tools may have come a long way, it seems they were on the money when it came to methods, with steaming – one of the oldest ways to cook – surging in popularity as we become increasingly aware of the health and flavour benefits. Steaming cooks food through direct contact between steam (conduction) as well as the movement of the hot vapour through the food (convection), no fat is needed to conduct the heat, making steaming a lower-calorie, low fat cooking method. Steaming cooks and seals in flavour, eliminating

stones, modern technology makes the process a lot less labour intensive and, even if you don’t have an electric steamer, there are still several equally simple options. You can use a covered steaming pot or just a perforated basket that rests above a pot of boiling water; simply wrap foods to be steamed in foil; or you can use Chinese bamboo steamers that stack on top of a wok. Because steaming is gentle, it is perfect for cooking delicate foods—most vegetables, white meat fowl, and fish are all good candidates for steaming. Foods also stay moist from being bathed in water vapour, making steaming perfect for fish and shellfish by not drying out the delicate flesh. Halibut, cod and snapper steam particularly well. Other applications for steaming include Chinese dumplings, and by association other stuffed pastas such as ravioli, small semolina pasta (including couscous) and even biscuit-style dumplings and bread-type doughs, potatoes and other starchy vegetables (corn, carrots, etc). Even fruit and cakes such as Great Britain’s steamed puddings are candidates. So for something different, why not try getting steamy in the kitchen this summer?

Pour the sparkling wine and the icing sugar into the bowl of a stand mixer and start combining on a low setting.

Gently pour in the cream then slowly turn up the speed on the mixer until on a high setting.

250ml Rosé Sparkling Wine 100g icing sugar 500ml single cream 1-2 drops red or pink food colouring • Handful of strawberries (to garnish) • A few sprigs of mint (to garnish)

When fully whipped into the consistency of whipped cream add the food colouring and gently mix in.

Pour the mixture into a 1L container with a good firm lid. Freeze mixture for at least 8 hours. Serve in a champagne coupe topped with diced strawberries and a sprig of mint.

Caramelized Pineapple Carrot Cake Preheat oven to 325°F/160°C. Lightly oil two 8-in/20-cm cake pans, line with baking paper circles and set on a baking tray. Sauté diced pineapple in a large sauté pan with first measure of brown sugar over medium-high heat until caramelized and juices have evaporated. Add ginger and raisins, then cool. Stir in vanilla paste and set aside. Mix oil, sugars and eggs together in a large bowl with a wooden spoon or spatula until combined. Sift flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. Whisk in ground toasted oatmeal to dry ingredients, combining well. Pour egg mixture into dry ingredients, mixing well with spatula. Add grated carrot, then pineapple mixture, combining well. Divide batter equally into cake pans. Bake for 45-50 minutes until cake springs back when softly pressed. Turn out on racks when completely cool.

Cardamom Cream Cheese Frosting Make sure cream cheese and butter are at room temperature, but cool and solid. Sift the sugar, cardamom, and a big pinch of sea salt. Set aside. Beat butter on low speed until it is smooth. Add cream cheese, beating until creamy, then add lime juice and vanilla. Add sugar mixture on low speed until just combined. culinary masterpiece While you’re sipping your morning coffee and reading the paper Christopher and Jenny Gray are probably already out on their property along with pickers, harvesting their asparagus crop – those green spears of deliciousness that we wait all winter for.

“O

ur asparagus season begins on 1 October and goes through to the end of the year,” says Christopher whose family have farmed in the Motukarara area for four generations. “The soil here is high in sodium and eminently suitable for growing asparagus of the very best quality.” The Grays planted their first bed of asparagus in 2003 and maintain their strict quality control from field to grading shed. They are immensely proud of their product and stand behind every single bunch. No rubber band holds these spears together, but instead they are bound up with tape bearing the Grays’ name and address. “The tape says ‘This is our asparagus.’” The asparagus is sold at farmers’ markets in Ohoka, Lyttelton, Riccarton House, Opawa and Lincoln and at the farm gate – 1905 SH 75 (the Christchurch to Akaroa Road). In addition you can find the Grays’ asparagus on the menu at several top Canterbury restaurants, including the award-winning Roots in Lyttelton. While tender, slim asparagus spears are traditionally sought after, Jenny says some people prefer the wider fleshier tips instead. “Every growing season is a little different, but we always have sufficient product to supply the farmers’ markets and to supply the Leader Brand packhouse in Chertsey which sends the asparagus on to supermarkets. BRITISH STYLE ENCAPSULATED When we think about the interiors of houses, we often start by concentrating on the architecture, or on the key pieces of furniture, or the rugs, pictures and lamps, colours, textures and incidental moments. But, as interior designer and author Ben Pentreath explores in his new book, English Houses, a perfectly decorated room without people to occupy it, love it, and live in it is meaningless; and a room without a sense of time and of evolution is as empty as a diary containing entirely blank pages.

fter all, interiors are far less durable than architecture and are subject to the whims of owners, of fashion, and of taste; their moment may be brief - photographs of famous rooms can be far more enduring than the spaces themselves. Longevity is not necessarily the important ingredient. Not a believer in rooms remaining fixed in aspic or the possibility of assembling a room in an instant and for it to feel anything other than like a hotel, Pentreath loves interiors that evolve. While big structural alterations may last a long time, he says itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fun to shake things up, to move things around, and to make space for a new picture or pieces of furniture from the junk auction that you have no room for, but couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t live without. As these changes happen over time,

it allows for mistakes and experiments, for shifts in mind or mood, and all of this is what makes life interesting! Ben encourages his clients to take things slowly; to first bring in the big pieces, which take care and thought, but then let the little touches of life evolve and mature more gently. While good decoration is a matter of opinion and not of fact, Ben believes his role as decorator, is as a collaborator, giving clients the confidence and ability to explore their own ideas. In a world saturated by images, with so many choices and ideas, the homes showcased in English Houses best exemplify a way of putting rooms together that reflects an unhurried and personal approach, which Pentreath believes to be the true defining characteristic of the finest English interiors.

Yet there is a reluctance to see the anchor projects advance; the very things that will generate what is missing from our city and secure Christchurch a strong financial and cultural future. One of the most polarising major construction projects is the rugby stadium, with many questioning the amount that is to be spent, and whether this should, and could, be better utilised elsewhere. With a temporary stadium currently serving the city reasonably well

To be an international city, we need to be able to host large scale events. We need to have the facility to attract and host activities. To do this we need to ensure we are investing in the financial and cultural future of the city; the Convention Centre is not going to sustain Christchurch on its own.

Currently the debate around the stadium has become a political hot potato, with both central and local government avoiding a commitment around when and how. Lancaster Park, Jade Stadium, AMI Stadium - however you refer to it - long endeared itself as an open space within Christchurch with its ability to host large scale international events and activities. Much more than simply a rugby stadium, it was where international musicians entertained us, where potatoes were grown to help feed the city during World War One

and it offered a stage for prayer, with Pope John Paul II holding a public mass in the oval in 1986. Pre-quake we were passionate about our stadium. I still recall the public outrage when the naming rights for it were sold to a corporate; we believed we were losing something important to our city. What started as a swampy farmland, with little vision, became a cornerstone of the city; a cultural and sporting location with historical, cultural and economic significance. Just because we have earmarked a piece of land for a future stadium, doesn’t mean that it instantly has to be that. We should be putting up goal posts, marking out a pitch and letting kids kick a ball. We need to let it earn its place within our hearts. As we learn to utilise this open space and develop an attachment, we can then transform it into something else. We would never have had a stadium at Lancaster Park had it not been activated for its purpose. When we build a new home, we learn how to occupy it. We develop an appreciation and love for it through interaction. We need to stop focusing on a stadium and start using the land – rather than leaving it as a vacant wasteland to be debated in council chambers. www.caarc.co.nz

The convertible to end all convertibles

I love convertibles. My first was a Triumph Herald and there are many fun memories that go hand-in-hand with that car.

ast forward to 2016 and check out the Holden Cascada; it has all the kit you would ever need for a sporty convertible. We’re talking 20-inch alloy wheels, daytime running lights, rear-view camera, rain sensing wipers and sports front seats - all in a four-seater. Being able to retract the fabric roof while on the move (a trick that can be completed in 17 seconds and at speeds of up to 50km/h) is a big plus too. This is a feature missing from the likes of even the all-new Ford Mustang Convertible. If you’re dropping the top and heading to a Waipara Winery, you want something with a bit of style but power to boot. Featuring a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder, turbopetrol engine (the one and only available to the Cascada), producing a maximum torque of 260Nm at 1,650rpm, the Cascada is exceptionally quiet and comfortable on smooth roads. The beauty is, it looks good too; top

up, or top down, with a strong muscular stance and an upward sweeping belt line that draws your eyes to the classy rear end. Need I say more? The soft leather seats are comfortable, being both heated and ventilated; I’m sure this feature will make a hot summer’s day drive more enjoyable. With a leather stitched dash, chrome-look details and heated leather steering wheel, the model prides itself on the small details too. With the full suite of modern technology such as the 7.0-inch MyLink display screen, you’ll find the system is home to one of the better navigation units around. Aspects of the car outdo its competitors and it’s well price pointed at $62,995 - $10,000 to $20,000 cheaper than similar models in the market. When I picked up the Volkswagen Amarok for its test drive, my first thoughts were “Yeeeee haaa”.
