On the Cover Maria Vazquez

enrolled in the Barbering Program at Metro Tech when she saw the success it created for her friends who had their barbering license. “It was cool to see that they were able to create their own hours, work from home or rent a chair in a shop, and make good money while doing so,” Vazquez said. “I thought that something like that would be perfect for me.” When Maria enrolled in the Barbering Program, she quickly realized that the program teaches students about much more than cutting hair. “There’s a lot of things that I didn’t know I would learn in this program,” Vazquez said. “I didn’t know we would learn anatomy, physiology or electricity. I realized there was more to cutting hair than I thought.” Maria said her favorite part of the Barbering Program is gaining hands-on experience through the various opportunities for community service. She also said taking walk-ins is a joy of hers, now that she is becoming more confident in her craft. “Cutting hair, for me, was challenging at first,” Vazquez said. “Now that I have strengthened my skills, I am a lot more passionate about it.”

Metro Tech Barbering STUDENTS GIVE BACK The 1500-hour Barbering Program equips students with the knowledge and skills to receive their License from the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. The curriculum includes instructions of basic manipulative skills on shaving, haircutting, styling, advanced barbering services as well as the business, science and the proper safety procedures of barbering through hands-on training and real client relationships. Instructor of Barbering, Lamar Rouce, has secured opportunities that allow the students to gain hands-on training by partnering with local non-profit organizations such as The Boys and Girls Club of Northeast OKC, The Salvation Army, Harvest Life Church, The Bridge Community Center and more. “Community engagement is a big part of our program,” Rouce said. “By partnering with non-profits, the students are able to practice on real clients while ensuring we give back to our community.” Since the beginning of the partnership with The Salvation Army, the Metro Tech Barbering Program has successfully given more than 2,000 free haircuts to those in need.

Metro Tech Prepares Students with Disabilities for Workforce Michael Major is a former Metro Tech Project Search Student who now works at the Oklahoma Office of Management and Enterprise Services (OMES) as an Asset Management Assistant. After Michael graduated high school from Millwood, he enrolled in Metro Tech’s Project Search Program, a post-secondary adult workforce program that prepares individuals with disabilities for successful employment. Project Search places enrollees at three internships across the Downtown Oklahoma City area, and OMES was Michael’s third internship. Officials at OMES were so impressed by Michael’s work ethic that they chose to hire him full-time upon his completion of the Project Search Program. “He has exceeded my expectations,” said OMES Asset Management Specialist Raymond Brown,

who serves as Michael’s supervisor. “He never says no, and he never complains. He stays busy.” Michael’s Father, Marcus Major, said the decision to enroll Michael in Project Search was critical to ensuring he had options for the next step in his life. “When I heard about Project Search and spoke with Kennell, [Project Search Coordinator] we felt like it was the best option for him,” Marcus Major said. “Even with him being on the spectrum, I knew he was capable of great things and Project Search brought that out of him by showing him the skills that he needed to find a career.” If you or someone you know has a young adult capable of great things like Michael, please contact our Project Search Coordinator Kennell Lee at 405-595-4074 or email kennell.lee@metrotech.edu.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Elizabeth Tirado Metro Tech Accounting Clerk Graduate

I want to work as an Accountant for an organization that makes a positive difference in the community.

Elizabeth Tirado enrolled in the 18-month Accounting Clerk Course in the fall of her senior year at Capitol Hill High School. After graduating in the spring of 2022, Elizabeth returned to Metro Tech as an adult student to finish the course. “My teacher encouraged me to finish the program even if I did graduate, since it was still free,” Tirado said. Currently, Elizabeth works as a Host at The Jones Assembly but has big plans for her future. Once Elizabeth finishes the Accounting Clerk Course, she will then enroll in the Accounting Associate Course. From there, Elizabeth will be equipped to earn her certifications in Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable and MS Excel Specialist and will then take the Accounting Test. From there, Elizabeth plans to further pursue a successful career as an accountant, “I want to work as an Accountant for an organization that makes a positive difference in the community,” Tirado said. Before she can finish her coursework, Elizabeth will complete a 30-hour banking and financial industry internship. Accounting Services Teacher, Brenda Anderson, says that Accounting students like Elizabeth get the opportunity to complete their internships

with the Tinker Federal Credit Union (TFCU) branch located in the Metro Technology Centers Information Technology Center that will provide possibilities for immediate employment with the organization upon receiving her certifications. Not only does the internship with TFCU give students hands-on experience within a functioning banking institution, but Branch Manager, Israel Estrada says that he strives to also equip students with soft skills needed to obtain any and all employment. “I work with the students on strengthening their interview skills and forming a resume as well,” Estrada said. “While interning here, the students are treated as real employees. They receive their own email and complete customer transactions while I shadow them, and they watch me as well.” Through one-on-one training, the internship with TFCU is not only open to Accounting students but also any Metro Tech student who may need to complete community hours as a requirement of their program. Once they complete the program, students will have the opportunity to apply and interview for a position at any TCFU branch in the Oklahoma City area.

Cooking kept me motivated and happy.

Breea Highfill is a graduate of the Culinary Arts Program and is now a baker at Twisted Tree Baking Company in Edmond. Breea enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program after deciding to take a semester break from college. “That was a tough time for me,” Highfill said. “Cooking kept me motivated and happy.” “My favorite thing about Culinary Arts was getting the opportunity to be creative, trying new foods and meeting so many talented people. Like my teacher, Ms. Chaya Pennington” Highfill said.

During her time at Metro Tech, Breea placed first at the FCCLA state Culinary Arts competition, first at FCCLA Nationals and third at SkillsUSA Nationals. She was also a Metro Tech Student of The Year! In her role at the Twisted Tree Baking Company, Breea helps handcraft 6 different types of bread and 19 different pastries and says that her time in the Metro Tech Culinary Arts Program prepared her for all aspects of working in the industry.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Jocelyn Marquez Metro Tech Biomedical Sciences Academy Graduate

Jocelyn Marquez enrolled in the Biomedical Sciences program at Metro Tech’s STEM Academy in 2009, just one year after the program was established. Now, Jocelyn works for Paycom as a Human Capitol Manager Team Leader. Although she got her start in Bio-Med, Jocelyn quickly took a liking to the AP mathematics classes offered in the program. “The ability to take AP math classes and the teachers are really what kept me coming to the program” Marquez said. “However, I also learned critical soft skills such as time management, the ability to work under pressure and critical thinking skills. Learning those things eased my transition into college and the workforce.”

During her time at Metro Tech, Jocelyn was also the HOSA Future Healthcare Professionals Chapter President, a member of the National Technical Honor Society and competed with the Metro Tech Parliamentary team. “There hasn’t been a single day that I haven’t been thankful for my experience at Metro Tech,” Marquez said. “I still use the same skills I learned at Metro Tech in my job every day.” Jocelyn’s former teachers, Brian Leaver and Karen Upton, say that she is a success story that they are proud to share. “When she got here, she didn’t really know what she wanted to do, she just knew she wanted to be at STEM, but sometimes that’s part of it.” Leaver said. “CareerTech is about finding your passion.”
