S tudentSPOTLIGHT Alessandro Pecina Drafting Technician

Alessandro Pecina is a Design Technician at Guernsey, where he works with architects and engineers on renovation and construction projects. Alessandro enrolled in Metro Tech’s drafting program during high school, and then completed the year-long Architectural CAD Technician program after graduation. “Metro Tech really has served me well,” said Pecina. “Mr. Powers was my instructor for all three years and was also like a counselor to me. Pecina said, he did not know much about technology or computer software programs before he enrolled at Metro Tech. “I jumped right in, learned AutoCAD, and then went on to Revit®, which puts architectural drawings into 3D. Knowing that software is the biggest reason why I was offered a position with Guernsey.” At Guernsey, Pecina collaborates with electrical, structural, and mechanical engineers. With their renovation work, communication is necessary between the different disciplines. His day consists of reviewing blue prints, recreating them into a 3D model and then verifying the structural components. “For example, checking to see if the walls line up, if the ceiling heights need to be adjusted. Sometimes, I have to put a project aside because an architect brings me a mark-up and asks me to fix it by a certain deadline. It’s challenging when I have to go into the software and figure out where I went wrong. But it’s very rewarding when I figure out the problem and get to see the end product.” Pecina would like to continue his education to become an architect and eventually start his own residential contracting business.
