On the Cover Kelvin Thomas got his start in aircraft maintenance after serving ten years in the U.S. Army as a M1 Abrams tank mechanic, where he traveled to various European countries, such as Germany, Lithuania and Latvia. His knowledge of the turbine engine allowed him to get a job as a contract aircraft mechanic. However, he quickly discovered a need and desire to further his education in aviation maintenance. “It brought me a lot of joy and excitement knowing that the plane in the air was the same plane I got to work on in the shop,” he said. “So I decided to pursue my Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic’s license.” After he graduates, Kelvin plans to transition into a full-time position with a local aviation company.
It brings me a lot of joy and excitement knowing that the plane in the air is the same plane I get to work on in the shop. - Kelvin Thomas Aircraft Maintenance Tech

Three Generations:
HOW AN ALUMNA INSPIRED HER DAUGHTER AND GRANDDAUGHTER TO ENROLL AT METRO TECH When Roseitta Floyd graduated from the Graphic Design program in 2011, she started her own business designing websites. Little did she know that the success that came from her postsecondary education would inspire her daughter and granddaughter to pursue their dreams at Metro Tech as well. “If it were not for my instructors and the support of Metro Tech, I truly believe I would not be where I am today,” Roseitta said. “I still use so much of what I learned at Metro Tech every single day in my practice, and I have passed down what I’ve learned to my children and grandchildren as well.” Enrolled at the Aviation Campus, Roseitta’s daughter, Kayla Murria, said she enrolled at Metro Tech to earn her Aviation Maintenance Technician license and pursue a career as an aircraft mechanic.
“I always knew that Metro Tech was a great school because of my mom’s success,” Kayla said. “Of course, when I told her I wanted to be an aircraft mechanic, she told me that I absolutely had to choose Metro Tech.” While her Grandmother Roseitta is running her businesses and her Aunt Kayla is working on turbine engines, Sydney Gordon, a senior at Santa Fe South High School, is pursuing an education in Medical Coding at the Health Careers Center. “Originally, I was not interested in pursuing any form of higher education,” Sydney said. “I changed my mind when a recruiter from Metro Tech came to my school to talk to us about their different programs and the benefits of attending them.” Although Sydney’s experience with the Metro Tech recruitment team led her to make the final decision to attend, her grandmother’s legacy has always been her inspiration. “My grandma was student of the month so many times,” Sydney said. “She still has the plaques hanging up in her house.” As the Spring semester approaches, Roseitta said she looks forward to celebrating her daughter and granddaughter as they complete their programs and earn their certifications. “In May of 2024, I’ll get to watch as my daughter and granddaughter graduate on the same stage and from the same CareerTech that helped me pursue my dreams all those years ago,” she said. “For that, I am so honored and proud.”

Student Feature Law Enforcement Cadet Evelin RamirezLopez said she enrolled in the program at the South Bryant Campus to help diversify the police force in more ways than one. “It’s been said that being a law enforcement officer is a man’s job, but I know I can make a difference as a woman and a Latina,” she said. After Evelin graduates, she said she plans to apply for the Oklahoma City Police Academy but wants to work as a 911 dispatcher before she transitions into the role of an officer. As an officer, she says her primary focus will be educating her community on the importance of law enforcement and keeping them safe. “Where I live, the parks are empty because families don’t feel safe enough to let their children play outside,” she said. “Kids should only have to worry about being kids. As an officer, I want to help them feel safe enough to do that.”
