MUSIC CAN HEAL Relaxation, beautiful memories, joy, and so many more feelings are what music offers to us! We all listen to music, some more in our everyday lives, some less! It is a fact that music has the ability to make everything better because it often acts as a medicine by relieving our pain or making us feel excited, as it often brings sweet memories back. Therefore, listening to our favorite songs is very beneficial to our health.
Depending on our mood, we seek the appropriate songs to listen to, in order to feel joy, regret or nostalgia or even anger and turn it into something pleasant. Through music we fall in love, we reminisce, and to sum it all up we develop a better emotional world. While listening to the lyrics of a song, we picture images of our own life, our own problems and our own joys. We identify with them and feel that they were written for us. That is why music is so magical. Even by listening to a simple melody without lyrics, we can gather our dreams, our desires and dream of a better tomorrow. Music’s rhythm helps us to find our inner balance and get over any negative feelings or thoughts! That is why, many times, songs can break us out either in tears or make us dance. Music as a school subject, can play a major role in the development of students’ inner worlds, as they are given the chance to use their minds and imagination in a creative way. Through creativity children are able to develop great self-confidence as they trust themselves to complete important and unique tasks. Evangelos Rizos

COOL BRAINS BEDŘICH SMETANA (1824–1884) He was a Czech composer known especially for his work The Vltava. Even as a child you can find out very well what the composer wants to express with his music. WINDOW TO SCHOOL
TRIKALA (Greece) Music is strongly connected with Greek cultural background. As a lesson it is taught from 1st grade of primary school to the last grade of secondary school (9th grade). It is one of the most loved lessons and there is a special room arranged just for music lessons in every school. The younger is the student, the easier is the lesson. In the lower grades the lesson is basically connected with the preparation for concerts, which usually take place in National Days, at Christmas and before summer holidays. The music teacher leads 6
the choir in concerts. In higher grades students are taught the history of global music and they get in touch with some instruments, sometimes used in concerts. At our school classes from 7th to 9th grade have music lessons once a week, and if there’s a concert soon, they get prepared for it , otherwise they learn how to play some specific instruments like violin or guitar, or they do theory lessons. At this school I have been teaching Music over 20 years and it is great to feel that all activities related to music education develop but above all enjoy pupils. During our Music lessons pupils sing in the first place. They sing also the canon and also in double voice. Some pupils are not good singers they rather grumble as bears but desire and good will are worth. Pupils often use Orff’s instruments and provide accompaniment for their singing. They also learn the basic steps of some dances and it’s really fun. They also learn about musical terminology and life of important composers. Pupils also present their ideas of the music they are interested in. These lessons are instructive not only for their classmates but also for me. At least I have a constant insight into what is IN. Within classes, we sometimes organize karaoke singing competitions. All the kids have the opportunity to show off their talents. Those who discover musical talent inside themselves then continue like singers or dancers in musicals or even appear on television screens. This is the way we can meet our former pupil Michaela Sejnová, who is reaping success in the field of acting. Ilona Fenclová

SANT BOI DE LLOBREGAT (Spain) Each November 22 the teachers and children of Barrufet School celebrate the day of Music. As this year the school project is about The Sea, we decided to work on The Habaneras in all the subjects during this special day. Habaneras are songs about the sea and the sailors. A characteristic instrument of the Habaneras is the accordion. In the morning a musician explained the story of the instrument and played it. In the afternoon, a musical group of Habaneras (a singer, a guitar player and an accordion player) made us sing and dance with the music. We had a fantastic day and enjoyed the music. Aurora Barba 7
