E 18 near Sunsmyra NORWAY – 1987/88

Problem Low load-bearing subsoil; Increase of the road height by 2.5 m to protect against flooding –› buoyancy resistant solution required.

Cubic Area: 5,000 m3. Load: No data.

Composition Road bed 60 cm total thickness. Base Non-woven textile covering; Leca®, in 3 layers, total thickness 2.5 m; Geotextile as separating membrane; Pre-loading with 1.5 m crushed rock. Subsoil 4-5 m peat; 10 m cohesive soils with soft consistency; Load-bearing rock at depth of 15-18 m; Naturally high water levels (buoyancy problem).

Building method 1. Removal of a thin layer of peat; 2. Application of the 3 Leca® layers on geotextile; 3. Compaction; 4. Non-woven textile covering; 5. Application of pre-load of 1.5 m crushed rock; 6. Removal of the rock layer after 16 months (50 cm settlement); 7. Construction of the road superstructure.
