E47 highway DENMARK
The E47 highway passes “Guldborg Sund” between the islands Lolland and Falster in the South of Denmark. In the past the traffic had to pass a small bridge in Guldborg, but in 1988 a tunnel was constructed south of Guldborg, and the new E47 was then lead through the tunnel. To reduce the load on the tunnel’s ends, Leca® fillings were used instead of conventional gravel. The use of up
to 3 meter Leca® filling reduced the dimension of the concrete structure and the use of reinforcement. The benefit of thinking “lightweight“, at an early state of the project, was obvious. The geotechnical solution was designed by Cristiani & Nielsen A/S and the contractors were Armton A/S and Pihl & søn A/S. A total of 1100 m3 Leca® 10–20mm was used.
