M a xi t LWA is stabl e option for major Por t Sc h em e DIFFICULT ground conditions on the approach to a new tunnel serving the Port of Dublin have been overcome using a lightweight solution from maxit. Around 5,000 m続 of maxit LWA lightweight aggregate were used to form a new one metre high embankment for the spur road on the approach to Dublin Port Tunnel.
Consulting engineers Mott Macdonald, of Glasgow, specified the material in order to guard against excessive settlement where the new road passes over an area of former waste ground with poor loadbearing capacity. Maxit LWA in 10-20 mm grade was delivered by ship to the port of Dundalk for call off by main contractor Mowlem. Due to the light weight of maxit LWA, it was possible to use large capacity articulated tippers to deliver 55 m続 loads to the site in Dublin. Final placement was carried out using

a tracked excavator with compaction completed by three passes of the same plant. By specifying maxit LWA -- which is 75% lighter than the equivalent volume of traditional crushed fill -- the additional weight of the new embankment on the existing ground was minimised. By being able to place the maxit LWA in one metre compaction layers, the considerable reduction in programme time was an added benefit
