INTRODUCTION Veracruz, the port of entry of the European culture in the Americas. Internationally known for the music of Agustín Lara, Veracruz is appreciated nationally for its traditional hospitality and delicious coastal cuisine. Its name was conceived the day Hernán Cortes disembarked on a holy Friday known as Vera Cruz, which means the “True Cross” and because of the richness of the region, the place was named “Villa Rica de la Veracruz” (Rich Villa of the True Cross).

The port of Veracruz is representative of old traditions, its old buildings don’t hide the European influence that reminds us that this was one of the first colonial cities on the new continent. A walk through the arcade, and along the jetty takes us closer to the warmth of the people of this port. The music is an essential element of the lives of the Veracruz people, the marimba, the danzones and the folkdances are one more of the many attractions to be found in the Center of Veracruz.

Boca Del Río is a municipality that neighbors on the Port of Veracruz. It got its name (Río Banderas) from the Spanish because the indigenous people received them with white flags because they thought that the Spanish were envoys of “Quetzalcóatl”. Later it was called Boca del Río for the first time in 1609 by the Dominican Bishop Alonzo de la Mota y Escobar, because it is on the left bank of the mouth of the Jamapa River. On January 24 1988 it was elevated to the status of City.

LOCATING VERACRUZ The state of Veracruz is located in the eastern section of Mexico, along the tropical coast of the Gulf of Mexico. At 72,815 km2 , it’s the tenth largest state in the Republic. Its coast extends from the Panuco River to the city of Coatzalcoalcos, 745 kilometers of coast line. It borders with the states of Tabasco to the southeast, San Luis Potosi, Hidalgo and Puebla to the west, Oaxaca and Chiapas to the south and Tamaulipas to the north.

Manuel Payno, narra en su libro: “Un viaje a Veracruz en el Invierno de 1843” haber visitado el Café del Portal. Según el historiador Antonio Salazar Páez, en 1864 Maximiliano y Carlota visitaron este café. Varias veces se cerró y se reabrió. Se dice que en 1881 Don Manuel González, fundó de nueva cuenta una dulcería y después repostería, centro de reunión, que posteriormente vendió a Don José Fernández “Don Pepe”, oriundo de Cantabria, España, residente en Córdoba, Ver., con oficio de panadero, quien se traslada a vivir en el Puerto, junto con su esposa, e inicia la etapa más importante de la vida de este lugar, también la más difícil, convirtiendo esta esquina por la limpieza, higiene, el magnífico servicio y delicias culinarias y de repostería, en un sitio obligado de paso para los visitantes de todas partes del mundo y el lugar acostumbrado para las tertulias diarias y reuniones de los veracruzanos. Personajes de la política, intelectuales, religiosos, artistas, han acudido desde entonces. Hoy orgullosamente una tercera generación cuida esta tradición única de su abuelo, dando honor, a quien con su ejemplo, perseverancia, amor y trabajo por Ve r a c r u z , h o n o r m e re c e.

The history of the Gran Cafe del Portal begins in 1824, when Caldevilla, a Cuban who spent years searching the pirate Lorenzillo’s treasure; and his wife established a candy store on the corner of Principal street, today Independencia street, and Gutierrez Zamora street; right across the Asuncion Parish. It later became a refreshment shop, and afterwards, a coffee shop. In his book “A Trip To Veracruz During The Winter Of 1843” Manuel Payno recounts having visited the Cafe del Portal. According to the historian Antonio Salazar Paez, the Archdukes Maximilian and Charlotte visited the coffee shop. It closed and re-opened several times. It has been said that in 1881, Don Manuel Gonzalez established a candy store again, and then a bakery, and a social centre afterwards. Don Jose Fernandez, “Don Pepe” acquired the establishment. He was Spaniard born in Cantabria and resided in Cordoba, Veracruz. He was a baker and moved to the Port with his wife. It was then when the most important stage in the life of the establishment began, though also the most difficult. It became “a must” for the visitors for its cleanness, its hygiene, its magnificent service, and culinary and bakery delights. It was the customary place for social gatherings amongst the Veracruzanos. Celebrities from politics, as well as intellectuals, religious, and artists have come since then. Today, a third generation proudly takes care of this unique tradition, honoring him, who with his example, perseverance, love, and work for Veracruz, deserves such honor.

San Juan de Ulúa La historia de este edificio va unida a la de Veracruz, ya que desde sus inicios ha sido protagonista de muchos sucesos importantes. Desde la llegada de los españoles en 1518, el islote fue nombrado por Juan de Grijalva quien arribó en el día de San Juan Bautista, de allí surge el origen del nombre. Su construcción se realizó entre los siglos XVI y XVIII utilizando en su mayoría piedra mucara de los arrecifes al carecer de piedras en la región.

SAN JUAN DE ULUA FORT The history of this building is linked to the history of Veracruz, because from its beginnings it has been a player in many important events. From the arrival of the Spanish in 1518, the island was named by Juan Girjalva who arrived on the day of Saint John the Baptist, thus the origin of its name. The construction of the building was carried out in the 16th. and 18th centuries, for the most part using corral rocks from the surrounding reefs because of a lack of stone in the region. Over the years its function of protecting fort became combined with that of troop barracks, presidential palace and prison for personalities such as the legendary Chucho el Roto and important figures of Mexican history such as Friar Servando Teresa de Mier and Mariano Abasolo. A visit to this colonial fort takes us back in time and allows us to understand a little about the history of this beautiful port. Open from 9:00 to 4:30, closed Mondays / admission fee. Sunday free entrance. 20

En el transcurso del tiempo su función de Fuerte Protector fue combinado con cuartel de tropas, palacio presidencial y prisión de personajes como el legendario Chuco el Roto y personajes de la historia de México como Fray Servando Teresa de Mier y Mariano Abasolo. Su visita nos regresa en el tiempo y nos permite comprender un poco la historia de este bello puerto. Abierto de 9:00 - 4:30 , Cierra el Lunes Admisión con costo / Domingos Entrada Libre.

Cempoala Su nombre proviene del Nahuatl que quiere decir “Veinte Aguas” ya que se encuentra rodeado por los ríos de la región, es uno de los sitios arqueológicos más importantes del estado; cuenta con varios edificios que aún hoy en día irradian una imponente belleza ( Templo Mayor, Templo de las Chimeneas, Circulo de Gladiadores, Templo de las Caritas, Templo del Dios Viento, Templo de la Cruz ). El complejo está rodeado por verdes prados y cocotales que dan al lugar ese misticismo de magnitud que nos evoca a los tiempos en que funcionaba como segunda capital del imperio Totonaca, antes de ser dominada por los Aztecas. Se localiza a 43 Kms. del Puerto de Veracruz yendo hacia el norte. Al pasar la desviación a Cardel y continuando sobre la autopista se encuentra una desviación hacia Tampico, su horario de visita es de 8 a 5:30 p.m.

Its name comes from the Náhuatl language and means “Twenty Waters” because it is surrounded by the rivers of the region, it is one of the most important archeological sites in the state. It consists in various buildings that still radiate an imposing beauty today (the Major Temple, The temple of the Chimneys, the Gladiator Circle, the Temple of the Faces, Temple of the Wind God, Temple of the Cross). This complex is surrounded by green pastures and coconut palms that give the place a feeling of mystery that it evokes times when it functioned as a second capitol for the Totonaca Empire, before it was dominated by the Aztecs. It is located 43 kms. From the Port of Veracruz heading to the north. Passing the Cardel turnoff and continuing on the superhighway to the turnoff to Tampico, its schedule is fro 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 21

La Antigua Fue el segundo asentamiento de la Villa Rica de la Veracruz, se localiza a 25 Kms. al norte del Puerto por la autopista a Xalapa, pasando la caseta de cobro doblando hacia la izquierda. Dentro de sus recintos más importantes se encuentra la casa de Hernán Cortés, rodeada por grandes árboles y raíces que le dan un toque místico al lugar, el cual aún cuenta con restos de lo que algún día fueron parte de la estructura original, su cuarto, el pozo, el patio central y lo que alguna vez fue el horno de pan, son algunos de los elementos de la casa que podemos ver; todo está cubierto por la sombra de las palmeras y árboles que forman parte de la historia de esta antigua casa colonial.
