about handcrafts

MARACAS are percussion musical instruments hold by their handles, usually in pairs, and shaken. Traditional maracas consist of hollow balls made from dried gourd or coconut shell, filled with seeds or dried beans and hand-painted on top. Maracas could be a perfect Mexican party favor for your guests. PAPEL AMATE, the papyrus of Mayas and Aztecas, is Mexico’s indigenous paper, produced using a centuries-old method of making paper from tree bark. It was used for religious purposes, and therefore Spanish conquistadores outlawed it. Luckily the technique survived, and artisanal, decorative papel amate objects are still produced today and can be used for a beautiful wedding invitation or table decor.

edliettoterr s DEAR READERS, I have so many things to say that it’s hard for me to know where to begin! And so I’ll start by saying how moved I am to be writing these lines, and the first thing I want to share is that the more I see of Mexico, the more I love it, because every day I’m surprised to discover something new and unexpected. As I’m discovering new things, I’m inspired by a feeling that captivates me. I view Mexico as an exotic destination full of sensuality and color, where at the same time every corner, every smile, every flavor, every artist is a reflection of the country’s past and heritage. All of this makes Mexico a fascinating place for whatever style of wedding, honeymoon or romantic getaway you may choose: above all, those the two of you discover for yourselves, which can be very elegant without losing the flavor of Mexico. Because you’ll be able to create something that’s different from what everyone else is doing, and, most of all, something that will be very joyful and fun. For this reason and much more, the pages of this magazine will lead you to discover the Mexico that I consider to be the perfect destination for romance. I’m sure that this issue will make you feel just like I do. And so, welcome to Mexico!

AFFECTIONATELY,

Caty Gomez

TRADITIONS

MAYAN WEDDING CEREMONY
A ritual that invokes all the energy of the universe to bless the new couple and their new path in life as husband and wife. The seven directions are called upon: father cosmos, mother earth, the four winds and the center of our own hearts, the core of our lives. Flowers in traditional Mayan colors are used in harmony with the ceremony. Copal incense, water and musicial instruments attract the divine energy of the universe. The guests stand in a circle with the bride and groom in the center, near the altar, where the energy of the ceremony is concentrated. SPIRITUAL WEDDING CEREMONY A ritual in which the couple is presented to the spiritual energy of the four points of the compass.

They are

asked to call for the protection and blessing of Mother Earth (Ixchel) from the center of the galaxy (Hunab Ku) and that of the four elements of the universe, which lead us through light and unconditional love to a spiritual union. Surrounded by copal incense and flower petals representing the four cosmic directions, the couple is “bathed” in these elements. This ritual symbolizes the blessing of each point of the compass, guiding the couple to the center of their hearts to take their vows in front of the sacred fire that represents the spiritual hearts joined in union.

Every corner of this architectural gem is an ideal setting for capturing extraordinary images

This location was founded in the 17th century and has witnessed the passing of such major historical periods as the Prehispanic and Colonial eras. Currently it stretches over 11 thousand hectares of land and serves as a tourist stop and private Museum. Aniela is perfectly aware of this, that’s why she chose this spot for holding the Trash the Dress photo session for María Fernanda and Fernando. Direct from Monterrey, the couple lets us get to know them better and tells us what their experience at this magical place was like.

HOW DID FERNANDO GIVE YOU YOUR ENGAGEMENT RING? He gave it to me in Cancún, at the same place, where he asked me to be his girlfriend. HOW LONG DID YOU DATE BEFORE YOU GOT ENGAGED? One year and eleven months.

ABOUT YOUR WEDDING WHEN DID YOU GET MARRIED? Our wedding was on February 15, 2014

WHERE DID YOU HOLD YOUR WEDDING? Our wedding was just like I had dreamed it would be. I always imagined getting married at a Spectacular and Enchanting Hacienda with a bit of magic and that’s just how it was. We both went to visit Mérida and loved it. From there we visited the best Haciendas in town and the last one we saw was the one we chose for making our fairy tale wedding come true. The name of the hacienda is San Pedro Ochil. We chose it because it’s a Magical and Enchanting Hacienda. From the moment you enter, you fall in love with the stores and craft workshops. Plus it has these huge palm trees that go up to the Amphitheater of the cenote and take you to a spectacular spot for a reception. We loved the Machinery Room and the Arab-style arches. Everything creates a magical and elegant atmosphere.

ABOUT THE TRASH THE DRESS SHOOT WHERE DID YOU HOLD THE TRASH THE DRESS PHOTO SHOOT? The TTD was at the Hacienda Yaxcopoil. WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS SPOT? It’s a Beautiful Place. It’s a private Hacienda considered one of the most important in the Yucatán. It has incredible Settings and our Photographer suggested it to us.

Ma.Fernanda &Fernando

WHAT WAS YOUR IMPRESSION WHEN YOU GOT THERE? What beautiful places there are in Mexico! It’s a wonderful country. WHAT WAS ANIELA LIKE AS A PHOTOGRAPHER? Aniela has a marvellous, magic touch for taking pictures. The fact is that at first, we simply followed her instructions but little by little, she made us start to relax and the results were incredible. The photos turned out to be spectacular. WAS THERE ANY PARTICULAR MOMENT OR INTERESTING ASPECT ABOUT THE SESSION? On the day of the wedding… there were several but the one that most surprised us was when our dear photographer took a fall early in the session, when she was trying to take a shot of some friends and had climbed onto a wall to get it. She injured her ankle but didn’t say that it hurt. The next day, when she went to the hospital, was when we learned about her injury. We respect her professionalism.

BREATHTAKING NATURE AND MYSTICAL MAYAN CULTURE

Welcome to Chiapas, one of the most beautiful places in Mexico and its most southernmost state, blessed with breathtaking nature, rich Mayan heritage and colonial towns. Let your honeymoon be unforgettable! PICTURE: CANON DEL SUMIDERO

Chiapas The state is home to the second-largest indigenous population in the country, and Mayan traditions are alive everywhere you go. Chiapas didn’t become part of Mexico until 1824, and a strong indigenous identity remains because the Maya population is one of the largest in Mexico, still using about a half dozen Maya languages and dressing in a traditional way. Chiapas made worldwide history during the 1994 Zapatista uprising, when hundreds of thousands of people rose up against the Mexican government. Today, the diversity of Chiapas means bird-rich tropical rainforest and jungle, full of hidden waterfalls, cooler high-altitude pine forests and a Pacific coastline where sea turtles nest. Mayan ruins, including some of the best archaeological sites in Mexico, are dispersed in the lush, misty jungle. This means countless amazing opportunities for outdoor activities, exploration and romantic time together.

THE SUMPTUOUS

SENSUALITY OF

HéctorTerrones’ d

designs THE HISTORY OF MEXICAN FASHION CAN NOT BE TOLD WITHOUT MENTIONING HÉCTOR TERRONES. This Mexico City native, who has spent over 20 years designing dresses and accessories (shoes and jewelry) is, unquestionably, one of the most creative artists who has made a name for Mexican fashion around the world. Héctor’s designs are very special, unique and always bear the “Terrones” stamp, which makes them different from other dresses, with their maximalist style and references to other eras. In fact, his dresses with corsets are his signature. Nobody else can match his mastery of the art of corsetry.

Mexico’s most prominent and beautiful women seek him out for advice. They’ve all been seduced by his consummate use of encrusted jewels, color and sumptuous fabrics that embellish every woman’s body. Mexican celebrities always go to him to dress for the most important events. Our designer plays with time, he doesn’t follow the rules of what’s in fashion or what’s not, which allows him to approach real art. Each garment is a canvas on which Héctor captures woman’s splendor and beauty through his forms, colors, ornaments and sensuous fabrics. Héctor has been truly courageous. Mexican women are not known for being daring in their wardrobes. Although they do wear colors, the designs usually tend to be simple and clean-cut. However, Terrones has gone in the opposite direction. He has sought to dress strong and daring women, those who want to attract attention everywhere they go.

He finds his muses through history. Women from all eras, who were characterized by their style and strength, such as Queen Victoria and Joan of Arc, among others. HĂŠctor looks to them because of their beauty, culture and inspiration.

soft lips

IN 2 MINUTES

BY LORENA RAMIREZ

In this issue of Mexico’s Wedding Magazine, our Beauty Expert Lorena Ramírez will tell us how to keep our lips smooth and hydrated 365 days of the year. So, get ready to kiss the love of your life. Pollution, cold weather, extreme heat and wearing low-quality lipsticks can make our lips age faster than any other part of our body. However, it’s easier to cure them than you might think. The following recipe will achieve incredible results very quickly.

We’re going to create an exfoliant with sugar and honey, which will restore the smoothness and hydration of your lips, so that they’ll look amazing. You will not only perceive that your lips have a much smoother texture but that when you apply lipstick, the color will last much longer.

Sugar Acts as the exfoliating agent in this homemade treatment. It gently and naturally eliminates dead skin cells (besides having a delicious flavor). After applying the mixture to your lips, you will achieve a smooth texture in a matter of minutes.

Honey is one of the most-used natural products in creating homemade masques and exfoliants. It acts as a hydrating, antiseptic and anti-oxidating agent, so that when you use it on your lips, they will feel smoother, look fresher and will be protected from infections and bacteria.

You can

apply this treatment every other day or before a special event, when you want your lips to look smooth and beautiful. Remember to be gentle in applying this treatment to prevent inflaming the skin around your lips.

APPLICATION: 1. Take a small amount of the mixture

with your fingertips. 2. Massage the mixture into your lips

in a circular movement for one minute. 3. Leave the mixture on your lips for

another minute. 4. Rinse it off with lukewarm water and

gently pat your lips dry with a towel.

Beauty and tradition in your hands What would happen if we were to bring together the quality and style of a luxury handbag and the tradition and beauty of Mexican embroidery? This was exactly what designer Raúl Escobedo asked himself when he created the María Patrona brand. BY JORDANA GALICIA AGUILAR / PHOTOGRAPHY: MARÍA PATRONA

Raúl sought to produce a product that would represent the passion, energy and heritage of his roots, using high quality materials and stylish designs, combined with the most beautiful handmade embroideries to prove that these two elements are not in conflict with each other. But what name would give a meaning to all this legacy of tradition and quality? That’s when Raúl thought of the strong, passionate and loving women who had been with him throughout his life. María was the name of his great grandmother, both grandmothers and his mother. These great women gave him inspiration and strength at every

stage of his life and that’s why he honors them in each one of his designs. The name Patrona was inspired by the Porfirian era, when this word was used to address the wives of Hacienda owners, women who were characterized by their strength, power and status. That is how María Patrona was born. Marvellous bags that capture current and attractive designs inside and out, that have a heart filled with tradition and color.

Beauty and tradition in your hands

Owning a María Patrona bag means that you’re holding a treasure in your hand. You will enjoy the extremely fine designs and be captivated by the details and delight of handmade embroidery. Raúl has also founded the María Patrona Foundation as a mark of respect for Mexican culture. Through this foundation he seeks to help artisans to continue creating and producing quality materials and thus keep alive the artistic legacy that must be passed down from generation to generation, so that the marvellous joy of producing Mexican art will never be lost. When you purchase a María Patrona bag, you will be donating part of the cost to the Mexican artisan sector, to promote and implement educational projects that ensure the continuity of the production of handmade Mexican products, that are recognized in every corner of the earth.

What else can we ask of María Patrona? Without a doubt, carrying one of these bags means that you’re carrying a work of art with you, wherever you go.

ISSAC & MARCELA The state of Jalisco is home to a veritable paradise known as Puerto Vallarta. Before it ever became one of Mexico’s most visited tourist destinations, this magical spot was a traditional town, full of color and magic.

g PHOTOGRAPHY: CHARLY RAMOS

This is the source of Puerto Vallarta’s charm. Despite the passage of time and the popularity of its beaches, Puerto Vallarta continues to retain the charm and flavor of a typical Mexican town. Isaac and Marcela immediately fell in love with this magical place and didn’t have to think twice about choosing it as the site for their wedding day. They selected the beautiful Hotel Casa Velas as the venue for the celebration. The hotel’s facilities, gardens, beaches and nooks are enchanted, sophisticated and elegant, ideal for making their dream of becoming husband and wife come true.

At Mexico Wedding Magazine, we love to discover great Mexicans In this Fifth Issue, we introduce HĂŠctor Zamora, a Mexican artist who creates large-scale works in public spaces and has gained international recognition for his works imbued with creativity and meaning..

report Born in Mexico City in 1974, H茅ctor studied Graphic Design at the Universidad Aut贸noma Metropolitana. Little by little, he began to explore artistic interventions in spaces outside the indoor space of galleries and museums, such as the PNEU 2003 in the Garash Gallery, where what was initially a very formal work was moved from the space of the gallery to occupy outdoor spaces, provoking a series of reactions that would not have occurred if it had been solely intended for gallery interiors. This type of contact with outdoor public spaces was what motivated him to continue in this direction. He began by exhibiting in different spaces in Mexico City and with time, his art has become more polished and perfected. The beauty and exceptional quality of his works have led to their being exhibited in France, New Zealand, the United States, Brazil, Belgium, Turkey, Spain, Egypt, Peru and India, among other countries.

CLEARLY, GREAT CREATIVITY CALLS FOR A LARGE SPACE.

report We asked Héctor why he creates large-scale works in public spaces and his answer was: “The scale of my works is in response to the scale of the space I work in. Public, open spaces, which are usually very large in every sense.” Clearly, great creativity calls for a large space. His career has not stopped growing. His works have won awards and projects keep coming in. In May, he will take part in the Eighth Sculpture Bienniale in Shenzhen, China. But what does being Mexican mean to our artist? He describes his relationship with Mexico as, “A love full of contradictions.” Nevertheless, he proudly carries the Mexican banner to foreign lands. He has a single and very clear purpose: “To be able to motivate the public: to weep with the emotion that a work provokes, to have my work written about, to inspire, for my work to become the subject of study….”

But what advice does Valeria have for newlyweds? A new phase and a new life…what could be better than to enjoy it in a healthy way! After the preparations, the big day, the wedding, the “I do’s,” the congratulations and the honeymoon, the couple returns to their daily life, to the routine and their beginning as a family. Families are not measured by the number of persons in them but by the union between those who comprise it, whether numerous or just a few. And so, what’s a family of two right now is a big family in potential. Being part of a couple should make us want to be better people, to highlight our qualities and minimize our weak points, providing mutual support so we can improve. And it is precisely here where each one’s good habits will have an impact on their future life and on that of their future children (if they have any). A healthy couple can enjoy many things together. But without health, we have practically nothing. It’s hard to be able to enjoy things/situations, if one’s health is impaired. However, a great deal can be done before reaching this point. Health is a matter that concerns everyone and is for everyone, regardless of whether or not they plan to have children or whether they plan to have them sooner or later, the idea is always to get better.

His creations have captivated the entire world.

Lorenzo studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and at the Polytechnic Fashion Institute in Florence, Italy. His passion and excellence led him to work with major international fashion houses including Ratti, Lancetti and Lienzo de los Gazules, among others. In 1993, he decided to open his own atelier , where he perfected his techniques for designing gala and bridal gowns. Since then, his creations have captivated the entire world. Even leading brands like Rosa ClarĂĄ have been impressed by his mastery, which led him into bridal prĂŞt-a-porter, where his name enjoys world reknown. In combination with his exceptional taste, his masterful designs and the use of exquisite fabrics of the highest quality have led him to dress the leading figures of Spanish royalty, socialites, and famous national and international artists.

Lorenzo Caprile has a dual nature: his designs, which are both classic and feminine, are cherished for being the true works of art which they are. He has not been tempted into mass production. He controls even the slightest details in his atelier. This enchanting and elegant space is where he performs his magic, surrounded by his exceptional team. The designer prefers the charm of personalized, made-to-order work, and pays close attention to the smallest details for each customer, whom he adores. This traditional style of working, instilled with care and perfection, is combined with a charming approach to the younger generation of bloggers and public figures, who are enamored of his designs, his intimate service and the incredible experience of creating a dress at his side. Clearly, Lorenzo inspires love because of who he is and what he does. His dresses are the living example of elegance. Lorenzo always recommends simplicity and discretion to convey a subtle femininity, evoked through his designs. Every line proclaims his adoration of the female body, while the exclusive materials enhance the details in each gown.

Wearing a Lorenzo Caprile design is a luxurious honor.

When the time comes to start planning our wedding, we make a huge checklist of all the things we have to do: the dress, venue, flowers, colors, table, dinner, music, etc. And usually we all leave a very important point for the very end. I’m talking about makeup. With so many other details on our mind, we put aside one of the fundamental elements of our look. Makeup is what will give the finishing touch to our image, so we need to make sure it harmonizes with the rest of our look.
