Thirty years ago this May, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon and Southwest Washington opened its doors for the very first time to the families of hospitalized children in need of a “home away from home.” Since that monumental day in May of 1984, our staff and volunteers have offered comfort and support, a well-stocked kitchen and a warm bed to more than 30,000 families – reminding everyone we touch that they are never alone, and here at RMHC, they are always home. Our 30th Anniversary is the perfect time to celebrate “Coming Home” as we continue to welcome unprecedented numbers of children and their families into our two lovely Ronald McDonald Houses every night. And the ideal moment to fondly remember the thousands of families that have made beautiful memories and lifelong connections here at RMHC before “coming home” to their communities in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska and across the US. This year our birthday cake has 31 bright candles – one for every year of service and one to grow on. Our birthday wish is as simple as it is compelling – to be here for another 30 years for every family that needs our help coming home. Thank you for joining us in making this wish come true and for helping us to make our Ronald McDonald Houses feel like home every day for the thousands of families who need us.

“None of us were able to ride in the ambulance when Wade was being transferred from Astoria to Portland,” remembers Lauri, “His sisters went to the hospital gift shop to find something that could travel with him. They didn't want Wade to be alone.” Eggbert has been through every surgery with Wade – 14 as of January. Eggbert comes out of surgery with everything from his own surgical mask, to bandaids, splits, and warm towels. He usually sits next to Wade's head until he feels better and he's even gotten a lollipop or two after shots. Lauri says, “Eggbert is there when the rest of us can't be.”

It was a simple plate of spaghetti that made the difference for Lauri and Eric, parents of a newborn, Wade, diagnosed with spina bifida. “I hate spaghetti,” Lauri remembered with a smile, “but a guest had already dished it up for us. It was the best meal I’d ever tasted – the first real meal I’d had in days.” Coming from Astoria, Oregon and having had to leave their two daughters at home, Lauri and Erik were disoriented, to say the least. “You almost feel as if you are alone on a different world, walking among others but never really hearing or seeing them. I think this is the fog parents feel when they first learn of their child's illness. For the first couple of days, you hear doctor after doctor tell you what is wrong, and you have to try to process it all.” That spaghetti dinner led to a lengthy conversation with other parents processing their own son or daughter’s diagnosis. Best of all, though, Lauri found herself staying in the kitchen late into the evening and – surprisingly enough – actually laughing and joking with other parents. Looking at Wade now, 14 years later, as an energetic, scooter-riding teenager, Lauri remembered how much that sense of camaraderie and community meant to her and her family. “It’s extremely difficult to explain to someone just exactly how amazing the Ronald McDonald House is,” Lauri said. “It helps fill in the gaps you just can't handle.” Above: Wade with his pet. “It was serendipity.” says Alan about being invited to play Bananagrams with another family when he and Abigail first got to the House, “we joined them for a game one day, and then it stuck.” Establishing a routine in a new, unknown environment can be challenging, but having a standing Bananagrams night, among other “homey” experiences, really helped make the House a “home away from home” for the family. “When we play at home now, it reminds us of all the positive things that came out of such a difficult time.”

ABIGAIL “A home is not just a location,” Alan Bennett remarked, “but a place with warmth, care and concern from those who care about you. Fortunately, that is what we found at the Ronald McDonald House.” Alan and his wife, Diane, stayed at the East House when their daughter Abigail was in treatment at Portland’s Kartini Clinic. While they were familiar with RMHC, they had not anticipated being so comfortable in the House. “The emotional stress of the diagnosis and travel was greatly minimized by having somewhere to come home to, versus mere ‘lodging,’” Alan said, citing the friendly staff, volunteers, and families, as well as the organization’s frequent meals and activities, as all contributing to their overall wellness. Now, back home in Naselle, Washington, Abigail is returning to health, and has even been able to again pursue her favorite activity, ballet. Looking back, Alan observed that “a warm, loving home like RMH helps keep the bumps of life from throwing you out of the wagon.”

“Ezra’s a light sleeper,” says Kayla, “So when he would go down for a nap, we would have to be incredibly quiet.” Then the family found a cozy area with a table, right outside their room at East House. “My husband, mother-in-law, and Ezra’s big brother Elijah could sneak out and play cards while Ezra and I got some much needed rest!”

EZRA
In a matter of days Kayla and Casey’s world changed. 19 weeks pregnant with their second child, Ezra, they found themselves traveling from their home in Pendleton for an ultrasound and appointments with heart specialists in Portland. Baby Ezra was diagnosed with hypoplastic right heart syndrome, a condition they had never heard of before. In addition to being overwhelmed by the diagnosis and worried about Ezra’s health, Kayla and Casey didn’t know where they would stay in Portland for the weeks or months of treatment before and after his birth. “We didn’t know how long we’d have to be in Portland,” said Kayla, “We were so completely overwhelmed by everything surrounding Ezra’s diagnosis, we had no support, and had no idea where we would stay.” When they learned about Ronald McDonald House they couldn’t believe a place like it existed. At the East House, just a short walk from the Randall Children’s Hospital where Ezra was being treated, their family found more than a place to sleep. Ronald McDonald House provided the whole family with the comforts of home, and made it easier to care for Ezra, his older brother Elijah, and themselves. Ezra will need more surgeries—at least one of which will be a major open heart procedure. While they remain anxious about his health, Kayla says they no longer worry about where they will stay or what kind of support they will have in Portland. “We know we can always come home to the Ronald McDonald House.”

“Both the boys love superheroes,” says Natalie, “But Miles’ love for Batman goes to a whole new level.” While in treatment, Miles would show up at the hospital in a superhero shirt, or even a full costume. His love of Batman was so great, that when asked what he wanted for his Make-A-Wish wish, Miles replied he wanted to “be Batman.” And so he was, with tens of thousands of people watching as he saved San Francisco as “Batkid” and was granted a key to the city. Now at home, Natalie says Miles’ Batkid uniform hangs proudly in his closet, but doesn’t get pulled out for just any occasion. “Miles says that the uniform is ‘for work,’ not for ‘play’,” says Natalie, “He takes his role as Batkid very seriously.”

MILES
Natalie Scott, had heard of the Ronald McDonald House, “I’ve always noticed the donation boxes at the local McDonald’s,” she says, “but you don’t really understand how the House helps families until you experience it for yourself.” At 18 months, her son Miles fell off a stool. Doctors thought he had broken his clavicle, until they noticed a lump behind his ear. After further testing, Miles was diagnosed with leukemia. The family was faced with traveling the 6 hours from Tulelake, CA to Portland for treatment at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital multiple times a month and staying for anywhere from 1 night to weeks at a time. The Ronald McDonald House truly became their home away from home during the many trips to Portland. “Miles would get excited when we would check back in to the House – he would go straight into the Dining Room and push the big red button to start the train.” “When Miles had to go through a round of steroid treatment due to his compromised immune system, I don’t know what we would have done if we hadn’t been staying in the Ronald McDonald House,” remembers Natalie, “He couldn’t be around many people, but at the same time, the doctors needed him to be active. Having the long hallways and the contained outdoor playground were a Godsend.” Miles, now in long term remission, has had a busy year – started school, had his first season of T-Ball, and of course, saved the city of San Francisco as Batkid. And Natalie has documented it all through scrapbooking, a hobby she picked up while staying in the House. “I would sit at the craft table and make a new page on each trip.” What’s next for Miles? “Well, he’s beaten leukemia and saved a city, so what else is there?” Natalie jokes, “I think he’s looking forward his next great adventure – 1st grade.”

OUTREACH The Outreach Program awards grants that expand access to oral health care for children in Oregon and Southwest Washington. RMHC supported seven community partners in 2013, which collectively provided oral health care services to more than 10,000 children. The Outreach Program is funded by a portion of proceeds from donation boxes at McDonald’s restaurants, and matching contributions from RMHC Global. In 2013, this amounted to $160,000.
Partners Dental Health Solutions for Children: $10,000 Children served: 13,000 The Dental Disease Prevention and Intervention Project improves the oral health of Salem-Keizer students with screenings and education tools. Free Clinic Southwest of Washington: $8,000 Children served: 1,100 The Free Clinic of Southwest Washington provides free, compassionate oral health services for uninsured, low-income children. Clark County Dental Health Day: $5,150 Children served: 200 Children’s Dental Health Day is an annual event established in 2007 that serves the underprivileged and low-income children within Oregon and Southwest Washington. Mercy Foundation, Inc.: $24,500 Children served: 3,800 The Healthy Kids Outreach Program Dental Health Initiative improves children’s dental health in Douglas County through oral health education, school-based prevention services and treatment coordination. Medical Teams International: $46,850 Children served: 3,600 Through its Mobile Dental Program, Medical Teams International addresses dental needs for low-income children in the Pacific Northwest by removing two of the primary obstacles to receiving dental care: cost and accessibility. North Clackamas Education Foundation: $5,500 Children served: 2,800 The foundation provides school-based dental screenings, oral health education and access to dental treatment to disadvantaged North Clackamas students. Oral Heath Funders Collaborative: $30,000 Children served: 2,800 The Emergency Department Research Study will provide a statewide report of utilization of hospital emergency rooms for dental pain in order to raise awareness of oral disease and the need to invest in research and infrastructure to improve oral health for residents of Oregon and Southwest Washington. Oregon Community Foundation: $10,000 Children served: 2,000 Ready to Smile, a school-based children’s dental health program serving Coos and Curry counties, provides preventative services, education and dental kits to students. Virginia Garcia Memorial Foundation: $20,000 Children served: 7,000 Virginia Garcia's comprehensive dental program is designed to ensure that low-income children have immediate access to care that improves and protects their oral and overall-health.

2014 marks the 30th year of Ronald McDonald House in Portland, Oregon. That's over 230,000 nights of welcoming more than 30,000 families through our front doors. Thank you for all your support and here's to the next 30 years! 18
1982 Inspired by the need to support families far from home whose ill children are in Portland hospitals, the Oregon Medical Association Alliance (OMAA), Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, regional McDonald’s restaurant owner/operators, and community representatives begin to plan a Ronald McDonald House in Portland, Oregon.

Portland’s first Ronald McDonald House opens within walking distance of Doernbecher Children’s Hospital/OHSU and Shriners Hospital for Children. The facility (West House) had 17 guest rooms.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon and Southwest Washington, formed in 1993 by McDonald’s owner/operators, begins granting money to nonprofit children’s organizations throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.

WEST HOUSE West House Waterfront is located on the fifth floor of the Marriott Residence Inn RiverPlace in Portland’s South Waterfront. Serving 25 families a night, the House has suites ranging in size from studios to two-bedrooms, each with their own kitchenettes and bathrooms. Additionally, families have a Ronald McDonald House community kitchen and dining room space, play room, teen/media room, reading room, and family room with computers, a big-screen TV, and a fullystocked movie library. The unique partnership between RMHC, OHSU and the Marriott is one of a kind in the RMHC system – West House Waterfront is the only Ronald McDonald House operating out of a hotel.
