For his 2022 solo exhibition, “Momentary Reflections”, Utah artist Douglas Fryer paints quiet moments in nature that inspire peaceful reflection from the viewer. Fryer’s subjects, which include landscapes and still life scenes, have a poetic feel in their arrangement and abstracted presentation, with the artist often inspired by poetry or literary passages. For this show, Fryer reflects on the John Steinbeck quote, All great things are precious and lonely. “There does seem to be a quality of loneliness in my work – not necessarily a quality of being isolated - but maybe of a place where you are left to deeper contemplation,” says Fryer, who often captures subjects in nature that may otherwise go unnoticed, such as a wooded stream in winter or fallen piece of fruit. When translated into his paintings, these overlooked moments become romantic, poetic scenes that evoke emotion and introspection from the viewer. The resonating Steinbeck quote also indicates for the artist that the most awe-inspiring landscapes are not necessarily the grand or heroic vistas that are painted or photographed time and time again; but it is the solitary, secluded experiences in nature that the artist finds most precious. “There is poetry hidden in unremarkable places, in ordinary moments, and in memories we accumulate and distill,” says Fryer. “As we reflect upon this poetry, giving it consideration and form, the resulting work must be a reflection of what is true about ourselves, and what we value most in our loneliest introspection.” Fryer’s painting approach plays between realism and abstraction and utilizes various processes, techniques and tools in order to reveal the essence of a place rather than depict its stark reality. For this show, the artist pushes color and texture to create eye-catching compositions that delve deeper into abstraction. Other landscapes focus on the green and blue hues of Utah’s rural farmland and expansive skies, or the memory of past travels to lush locations in England and Ireland.
