For his 2022 solo exhibition, Seeking Light, Wisconsin artist Daniel Gerhartz presents a new collection of still life, landscape and portrait paintings that depict fleeting moments of divine beauty. His painting approach is classic yet has a distinct style with rich texture, dramatic brushwork and luminous color. No matter the subject, there is an undeniable spiritual presence throughout his work, which allows for a strong emotional connection with the viewer. “I’m not creating literal storylines of what one would consider a spiritual painting,” explains Gerhartz. “I’m inspired by beauty, light, unity, rhythm…and all of those things originate with the Lord. I want to subtly beg the question, where did all this beauty come from?” Gerhartz’s figurative work is painted from life or staged photography, and is often inspired by his own family or personal experiences. “The Gateway” is a central piece in the exhibition that symbolizes what a heavenly transition may look and feel like. The painting has a unique mirrored composition that depicts the silhouette of a young girl with an opening of golden light in the center. She stands in a field of wildflowers with sunlit grasses, which reflect an array of colors in this dazzling image. Gerhartz has explored this compositional arrangement before, which was originally inspired by an image in his mind around the time of his father’s passing. The romance of spring is another theme in the show, depicted through blooming still life scenes, green pastures, and soft evening light. The transition to spring brings with it feelings of hope and renewal - as well as a refreshed appreciation for natural beauty - all of which are important influences for the artist and permeate his paintings.
