“In these paintings I relate my observation of what happens in human beings not on the surface, but within ourselves,” says the artist of his latest work. “Throughout this series is a theme related to human emotion seen through the eyes of a child; one who does not judge but is still amazed.” Many of Ortega’s compositions offer feelings of adolescent imaginings, with young figures in medieval dress engaging with mythical creatures, sprouting wings, or embarking on fantastical adventures. This concept is symbolic of our innermost desires and childlike imaginations, and is meant to reawaken our innate curiosities and passion for life.

“I want to relate, as I have in other exhibitions, the way in which someone embraces their own freedom,” says Ortega. “I want to describe the power of innocence in childhood, in which you are everything: you are infinite, you are an acrobat, a hero...marveling at the world and your existence with the most incredible breadth.” In reference to the show title, Ortega views the exhibition as a letter, with each painting symbolizing a fragment of its prose. Perhaps it is a letter from a child as they creatively relay their experiences and dreams to the world.

Ricardo Fernandez Ortega is a realist painter living in Durango, Mexico, whose work contains contemporary themes and surrealist subject matter painted in a classical style. His technique evokes the legacy of Old Spanish masters as he cites artists such as Diego Velasquez as inspiration, particularly in his use of rich color and romantic light. Ortega’s surreal subject matter, however, gives his work a unique lens. “I try to come close to realism in order to achieve a specific visual purpose,” he states. “That purpose is to provide something that connects to both the viewer and myself in a very particular way, psychologically speaking…But from there, I want to achieve something quite different than photorealists and hyperrealists.”
