Douglas Fryer presents a new collection of richly textured, subtly abstracted landscape and still life paintings. The Utah artist uses a variety of tools, techniques and media to create poetic works that inspire contemplation and reflection. His solo exhibition, “Moments,” opens on December 3rd with an artist reception from 5-7pm at the gallery. All artwork is also viewable online at meyergalleries.com. “I continue to explore the process of breaking down the subject, then building the composition around an interpretive or inventive concept as opposed to a simple representation,” says Fryer of his latest work. “The work begins with an emotional response to the subject and is developed through multiple processes, materials, and tools I may use. My hope is that the resulting content is a metaphysical concept rather than only a creation of a likeness of the subject.” Fryer’s paintings represent a frame of mind, mood or emotion rather than a specific location or physical landmark. Merging remembered and invented memories, his paintings provide a sensation of moving through time with blurred foregrounds or layered vantage points. Fryer believes that “works of art are evidence of the artist’s effort to experience and comprehend the world, and to observe particular nuances in visual, conceptual and spiritual information.” Fryer was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois as well as California. Fryer ultimately returned to Utah where he received his BFA and MFA from Brigham Young University in Provo. This year is a personal milestone for Fryer, marking 40 years since he began his studies as an artist at BYU in 1981. Fryer’s work now hangs in private and public collections across the country, and he has taught painting at several schools and universities including BYU, the University of Hartford in Hartford Connecticut, and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. He currently lives with his family in Spring City, Utah.
