For his 2022 solo exhibition at Meyer Gallery, figurative painter Kim English presents a new body of alla prima paintings inspired by stories and scenes from the artist’s world travels and daily life. With limited travel in recent years, English’s latest work references past trips abroad to locations in Italy, France and Nepal, in addition to beach scenes in Cape Cod and more. The artist is able to relive these memories with a fresh perspective, creating paintings from his reference photographs and sketches from the trips. However, it is not the grand beauty of a famous landscape or the posed portraits that English is after; it’s the everyday activities or casual interactions of the people around him that catches his artist eye. The beauty in which English translates these scenes onto canvas, with his gestural brushwork and masterful chiaroscuro, is what draws the viewer in and captures our emotion. English’s work inspires the viewer to live more connected to the present moment, to pause and take note of the world around us. English is drawn to imagery that contains a deeper story related to human expression and interaction, which he typically leaves up to the viewer to decipher. Some of his latest subjects include two young girls taking cell phone photos of a sunset beach, men working together to fix a boat in Nepal, and a solitary woman collecting shells from a shoreline. He’s also drawn to the color, pattern, and composition found in casual street scenes or cultural celebrations, which make their way into his work in pieces such as “Patterns of Umbria.” English’s alla prima or “wet on wet” painting technique allows him to work quickly, which comes in handy when traveling. “I try to capture the flavor of a village or place with five to six little paintings during the day,” he says of his sketching process. “When I get back to the studio, they help give me the feel of the city.” English’s photography is also an important reference point when painting back at the studio, as he captures fleeting moments in film that he can expand upon with paint. “I try not to contrive too much,” says English about creating his compositions. “I just let life happen around me, and there’s always a story. I never try to improve on it, I just want to capture it.” -Kelly Carper
