For his 2022 solo exhibition at Meyer Gallery, Francis Livingston presents a new collection of southwest-inspired paintings in the artist’s signature expressionist style. Color Rhythms speaks to Livingston’s purposeful application of color to create harmonious movement in his paintings, as well as dynamic compositional designs. Livingston’s exhibition paintings reflect the culture of the west and its unique landscape, people, and architecture. Color Rhythms opens on Friday, August 19th with a reception from 5-7pm at the gallery. Artwork is also available online at mey Theergalleries.com.majorityof
Livingston’s 20+ exhibition paintings are his familiar western subject matter, with several that represent the artist’s urban and abstract styles. Across the body of work is Liv ingston’s continued evolution of color harmony and composition, which naturally builds off pre vious paintings. When creating a new painting, Livingston often refers back to earlier pieces for concepts and designs that worked, and evolves them with new color relationships and paint ap plications. “I look at it much like a musician or songwriter,” says Livingston, who often compares his process to music. “You write one song but you can sing it many different ways – and use that song to create another one.” Livingston is not necessarily a spontaneous painter, but when it comes to creating the right movement and rhythm for a painting, he goes with the flow. “My paintings are planned, but I don’t hesitate to change things,” he says. “I may have a design in mind, but the application shifts as I go.” In this way, Livingston’s style seamlessly moves from loose and abstract to tight and re alistic, but always retains an expressionist edge. Livingston enjoys the creative freedom of his style; before pursuing painting full time 30 years ago, he worked as a professional illustrator, gaining the dedicated work ethic and technical skillset that has been paramount for his success ful art Livingstoncareer.currently
lives and works in Sun Valley, Idaho. He attended the Rocky Mountain School of Art in Denver before moving to San Francisco in 1975 to study and subsequent ly teach at the Academy of Art. Here he gained interest in the Bay Area Figurative Movement, which still influences his style. He worked in San Francisco for 20 years before moving with his family to Idaho, where he developed the immense appreciation for the west that continues to captivate his work today.
