Francis Livingston is an expressive painter whose work depicts traditional western subject matter through a modern lens. The Sun Valley artist brings a unique perspective to western painting with an unexpected fauvist-style color palette, rich paint quality and gestural brushwork, setting him apart from classic southwest painters. For his Solo th Exhibition opening August 20 , Livingston presents a new collection of southwest landscapes and Native American portraits, alongside a series of purely abstract works. Livingston’s distinct painting style is a culmination of influences from his life and career, which has roots in Colorado but extends to San Francisco and New York. Since settling in Idaho after 25 years in California, Livingston has been captivated by Native American culture and architecture, the unique light and color of the landscape, and the region’s rich artistic history. This fascination with western culture is reflected in his paintings, with subject matter reminiscent of work by the early Taos Founders, an influential group for Livingston and for many painters in the area. It’s Livingston’s expressive brushwork and vibrant color that distinguishes his style, which is strongly influenced by French Impressionists, Tonalists and the Bay Area Figurative Painters, who he studied earlier in his career. Livingston’s loose representational style easily lends itself to abstraction, which will also be present for his Solo Exhibition. “It’s really not a big leap for me to paint abstract,” says Livingston, whose sense of composition and color remain consistent. “It’s still within the framework of the way I like to see things.” A figure in the landscape is simply “pattern against pattern,” as the artist tends to build his representational scenes as arrangements of color, shape and form, regardless of subject matter. “It’s still about creating a surface that when viewed, is interesting,” he says.
