For his 2022 Solo Exhibition, New York artist Milt Kobayashi presents a new series of portrait paintings with contemporary compositional designs, bold color, and loose brushwork. The work continues to merge Kobayashi’s stylistic influences: Japanese printmaking inspires his flat patterning and perspective, while his handling of paint is a nod to master artists such as John Singer Sargent or Diego Velázquez. His Solo Exhibition opens on Friday July 22nd with an Opening Reception from 5-7pm. New work can also be seen online at meyergalleries.com. Kobayashi’s figures often appear pensive and introspective despite their public settings, lost in thought or casting discrete glances, while others fill the canvas and confront the viewer with a strong and confident gaze. Rooted in realism, his paintings have a modern aesthetic that appeal to a wide range of collectors with a bold style. His recent explorations in thematic or narrative elements bring even more intrigue to the work, as he focuses on a certain color or recurring subject to connect a series. Japanese art is still Kobayashi’s biggest influence, particularly 16th and 17th century Ukiyo-e woodblock print masters Hokasai, Sharaku, and Utamaro. It is the patterns, color harmonies, use of negative space, and particularly composition and design that informs Kobayashi’s unique style. Born in New York City, Kobayashi is a third-generation Japanese-American who lived with his family in Oahu, Hawaii and Los Angeles, California, where he spent many years working as an illustrator before returning to New York in the late 1970s. Here, he was strongly influenced by museum visits to the Met and other New York institutions and ultimately shifted his career from illustration to painting. He has now been working as a professional artist for more than 30 years.
