The exhibition will run from July 21st to August 3rd, with an Opening Reception on Friday, July 22nd, from 5-7pm. Drawing inspiration from a fusion of artistic influences, Kobayashi’s figures emanate a sense of pensive introspection amidst their personal settings. Whether lost in thought or engaging the viewer with a powerful gaze, these realistic, modern portraits exhibit an undeniable allure. It is within the realm of Japanese art, especially the 16th and 17thcentury Ukiyo-e woodblock print masters Hokasai, Sharaku, and Utamaro, that Kobayashi finds his greatest influence. Their use of patterns, color harmonies, negative space, and compositional design informs his unique artistic style.
Born in New York City, Milt Kobayashi is a third-generation Japanese-American artist who spent his formative years in Oahu, Hawaii, and Los Angeles, California. With a background in illustration, he embarked on a transformative journey upon returning to New York in the late 1970s. Influenced by visits to renowned institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Kobayashi shifted his focus from illustration to painting, ultimately establishing himself as a professional artist for over three decades.
“Intimate Interludes” showcases Kobayashi’s contemporary portrait paintings, where he breathes life into his subjects, transcending traditional realism and embracing a more energetic and modern aesthetic.
