For his upcoming solo show at Meyer Gallery, Wisconsin artist Jacob A. Pfeiffer presents a series of paintings with “fun and whimsical subject matter that hopefully add beauty and humor to our stressful daily lives.” Pfeiffer’s tightly rendered realism is balanced by the artist’s lighthearted sense of humor, which is evident through the playful idioms and visual puns he creates through his compositions. Man vs. Machine opens Friday, October 8th with a reception from 5-7pm. Paintings will be available in the gallery and online at meyergalleries.com. Pfeiffer’s exhibition title and theme is loosely based on his new painting of the same name, which features a vintage outboard motor and paddle. The painting is one of his largest to date at 44 x 30 inches. “The concept is in reference to the American Folklore hero John Henry who competed against a mechanical drill, which was intended to be a more efficient and productive way to drill into rock,” says Pfeiffer of the painting’s inspiration. “I can relate this mythical battle to the type of highly realistic oil paintings I create in the studio. After the invention of photography, painting was thought to be on its deathbed. Why would someone labor so intensively with a paintbrush to depict and record observations when a camera could do it much easier? My answer to that is the fact that a photograph can never achieve the same type of depth, texture and atmosphere that a painting can.” Pfeiffer’s hyper realistic paintings feature bold colors, seemingly tangible textures and juxtaposed patterns. His many layers of thin paint allow light to penetrate and bounce off the surface of the piece in ways that create a more rich visual experience – unlike a flat photograph. “Thankfully, oil painting has continued to survive and thrive despite the predictions of its demise,” he says. Pfeiffer graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and continues to live and work in the state. His paintings have been featured in a variety of publications including Art News and American Arts Quarterly, and have been published on the covers of Southwest Art, American Art Collector and American Artist Magazines. Pfeiffer’s work hangs in private and corporate collections throughout the United States including Washington DC, San Francisco and New York, as well as Europe. His work has been shown in museum exhibitions at the Museum of Wisconsin Art, Knoxville Museum of Art, New York’s Arnot Art Museum, and others.
