For his 2022 Solo Exhibition, Oklahoma artist Brad Price presents a new body of work inspired by his adventures through Northern New Mexico, captured in his expressive and vibrant painting style. New Mexico Backroad opens on November 4th with an Opening Reception from 5-7pm. New work can also be seen online at meyergalleries.com. “My work for this show came from driving around New Mexico off the beaten track,” says Price. “I love to just drive and come upon things that are new and exciting.” Price’s regular visits to New Mexico over the years have provided him with thousands of reference photographs, which he uses in the studio to inspire new work. “When photographing, I frame shots that are perfect for a painting,” says Price, whose creative background is photography, illustration and writing. “I can see the painting in my head before I click the shutter.” In this way, Price begins composing his pieces before ever picking up a brush, analyzing his subjects through the lens before translating them to canvas. Back in his Oklahoma studio, he may add or omit details from his reference photograph, but stays close to his original perspective and inspiration for the piece. Price often paints scenes from the High Road to Taos, the Turquoise Trail, O’Keeffe Country and the Chama Wilderness. All will be present in his upcoming exhibition, in addition to city scenes of Taos at Christmas time, when farolitos dot the streets and illuminate adobe architecture. Price will feature approximately 40 new pieces for New Mexico Backroads, ranging from intimate small works to large paintings that are three by four feet. One of Price’s larger pieces in the show is titled Backlit Chamisa, featuring the roadside plant haloed by the afternoon sun. The chamisa is a recurring subject for Price, who paints the common shrub with equal beauty and reverence as his adobe churches. Price’s bold, directional brushstrokes and use of vivid, complimentary color characterize his work and align him with some of New Mexico’s most renowned painters. This year, he became an elected member of the Salmagundi Club out of New York, a society of artists that historically included Taos Founders such as Burt Phillips and Ernest Blumenschein. It is one of America’s oldest arts organizations with more than 1,100 current members throughout the United States and abroad. Today’s members and recently past members are some of the most recognized names within representational art. This year also marks Price’s fourth inclusion in the Small Works, Great Wonders® exhibition at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, an invitation-only show featuring over 100 of the nation’s finest artists.
