For his 2022 solo exhibition at Meyer Gallery, New Mexico painter William C. Hook presents 30 new works that reflect the evolution of his modernist series in addition to his classic southwest landscapes. Different Strokes speaks to the range of Hook’s collector base as well as his expaning painting style. The exhibit opens with an Artist Reception on Friday, August 5th from 5-7pm at the gallery. Artwork is also available to view online at meyergalleries.com. Hook’s exhibition paintings are largely inspired by New Mexico, but also include scenes from California, Arizona and Colorado. Idyllic landscapes such as peaceful aspen groves, southwest sunsets and mountain vistas are rendered with broad brushstrokes and vivid color, capturing viewers with their classic style. In addition to these awe-inspiring images, Hook is also drawn to simple and often overlooked moments, which he paints with equal tenacity. One such piece is Sibling Rivalry, which depicts two groupings of hollyhocks growing with determination through a roadside guardrail. The painting is set against a two-tone adobe building, creating an intriing and contemporary composition. Hook has always been drawn to unexpected subjects and contemporary constructs when it comes to organizing a painting, which is what gives his work a distinct aesthetic and sets him apart from other representational western artists. Hook’s contemporary painting perspective has naturally led him toward abstraction, and this exhibition continues the modernist series he debuted in 2018. The series consists of abstract interpretations of his representational paintings, and was initially inspired by a trip to the south of France where he encountered work by Matisse, Picasso and Chagall. While his modernist pieces are inspired by existing work, they become new compositions and easily stand alone in their eclectic abstraction. “It’s as if I’m taking all the elements of a landscape or traditional subject and putting them in a box, shaking them up, tossing them out and seeing how the pieces fall,” he explains. Hook lives and work in Santa Fe and has been an important contributing artist to Meyer Gallery since 1988. Throughout this time his work has been featured in publications such as Southwest Art, Art of the West, U.S. Art, American Artist, and Focus Santa Fe. His paintings can be found in the permanent collections of the Denver Art Museum, the Tucson Art Museum, the University of New Mexico, the FORBES Museum, NYC, and the Genesee Museum, NY.
