RESIDENT ENGAGEMENT
“ I was very sad leaving my home and I thought I was coming here to die. When I got here I realized I was really coming here to live. I am so much more independent here and I have a community of friends surrounding me.” – Ursula, Resident
ADA + MOBILITY Feedback through interviews with residents and staff concluded that the community has a good flow of building program and is easily navigable for residents. In respect to the corridors, the accessible length and width, lean rails throughout, good levels of lighting, and areas of rest were highlighted by both staff and residents as positives.

VIRTUAL DEMENTIA EXPERIENCE
The Meyer Team participated in a Virtual Dementia Experience which is a, hands-on, experiential tool kit created to understand the physical and mental challenges of those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. It is used to simulate the symptoms and to help caregivers and staff better identify and cope with their patients’ behaviors and needs.
COMMUNITY OPERATIONS + ENHANCEMENTS Through interviews with the Executive Director, Department Heads, staff and residents, many positive and constructive design aspects were recommended. The relationships and flexibility of the common areas on each floor were highly regarded by the staff. The maintenance team mentioned how easy the building is to maintain and clean due to the specified finishes and products, as well as the simplicity of the HVAC system. Areas for improvement noted by the staff included BOH access, additional storage throughout the building, a larger laundry room and wellness suite, and more space in the kitchen for larger equipment. Additional suggested amenities by residents included a fitness exercycle machine, a pool table, piano, indoor pool and hot tub and a dedicated card room.
LOOKING FORWARD The sleepover study was a true lens into the day-to-day operations of a senior living community. Small design elements can make a big impact on resident and staff. The Meyer team gained a new level of empathy for aging seniors and the residents that have made the community their home. Future considerations include more flower boxes and gardening areas, chalkboards and interactive art, and reading books in the library for residents. “ Design must respect the staff and residents. Design features of a building either ease or magnify the resident and staff experience day to day.” – Marybeth, Staff
