/ * infilling faith proposes a place for spontaneous assembly of the earth’s 5 major religions: hinduism, buddhism, christianity, islam, and judaism. the [interfaith infill] recognizes the condition of an urban infill site nestled between two existing christian centers of worship. the site condition offers a unique approach and arrival. the proposal anticipates the assembly and co-existence of the religions while offering private places of prayer. the proposal recognizes the need of spaces for many, spaces for few, and spaces for one. the scalar position of the interfaith center realizes the intimate nature of man, and the presence and existence of human faith.* / great light warms the soul; realization of the self; welcoming each faith.

_site infill.

/ * the siting of downtown fairmont marks a unique opportunity for the program of the interfaith infill. the site finds itself at a junction of circulation flows; the passerby, the motorist, the jogger, frequenter. the circulation patterns that flow to and through the site offer unique approaches for all members of the community to engage. the site is further engaged within the institutional and civic territory of downtown fairmont. the adjacent context includes religious, government, monumental, and educational architectures. this siting promotes the contextual relationship with the urban fabric of the fairmont civic district and adhere to the character of the community. the civic engagement promotes the welcoming and approachable nature of the programmatic use.* /

03 [ sacred_hinduism ] the hindu faith recognizes prayer as an integral part of the religion. the private space for hindu prayer allows the visitor to pray in a space of solitude reflective of traditional hindu temples.

04 [ sacred_buddhism ] the buddhist faith follows a prayer of meditative state and self-relfection. the private space for buddhism offers a glowing space for self-relection within nature and the given environment, while offering a glimpse to promote the reflection towards kindness of others.

each religion has a space for one, while sharing the space for many.

05 [ sacred_christianity ] the christian faith offers many diverse forms of prayer from self-reflection to reading from the sacred text. the private space for christianity provides a semisecluded space for prayer and provides a sense of enclosure reminiscent of the guardian womb. 06 [ sacred_islam ] the islamic faith recognizes 5 distinct modes of prayer per dayas part of the five pillars of faith. the prayer must be conducted towards the mecca. the private space offers a positioning towards mecca while allowing for privacy and seclusion. 07 [ sacred_judaism ] the jewish faith offers prayers three times per day and facing in the general direction of the rising sun. the private space for judaism points towards the east and offers a cavernous experience to promote historic modes of prayer.

/ * spectacle of craft criticizes the traditonal notions of production tectonics in architecture. what role does experience play when data and information begin to construct production in architecture? robotic networks are programmed to temporally construct, deconstruct, and reconstruct the traditional element of a wall to tell a never-ending story. the work recognizes a symbiotic relationship as a newly added department of digitality and fabrication to the cranbrook academy of art. the symbiotic relationship is further extended by finding operations in the dilapidated making context of detroit; new digital media fill the voids left by manufacturing.* / “here is what we have to offer you... confusion guided by a clear sense of purpose. -gordon matta clark.

_20

_campus additions.

/ * the addition of a new department of digitality and fabrication to the curriculum at cranbrook academy of art calls for an approach to adding necessary programs and interfacing an institutional context. the addition follows the symbiotic approach by attaching to an existing and underutilized building. the new department relates to the existing campus by following appropriate principles laid by eliel saarinen’s design. digitality recognizes the concept of form follows content and utilizes an invisible enclosure while using data information to change a temporal narrative. visitors to the department will never experience the same space twice; the robotic armatures construct, deconstruct, and reconstruct masony walls based on digital information received by current students, faculty members, and fellows. this conceptual approach recognizes a new spectacle of craft, utilization of machinary as the extension of biology. the symbiotic relationship is continued by interfacing the digital and logistical network between cranbrook and the city of detroit.* /

_29

/ * music row is a historic neighborhood at the foundation of the musical culture in nashville, tn. established as a residential neighborhood southwest of downtown, music row grew into a small business district pursuing musical production and recording. as the music industry in nashville exploded and evolved, so too did music row. music row 2.0 engages the future of music and the evolving dialogue between musical production and digital media. the evolvement of music row recognizes the historic past while anticipating a bright and exciting future. the collaboration of work, lfe, and play is combined with musical production to tune the already lively neighborhood.* / “my relationship with music row has always been, from my end, optimistic and hopeful that there is more than one way to apporach the writing, recording, and marketing of an album. -deanna carter.

music row 1.0 is the hodge podge of the musical industry, tourism culture, small enterprise, commuter culture, and residual living.

existing neighborhood fabric.

_31

[ historic development ] the development towards music row 1.0 infringes upon the scalar and historical qualities of the neighborhood. large mega-block designs and demolition on historic sites threatens to diminish the production of music row as a keynote place in nashville. the mapping of music row 1.0 includes cataloging historic buildings and sites, noting places of potential demolition, and including sites of development underway.

[ existing public transit ] public transit is an on-going political issue for metropolitan nashville, with the neighborhood of music row as no anomaly. existing public transit lines surround music row, with only two lines offering registration points at a midpoint of cross grain. the mapping of existing transit lines and registration points makes note of the trajectory of public transit for music row 1.0.

[ existing bicycular movement ] music row 1.0 is the original neighborhood to provide separate bicycular lanes for bicyclists. increase of motorist traffic and abandoned urban renewal has left music row 1.0 as a commuter’s nightmare. bicycle lanes are fragmented as they move towards the commercial territory; oneway vehicular circulation with wide traffic lanes accounts for fast speeds and dangerous threats to pedestrians and bicyclists.

_32

_music row 2.0.

music row 2.0 engages the digital media of musical production while engaging with the existing urbanism.

proposed master plan..

_33

[ urban development ] music row 2.0 engages with the digital and networked culture of the neighborhood. the lack of diverse enterprises caused the infringement of development towards the historic nature. adding uses and business that contrast to the musical industry allows for a diverse neighborhood and engaging interaction. these new functions aid in the digital culture of the neighborhood. listeners who downloaded this also liked...

[ new public transit ] nashville will have improved public transit infrastructure in the coming future. instead of bypassing the neighborhood of music row, these new infrastructure engages the neighborhood as a hub for business and an appendage of the tourist culture. a bus-rapid transit system utilizes a strategic access point to music row and engages with a new looping system that commutes to the commercial territory. a historic trolley loop engages with the history and tourist culture. [ transportation of the future ] the motorist commute is decremented in music row 2.0. entrepreneurs and musicians commute digitally to work. this opens the network infrastructure for new modes of circulation. walkability is increased. with engagement of small business. bike lanes are defragmented and protected with vegetative barriers. music row 2.0 is engages as three entities; small business and digital production, tourist culture and entertainment, and livability. cross grain infrastructure completes the defragmentation.

_39

/ * semiotic landscape recognizes the historic and contemporary modes of transit culture in east tennessee. the theoretical approach of semiotics finds an operation of juxtaposing community pride and trust with motorist movement and cubism. the proposal for a fire station utilizes the speed of the passerby as a catalyst for engaging the community and the region. the architecture of the fire promotes refuge from transportation, laying hold to the historic roots inherent in the community of seymour, tennessee. the site for seymour volunteer fire department’s headquarters remains hidden from the common path of travel, unless needed as a refuge or shelter.* / “the beauty of the mountain is hidden for all those who try to discover it from the top, supposing that, one way or another, one can reach this place directly. the beauty of the mountain reveals only to those who climbed it... -antoine de daint-exupery.

[ regulating axes ] regulating axes and views from major site registration points formalizes the breakdown of the programs for community engagement. the axes stem from the assembly space, the apparatus bay, and the site entry. [ proposing program ] the master plan scheme allows for added public amenities that engage with both the community and the fire station. these new programs are proposed as a fitness center and nutritional farmer’s market. [ allotting land use ] the site selection provides opportunity with the fire department to act as an entrepreneur with the community. the size of the site allows for the fire department to potentially sell portions of the property to accommodate other public or private uses. [ the town of seymour ] the town of seymour is operated as a traditional mode of suburban sprawl and signage culture. the site location provides opportunity to act as an access point between the community of seymour and the travelers whom pass through. proposed master plan.
