Smarter Sections
Make Better Drawings
Section planes now have names and symbols, making them easy to find and organise. Filled section cuts are now baked into SketchUp Pro! There is also improved performance for models that use section planes to hide a large amount of geometry. The more geometry you section off, the more you'll benefit!
Need to add linework that's not in your model? Create a scaled drawing in LayOut and sketch over a 3D model to flesh out your project, or draw from details to scale directly in LayOut. With inferencing, chamfering and filleting, arcs, offset arrays and selections; LayOut is even better at everything you need to draw details or create beautiful illustrations at scale.
Got BIM? There’s more!
We’ve introduced Advanced Attribute fields for a component's Price, Size, URL, Type Status and Owner. Generate Report now aggregates component data so you can do things like configure reports to sum parts and quantities and cutlists, or create detailed estimates by adding up prices by layer. You can rely on IFC in SketchUp to transfer the attributes you assign and manipulate in projects, allowing for information to move freely between SketchUp and other applications.
• Import DWG files into LayOut
• Native support for importing and exporting STL files
• Multi Viewport Dimensioning
• Improvement to Outliner's overall load performance

We often play with the idea of function by using the same object in different ways. Identical pots may appear in a garden used as water features, tables or fire pits. And when it comes to water features, we always ensure that they are integral to the overall design. We also enjoy playing with patterns and textures, making the same pattern appear several times in the garden on different materials. When it comes to working in a small space, we prefer to use asymmetric designs, as symmetry in small gardens makes them appear even smaller.

OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGES The main challenge for this project was the construction depth. With very little depth available from the roof surface to door threshold heights, the shallow installation requirements of Kinley’s Terrafina decking enabled the design to be implemented as planned. This was supported by using Spirapave 12mm pedestals as part of the installation.

WHY KINLEY? Kinley’s Terrafina decking was chosen because of its high quality, durability and clean, contemporary looks, as well as ease of installation which saved a lot of time on site. The decking, along with the support structures enabled the overall look to be implemented as the architect designed because it overcame the challenges of a roof terrace environment. Kinley’s products helped to create a desirable place to be where residents can relax and enjoy a view across the city of London. t: +44 (0)1580 830 688 e: sales@kinley.co.uk www.kinley.co.uk 14

ideas of sustainability and harmony between nature and human beings. The exhibition is aiming to host eight million visitors, and its goal is to create a sustainable environment for its citizens. The design concept for the AIPH Community Garden is based on a combination of various functions: sustainability, ecology, landscape and air quality improvement. It demonstrates how green spaces in cities improve the environment, social life and health of urban communities, and focuses on what green spaces can do for these communities, most of whom live in apartments without access to their own garden or outdoor space. The green space spans 660m2 and includes seventeen ornamental and eight fruit trees (an orchard), vertical gardens, raised edible planting beds, an eco-friendly natural pond, a green roof, a rain garden, permeable pathways, solar panels, a planted table with An aquaponics (sustainable farming) system, insect hotels, outdoor gym equipment and native local plants.

Wonderwall commercial is literally growing upwards! Since Wonderwall was introduced to the commercial living wall sector in February this year, the company has experienced rapid growth. Dave Fitton, along with Wonderwall designer Rick McKeever, are Wonderwall commercial. Dave, as an established landscaper, has worked in the living wall sector for over 12 years. Dave explains why Wonderwall is far superior to other options available: “Wonderwall is instant, it doesn’t need to be planted 2 or 3 months in advance, the individual pockets within the module are large enough to accommodate established plants. You’ll never be looking at a wall full of plastic or fabric with some foliage peeping through. The self-watering system is seamless - once the planters are interlocked, a simple drip irrigation system is installed. Regardless of the height of the vertical wall, each Wonderwall module will receive the correct amount of water with little or no waste. Furthermore, you don’t need a complicated cage system or intricate rear fixing system, this means the installation time is reduced considerably compared to other systems.” Wonderwall has just successfully completed 300m2 vertical green wall at Chester racecourse, along with sections of interior living walls, the whole installation was completed within 2 weeks.

EXPANDING DELIVERY FLEET REFLECTS GROWTH AT PAYNES TURF Leading turf supplier, Paynes Turf, is expanding its delivery fleet of FORS accredited vehicles following sustained growth of the business in the UK. The investment will allow the 40-year-old turf company, which grows premium quality turf at its 1500-acre farms in Essex and Suffolk, to meet increasing demand for Paynes Turf’s products and services. Paynes Turf products include turf, topsoils and border bark, with turf supplied in 1sqm rolls or in big rolls of 20sqm, the latter being ideal for landscapers working on large-scale commercial projects, allowing turf to be laid quickly and effectively. The company has enhanced its delivery service with the addition of a tenth vehicle to its fleet, all of which are fitted with custom-built smart GPS tracking systems that allow drivers to stay ahead of the traffic, and include piggy-back forklift unloading.
26
“Efficient landscaping work requires turf to be on site at the right time, which is often early in the working day for landscapers. Reliable delivery is yet another area where Paynes Turf excels; we operate our own fleet so that we can better meet our customers’ needs – delivering right on site with our forklift unloading where required,” said John Payne, Partner at Paynes Turf. Paynes’ turf is harvested the day before delivery to ensure that it arrives fresh and in the best condition. “Much of our business relies on recommendations and reputation so it’s important that we go that extra mile to provide a fast and efficient delivery service.” To find out more, please visit www.paynesturf.co.uk or call 01255 830325

RHS FLOWER SHOW TATTON PARK HIGHLIGHTS 2018 • Immersive ‘Poisonous Garden’ full of deadly plants • Sunshine field of over 5000 Rudbeckia • NEW Flower School activity and workshop hub brimming with floral talks and advice
From 18-22 July, the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Flower Show Tatton Park, supported by Bruntwood, will return to Cheshire’s 1,000 acre Deer Park with a bumper year to celebrate the Show’s 20th anniversary, featuring an array of new content from the scary to the spectacular. For the very first time, RHS Flower Show Tatton Park invites visitors to step inside ‘The Poisonous Garden’ and discover the gruesome and deadly nature of some of the UK’s best loved plants. Daring visitors can surround themselves with peril as plants and flowers drip from the ceiling in the ‘poison tunnel’ or get lured in by pretty plants that have a hidden deadly charm, such as toxic foxgloves and Angel’s Trumpet, which if ingested causes its victim to drift into a fatal sleep. Show goers will have the chance to get dangerously close to carnivorous plants and their prey, and learn more about the myths and folklore surrounding our ancient flora.

A Nordic Approach To Sustainablility Most of us believe we have a good idea of what sustainability is and what to look for, but the issue of sustainability is ever more complex. When considering a diverse range of products, a multi-faceted and holistic approach is important. A National Approach In May 2016, Norway committed to zero deforestation, becoming the first country in the world to do so. The protection of Norway and Sweden’s own forests (from where all Vestre’s timber is sourced) is also assured through a highly sustainable approach where felling of
52
virgin forest is prohibited, and legislation encourages biodiversity as much as timber quality. Backed by the Government’s support for renewable energy, almost all of Norway’s electricity production is provided by hydropower. This has considerable implications for production, as will be seen later. Borne out of an area that endures the harshest of conditions, and often sees annual temperature swings of 50-60oC, quality and longevity are key if products are to last more than a few years in use.
Production
Material Selection
It’s generally understood that carrying out all manufacturing within a contained area will bring environmental benefits by keeping ’road miles’ to a minimum. All Vestre’s production is carried out in Scandinavia, using the shortest possible delivery routes.
Choice of materials also plays a key role in sustainable production; Vestre uses only Nordic materials:
Investment in modern production facilities brings about improvements in efficiency: robotic cutting and welding, for instance, ensure high quality and precision, minimal use of resources, and less waste than traditional methods. Vestre’s production utilises renewable energy, with major benefits: •
The use of only Nordic steel means greenhouse gas emissions for the material are 30% lower than the average global steel producer.
•
Hot-dip galvanising, which provides permanent rust protection, is carried out in a bath of molten zinc, at a temperature of 450oC. This energy intensive process has a significantly lower impact due to the employment of renewable energy.
Steel – only Nordic steel is used, which is dimensioned to cope with rough use and processed to maximise durability. High quality steel also ensures excellent adhesion of the galvanising alloy layer that protects against rust. Polyester powder coating – the powder is solventfree and applied using advanced nozzles that ensure full coverage. The resulting high quality finish of Corrosion Class C5 will withstand the most corrosive of atmospheric conditions. Timber - is impregnated with natural linseed oil (the eco-friendly Linax system) which offers lasting protection against rot and is virtually maintenancefree. Whole Life Cost A long product lifecycle is good for the environment and ‘disposable’ solutions are avoided so as not to unnecessarily use finite resources. Initial outlay will ideally deliver a lengthy lifespan with minimal maintenance requirements, along with the availability of spare parts should a product be damaged.
Lengthy warranties bring certainty that a product will be fit for use for many years: Vestre’s warranties are lifetime anti-rust warranty for steel components, 15-year adhesion warranty for painted surfaces that have not been subjected to mechanical damage or corrosive chemicals etc, 15-year warranty on timber applies to damage caused by rot. Vestre works systematically to reduce its impact on the environment and it is their aim to obtain climate certification for all products. The first supplier of climateneutral furniture for urban environments, sustainability information can be downloaded from www.vestre.com

CHARLOTTE ROWE GARDEN DESIGN Charlotte Rowe is an award-winning garden designer based in London. Since establishing the Charlotte Rowe Garden Design studio in 2004, she and the team have designed over 200 gardens in London, around the UK and internationally. She also designed the Gold medalwinning show garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2014 with ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, ‘No Man’s Land’, which marked the centenary of the outbreak World War One.
54
She and the team are currently working on a range of country projects in Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire, however, she is perhaps best known for her town gardens and terraces in London. Her gardens range widely in scope and style, but all have strong architectural form, clean lines, good lighting, careful detailing and rich, luxuriant planting. 55
“The limited space in cities is an issue, so designing gardens in London is in some ways the most challenging and, at the same time, most satisfying,” says Charlotte. “Small town spaces require huge attention to detail – accurate dimensions and design, carefully chosen colours and materials and plants which provide year round interest – if any of these elements are left out, a small garden or terrace will simply not work.” “Our aim is to reflect as closely as possible the styling, decoration and colour palette of the client’s home so that there is a strong visual relationship between the inside and outside spaces.,” says Charlotte. “We regularly work closely with architects and interior designers to ensure that this is achieved.”“ My advice is always to keep it 56

Keep both the palette of materials and the planting scheme simple. Less is more when it comes to garden design.” Charlotte is a registered member of the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) and has won several industry awards for her garden designs and lighting schemes. She is also a mentor on the SGD’s Mentoring Scheme, and gives talks and speeches across the country and overseas, as well as lecturing regularly at Inchbald School of Design in London.

SMALL HAMPSTEAD GARDEN

The clients were not great gardeners and finally decided the garden had to be rescued when it was quite literally falling down. There were rotting collapsing fences and sleeper retaining walls and the artificial turf was full of moss and had no subbase. Plants were few and far between and there wasn’t really anywhere to relax in the space. The clients wanted the garden completely redesigned but keeping the layout of the lower patio by the house and retaining the openness of the upper area but introducing interest. The design upgraded the lower patio and steps to Jura beige limestone and a rendered retaining wall. The steps to the main garden were also widened to improve access, and to strengthen the link between the two garden areas which had previously felt rather separate. The use of stone instantly transformed the look and feel of the space, making it bright and clean lined. The main garden area was kept open, but a feeling of rooms within it was created by dividing the space into equal thirds using limestone paver paths, with the limestone further linking the upper and lower garden areas together. The sunniest third of the garden was turned into a raised patio with comfortable outside chairs; the change in levels adding interest to the garden.

The raised beds to the rear of the garden add height interest and make the space feel larger, but also more intimate. The planting here is a mix of shade tolerant shrubs and perennials chosen to provide a long season of flower and interest. The fences were all replaced with Jacksons horizontal ‘Hit and Miss fence’ which again contributes to making the space feel larger. A mixture of evergreen and deciduous flowering climbers were trained on the fence to soften it. Finally on the house side of the lower patio, the kitchen wall compromises a wide space of white plaster. This has been broken up by mounting two architectural wall panels, slightly raised from the wall that are backlit at night with LED strip lights. They provide perfect scattered atmospheric light for the table for evening meals outside. Other lighting through the garden highlights steps, entertaining areas and key plants.

Terrain Aeration has provided soil decompaction services at Hyde Park Terrain Aeration has provided services to relieve compaction of soil at Hyde Park. The company used its Airforce Terralift and SuperScamper machines. The latter works in conjunction with a towed compressor is therefore a lighter machine producing less weight on the turf surface. The primary areas to be treated were north of the Bandstand, an area of 10,200 m2 with sycamores and elms, and the ash tree circle north of Serpentine Road, an area of 892 m2 Before work started it was necessary to radar scan for underground services and mark out the areas to be treated. The Terralift hammers a hollow probe one metre into the soil, releasing a blast of compressed air to fracture the compaction and injecting dried seaweed which will expand and contract with the moisture content in the ground. The probe is inserted in spacings of two metres on a grid pattern, to ensure the underground fracturing overlaps. The resulting holes are top-filled with Lytag, lightweight aggregate to provide a longterm aeration and ventilation shaft which will encourage air and water into the root zone. The result is a healthier soil structure, the compaction is relieved and a stronger root growth is promoted. This particularly applied in Hyde Park in the areas around the trees.Terrain Aeration have also treated the area around Terrain .qxp_Layout 1 02/03/2018 15:57 Gardens Page 1 to the the Half Horse Chestnut group in Kensington
east of Broadwalk and in Regents Park, the area beneath the canopies of the first and second line of trees between Chester Road and Ready Money Fountain. An area of two thousand five hundred square metres beneath canopies of Norway maples at the southern end of Marylebone Green has also had the Terralift treatment. “We have used Terrain Aeration’s services for a number of years now,” says Ian Roger, Royal Parks’ Arboricultural Manager, “and their programme of decompaction of the soil beneath some of our most stressed trees will have long-term benefits, extending their viable lifespan, and ensuring their continued contribution to the amenity of the park and the environment.” Terrain Aeration | www.terrainaeration.co.uk | 01449 673783

Gismos, Gadgets and Good Design
IT & business innovations from beyond the housing sector Professor Dr Michael Benfield
In the early ‘noughties’ I ran a seminar for ‘Constructing Excellence’ on ‘Safety by Design’, followed a few years later by one on ‘Designing Out Waste’. The purpose in mentioning them is to emphasise the fact that, despite new products and new and updated regulations, like those dealing with high speed electronic communications networks (Approved document ‘R’), the house-building industry has made little progress so far this century. Back then I argued for buildings to be designed via ‘partnerships’ that embraced site constraints, programmed out risk, and ensured good immediate and ongoing communications with present and future stakeholders. I pointed out that to do so required ‘design teams’ who not only knew their legal duties & responsibilities, but who understood how the job would be done. In turn this meant grasping the logistics, getting to grips with handling and ‘Temporary’ works, as well as embracing snagging and maintenance along with the lifetime risks of the building both in construction, in use and decommissioning. Stressing that ‘good design’ is SAFE I also urged participants to accept their responsibility for making others aware of all of these risks. While today it’s pretty easy to specify IT related products for any building, like visual or fingerprint recognition access, remote video surveillance, cell-phone heat and light control, and so on, doing so efficiently remains a major challenge. Indeed, arguably this is more important than these ‘nice to have’ gismos and gadgets themselves. Home buyers and renters alike remain more concerned about the cost and speed efficiency of new home construction, their comfort, running, and maintenance costs. In several respects ‘Designing Out Waste’ was an extension of the earlier attempt to introduce business innovations from outside the construction industry. Techniques and disciplines like ‘Six Sigma’ and ‘Kaizen’ were applied across the whole design and build process to cut out waste in design time, scheduling delays, and prototyping errors, as well as material waste, etc. Once again an important element of this was the acceptance that building design needed to become a collaborative exercise, rather than the God given domain of any one person. As in the motor, aircraft and ship building industries, for example, recognition of the increasingly complex nature of the building enterprise was seen as increasingly important. Designing with partnering in mind emphasises communications, the importance of avoiding delays, and the need to programme out errors. It also recognises the need to really know what stocks & other ‘industry standard’ materials are readily available, how jobs will be done in practice, and the need for a better and fuller understanding of the building and manufacturing tasks involved. Grasping the totality of the logistics involved was seen then, and remains today, of major importance. Getting to grips with transport, ‘Right First Time’ and ‘Continuous Improvement’ processes were and are obvious candidates for expanding the horizons of the design team. Equating the notion of ‘Lifetime Costs’ with the avoidance of delays and the need to programme out errors, along with a sound knowledge of materials, processes and procedures remains vital. Although accepting that good design avoids waste, then and now many ‘professionals’ - used to a more relaxed regime - found and find this an unpopular constraint. Few, it seems are ready even now to accept responsibility for, and bear the cost of, any waste caused by them. As we move further toward ‘factory built’ homes clients and their professional advisors and consultants must understand that, to produce a building in the factory requires all elements to be determined in detail before work commences, rather than muddling through trying to resolve complicated design issues as a project progresses. While this is possible using sloppy ‘wet’ trade building techniques, where adjustments can be made in-situ, complex off-site manufactured elements are much more difficult to alter. Failure to understand this is both prejudicing MMC and costing clients and builders’ small fortunes to correct. Partnering for the whole design, supply and construction chain is a vital process that must be developed to correct this. Consequently, whilst moving with the times to incorporate all that is best and wonderful and time saving and comfortable, and desirable in any building design we undertake, manufacture, or build, I still find myself ‘shouting at the wind’ for fundamental shifts in professional attitudes. However, the ‘winds of change’ are blowing and I do detect small shifts. As construction moves ‘off-site’ into the factory these will greatly improve efficiency, quality, and affordable delivery of all levels of social and private housing.
Michael Benfield 2017
-Ends Prof. Dr. Michael Benfield is a Chartered Environmentalist. He predicts that current pressures for more housing will increase demand for Off-Site Production and MMC (Modern Methods of Construction) leading to new standards of professional capability, project design and the development of new management tools for the housebuilding and construction sector. Listing Chartered Builder, Chartered Surveyor and Chartered Manager amongst his credentials, he is an Affiliate of the RIBA and chairs leading UK timber engineers Benfield ATT. Based in Caldicot, Monmouthshire, they are a ‘full service’ timber Design and Build group using 3D design as a key efficiency tool. www.BenfieldATT.uk
The “Perfect” Pergola …creates fantastic extra outdoor barbeque and dining area for hostelry Faced with challenge of creating additional valuable commercial space in next to no time and at very low cost, the consultant landscape architect turned to specialist timber engineers Benfield ATT Group to produce a solution. Passed to ‘SOLIDLOX’, their quick build post and beam division, drawings for a robust click and bolt together latticework structure were soon winging their way for both landscape architect and publican client’s approval. Within a few days more all of the components were machined, fabricated, and sent as a ‘flat pack’ for the landscape team to erect themselves. “Wow, what a fantastic kit. So well thought out and easy to erect” was the response. “It does exactly what we wanted. We’ll certainly recommend you”.
