GATEway is Miami Country Day School’s summer academic program that provides rising 10th – 12th graders with an academically stimulating learning experience abroad. Students earn high school credit from Miami Country Day School, while immersing themselves in rich foreign cultures. Classes are taught in English, and no study of the foreign language is required. The program is open to both MCDS and non-MCDS students. For the summer of 2017, we are pleased to offer two sites— our GATEway ¡Madrid! program will celebrate its fourth year, and we will add a new site to the GATEway family, GATEway Montréal! in Canada. What will your child do to stand out from the rest and to grow both academically and as a person? It’s time to board the GATEway to success!

Academic Program
¡Madrid!
Montréal!
Students at each site will select one major and a cultural rotation minor that they will study throughout the four week program. Semester credit will be awarded for each major course, while a grade of P/F will be given for the minor course. Students should expect a unique educational experience that is experiential in nature and uses the host cities as both the classroom and the textbook. Upper School Director and GATEway program founder, Mr. Glen Turf, will serve as the director of both programs, with on-site coordinators in each location.
Madrid, Spain’s capital of 3.2 million residents, offers students a wealth of educational opportunities ranging from art to politics, language development to world class cuisines. Renowned art collections can be found in the Museo del Prado, the Reina Sofía Contemporary & Modern Art Museum, and the ThyseenBornemisza Museum, and allow both the art lover and the art novice alike to appreciate world class works up close and personal. With a modern metro that gets you to almost any part of the city within twenty minutes, students will quickly be calling this city home as they become true madrileños. Large boulevards, theater, high end shopping, the most famous of all bullrings, the largest royal palace in Western Europe, and the home to the Real Madrid soccer team, this cosmopolitan capital is a feast for any traveler. Madrid is a stop that all must make in their lifetime; although, you may find that once is not nearly enough.
As the second largest French-speaking city after Paris, Montréal enjoys a unique cultural and linguistic identity. With a French/English bilingual population, this “city on the mountain” gives every traveler a taste of Europe just a hop, skip, and a jump away. As a Montréaler for one month, you will move from the majestic mountains in the west to the old port in the east, bike the Île de Montréal, and spend your afternoon savoring such traditional dishes as poutine or pâté chinois. For the arts lover, this Canadian jewel is home to such renowned museums as the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, and even a wax museum housed in the Grévin Montréal. The outdoors fanatic will relish the water and mountain activities at nearby Mount Tremblant, while also walking the same steps of the famous Olympians of the 1976 Montréal games. In short, although Montréal lies just over our border, you are immediately transported to another world... and may never want to come home!

A Catalan Finale!
GATEway Madrid will hold its final week in Barcelona, Spain. As the capital of the unique region of Cataluña, Barcelona boasts some of the world’s most impressive sights, including Antonio Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, la Pedrera, and Casa Batlló. As a group, we will thoroughly explore this dynamic area known for its fierce character, its spectacular geography, and a charm that will take hold and leave you wanting more, más, plus, or més.
Quebéc City... the ultimate finishing touch!
GATEway Montréal concludes in Quebéc City where our GATEmates will instantly feel like they have left cosmopolitan life behind and arrived in a quaint European village. We will visit the most photographed hotel in the world, the Château Frontenac, the Alred Building (modeled after New York’s Empire State Building) and the Citadelle of Québec, one of the most historic and active military installations in North America. Stops at the Musée de la Civlilisation, the Plains of Abraham, and others will make it difficult to bid this region au revoir.
@GATEway This was the first time I have truly been able to use my French in everyday life, and it definitely has improved because of it. @GATEway Madrid Thank you for an unforgettable summer. A huge thanks to the chaperones for being so easygoing, understanding, and all around fun to be around. At first, I thought I wasn’t going to have a great time, but as the weeks progressed, this experience has been a great one. #grateful I loved this Gateway trip so much. This trip was amazing! I have not regretted coming here for anything. #noregrets #GATEway2016
Every year, my son comes home that much more mature, that much more worldly, and that much more kind-hearted and happy. To have this kind of experience at his age is incredible and he doesn’t know yet what he has experienced. It will sink in later in life. I think studying abroad while in high school is priceless. Learning another culture & language is something my daughter will carry with her for the rest of her life! She grew up and had to learn how to manage and she did it!!! This is my son’s second trip. He loves history, and we are both thrilled that he gets to appreciate history in a hands-on classroom. I cannot adequately express with words how wonderful the program has been for us. My child has travelled extensively, but he always learns and retains so much more in this environment. While MCDS offers its students many wonderful opportunities, this program certainly rates at the top.
Don’t miss the trip everyone will be talking about.
