MIAMI RESCUE MISSION * JEFFREY A. TEW EDUCATION CENTER
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
By Michael Ball
Ms. Paulina is a volunteer in the Jeffrey A. Tew Education Center. She believes education is important and enjoys helping others. She also recognizes the importance of career development to success in life and she recently assisted the Career Employment Skills class by conducting mock employment interviews. Ms. Paulina was born in Mexico but came to the United States as a young child and grew up in Miami. She studied political science, business, and economics at the University of Miami and has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and a Master of Business Administration degree. She is employed as an investment consultant. Thank you Ms. Paulina Your knowledge and skills have made a big difference to us! “And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills…” Exodus 31:3 C.F.W.C. By Fannie L. Johnson Residing in the Center for Women and Children is a blessing! We will have a special breakfast served to us from other churches every other Saturday for the month of May. On every other Friday, an organization will come in to cook lunch for us. A special event brunch is coming up in May on Mother’s Day. Is there any wonder why we are all struggling to keep our girlish figures? “Rejoice evermore” 1 Thessalonians 5:16 LIFE AFTER TEW

Before Daniel Feliciano entered the program at the Miami Rescue Mission, he suffered from alcohol, depression, and near-death encounters. Daniel entered the program and completed Alpha 83 in 2011. He went on to obtain his Associate in Arts degree. He is currently studying to obtain an Associate in Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences and has another year to complete the requirements. Last month Daniel was certified by the State of Florida Department of Health as a Clinical Laboratory Trainee. Daniel has said that despite his age and felony record, God told him, “It’s never too late.” Amen!
“Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not…” Psalms 71:18
STAFF PROFILE
By Daniel Lul
Rosa Pizzi is the newly hired Chief Operations Officer for the Miami Rescue Mission. Ms. Pizzi was raised in a small town in south central Texas and attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio where she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Before being employed at the Miami Rescue Mission, Ms. Pizzi was a Ministry Director for twenty-one years in Corpus Christi, Texas. She prayed to God for an opportunity to use her deeplyrooted passion for helping others on a larger scale. “The Lord answered my prayers and led me to the Miami Rescue Mission.” As C.O.O., Ms. Pizzi is able to reduce Mr. Brummitt’s workload in the areas of management, building community relationships, and fundraising. “I will do whatever it takes to preserve the Mission so that many others can have the doors of opportunity opened to them.” Welcome to the Miami Rescue Mission, Ms. Pizzi. We are certainly glad you are a part of our family! CREATIVE LIVING
By Tyrone Odom
In Creative Living we explored the differences in a person’s perspective when they are in a conflict. We role-played situations that were both hilarious and educational. On April 20, the Alpha classes attended the Joel Osteen presentation of America’s Night of Hope at Marlin Stadium. On April 22, guest speaker Robert Jarvis talked to us about his recovery and transition from homelessness and addiction to being blessed with a healthy life, a house, good work, and good relationships with family and friends. On April 29, Desmond Meade visited the class and spoke about his journey from homelessness and prison to entering his last semester in law school. This month, Creative Living is scheduled to listen to the Miami Symphony on May 3 at the Arsht Center. M.R.M. HEALTH CLINIC By Michael Ball About one month ago, the clinic opened an urgent care facility at Victoria Hospital. At the health clinic here, the staff is transferring patients’ charts to the computer rather than using electronic medical records. And finally, all staff members are being tested for tuberculosis.

Mother’s Day in the United States is held annually on the second Sunday of May. It’s a day to honor motherhood and a time to recognize mothers and mother figures. It’s a time to celebrate all the contributions they make to society. Many people give candy, gift cards, and flowers. A meal at your mother’s favorite restaurant--or some other similar treat--would be very appreciated by your mother or mother figures, including grandmothers, great-grandmothers, step-mothers, and foster mothers. In 1915, poet Howard Johnson said it best in his sentimental poem, M-O-T-H-E-R: M is for the million things she gave me, O means only that she’s growing old, T is for the tears she shed to save me, H is for her heart of purest gold; E is for her eyes, with love light shining, R means right, and right she’ll always be, Put it all together, they spell MOTHER, a word that means the world to me. Be sure to honor the special women in your life on Mother’s Day and every day.

CAREER EMPLOYMENT SKILLS By Lorene Butera Last month in C.E.S. class, the students were instructed in the do’s and don’ts of employment interviews. Afterwards, the students demonstrated what they had learned by participating in mock interviews that were video recorded. Reviewing the interviews together, each was able to give feedback to one another to further hone their interviewing skills. How one performs in an interview will not only determine if an employment offer is given, but may determine the salary offered as well. Therefore, to improve your likelihood of being hired, you must focus, prepare, and practice before the interview. HEALTH CORNER By Paul Peña According to the April issue of the Nutrition Action Healthletter, a publication of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, people ate more when they sat at a table with a person who ate quickly than someone who ate slowly. Be advised, if you’re trying to lose weight, it’s best that you select your eating companions carefully. Slow eaters would be preferred! ALPHA UPDATE By Anthony Frazer On April 8, Spanish Alpha 23 began their thirteenth week of discipleship training and Alpha 100 their eighth. Alpha 101 is scheduled to begin May 13 with thirteen discipleship trainees. These dedicated men have made a serious commitment. MOVIE REVIEW
