Two Bodies in movement
In this exercise, I used photography as well as sketched drawings to illustrate the space taken by two people, focusing on their movement and the minimum area needed to perform the practice of yoga.

The Script

The exclusive private pod and garden will be designed at the Aro Ha retreat Located in New Zealand’s Southern Alps; is a space to regenerate your body and mind. This award-winning retreat is a successful design where wellness traditions meets luxury. The name Aro Hā translates as “in the presence of divine breath”. After your final stay at the Aro Hā retreat, you will leave nourished, rejuvenated and reconnected with yourself and nature. When guests retreat to their private room for moments of solitude, they can step a few meters outside and enter a small welcoming space to embrace the breathtaking view of Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding alpines. The view and connection to nature is one of the most important considerations in terms of overall well-being and stress reduction, therefore this space is solely focused on embracing all aspects of nature. The accommodation is a range of single and shared eco suites with a minimalist design, the pod will mold into the landscape and effectively blend to the existing building. As nature is the main essence to mindfulness, the pod design escape begins with the aspirational garden. This garden space will make the occupants feel exceptionally connected with the outdoors, surrounded in the familiar grasses and plants of New Zealand, attracting the native wildlife. This space has a designed bench and storage unit to get changed and place any extra items away before entering the pod. The garden is an easy flowing area that allows the users to take a minute of rest, clearing their mind and body before their yoga session. This space will make you feel prepared, energized and tranquil. The scent of cedar wood throughout the area, calms the body and soul. The continuing scent and visual warmth of cedar wood continues when you walk into the yoga space. Compared to the open outdoor garden, the pod is a warm, enclosed and simplistic. The elevated box design of the pod will make the occupants feel embraced, with a grateful emotion when struck with the breathtaking view. The pod has an exclusive feature of being able to transition to become a hot yoga studio. The simplistic design allows you to completely focus on the movement of the body. Neutral wood, glass and stone are the main materials used in this space, allowing the building to seamlessly blend into the landscape. The large floor to ceiling south facing window soaks up the atmosphere, enhancing the mindfulness experience. After your yoga practice, you can continue your blissful journey by having a soak in the adjacent spa. There is a seating / changing area made of local materials, for you to take a breather before entering the self-sustaining spa bath. The water will furthermore cleanse your body and enhance your mindfulness experience. The mood of the garden is an exposed, open and tranquil area, a space to embrace breeze of nature, where the architecture does not overtake, but instead embrace the landscape. Compared to the yoga pod where you feel a sense of stillness and peacefulness. The feeling of support of the foundations of the pod. After leaving the yoga pod & garden, you will truly leave rejuvenated and reconnected to yourself and your wellbeing. Aro Hā.

Connected the pod and body in space by the simple drawing of a body, different front view movements of the arm. Drawing around areas, developing into a plan for the pod. Contrast between a simple box room for the yoga pod, with angled facades, areas in the garden.

The Pod & It’s Garden
Hot Yoga
Ceiling Plan @ 1:50
60 x 120 cm pannels
The exclusive yoga pod is even more luxurious than the communal one at Te Aro Ha Retreat as it is a hot yoga studio. Hot yoga provides many benefits; a heated environment provides more of an intense workout, raising the heart rate. This relaxes the muscles in the body; therefore, you can push yourself further holding the poses.
Benefits: - Improves flexibility - Reduces stress - Nourishes the skin - Concentration - Relaxation On the ceiling of the yoga pod, there will be six panels, that are generated by a solar power system on the roof on the pod. Because their heat is hyper-targeted, these heating panels allow the human body to absorb more than 99% of the heat that’s emitted, providing exceptional deep tissue penetration and detoxification. https://heatinggreen.com/what-is-infrared-hot-yoga/
