PROJECT 4 2020

01. P R E C E D E N T S Restaurant GĂźtsch / Studio Seilern Architect A N D E R M AT T, S W I T Z E R L A N D

The restaurant is made up of several pitched volumes sloping upwards with large windows opening up to the views beyond. It caters both for the aesthetic and the climatic challenges of a unique site and wide openings offer panoramic views over the valley of Andermatt. The exterior facade is clad in stone, resembling the architecture of the area, with exposed timber beams and timber-paneled walls on the interior of the Restaurant. A feature stone fireplace and sushi bar in the Japanese restaurant further tie the project back to the surrounding environment. This project has a lot of inspiring elements, with the same type of climate as Aro Ha Retreat. The link to the environment is very prominent which I am strongly going to take forward in my design.

02. P R E C E D E N T S AMANO Britomart, Auckland NZ.

Amano is a restaurant and bakery on the ground floor of a heritage building in Britomart Auckland. This is a large restaurant, but the arrangement of spaces have been designed as a sequence of spaces that feel intimate and cosy. Even though this is one big room, there is a large variety of zones that each have their own experience and personal touch. The adaptability in this Restaurant is a feature that I want to take forward into my designs, where there is a ability to re shuffle components of the space to work for the types of customers. Throughout the range of images you can see the love in the craft and care in the final details at Amano. The wooden forms uninitialized modern woodworking technology, being hand crafted by experienced designers who truly understand wood and its unique characteristics. The limited natural material colour palette is expressed in many different ways through the interior, but all coming together as one beautifully designed space.

A R O H A R E T R E AT Glenorchy, Queenstown, NZ.

Glenorchy is only a 1 hour drive from Queenstown, a perfect place for a detestation restaurant as the view can be considered one of the best in the whole of Aotearoa. Typically the guests that would come to the new restaurant would be on holiday in Queenstown as a couple or a small group. At the site currently they produce and grow their own vegetables, and have a strong focus on healthy, raw ingredients in the meals they produce. The menu of the new restaurant would be fairly similar to what is provided at the retreat.

Existing carpark, at back of the retreat so wont interrupt guests

The location for a new restaurant would be placed next to the Aroha room on the western side. This area is right near the existing carpark and will not interrupt the guests on their wellness retreat. Straight a head on the western side will be the breathtaking view of lake wakatipu, with a sunset over the alps in the direct distance. On the southern side there is the view of Mount Crichton, only a few kilometers away.

Developing drawings into designs. Understanding the human body and its interaction with space was very crucial in this project. There are a lot of different components to consider when designing a well circulated and functioning restaurant. After deciding where the best location of the new signature restaurant on the site would be, I was then able to start designing spaces that took into account the existing site, focusing on the view and the slope down of the site. Developing my concepts, I wanted to make sure that the focus point in my design was what made it a ‘signature’ restaurant, I then focused on three things: 1. Entrance: What did people see when they first walked in - creating a long walkway directing towards the morticians with a open skylight over top of the walkway to further connect to the exterior site. 2. Positioning: When dining, where abouts are you positioned in the restaurant? I wanted to make sure the design was correctly positioned to suit the view and creating a well circulated space so that the experience is well throughout for the guests. 3. Warmth: When the day turns into the night the focus on the view is taken away, this is where I then developed the concept of having horizontal feature fireplace walls to separate space and creating a warming cosy atmosphere in the Restaurant.

Te Hana - A destination Restaurant located in the Land of the mindful Aro Ha Retreat in Glenorchy, Queenstown. “Hana - to give radiance, warmth and to shine - Maori meaning This design focuses on the idea to create a moment of inspiration by capturing the atmosphere and remarkable altitude of the site. This is one of the best locations to fine dine with fresh cuisine with wide openings to capture the panoramic views of the South Island scener y. As you walk in you are lead down a timber path with an open skylight above directing you outside to the view. A open plan restaurant design, but with an arrangement of spaces that have been designed for different experiences that feel intimate and cosy. View towards Southern Alps

In the Restaurant there will be natural colours throughout the spaces to reflect the environment in the Southern Alps, which come together as one beautiful natural crafted space. Local schist stone from the Otago regions will be incorporated throughout the Restaurant, to complement the warming vertical fire elements throughout the lounge and dining. The finer details of the restaurant are not focused on perfection, but to create a space that is connected to the land and the focus on the detail of the breathtaking view down on Lake Wakatipu with the sourrounding southern alps.

D E TA I L Detail has been done of a horizontal fire place wall placed in the Centre of the restaurant. The choice of having a large feature fire drove my design. It divides the dining area into different zones and creates a beautiful atmosphere at night when the view is not seen at night time.
