IOWA

CLAY COUNTY FAIR

One of the country’s largest county fairs, the Clay County Fair in Spencer, Iowa, wrapped up in mid-September, bringing in more than 308,000 people over 9 days. C & B was there—advertising, outfitting 4-H & FFA exhibitors with C & B gear, displaying equipment, and working the John Deere Dealer Association building and lot. The John Deere Dealer Association is a partnership between C & B and 3 other JD equipment dealers in the Iowa/Minnesota area to promote and sell JD equipment and merchandise. Each of the member dealers brings equipment and provides employees to work the fair on behalf of the association, not their individual companies. The association has been in place at the fair for 18 years and the former Noteboom stores have been active members for many years. The store filled with JD toys and clothing is extremely popular, and this year even more fairgoers visited the building to watch the Iowa/Iowa State football game! Thanks to the employees from Spencer, Ida Grove, Sibley, Storm Lake, Lake Park and Jackson that worked the fair this year.

C&B OCTOBER INSIGHT.

JD FLEX DRAPER VS. JD TRADITIONAL FLEX HEAD Today, I’m going to talk about the advantages of using a flex draper over a traditional flex head for harvesting soybeans. I can’t believe we’re still having the conversation about harvesting soybeans this late in October, but mother-nature, unfortunately, can at times deal us some difficult cards here on the farm. Compared to what our fathers and grandfathers before us used, our current traditional flex platforms are amazing in their ability to harvest soybeans. But using a flex draper platform instead of a standard flex head has many advantages. Like I said earlier about mother-nature, the weather alone is probably the biggest factor. Tough, wet, cutting field conditions can be trying. The superb cutting efficiency of a flex draper and its 7.5” flexibility with on-the-go down pressure adjustability will help with tough, wet ground conditions like we have this fall. In addition, the flex draper’s wider feed section will allow for improved feeding into the feeder house compared to the traditional flex platforms. With a more even feed, the combine engine and machine will run smoother, which in turn will help with more precise threshing of soybean pods. Having the ability to run the reel higher is key in decreasing shatter loss from the header. Studies have shown that only 4 soybean seeds/square foot, on the ground, is equal to 1 bu/ac loss. Also, increased speed and torque will allow you to work faster as we’re up against the clock with the weather. Another advantage is that a flex draper offers better visibility compared to standard flex platforms. This is very important, especially with the wetter field conditions we’ve been having, because of possible foreign debris in the lower, wetter areas of the field, and of course the chance of a rock or two that the land roller missed. What is it that we don’t have much of during harvest? Time, and nice sunny harvest days, right? A flex draper will help you optimize that critical time on those few “perfect” harvest days that we get every fall. Customers have told us they can start around 1 hour earlier and stay in the field 1 hour longer over the traditional auger head! At times it seems like the wet, cold conditions are more variable every fall. Being more efficient in harvesting soybeans, even a matter of finishing a day sooner, can sometimes be enough to beat the storm. Josh Horstman Certified Crop Advisor

HUMAN RESOURCES TEAM EXPANDS The HR department has a new structure and new faces. Three Regional HR specialists, Shelly Boles, Adam Somers & April Star, will join HR Director Corey Mellegaard, Coordinator Ann Wold and Training Manager Larry Radi in serving the HR needs of C & B’s 800+ employees. They hope that with a larger HR staff they will be able to provide better face to face HR support for employees and the company. The Regional Specialists are the first point of contact for all employees as they need assistance with HR matters. They encourage employees if they have any questions to reach out to their regional HR specialist. Adam will be in Billings, Shelly in Sibley and April will office in Corsica alongside Corey and Ann. Larry’ office is in Billings.
