In Transit is the name of the magazine and of the special edition of the art magazine Parabol, which is published once a year. Both publications celebrate five years of the Hospiz’s art centre, an initiative of Florian and Ursula Werner in St. Christoph am Arlberg. Over the last five years they have succeeded in making art a highly recognisable feature of all the hotel’s activities, thereby giving the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel a truly unique character. While the magazine features, as usual, all the artistic activities and innovations, as well as the Artists in Residence for the 2012/13 season, the art magazine Parabol takes up the global theme of „on the road“ which is one that lies behind many aspects of the hotel, its location and people. In Transit symbolically combines Florian Werner’s activities as a hotelier with his passionate involvement in art. As a result, the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel, including all its artistic activities, has itself become a place of transition. It lies part way along an Alpine pass and for centuries has been a place of hospitality and shelter for people traversing the pass. Using the vehicle of art, Florian Werner taps into the constant reflective surface of this place, which his guests and visitors experience as an Alpine place of passage and of heteronomy, as well as a place of safety and hospitality. In order to appreciate this place and its conditions, it is important to experience irritations and incidents, such as artistic interventions which invade spaces, redefine places, provoke an exchange of glances and open up surprising perspectives. It is precisely this aspect of art which comes into play at the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel. It is incorporated into the structure of the hotel in the form of permanent artistic interventions and an artistic legacy, while new tales continue to be told in the long corridors of the hotel. This place is constantly changing, always on the move. In the debate over art, Florian Werner also finds himself in a process of transition, which has led him and section.a from just being passionate about art to having a passionate, professional approach to it. This inspires him to continually initiate new and surprising projects which demonstrate courage and vision, whether it is on or even in the mountain.

In the Kunstquartier Hospiz, the focus is on the artist instead of the guest. Accordingly, all activities at the Kunstquartier Hospiz are based on fair and open principles of community. In accordance with the tradition of the Brotherhood of St. Christoph, the Kunstquartier Hospiz serves the purpose of promoting and making visible a younger generation of artists at the start of their creative lives. The Kunstquartier Hospiz provides access to all artistic directions, from traditional artistic formats to New Media Art. The multi-layered programme at the Kunstquartier Hospiz is as dedicated to hotel guests as it is to lovers of art. Rafael Neff’s photographic work continues to focus on places which are characterised by their architectural and functional features – operatic stages and baroque libraries, or famous wine cellars. His visually precise series of photographs dissects the places portrayed in the search for what is important. In his series of portraits of famous wine cellars, such as Château Lafite-Rothschild, the artist plays skilfully with the media of symmetry and the precise orchestration of light in order to make the spatial dimensions visible and comprehensible and, as a result, to convey the special nature of the place.

Cristina Fiorenza’s painting focuses on people in their everyday environment and, in the process, she helps ornamentation find a new Renaissance. The dresses worn by her silent protagonists, the carpets, floors and wallpapers in the interiors portrayed, are rich in detailed patterns. These set pieces stand out from the background like collages and demand their own separate position within the overall visual structure. In contrast to this is the way she reduces everything to the purely functional in the backgrounds of her work. Sober, bleak and stereotypical estate architecture stands out in the form of soulless layers of floors, windows and balconies. Cristina Fiorenza’s creations tell us about this incongruity, and about isolation and loneliness.

Maria Anwander, H.A.I.R. award winning artist in 2012, seeks through her artistic work to provoke a consistent debate about the way art operates, the way it is standardised and regulated. She intervenes in this system, sometimes in a very ironic manner, in order to get round it or expose it. So, over several years, she has stolen name plates from international museums and art institutions, interpreted them in her own artistic style and displayed them in an exhibition. She blew a kiss to the Museum of Modern Art in New York when she broke the rules and left a trace of lipstick behind in one of the exhibition rooms. Methods of appropriation and the question of authorship of an artwork are constant themes in her work.

Born 1965 in Kurgan, Siberia/RU Course of study in Moscow/RU Lives and works in Vienna/AT Lena Lapschina’s complex artistic work is defined by its preoccupation with the interaction between situations in individuals’ daily lives and their effect and relevance to society. Her conceptual approach takes the form of photographic and video works. On her travels the artist films and photographs situations of daily life, which she mixes with and alienates from scenes from the world of the media. There are always very close and intimate aspects and moments of private observation, which she deals with publicly in the context of her art. The work she has created for the stairwell of the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel deals graphically with the hotel’s location and history in an ironic manner.

Isabel Haase Born 1975 in Vienna/AT Course of study in Munich/DE Lives and works in Munich/DE
In her artistic work, Kirsten Helfrich occupies herself with themes involving beauty and transience. In her work the artist reacts to ideals and that dominate our society but negate its reality, by means of various media. Whether it be the beauty myth of the fashion magazines or the protective idea of the statue of a saint, Kirsten Helfrich reveals the superficiality of these phenomena in her artistic transformation. Isabel Haase’s artistic work is also characterised by the use of various media. Through photography, video, objects and installations, she explores themes such as the relationship between public and private spaces, just as she includes objects of daily life. In addition to fine, clear aesthetics, her work also subliminally radiates a great deal of discomfort and unrest. Through subtle changes, everyday objects are given new, unexpected meanings that confuse and amuse viewers.

Born 1960 in Daun/Eifel/DE Course of study in Berlin/DE and Montpellier/FR Lives and works in Cologne and Daun/DE Franziskus Wendels deals with the theme of ”light“. He is especially interested in artificial light in the context of the city. The brightly lit city is to him a symbol of our ”Enlightened times” with all their ambivalence. He has created three installations for the Hospiz Galerie St. Christoph. In the expansive rooms of the basement boiler room, the observer sees things that at first glance seem to have been placed there arbitrarily. However, when the lights go out, these become a landscape with enormous spatial depth. These works subsist on the tension between the images of day and night. The same can be said for a series of graphics. two stories entering a dialogue with one another are told on eight sheets.

Born 1966 in Vienna/AT Course of study in Vienna/AT Lives and works in Vienna/AT The artist, Christian Hutzinger, has developed a distinctive visual language in his painting, collages and spatial intervention installations. His preferred colours vary within a palette of vivid shades and find formal expression through rigid compliance with themes. In a world of signs and pictograms, the artist has created over time his own artistic vocabulary in order to tell his story. The simple shapes, ellipses and capsules against monochrome backgrounds act virtually as substitutes, as synonyms for events. The play of colours, shapes and sizes are the parameters Hutzinger works within. Spatial interventions, the painted interconnection between images and spaces, open a discourse with the viewer and establish an immediate relationship with their surroundings.

Born 1980 in Graz/AT Course of study in Vienna/AT Lives and works in Vienna/AT Gallery: Lukas Feichtner, Vienna/AT Hospiz Art Prize 2011 In his installations Alfredo Barsuglia questions the permanence of glamour and celebrity culture. What are the mechanisms for accepting beauty, how do they operate and via which media are they conveyed and reinforced? In the process Barsuglia plays with stylistic elements from fairy tales as well as with erotic references and allusions to the world of show business. Some of his extensive installations, which are in the trompe l’oeil tradition, are portraits. In these Barsuglia does not depict individuals, but examples of a social condition. He is interested in the daily rituals and presents these in relation to celebrity culture – the things we are all accustomed to do naturally and which, for exactly that reason, escape our notice.

Born 1980 in Bregenz/AT Course of study in Vienna/AT Lives and works in Berlin/DE Ruben Aubrecht’s artistic work systematically grapples with the concept and understanding of reality. The choice of medium also plays a role in this questioning. So, for example, he consistently tests the boundaries of the video medium. The results arising from this confrontation are light and cryptic in nature and toy with our expectations, without having to deliver on them. Another constant element in his artistic work, in which he collaborates more and more with Maria Anwander, is its involvement with the system of art and its conditions.

Their evocative approach, their touch and transcription in the true sense of the word are based on fundamental research. They emerge time and again like lightning flashes with political implications which are critical of society. At the same time, the other view, the reversal of observational relationships, is an important constant in their self-conception as artists.

These linear pictorial structures are the result of repeated layers of paint and the subsequent exposure of deeper layers. Quite deliberately he uses a selection of images that are characterised by the medium (he often uses celebrities as models), which he alienates even further, deconstructs and encodes in the course of the painting process in order to expose an unequivocal legibility.

A graduate in philosophy, she is inspired by works such as Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus, Spinoza’s Ethics or books by Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Her drawings create a symbiosis of structural elements and personal, associative motifs which she connects to differentiated, complex and unique images.
