Strawser Auctions Presents
Fine Majolica for the Connoisseur October 31st 2015, Alderfer Auction Center, Hatfield, PA Welcome to Strawser Auctions second and ground breaking 'Fine Majolica For The Connoisseur' auction. After the huge success of the first 'Fine Majolica For the Connoisseur' auction last November, Michael Strawser, President of Strawser Auction Group and founder of the Majolica International Society, together with the World's premier Majolica authority, Nicolaus Boston have sourced, researched and presented for sale, an incredible collection and one of the greatest auctions ever of Fine Majolica. The auction, a selection of 400 pieces encompassing the best from all the greatest 19th century Majolica Factories including Minton, George Jones, Wedgwood, Brown Westhead Moore & Co, Holdcroft, Massier, Lonitz and an excellent selection of quality Palissyware from the kilns of Renoleau, Barbizet, Sargent, Pull, Landais, Brard, Pinheiro, Mafra, Cuhna and more, many being beautiful Museum examples and exciting 'never seen before' pieces. Collectors can buy with confidence with the confidence that rarity and quality have been paramount in this expertly selected collection of important, whimsical and decorative Majolica. Michael and Nicolaus are especially proud to be able to offer our front cover piece, the Magnificent and Important Minton Prometheus Vase. This monumental, Minton Majolica Museum and Exhibition piece, depicting the story of Prometheus who stole Fire from Zeus, the sculptural design making reference to fire, the fire which heats the kilns that transform clay to objects of beauty and desire. The large ovoid turquoise ground body, modeled with two large scroll handles decorated with armour and bearded soldiers bound by chains, the lid with the dramatic scene of a large open winged Eagle plucking the liver from a chained Prometheus, this being his punishment for stealing fire from Zeus. Our back cover is illustrated with the extremely rare and desirable Hugo Lonitz Foxes and Ducks Game Tureen, one of a collection of thirty rare Lonitz pieces. Modeled with foxes chasing ducks around a tree trunk and a large frog sat on the lid, this design is probably the most sought after Majolica tureen in today’s collectors World. This fantastic example boasts the illusive interior dish, the liner which the game pie would have been cooked in before being presented on the table in it's magnificent lidded tureen. There are only three of four known examples of this tureen and only two of which have the liner. This piece is the jewel in the crown for both collections of Majolica and Hugo Lontiz pieces. A fine collection of teapots are included with the selection beginning with the only known example of the important Minton 'Bat' teapot. This only known, important and whimsical teapot with panels depicting flying storks and swimming turtles, an outstretched bat to the lid, is a fantastic example of 19th century design, borrowing Oriental motif being applied to a traditional English shaped teapot. Probably the work of Dr. Christopher Dresser (The Father of Modernism) for Minton, this teapot shows strong graphic, modern design together with traditional Victorian whimsy, the outstretched bat adorning the lid, almost like a character from a Disney Movie. The swimming turtle panel to one side relates directly to a Minton Majolica jardiniere that is attributed to Christopher Dresser and included in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum. We expect the Bat teapot to fly! Michael says "The 'Fine Majolica For The Connoisseur' concept has really excited collectors, knowing that once a year, there is the opportunity to study and buy with confidence from a selection of pieces that have been handpicked, vetted and catalogued by Nicolaus and I. With our combined Majolica experience of over sixty years between us, we are confident that our advise is second to none". Michael and Nicolaus would be delighted to meet you personally at the Alderfer Auction Center, Hatfield, Pennsylvania on the 31st of October. Please join us in this exciting Majolica event.....it will be fun! Warmest regards, Michael and Nicolaus 'Fine Majolica For The Connoisseur' 2016 is available to view online and in full detail at www.liveauctioneers.com/browse/seller/strawser.auction

THE MONUMENTAL MINTON
PROMETHEAN VASE 297. A Very Rare and Important Monumental Minton Majolica ‘Promethean’ Vase c.1875. Designed by Victor Etienne Simian’.Modelled as a two handled ovoid vase and cover with circular pedestal base, each scroll handle designed with a captured bearded man bound at the wrists and ankles on either side, the handles terminating in shields and a winged helmet against the turquoise body, the domed cover surmounted by a dramatic grouping of a swooping eagle attacking the bound and scantily clad Prometheus, the pedestal base decorated with laurel leaves and climbing snakes. The Minton Prometheus Vase depicts the Greek mythological story of Prometheus who stole fire from Zeus to give to mankind. As punishment, Zeus had Prometheus bound to a rock and a vulture sent to steal his liver. Examples of the Promethian Vase were exhibited at the Centennial International Exhibition Philadelphia 1876 and The International Paris Exhibition 1878 where it was described as ‘one of the noblest pieces ever produced’.The Minton Prometheus Vase would be recognised amongst Majolica collectors and scholars of the 19th Century as a Tour De Force of the Victorian ceramic industry and also an important exhibition piece. With the manufacture and subsequent display at International World Fairs, Minton was announcing with these monumental Majolica pieces that they were the greatest pottery and porcelain manufacturers of the period. Pieces such as the Promethean Vase would have been highly expensive and would have graced the most salubrious homes, palaces and art galleries. Versions of the Prometheus vase are included in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Manchester Art Gallery. H. 48” $45,000-50,000 Victor Simian, the French sculptor of the vase moved to Britain in about 1860. He founded his own workshop and designed for the pottery industry. As an apprentice at Minton’s Simian studied at the Stoke-on-Trent School of Design from 1849. In 1852 he became one of the first students to be awarded a National Art Training Scholarship to the School of Design at Somerset House (the forerunner of the South Kensington Museum, later the V&A). He stayed with Minton’s until 1875, when he left to join Wedgwood as chief designer.

Extract and etching taken from page 224 of ‘The Masterpieces of the Centennial International Exhibition,’ Philadelphia 1876 Author: Prof. Walter Scott, published 1877 Debbie & Barrie, Philadelphia.
‘Several of the choicest pieces in this collection have already been illustrated in the pages, and now we add another, in the engraving on this page, of the PROMETHEAN VASE. This vase is equally remarkable whether we consider the quality of the workmanship or the art displayed in its design. For the former it will be sufficient to say here that it is absolutely without flaw, and the reader can see for himself how fine and harmonious are all the features of the ornamentation. The vase is of ovoid shape, somewhat flattened at the top. The neck is short and narrow, without ornamentation, and the mouth is covered by a cap. Around the base are several serpents, issuing from rock-crevices, and stretching upward toward the stem. On either side of the body are the medallions, with relief-masks, serving as brackets to the uprights to form the handles To these are chained male figures vigorously modeled, exhibiting, in pose and expression the agony of their position. Surmounting the rock is the figure of Prometheus, chained and bound to the rock, while perched with extended wings upon his thigh is the vulture tearing at his vitals. The artist has here treated his theme with great skill, and not the least meritorious feature in the whole is the manner in which attention is concentrated on these three figures by making the other parts of the vase severely plain.’
