Michael Strawser, President of Strawser Auction Group and founder of the respected Majolica International Society, together with the World’s premier Majolica Authority, Nicolaus Boston, have once again combined their 65 years of experience to offer this exciting 420 piece auction of the finest Majolica and Oyster plates. This years selection, sourced from around the globe, includes pieces from every great Majolica Manufacturer, every item chosen for it’s rarity, quality and charm. Discerning collectors, Museum Curators, Decorators and Antique Dealers can buy with confidence with the knowledge that each piece has been inspected, researched, appraised and catalogued. Michael and Nicolaus are especially proud and excited to offer several pieces that neither had ever seen before, especially the wonderful quality pair of Hugo Lonitz life size hawks that grace the front of the catalogue (lot 183) and the delightful and charming Minton insect and butterfly vases ( lot 257). Our back cover piece, the Important Copeland 1876 Centennial Memorial Vase, which we’re delighted to have included, is in no doubt a major 19th century documentary piece and will most certainly be purchased by a Museum. The Minton Tet-a-tet (lot 44) is a delightful example and so rare to find complete including the thistle creamer. The wonderful Minton Leafage candlesticks (lot 43) are a perfect accompaniment to the tet’a’tet, what dining table would not look beautiful with this arrangement. The George Jones ‘Asia’ Compote ( lot 62) designed as two camels beneath palm tree is especially rare and desirable and an exciting addition to the catalogue as is the whimsical and charming George Jones Donkey condiment set ( lot 66). Michael is also pleased to be able to offer The Iconic Minton Majolica ‘Bunny’ Dish (lot 47), which is possibly the most famous Majolica piece ever produced. This years auction also includes a small collection of American Etruscan Majolica by Griffin Smith and Hill, each a rare piece and worthy of being included amongst the best Majolica manufacturers. 13. A Rare Minton Majolica Gothic Revival Plate c.1860 The Designed by A.W.N. Pugin The eight-lobed plate, the rim decorated with raised ochre quatrefoils on a cobalt blue ground, the centre with raised green glazed vine leaves and ochre grapes with a maroon ground around a central cobalt blue and ochre circle comprising white tudor rose surrounded with a band of ochre trefoil shapes against a cobalt blue ground. A Porcelain example of this rare plate can be seen in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 9 1/2” $300 - $400

14. A Very Rare Minton Majolica ‘Punchinello’ Card Holder designed by Paul Comolera c.1875. Only two known examples. Modeled as a brightly glazed Punchinello leaning over a post, all upon a brown glazed rocky ground, 11”. The fashion for decorative card holders or menu holders followed the introduction of Art dinner cards, an idea from France that had spread to England by the late 1860’s. Puncinella, often called Punch or Punchinello in English, is a classical character that originated in the commodia dell’arte of the 17th century and became a stock character in Neapolitan puppetry. Punchinello was the inspiration for the 19th century British puppet show ‘Punch and Judy’. Punchinello was also a short-lived American satirical magazine inspired by the English publication Punch, it ran in weekly editions from 2 April 1870, 10” $2000 - $3000

22. A Handsome George Jones Renaissance Revival Majolica Wine Cooler and Cover. 1875 22 1/2”h, marks, shape no 342. Of compana shape with a tapering base decorated with vines and grapes, the deeply modeled bearded satyr-head handles topped with acanthus-leaf clusters. The lid with three rams and interlocking horn handle. A painted example of this vase was exhibited at the Vienna Exhibition 1873 and was illustrated in Llwellyn Jewitt’s Ceramic Art of Great Britain 1883. See Karmason Stacke 2002 p.90 top left. The circular bowl with blue border, white flower heads between brown framed fretwork terminating in green acanthus, the centre with a hand painted scene of a cherub amongst the clouds. Probably painted Thomas Kirkby. An identical shaped 16th century Bernard Palissy dish was exhibited at the London International Exhibition 1862 which was the inspiration for this Minton dish, 9” $500 - $700

A Desirable and Iconic Minton Majolica ‘Mushroom’ tureen c.1875 modeled as an oval fern and ivy tree trunk with leafy green ground, fixed under tray, with a mischievous fox at either end watching two unsuspecting mallard ducks, the lid modeled as the top of the tree trunk with trailing ivy and a large mushroom handle, 16”w, 7 ½”h. 39. An Excellent Quality Minton Majolica ‘Monkey and Rooster’ Teapot and Cover c.1875. The cobalt blue ovoid body with a decorated circular shield, the tail formed as a mischievous monkey holding reigns and driving a rooster to the front and forming the spout, the oval cover modelled with a green radiating pattern with a yellow border and the finial formed as a snail. 38. A Rare and Stylish Minton Majolica Japanese inspired Aesthetic Movement Teapot and Two Associated Cups and Saucers, all in the style of Christopher Dresser. The teapot with an emerald green glazed body and spout with an amber and red strap binding a ‘u’ shaped branch handle, 6 ½” Each cup glazed in French blue and a turquoise interior with circular green lily pad designs to the underside and a twig handle, all supported on three spike feet and sat upon a french blue circular saucer decorated with green lily pads to to the centre. These there pieces come from a Minton cabaret set comprising of a tepaot, tea kettle, cream pitcher, sugar bowl, two cups and saucers and a tray. Teapot 6 1/2”h $1200 - $1500

An excellent quality Minton Majolica teapot designed by Dr. Christopher Dresser c1875, inspired by a Japanese red ware shape, the turquoise ground body with a band of bamboo around the centre and a deep band of orange around the shoulders, the domed lid with a bamboo cane for a handle, the high arched handle and spout formed as bamboo canes, date code 1876, 7” $800 - $1200

41. A very rare George Jones Majolica Kettle in the Japanese Style c.1875. This teapot, the only known example, is illustrated in ‘Majolica’ Nicholas Dawes, page 120 and is thought to be designed by the son of George Jones, ‘Horace’, who studied at the Government School of Design. The teapot modeled in the manner of modernist electroplated teapots designed by Christopher Dresser. Modeled as a Chinaman in brightly glazed traditional dress and clutching a mask with the spout emerging from its mouth, the tail formed as the Chinaman’s pigtail, his head forming the cover with his hair comb forming the finial. 43. An Extremely Rare and Elegant Pair of Large Minton Majolica ‘Leafage’ Candlesticks c.1860. Only one of two known pairs. Each modelled as a baluster shaped column of thick green leaves around of stem of lighter green colour leaves supporting more green leaves forming the drip pan and holding a large open blossom with pink edges forming the candle holder and all on a circular cushioned base of lush green leaves, with an ochre band scrolling acanthus to the outer edge and a green circular foot rim. The style, quality and subject matter represent Minton’s early Palissy inspired pieces c.1850-1860, e.g. The Minton ‘Palissy’ Ice Stand’ c.1857 ( see pg. 102, Atterbury, Batkin)., 11 1/2”h $4000 - $6000

44. A Rare and Important Complete Minton Majolica Tete-A-Tete.1865 In the Chinoiserie Taste. Only one of three complete sets known. Comprising: Teapot, sugar bowl, creamer, two cups and saucers and a tray. The teapot form as a yellow lychee with green stem handle and spout with a leaf finial, the sugar bowl and cover formed as a yellow gourd with twin green stem handles terminating in leaves and berries and stem and leaves forming the finial on a deep purple cover, the cream pitcher formed as a thistle with bound twig handle and supported on undulating twig, the cups and saucers formed as yellow fruit with a turquoise interior, the body decorated with green stem and berries, the circular green leaf saucers decorated with leaves an blossoms with a central maroon medallion centred with a large white daisy with a yellow centre, the quatrefoil shaped tray with a green body and an elaborate yellow trellis with pierced panels of green leaves and pink berries. $20,000 - $30,000. 45. A Charming Minton Majolica rabbits Bon Bon Dish c.1875, modeled as two back to back white rabbits peering out of a thicket of fern leaves, long grasses, and blossoms all set under a pale green lettuce leaf bowl and supported on a maroon ground, straight sided base, 9 ¾”w, 4 ½”h $800 - $1200

46. A mischievous and beautifully colored Minton Majolica cat milk pitcher c.1874, naturalistically modeled as a ginger, white and black cat, seated on its haunches, trapping a mouse under its right paw, its tail forming the handle. Patent registry design for 1874, shape no 1924. Height 10”. Probably designed by Paul Comolera. Comolera is best known for his large models of animal and birds which were often based on life studies. 172. An Important Monumental Minton Majolica Renaissance Revival Cistern and Liner c.1860 All in the Della Robbia style. Probably designed by Piere Emille Jeanest. The large oval French blue bowl with a large rams head to each side, green tendrils and vine leaves omitting from both sides of each, the liner with a deep border of scrolling tendrils above turquoise glazed fluting around a central oval medallion of stylized leaves and tendrils, the bowl and liner sat on the backs, at both ends, of a large putto omitting from large acanthus scrolls, the scrolls forming the support for all above and all sat upon a deep oval pedestal base with a broad band of cabochon and ogee arched panels and stylized leaves and blossoms, an undecorated band of maroon, one of green and one of orange to the outer edge and foot rim. Sometimes referred to as a Baptismal Font, the shape is listed in the Minton shape books as ‘ cistern’. Few examples of this monumental exhibition piece exist and those that do, rarely have retained the large liner. An example can be seen in the stereographic view of the display of the London retailer, A.B.Daniell and Sons at the Philadelphia 1876 Centennial Exhibition. $8000 - $12000

Each modelled as an octagonal shaped straight sided vase with panels of yellow zig zags as a back drop to scenes of Oriental style beetles, butterflies and green fauna, the top edge decorated with a running band of folded ribbon, the bottom edge with panels enclosing pink diamonds, each with twin angular handles with a circular cut out, all supported on plain small, brown brackets poles to each corner. This design represents a conscientious move away from Victorian revivalism and toward the strong, bold Oriental simplicity. Although not proven to be the work of Christopher Dresser, the strong, Modern Japanese inspired subject matter and feel is very much in his style.
