That was the conclusion of recent studies released by BIO/Battelle and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), which concluded that “Michigan has the assets to support and grow bioscience, particularly in the presence of its major research universities.” The academic bioscience R&D expenditures totaled $1.2 billion in fiscal 2012 with industry payrolls reaching nearly $2.5 billion for the same period. Michigan is home to over 600 bioscience companies that employ ~40,000 in the pharmaceutical, medical device, diagnostics, bio-agriculture, food/nutraceuticals, bio-based products, bio energy, informatics and health IT, and clinical research. The state’s contract research industry alone has the depth to handle business from across the globe at any stage of development. Michigan’s SmartZones fuel a robust pipeline of Michigan bioscience companies. SmartZones are distinct geographical-based business accelerators where high-tech businesses gain from collaborations between local universities, industry, research organizations, government agencies and other community resources. 21st Century Investment Fund represents a bold initiative to diversify Michiganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economy and stimulate job creation in emerging technology sectors. Using tobacco settlement dollars, it has already invested >$200 million in over 100 commercialization projects in the life sciences, advanced manufacturing, alternative energy, and homeland security/defense sectors through business plan competitions. In addition, the 21st Century Jobs Investment Fund was deployed to invest $109 million in venture capital and private equity funds.
