Marathon Man

By Scott Sullivan

L

egend holds that Phidippides, armed with news of Athenian victory over the Persians, ran 26 miles from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens, cried, “Rejoice, we conquer!” and on cue died.

Who can be surprised that “doing” marathons would become a fad two-plus millennia later? I say “doing” instead of “running” because marathoners’ ranks are swollen by those who walk parts or all of today’s 26.2-mile distance. Purists -- including me in my younger years, when racing did not mean strolling while talking on cell phones and eating donuts -- complain going less than all-out cheapens the accomplishment. Others believe that, in the Greek spirit of democracy, it opens doors to a milestone achievement and fitness benefits for everyone. The fact is, entrance fees from the multitudes who “do” marathons make it possible to pay winners -- who train and sacrifice far more to run them fast -- handsome prizes. Getting people off couches to walk or jog towards a goal makes the sum of us healthier and more appreciative of elites. I spoke years ago with a friend who,

4

after finishing a marathon in four-plus hours, met many-time Boston Marathon champ Bill Rodgers, who had won that day’s race in half the time. My friend was awestruck -- and so was Rodgers. “I could never keep running for four hours!” he exclaimed. “The only thing dumber than running a marathon is running two of them” was my opinion, based on experience, for years. As a hardcore runner in my mid-40s, I ran my first 26.2-miler in a fast enough time to qualify for Boston. Boston was the experience of a lifetime. I also bungled it, training the winter before on mild hills around my neighborhood. The Beantown course, with its hard streets and steep early downhills, trashed my quadriceps. By the time I reached “Heartbreak Hill” at around 20 miles, my legs had no shock absorption left. I was forced to walk/jog in front of thousands of cheering spectators, far from the finish that I had fantasized. Only my legs screamed louder. “If I talk about running another marathon, remind me of this,” I told my wife afterward. Not to worry. I have since covered many marathons as a journalist, re-experiencing through thousands of friends its pain, strain and revelation. I’m still content to run shorter distances. I still go hard these days, just not fast. At age 54 it’s not in my mind or legs any longer. Other follies, such as parenthood and writing, are as maddening and rewarding. Running teaches me that striving means you never lack opportunities to be humbled. What we conquer is something imaginary: limits. In that, our rejoicing goes on and on. MR

Shamrocks and Shenanigans 5K Capped at 1,500

1,500 runners took advantage of spring-like temperatures for the 10th annual Shamrocks and Shenanigans race in Ann Arbor. By Tracey Cohen

ANN ARBOR (3/16/09) — Two is better than four. Such was runners’ consensus regarding loops on a new course at the 10th annual Shamrocks and Shenanigans 5K, a fundraiser for Save A Heart. Last year’s four-loop course, flooded with more than 1,100 participants, was a test in persistence and performance. This year’s entries appreciated the much-improved field spread and traffic flow over the double-loop route. University of Michigan seniors Laura Newcomb and Caitlin Brody enjoyed the mix of hills and flats as well as the scenery found on Main Street. They also loved the free Irish pint glasses handed out to the first 1,000 finishers.

6

Michigan Runner - May / June 2009

With spring-like temperatures making their already-quality race even more attractive, organizers were obligated to limit the field to 1,500 due to road constraints of downtown Ann Arbor. The fun and good cheer were uncapped, however. A sea of green streamed through the streets as many competitors donned their brightest and silliest garb in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day. Rache Ingle of Northville, flamboyant in bright-green knee socks and tutu, explained that on spotting the items in a store, she knew that she must buy them for this race. Ian Forsyth, more serious, was all business from start to end as he dominated the field in the winning time of 15:22. Jennifer Gunderson led the women in 18:32.

Dave Furey and Rebecca Price paced the masters in 16:55 and 20:00 respectively. At the opposite end of the age spectrum were wee ones’ races. Peyton McCaslin, 4, ran the Kid’s Dash and “loved it … especially the ice-cream at the end!” Big sister Jordyn ran the Kids Kilometer and tired a bit on the last hill, but still plans to run it next year. In addition to yummy treats, every child received a medal upon completion of their chase. Organizers, delighted with the continual growth of the race and dollars earned to benefit the U-M Congenital Heart Center at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, say wheels are already in motion to accommodate more participants and further improve the course. For complete results and to learn more about Save A Heart at C.S. Quick on his heels was Patrick Hogan, 21, of Holland, placing second in 15:30. The women’s 5K race was dominated by Abigail Nelkie, 26, of West Branch. Nelkie finished in 18:29, ahead of Rachel Trombley, 21, of Reese, second in 19:55. Not rattled by the wind, Nelkie exceeded her goal of running sub-19 minutes to win here for the second-straight year. Nick Stanko, 28, of Ann Arbor won the men’s 8K in 24:41. BAY CITY (3/22/09) – The road, as the Irish blessing says, rose up to meet more than 3,000 runners and walkers at the 36th annual Al Kayner’s/St. Patrick’s Day Road Races. The wind, however, was definitely not at their backs. Although breezes blasted in all directions, participants didn’t let it dampen their festive spirits. From full green outfits to silly hats to all-over body paint, they celebrated the Irish way. Top finishers rose from the green sea to claim fast times in the frosty weather. Former Saginaw Valley State University runner Nick Krus, 23, of Memphis won the overall men’s 5K with a time of 15:23. It

it was part of the Michigan Runner Race Series and I was hoping there would be some good competition. “It was really windy, so the group tucked in and it was slow in the beginning,” he went on. “At about three miles, the pace started picking up.” Katie Singer, 28, of Detroit won the women’s 8K in 32:05. It wasn’t long before the top walkers finished the 5K course. Corey Peyerk, 25, of Marysville (26:50) edged masters winner Johnny Olsey, second overall in 27:01. Debbie Topham, 56, of Mayville won first place in the women’s walk with a 29:57. Masters runners Greg Thomas, 40, of Clio and Bridget Scileppi, 41, of Freeland took top spots in their division of the 5K

Abigail Nelkie won for the secondstraight year in 18:29.

DETROIT (3/15/09) — Recession? What recession? Attendance boomed at this year’s St. Patrick’s Corktown Races, where a sea of humanity clad in Irish green flooded Michigan Avenue. A record 3,338 runners and walkers competed, by far the largest turnout in the race’s 27-year history. Many dressed as leprechauns, elves and other magic creatures. Others fashioned outfits resembling traditional Irish garb. Detroiter Katie Singer fifth overall in the women’s four-mile with a time of 25:42, fully embraced Irish heritage, wearing a kilt, green stockings with shamrocks on them, and a black t-shirt. “Nothing matches, but everything works with a kilt,” the auburn-haired Singer said. Everything worked pretty well for Paul Aufdemberge, 44, of Redford and Jackie Rzepecki, 30, of Rochester. Both went home champs in the four-mile competition. Aufdemberge, second behind Matt Fecht last year, ran away this time. His 20:33 was three seconds faster than last year.

“One guy stayed with me for the first mile and a half,” said Aufdemberge. “We ran together down Michigan Avenue, then I got a gap on him going around Campus Martius. I was able to enjoy it coming back on Michigan Avenue.” Following him were Anthony Pavicic, 26, of Sterling Heights (21:11), Chris O’Keefe, 46, of Belleville (21:13), Saeed Saleh, 18, of Detroit (21:22) and David Homann, 41, of South Lyon (21:35). Rzepecki, running Corktown for the first time, won the women’s race in 24:18. “I had knee surgery last June and this is my first race back,” she said. “This indicated where I’m at fitness-wise.” Rzepecki jumped to a big early lead which she never surrendered. “I went out too hard,” she said. “I was thinking if someone tried to catch me, I’d be in trouble.” No woman did. Julie Kado, 25, of Detroit finished second, 35 seconds back, in 24:53. Next came Mindy Houser, 30, of Franklin (25:15), and Regina Petit, 24, of Farmington Hills (25:23). Rzepecki enjoyed the race overall. “I loved running on the parade route,” she said. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade down Michigan Avenue took place immediately after the races. Corktown events are presented by The United Irish Societies and produced by the Fraternal Order of United Irishmen. The Downtown Runners and Walkers and Motor City Striders host the event. Fun included an almost two-mile walk and kids’ quarter-mile. Event proceeds help St. Patrick’s Food Programs. MR Michigan Runner - May / June 2009

Running’s Revelations By Dave Foley

out going on a diet.

Things you never thought about when you began to run:

That you would feel better the last half of a 30-minute run than you did at the beginning.

That running would become a habit and you’d actually want to run every day. That one day you would be able to run a half-hour and never get out of breath. That you would actually run a marathon. That you would not use bad weather as an excuse not to run.

That you might become a better athlete as an adult than you were as a kid. That if you stretched regularly, you would soon be able to touch your toes. That you could actually lose weight with-

That marathons might better be left to younger runners.

Things you never thought about when you were 39:

That your overall place meant nothing; your age-group place meant everything.

That you might feel like you ran the best race of your life and yet your times splits were slower than the year before.

That your daughter would beat you in a race.

That the only way you could post a personal best was to run a distance you’d never run before. That stiff muscles would force you take to two easy days after a hard workout rather than one recovery day.

That if there were less than 100 people in the race, you had a chance of winning the oldest-finisher award. That you might enjoy doing yoga. That the only time your legs weren’t stiff was when you took a few days off.

That subbing a cross-training activity might be a good idea.

That you would need to put sunscreen on the back of your head.

That you would buy ibuprofen in the large economy size.

That you were now running with a short choppy stride just like the old guys you used to watch.

That you would wear a half-size larger shoe size than 10 years ago. That your son would beat you in a race.

Things you never thought about when you were 49: That unless you brought your reading glasses, you would have to guess at what the small print on the entry blank said. That stiff muscles would force you to have three easy training days after a hard workout. That knees and ankles actually can make creaking noises. That you would read the medical column in a running magazine with more interest than the “How to run better” feature. That you would have bottles of ibuprofen in your desk at work, glove compartment and bathroom.

Michigan Runner - May / June 2009

Things you never thought about when you were 59:

That a 20-mile training run was a really long run.

That you could identify age-group competitors by their hair color.

12

That a 5K race would be as tiring as a 10K used to be.

That you would have a drawer full of race t-shirts and more running shoes than dress shoes.

That you would wake up early just to run.

That it would hurt more to run downhill than uphill.

That fear of straining your hamstring would keep you from making an all-out sprint to the finish. That your grandson would beat you in a race. That after a race, you did a warm-down walk instead of run. That your running role models are octogenarians rather than Olympians. That just being able to run is more important than being able to race.

And a final thing you never thought about when you began running: That many years later, despite the aches and pains that come with growing older, running still is fun and a daily part of your life.

MR editor emeritus Dave Foley, who originally published this in 1998, has revised it to reflect his perspective from 62 years -- going strong, if more creaky -- now. MR

My Favorite (Running) Things By Bill Kalmar

T

he opening lyrics from “The Sound of Music” are melodic and memorable:

than 25 years. I thoroughly enjoy the GT2130 series and the new 2140 will be my next pair. My first running shoes were Nike Daybreaks, but I am an ardent Asics fan now.

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens, Brown paper packages tied up with strings; These are a few of my favorite things.

Watch: After my 1987 Free Press Marathon, I treated myself to a Casio timepiece. It has been with me ever since and the battery gets changed every couple years. Maybe it’s time for a new watch, but this one certainly has stood the test of time, so to speak.

Newspapers often ask readers to list their favorite restaurants, hotels, hair stylists and pet groomers, to name a few. I have favorite running-related things which do not include woolen mittens or copper kettles. How many of these do you recognize?

Duathlon/Triathlon: Any event sponsored by 3 Disciplines Racing, headed by Kenny Krell, Ann Marie Kern and their talented support team, is on my to-do list.

Marathon: The Detroit Free Press Marathon has become one of the premier running events in the country. Participation has grown substantially, which I attribute to it having the only “underwater mile” run in the nation. The recent addition of a half-marathon has swelled ranks of runners too. Traversing the route in Canada while viewing the Detroit skyline is a scenic marvel. My Motor City Marathon 25th Anniversary pin from the 1987 event is still one of my favorite items. 10K: There are hundreds of 6.2-mile running events in Michigan. Space does not allow all of my favorites to be listed, but here are some: The Roseville Big Bird Run, held each November, just celebrated its 30th year and I have only missed a few. It started as a threemile loop and has since elevated itself, literally, to a crossing of the I-696 pedestrian walkway. In previous, now-discontinued routes, runners were treated to the early-morning aroma of a White Castle restaurant, which was better than a shot of Gatorade. The Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival 10K is more than just a run; it brings people from all over the nation to this idyllic, rustic beach town. After the run, a stop at the Pronto Pup stand, which has been serving hot dogs for more than 60 years. The Grosse Pointe 10K just marked its 29th year, so I am looking forward to its 30year celebration. Currently it is a three-mile loop on Lake Shore Drive. The inaugural race started in Grosse Pointe Park, then proceeded on Lake Shore through all the Pointes, ending at the Assumption Cultural Center in St. Clair Shores. It was limited to Grosse Pointe residents only, which didn’t endear me to my Harper Woods running buddies. Shoes: I have run in the Asics brand for more 16

Michigan Runner - May / June 2009

I participate in three duathlons each year: Hadley Township’s Big Fish event in June, the Craig Greenfield Memorial in Clarkston in August, and the Autumn Colors in Holly in September. The series also includes a triathlon for those who can swim — not me! I have had the thrill of winning several of these events in my age group, since there seem to be few senior citizens who can run and bike. And I turned 66 this March, entering the “66-to-death” age group, which means there should be even fewer participants. Medal presentations, here I come! Festival of Races: Hands down it’s The Crim in Flint, the granddaddy of all races. This will be my 22nd year in this gem of an event and there is none better. The variety of races, expo, flawless registration and pickup, routes and entertainment, including Cashew Corner, finishing medals and more make this an event others try to emulate. I have let the Kenyans beat me each year because they are our visitors and I want them to feel welcome. The wheelchair start at 7:30 a.m., prior to the 10mile marquee race, is awe-inspiring. Shirt: My collection of running shirts fills a closet in our home. The shirt that garners the most comments reads “I have a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell,” gleaned from a “Saturday Night Live” TV skit involving Will Ferrell, Christopher Walken and the rock band Blue Oyster Cult. Google “cowbell” and watch the video. Wearing this shirt during the Crim 10-mile race is a hoot, since many among the crowd lining the streets have cowbells. Running through their cacophony is quite an experience! Indoor Workout: When the weather is nasty, I run inside — and yes, that makes me a wuss! The Great Lakes Athletic Club in Lake Orion has an indoor track: 50 times around is five miles, which I complete in 50 minutes.

Presidential Run: I traveled to Washington, D.C., years ago for my job. Knowing thenPresident Clinton was an avid runner, I wrote and asked if I could join him on a morning jog. After clearance from the Secret Service and directions to the appropriate White House gate, I arrived at my hotel only to discover that my historic run had been canceled. Seems the President had other pressing business; wonder what that could have been! The look on the desk clerk’s face when he informed me of my call from the White House about running with the President was priceless. I told him my next run would be with Gandhi. Running Store: Hansons is my choice and favorite for running gear. The staff knows my specifics and always call when a sale is coming up. Running Magazine: None better than Michigan Runner. The complete listing of upcoming runs, race results and great stories makes this publication a must for every runner. Running has been a part of my life for more than 35 years. Everyone in my family — from my wife, Mary, to our children Cathy, MaryJo and Bill, Jr. — have at one time or another joined me in an organized run. Those are some of my favorite memories. Mary and I ran in Emily’s Run in downtown Detroit, where she won a muffler trophy since the event was sponsored by Midas Muffler. Some of you might remember Emily: She owned an office-supply store where the motto was “Say nice things about Detroit.” We sure could use that phrase today! MaryJo joined me often in Detroit’s Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, where our runs were often interrupted by friends we saw lining the route waiting for the start of the parade. Well, time to lace up my shoes. The sun is out, the snow has melted (at least for now) and it’s time for another run, hopefully without my favorite “warm woolen mittens.” As I run along the Polly Ann Trail near our home in Lake Orion, I just hope Pepe LePew is still hibernating!

Running Shorts with Scott Hubbard Trivia: What running film won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1981? FURTHER ADVENTURES (DEER ME). Winter ‘08-‘09 mirrored last year with too much snow plus long periods of numbing temps and wind. On four particularly-bad days I led different Riverbend Striders races on my mountain bike. If I wasn’t taking extra care to stay upright in the snow while fending off traffic, I was dealing with cold and wind that were downright miserable and halved the normal size of the fields. Between the conditions and task at hand, yes, things were difficult and borderline foolhardy, but somebody had to do it. Like the weather, my exercise routine has been similar the past two winters with more cycling than I cared for. A plantar faciitis problem lingered for eight months in ‘08, nixing running. An attempt to run again in October was aborted when the heel ache returned. This wasn’t a good development because I’d prefer to scale back cycling and ramp up running when weather goes bad in winter. The simple explanation: I can and will run outside in any conditions while cycling magnifies winter’s various moods, compromising any “fun” in the experience. Imagine yourself cycling for 90 minutes on a gloomy 25-degree day with 15-20 mph winds. Probably not your idea of a good time. Then there’s the matter of a filthy bike with a streak of water and mud up your backside on days with wet pavement. And, no, I don’t ride on snowy roads -- except that one time. Winter cycling is tolerable, better than nothing, a satisfactory alternative to running, worth doing and all that -- but I don’t have to like it. On the worst days I’ll cycle 30 minutes on a bike stand, watching music DVDs. I’m not a fan of the bike stand either. What I do like, whether cycling inside or out in the cold, is the activity, the pedaling, the movement, the engagement of my lungs, legs, eyes and the environment. I like being fit and able to hang with the boys on the 18

Michigan Runner - May / June 2009

Tuesday and Wednesday eve training rides from April through October. And the older I get, the more I appreciate how running and cycling have positively enhanced my life. This, my friends, provides primal motivation to saddle up on winter days; the benefits outweigh the temporary discomfort. With arthritis in my left foot and plantar faciitis in my right at bay, I began trotting and walking a mile in early January. Made steady progress, not in adding distance but being able to get out every other day troublefree. I was very cautious, gradually increasing the time run with one-minute walk intervals around the mile loop until I felt brave enough to run the entire way in mid-February. As of this writing in mid-March, I’m up to 20-minute runs, which is a significant benchmark: 20 minutes is my minimum to extend a streak and skip a day of cycling, if I want. By the time you read this, I hope I’ve extended the runs some and my streak of not missing a day of either running or cycling since December 31, 2003, is intact. If I reach July 1 without missing a day, I’ll exceed my previous streak PR of 2,009 days. Streaks require no special skills. They are about luck, pluck, a slice of time each day and good health. I hinted at an adventure in the subject title and, if you’ve followed this space in recent years, you’ve been treated to things that happen to me, unexpected stuff. Welcome to my world! The January thaw arrived Feb. 6 this year: over six days, most of the deep layer of snow in southeast Michigan melted. On the seventh, I had a 20-mph wind at my back cycling north on a road west of Linden, when movement and noise caught my attention. Turning my head right, I found a deer upside down in the snow, its right rear leg caught in a fence. My approach had agitated it, causing it to thrash about. It took three seconds to take that all in. A hundred feet later, I stopped, waited for traffic to pass and slowly made my way back toward the deer. Scooting closer, it became plain to me that the deer had failed to jump all the way over the fence. The melting snow must have given way when it jumped and its rear leg got snagged in a loop at the top of the fence. There it lay, wide-eyed and vulnerable, looking skyward. I figured maybe I could yank the leg out, however, looking at its

thrashing hooves as I got within 15 yards gave me pause. While thinking of a plan, I wondered if the deer could wiggle around enough to work itself free. So, I watched. My presence got the poor thing working hard and, little by little, it s leg came loose and finally it slid clear. I kept my eyes on it as it scrambled in the snow, watching to see if it was disabled. I didn’t know what I’d do if it was badly hurt, but it seemed like the right thing to do. It got to its feet, staggered in the snow and jumped sideways into the fence. It lay in the snow a moment, got up, staggered a few steps and jumped sideways into the fence again. I’d seen enough to leave it to fend for itself and turned to go. A truck that had passed me when I first stopped was down the road and I rode up to it. The guy inside said he was watching to see what I’d do. I told him my plan and added the thrashing hooves gave me second thoughts. He related a deer story with similar circumstances where he got kicked ... in the groin. I left after telling him I was glad the way things had turned out -- in this case. The deer had disappeared by then. Pedaling down the road, I wondered how long the deer had been in its predicament and how much longer it might have remained upside down if I hadn’t come along. Further along I wondered what might have happened if it had gotten hung up deep in the woods, far from itinerant biker intervention. It was a strange couple of minutes I’m not likely to repeat.

25 THINGS YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME: 1. My first name is Stevan. 2. Every MR column is written longhand before getting typed and sent. 3. Before running, I played baseball in 10th grade. 4. Given one choice, I’d pick the dirt and sand roads, two-tracks and trails branching from the Weber Lake State Forest campground, seven miles west of Wolverine, as my favorite running area. 5. I grew up in San Diego. 6. Favorite song growing up was “Kind of a Drag” by The Buckinghams. 7. I own 45 t-shirts with running themes. 8. Last time I ran indoors was on March 4, 1985.

E

ach morning when I wake up and head out the door, it takes a little longer to get the kinks out of my legs and that extra pop back in my step. These days it’s always a little longer to recover from the last hard effort and get my legs back under me afterward. Slowly, against my will and even with all my clawing and scratching efforts to stop it, it turns out I’m getting older. Yes, it’s true, each year another number gets tacked on to my age, even with my best efforts to fight it and deny that this could ever happen to me. There is no fighting it any more; I can feel it in my muscles and bones Desiree Davila at before, during and after every run. Aramco Houston Running is funny that Marathon. way. It seems to be a great paradox for age. I can physically feel old beyond my years as I creak and ache through another morning run. Yet, when I think about putting on my shoes and heading out the door to run around for a while, I can’t help but feel young. There is something about the process and freeness of running that will forever remind me of my youth, and I become nostalgic for my childhood sum Like many kids, for me summertime meant one thing: summer camps. These were naturally running camps, spent in the mountains and woods of California; Mammoth, Sequoias and a little town called Dinky Creek. We were doing something that seemed like the most important thing in the world: getting ready for the fall cross country season, PRs, maybe even that state championship title. We logged more miles than we could imagine, gutted through tempo runs, and hammered out long runs on outrageous courses with names like “The Granite Face” and “The Wall.” Sandwiched between every run or workout was the best childish horseplay you could imagine. The second runs took place daily, but the only thing we really cared about was the places we were running to. Every day at the Dinky Creek running camp the 20-plus high school kids would take off on our second run to the towns’ local waterfalls,

When we conquered runs like “The Granite Face,” everyone would regroup at what seemed like the top of the world and look around in awe to admire the view: trees and trees as far as you could see in any direction. Then someone would wonder out loud, “If a tree fell in the woods and no one was around to hear it, would it still make a sound?”

ver the years the workouts got tougher, the competition stiffer and the races more important. Running continues to be an important part of my life, so much that these days my life is made up of numbers; times, splits and the place I am on this list or that list. Daily runs and workouts have become as important as getting the report to the boss on time. Again, the paradox: how many people are so lucky as to have a business trip where the streets of a major city, say Chicago, are shut down so they can strap on their shoes and run down the streets as

fast as they can? The childish horseplay? Still there, only these days on a rare occasion they are enhanced with an adult beverage or two. When I hammer through the last miles of a solid 20-mile run, I’ll crest the hill on Ridge Road and head directly towards Lake Charlevoix. Coming over the crest I’ll again get that feeling of being on top of the world and take notice of all the beauty surrounding me. It’s a view you have to work for to see, but in that moment all the aches and pains fade and it’s more than a fair reward for the miles logged to get there.

As I think about the transition between childhood and adulthood, I realize it’s something that is forever taking place and may never be fully realized. As much as the daily morning run and all the little aches and pains make me realize my age, the memories running has brought me and the continual journey it brings will forever keep me feeling young.

Bill Benton: 32 Years and Running … chronicles his streak.

M

His lowest daily average was in 2005: 3.25 miles a day, almost 23 miles a week and 99 miles a month. Peak years saw averages of 10 to 12 miles a day, well over 300 miles a month.

By the time you read this, Benton will have logged more than 11,680 consecutive days of running.

“Running in Michigan means going out in any kind of weather,” Benton said. He remembered, “a -21° recorded at Pontiac Jan.19, 1994. For five days, from Jan. 16 to 20, the local lows were subzero. “Snowstorms bring a challenge too,” he said.

ichigan runner Bill Benton has run every day since Jimmy Carter was President. Those were the days of 75cent gasoline, leisure suits, disco, 20-percent interest rates and the Iranian hostage crisis.

“So,” I asked him, “you’re a streaker.”

Weather rarely chases him inside. “There are some indoor runs,” Benton noted, “but then I do (shorter) outdoor runs, too. I wouldn’t feel as happy with (just) a treadmill.”

“No, I always wear clothes when I run,” he said. “There are two streaks to this story,” Benton continued. “While at the University of Detroit, a cross-country team member saw a book I was reading about Joe DiMaggio and his 56-game hitting streak in 1941. He told me he was going to run 56 days in a row” in honor of the Yankee Clipper’s feat.

“This was on March 3, 1970,” said Benton. “It ended Sept. 3, 1975, 2,005 days later. I developed plantar fasciitis in my left heel and had to stop.

“I told him it wasn’t the same and the whole thing was crazy. He agreed but wanted to see how far he could go. A few weeks later, on a lark, I started a streak as well.

He likes to see what it’s like running in extremes. “I might never get a chance to experience that again,” he said. It’s not only the cold and snow he’s challenged and overcome. “I ran in Phoenix once, in 110° in the sun, just to see what it was like. I took water with me and everything was fine. I ran at altitude — 12,000 feet in Colorado — to see what it was like too.”

“I’d run the Boston Marathon that April, thinking I might never get back to run another.” Benton did, eight more in fact.

Weather has rarely chased Bill Benton inside on the thousands of consecutive days he has run.

“I called Boston ’75 my ‘Apollo 13’ because of all that went wrong — a painful heel, diarrhea and a broken shoelace sawed off by my hotel key. I got in with a 2:50:35, but this is one mission that should have been scrubbed,” he said.

There were quirks in there, too. In December 1979, “I ran the Fiesta Bowl Marathon in Arizona with the goal of breaking 2:30. The result was 2:30 flat! What are the odds?” he asked.

Benton was an off-again, on-again runner for 18 months, seeing doctors and testing his foot. When the doctor said he could start up again, he did — and has not stopped since. His current streak started April 23, 1977, and will hit 32 years this spring. Benton continued his high school running at U of D. After graduation he hit the roads, racing fairly well. Of his nine Bostons, he broke 2:30 four times, with a 1981 PR of 2:27:06. From 1979 to ’81, Benton ran seven marathons, all between 2:30:52 and 2:27:06.

20

Michigan Runner - May / June 2009

Benton struggled with injuries off and on after that. “I returned to racing in 1990 and ended in ’93 as more injuries prevented any real (quality) training. I knew my racing days were over.” The streak wasn’t. “I just run for fitness now,” Benton said. He’ll often run through his neighborhood, in nearby parks and on nature trails.

Benton realizes streaking isn’t for everyone, but it is for him. “It’s not something I think about every day,” he said. “It’s in the back of my mind, though. I just don’t feel right if I don’t start (my day) with a run.”

A couple of close calls almost ended the streak. “I’ve had the flu and some abscesses,” Benton said. One abscessed tooth actually felt better when he ran out in frosty air. “Once I had compound stress fractures of both knees, but kept running,” he went on. He was unaware of them at the time; they only showed up later, after they had healed. Had he known about them at the time, Benton said, he might have stopped the streak. Benton has worked at the Total Runner store in Southfield for 25 years. Obsessive? Some might think so, but he still finds his streak enjoyable, not a chore. He’s not a slave to it and leaves time for other challenges.

His mileage varies, but he does “a minimum of a mile or two every day.”

Benton’s tables show 90,150 miles of running through 2008, with 2009 “in progress.” Chances are he and his streak have a way left to run.

The retired Farmington Hills accountant loves numbers too. He compiled a table that

Antarctica: A Special Marathon

Gary Morgan saw whales, seals and lots of penguins, along with magnificent blue icebergs during his visit to Antarctica for the Antarctica Marathon. By Gary Morgan ANTARCTICA (3/10/09) — Running the Antarctica Marathon was an adventure beyond my dreams. Entrants first gathered for an evening reception in Buenos Aires. We got to know each other and hear Marathon Tours President Thom Gilligan tell us what awaited. We were all excited. Let the games begin! We flew from there to Ushuia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world, then boarded the Ioffe, a former Russian spy ship made into an expedition ship. Its crew was Russian, so I didn’t know if they were spying or just wanting to make money from us tourists. The expedition crew was Australian and Canadian. They’re the ones who took us around on Zodiac boats and told us all about Antarctica. The Ioffe set off across the Drake Passage, where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans meet; rough water to navigate. It was 800 miles to King George Island just off the tip of the Antarctica Peninsula. Penguins and seals were there to greet us. There were four scientific bases — Russian, Chinese, Chilian and Uruguayan —

on the island. We would run through each of them and twice up a glacier for our marathon. We got details about the race route the night before it. It would be a 13.1-mile loop that we would do twice. We took the Zodiac boats to the island the next morning. It was 37 degrees, balmy weather by local standards. Then gun fired and off we went on a hilly, muddy, rocky course with a glacier. It was a special feeling being there with the ship in the bay, penguins clapping for us and base staffs cheering us on. The first loop on the course wasn’t bad, but the second one wore me out. It really hurt going up that glacier a second time. The wind picked up as I hit 20 miles and I was bonking. The Chinese gave me a Coke at mile 23 and it helped me finish. When I crossed the line I thought I was going to die, but I recovered 15 minutes later. My time was 4:03, good for 10th overall and third in my age group. It was a thrill to do something like that in such a place. The male and female winners had Michigan connections. Gert Brienne from the Netherlands used to fly cargo planes out of

Willow Run Airport. Michigan State University graduate Lisa Deyoung is originally from Holland. Everyone finished and reboarded the ship. We saw whales, seals and lots of penguins, along with magnificent blue icebergs. We rode on Zodiacs through the ice floats. Humpback whales appeared and seals rested on small icebergs. The mountains were so white from ice and snow that it was blinding when the sun came out. We enjoyed five days of awe-inspiring beauty cruising up and down the peninsula. I will never forget that scenery. Two days after the marathon we had a barbecue on the back of our ship. Runners from the other ship came and joined us. It was a great party with 189 marathoners, 49 half-marathoners, glacier mountains as a backdrop and a whale circling the ship. Not your typical post-race barbecue. On the last day of our cruise, we stopped at an Argentinian base near a huge hill, which we all climbed and sledded down on our back sides. There’s a kid in all of us, no matter what age we are. It was a rougher trip through the Drake Passage coming back. We knew we were getting near port when we passed Cape Horn, the southern tip of South America. When the ship docked, all of us were ready to get on land after 10 days at sea. We went to the airport and headed home. It was a trip I will not forget. MR

DEARBORN (4/04/09) — The cold, gusty wind made Emmanuel Korir shiver in the finish chute, but posed little trouble for him during the Meteor 10K, Event No. 2 in the Michigan Runner Race Series. “It was a good race, but cold,” said Korir, 28, a Kenya native who lives in Lansing. “Very cold!” The event offered purses of $500 for overall men’s and women’s winners, plus $100 premiums for halfway leaders. Additional payouts were $300 for men’s and women’s runners-up, $200 for third, $150 for fourth and $100 for fifth. The firs three masters were awarded $200, $100 and $50 respectively. Korir led from the start, then kept burning up miles to finish in 29:30, second only to the 28:55 Boaz Cheboiywo ran here in 2006. (Both the Meteor 10K and 5K had new courses this year, so all winners set course records.) Nick Stanko, 28, of Haslett was runnerup in 30:25. He said he enjoyed the new 10K course, which started at Ford Field Park, passed through residential areas to Hines Park Drive, then traveled through the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus (mostly on bike paths) before returning to the park. “This is the third time I’ve run this race and each year the course has been different,” Stanko said. “I hope for the sake of the race they can keep this one. It was nice.”

Monica Joyce, 50, of Ann Arbor was the women’s overall and masters champion for the second year in a row. Her 34:51 was 19 seconds slower than last year’s effort, but plenty fast. “It was cold and windy, but I had a good, steady effort,” the 1984 Irish Olympian said. Former University of Michigan steeplechase runner Andrea Parker, 26, of Northville stayed with Joyce until midway through the

Parker had never before raced as far as 10K and said she felt it. “I hit the 5K and decided not to look at my watch any longer. The pain was new to me. I just wanted to get done,” she said. Angela Matthews, 24, of Westland placed third in 36:53. Teens ruled the Meteor 5K. Mitchelblake Sly, 19, of Port Huron led the men in 16:54, while Promise Vos, 14, of Dearborn, paced the women in 19:59. Seconds went to Jayson Doggett, 30, of Fenton (17:43) and Meredith Harris, 20, of Holland (20:13). Claiming thirds were Mo Love, 28 (18:25) and Christine Vincent, 45, of Jackson, also women’s masters champ (20:50). David Adkins, 41, was the men’s masters winner (19:00). “He had a really strong race,” said Power of James. “Especially the second half. He can be proud of himself.” Power, 45, the top masters finisher, took second overall in 2:47:00. P.F. Potvin, 33, of Ann Arbor came in third (2:50:17). Didion ran by herself during much of the marathon. “The second half was really hard because I went out too fast,” she said. “And it seemed like we had a headwind for all 26.2 miles.” A crowd greeted her at finish line, however. “I have quite an entourage today: all four kids plus a husband,” Didion explained. Margaret Moore, 26, of Chicago, took second in 3:08:36. Claudette Augert, 45, of Edmonton, Alberta, was third overall and the top masters woman in 3:10:11. James said he learned about the marathon from its Web site, www.martianmarathon.com. “It’s a first-class site,” he said. “It gave me everything I needed to know about the race and information about Mars too.” Suet-fei Li, 33, a Hong Kong native living in Chicago, discovered the Martian Half Marathon online. “I was searching for a certified race and found this one on the Internet,” she said. “My goal was to run a fast half marathon.” Li ran her fastest half by more than four minutes, finishing first woman overall in 1:20:12. Next came Leah Scharl, 32, of Clarkston (1:24:41) and Mindy Houser, 30, of Franklin (1:26:39). Michelle Sica, 40, of Brighton led the masters in 1:31:47. Former Eastern Michigan University standout Corey Nowitzke, 24, demolished the men’s field in his debut half marathon. His 1:06:58 placed him far ahead of runnerup Leo Foley, 27, of Howell (1:15:00) and Jason Mahakian, 20, of Farmington Hills (1:15:36). Town Crier, Saugatuck

Town Crier Sunshine Brings Laughter, Joy

Two times two equaled two Town Crier bells for Matt Smith, 35, of Holland, second in both the 10K (34:14) and 5K (16:53). Smith, a Zeeland elementary teacher, is well-known in Saugatuck as eight-time winner of the Mt. Baldhead 15K Challenge held each fall.

Former Grand Valley State runner Krista O’Dell, 27, of Caledonia, dominated the women’s races, sweeping the 10K in 40:58 and 5K in 19:35. Jill Evers, 42, of Kent City, doubled as women’s masters (over age 40) champ in the 10K (42:35) and 5K (20:38), placing second and third overall, respectively. Saugatuck Spanish teacher and girls running coach Angelina Bauer was second overall in the 5K with a 20:07 time. Hank Risley, 41, of Cedar Springs, 2008 Michigan Runner magazine Runner of the Year, was masters king in the 10K (35:12) and runner-up to Rico Despeendstra, 43, of Grand Haven (16:55) in the 5K (17:41). There were age-group elites such as Santos, and all-out aces like Jerry Johncock. Johncock, who last year set U.S. 80-andover records at 30K, 50K and the marathon, showed at 81 he’s still going strong, competing against “the young guys” and still sweeping 65-and-over titles in the 10K (55:07) and 5K (29:41). A noncompetitive kids dash featured throngs of children — sent off, as were grown ups, by Town Crier Art Talsma clang-

José Santos ran the race he founded for the first time. ing his handbell — romping around a block to receive ribbons at the finish. “Future marathoners of America, are you ready for a good time?” asked the 6’6” Talsma, towering, in full regalia, above the youngsters. There was little doubt wee ones were. The race in past years has raised more than $7,000 for Saugatuck Public Schools, TriCommunity Recreation and Saugatuck Youth Center programs. Santos, still catching his breath, was tallying 2009 totals at press time.

SAUGATUCK (4/11/09) — José Santos looked like the town laugher after his Town Crier road races drowned in an element alien to them: sunshine. “No rain — and I got to run at last!” Santos said. “José has complained for six years that he can’t run the race he founded,” said spouse Sherrie Santos. “This year I said, ‘Volunteers can manage this. Run or else!’” Nothing like the threat of domestic discord to set a man’s feet awing. Santos, a Dominican Republic native who owns a Caribbean Colors and Nostalgia store, won his men’s 55-60 age group in a personalrecord 41 minutes, 19 seconds. “It was colder than the Caribbean,” he conceded of the morning’s high-30s temperatures. “But it was perfect for running: sunny, the way I like!” April showers that would make Norman Bates jealous dampened turnouts at recent Town Criers. Not this year. Santos’ exuberance at finally running helped part the rain clouds -- sort of like Moses and the Red Sea, turned topsy-turvy — and numbers soared. In a tourist town brimming with bed and breakfasts, it was fitting that B&B — Saugatuck High School track coach Rick Bauer and his star runner, Christian Birky — were men’s race winners. Bauer, 29, of Holland, claimed the 10K in 33:34. Birky, 18, an all-stater bound for Princeton next fall, was 5K king in 15:52. Bauer won $100 and Birky $75 worth of

Saugatuck-Douglas Area Business Association bucks, good in member stores. There were 160 finishers in the 10K and 232 in the 5K, several of whom doubled (i.e. ran both).

Michiganians Represent U.S. in Jewish Olympic Games By Tracey Cohen

S

everal Michiganians will join more than 7,000 select athletes representing 60-plus nations during the 18th Maccabiah Games in Israel July 12-23. The Games, also known as the Jewish Olympics, are the third-largest sporting event in the world. Maccabiah symbolizes the communal values, caring and sharing of the Jewish people and their communities. The principle mission of the Games, held every four years, is to generate a gathering of Jewish athletes to compete in high-level sports competitions while strengthening their bonds to the state of Israel and its people. Participants are provided with “an awareness of their heritage — who they are, where they came from and where they are going,” USA Maccabiah team general chairman Ron Carner said. Team USA is sponsored by Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel, which represents the U.S. as a territorial organization of the international Maccabi World Union. It will consist of nearly 1,000 athletes from 41 states, competing in 26 events. Seven top athletes will represent Michigan in the half marathon, triathlon and track and field events. Nicole Meisner, finishing her junior year at Berkley High School, will participate in the juniors track and field competition. Her father, Mort Meisner, says Nicole will likely race in the 200-, 400-, 4x100- and 4x400meter dashes.

She shares her school’s 4x100 record and held its 200 standard before it was broken recently. Meisner said his daughter loves competition and finds its intensity “relaxing.” It’s also an opportunity to establish and maintain friendships across the globe. Nicole is an active member of Temple Shir Shalom, the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization, and regards her heritage as is an important aspect of her life.

U

niversity of Michigan sophomore Jason Mahakian, 20, said he is thrilled to have the opportunity to combine two large parts of his life: religion and running. He applied to run the half marathon because he finds it “the perfect distance to use my speed and endurance to reach goals and continue to improve.” Mahakian, who ran four years of track and cross country at Walled Lake Western High School, now competes for the U-M Running Club team in a variety of races. He relishes sharing his interests with like-minded people, and has worked for Running Fit stores for the past four years. Mahakian, who explored Israel last year on the Taglit Birthright with U-M Hillel, said of this summer’s Games, “I am excited to learn even more about the land of my people and its heritage. This will be a great opportunity to meet Jewish people from all around the world.” Jason’s older brother, Chad Mahakian, 23, also started running while in high

va Solomon, 41, is a second-grade Hebrew schoolteacher, mother of three, recent co-founder/director of EST Events and Team USA member in the triathlon and half marathon. She enjoys racing any distance from a 5K to a marathon. Solomon is very involved in the Ann Arbor Jewish community. This will be her third trip to Israel. Cardiologist Herb Aronow, 41, will compete as a masters athlete in the triathlon. The U-M graduate lives in Ann Arbor with his wife and two children. “It will be my honor and privilege to represent the United States while competing alongside other Jewish athletes from around the world,” Aronow said. Carolyn Gersh, a U-M Ph.D. student, will compete in the half marathon. She said long-distance running is her strength and she’s always wanted to visit Israel. She couldn’t pass up the Games. U-M junior and track team member Jeffrey Merrill will be making his second trip to the Games, in which he competed as a junior athlete in 2005. He looks forward to sharing the experience with his family in Jerusalem, whom he rarely sees. Although athletes are subsidized by Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel, they must participate in a Yachad, or “shared commitment” program, in upholding the spirit of the Maccabiah. Fundraising is encouraged to ensure that all qualified athletes have the opportunity to participate in the Games. Athletes sell raffle tickets, host bake sales, create personal Web sites and use other creative means to raise funds to meet their goals. Running Off Key: The iPod Assault

T

he iPod may be ruining the community of running. I do not mean the “running community.” I’m talking about the communion we runners enjoy with one another. Why is it destroying this communion? There are two universal criticisms of iPods and one not-so-obvious observation. One criticism is they’re not safe. Have you ever tried to say “excuse me” to a racer whose ears are too busy digesting the Black Eyed Peas, or watched a music-absorbed runner almost get buried by a lumbering Buick distractedly floating through an intersection? Not so safe. The second criticism is they’re for wimps. OK, this is a bit harsh. But it’s a genuine (albeit, sometimes unspoken) opinion held by some (non-wimp) runners.

moments, I sought comfort by striking up a conversation. Often a brief exchange with another runner provides a mental boost and leads to a life-long running friend — if not a recommendation for a good podiatrist or great sushi restaurant. As I pressed on, up a slight hill, I found my connection: the red shorts, white tank-top ahead of me. As I approached, I began to rehearse the line I would offer as I closed up beside him. Probably something about the sunny morning and ideal temperature, or maybe a sarcastic comment about my pace — some would call it sand bagging. It was about two strides from him that I noticed it. The it? The swaying white cord snaking from his ears to a small white rectangle wrapped snuggly to his arm: An iPod. A “don’t bother me” tattoo could not have sent a clearer message. So I pressed on. The black shorts and red top 20 yards ahead were next. I needed a few

friendly, I’m-looking-for-conversation, tone. “Thanks,” she said, tugging the cord on my side. The ear bud popped from her ear and dangled off her shoulder. We talked for about half mile. She led the conversation, telling me about the new music genre she was enjoying that was accompanied by some great lyrics. I don’t remember them now, but she recited them a few times, the final time as we slowly parted. She clearly found those lyrics and beat exhilarating. I gave the obligatory hand wave as our distance apart grew. She returned the gesture, then tucked the bud back in her ear and vanished from the race. I was glad I talked to her. As I reflect on that race, I’m certain that any one of the other runners plugged into some vibe would have welcomed a quick respite from their solitude. However, I didn’t

. . .I’m certain that any one of the other runners plugged into some vibe would have welcomed a quick respite from their solitude. Running with music means you need distraction, which means you cannot tolerate the physical and mental pain that running creates. Fair? Maybe not. Silly, especially in today’s world where everyone’s a runner? Maybe. But “no pain no gain” has long been the running mantra. But the other observation — that the iPod is ruining the community of running — is more significant: the iPod is creating solitude in an activity that, while an individual pursuit, is only fully experienced when shared among the community of runners. How so? It is best described with a real-life example; one that illustrates the loss iPods create, but also hits to the hope they invite. During a recent 30K race I found the need to pass the time with my fellow racers; forget the fact that I just ran eight miles and still had 10 to go. So, as most runners do in these mid-race 30

more minutes to come up with a witty line anyway, I thought. A moment or two later, as I gained on the next runner, I noticed she too displayed the ostensible do-not-disturb sign: white cord again leading to some mind-droning rhythm that I best not disturb. I strode by. The next opportunity was the black shorts and yellow short-sleeve. Two minutes later, same result. Apple had struck again. On to the next runner: A women whose one memorable clothing article was a bright orange hat. It was a strikingly-cool hat and I wanted her to know that. A minute later I rethought my plan when I spotted the dancing white cord bounce off her arm. Four in a row. Pathetic, I thought to myself. I was ready to ignore her just as she was ignoring the rest of the world, when I decided that her hat was too cool not to say anything, so I said it. “Awesome hat,” I said in the runner-

know that. Instead, stubbornly, I thought they were wimps or worse … didn’t want to be part of the community of running. Hard to know for sure, but it’s probably neither. In truth running, no matter what your reasons or motivation requirements, is still running and sometimes tough — even for us non-wimps. So, here’s a suggestion. If you’re one of the iPoders, leave the unit home for one race. I understand using music as motivation (or distraction) for your long, lonely runs. But races are not nearly as lonely and we noniPoders would love to hear from you again. And if you’re one of the non-iPoders, don’t let a little cord get in the way of a potential friendship …or podiatrist recommendation, sushi locale or even a new groove. Reach out and connect — don’t let our different needs interfere with our common desire to run. After all, we need each other. It’s a long way to the finish line alone. MR

Echoes at Sunrise: How a Midnight Marathon Cast My Father in a New Light

By Malcolm D. Gibson

I

didn’t cry when my father died. A kind man but a mean drunk, I judged him only by his limitations. That is, until my limitations as a distance runner cast him in a new light. It happened at 5 a.m. on a two-lane blacktop during the Texas Independence Relay. Eight runners ... 200 miles ... 33 hours straight, retracing the 1836 route of the Mexican army between victory at the Alamo and defeat at the Battle of San Jacinto. From Gonzales, population 350, to Houston, population 3.5 million, the race is a running tour of rural Texas, through farming towns like those where my dad grew up. After three daylight 10Ks with no sleep, I navigated my fourth rotation by the light of a headlamp. Farm houses with sleeping families floated by like ghosts in the pre-dawn chill. As boundaries of time and space merged in the darkness, I felt closer to my father’s world than ever before. I imagined him as a boy on one of those farms, before life took its toll. He had simple values forged by the Great Depression and World War II ... work hard, play fair, look for the best in people. They endeared him to everyone but protected him from no one. A trusting soul, he was no match for the brave new world of the ‘60’s. Dad was a college football player and better athlete than me. If running had been in vogue, he’d at least have had a choice of addictions. But athletics were for kids. Real men didn’t run, they drank. So he did. By age 35 running had supplanted booze as my drug of choice ... just in time to save me from my father’s fate. I wasn’t a better person, I just had better options. As my father’s generation morphed from the New Deal to the New Age, money became the benchmark for success. He lost this contest and, along the way, his self esteem. We boomers tried to dodge that bullet by advocating insight over income. We thought we had the answers ... that who we were would be revealed by the questions we asked ourselves. We were only half right. It took more than musing to learn the truth; it took painful

introspection. For me, the questions could only be asked by pushing beyond my physical limits ... looking into the abyss. I thought the answers would materialize when I achieved my goals. Personal records were the Holy Grail so I ignored my failures and soldered on in quest of ever more medals ... and enlightenment. Blinded by my own ambition, I judged others by their missteps. Someone else’s defeat made me feel superior by comparison. No one paid a higher price than my father. When he lost his battle against alcoholism, I hated him as a man. But on that cold Texas night, the pace I promised my team in shambles along with my pride, I finally felt my father’s pain. As I hobbled through the darkness I saw us standing together in a gas station 40 years ago, his head bowed, too drunk to drive, waiting for me to take him home ... crying.

had drawn close enough to speak, and through our shared fatigue I heard him chuckle and say in a west-Texas twang, “Well, thank you sun.” But when I looked around, there was no one there. I didn’t report this mystery to my friends. Nor did I check for my comrade’s name on the finishers list. Because, you see, as I stood alone looking down the highway, the true meaning of his words came to me: “Thank you son.” Malcom Mack Gibson is a lawyer who lives, runs and writes in Houston. He can be reached at mgibson@mdgibson.com. Copyright 2009/All Rights Reserved

I didn’t encourage him, only judged him. When he needed love the most, I answered with disdain. We never spoke about that night, and within a month he was dead. Now it was my turn, an old runner whose journey had taken me to a place where the trails followed by others died away ... left to find my own way home. For the first time in 40 years I needed my father. When I saw the lights of the transition area in the distance, I felt a sense of sadness. Although physically exhausted, my mind was clear and focused. I knew my teammates were straining to see my headlamp bobbing in the distance, a tiny point of light like a ship on the horizon. Although the glare from the gasoline-powered generators bathed the hand-off area, it would be impossible for them to distinguish me from any other runners until we had approached to within 20 yards. It was then that I heard the footsteps of another runner behind me. He maintained my pace, never drawing too close. Struggling with me through the final mile, his presence helped push me along ... an exchange of special energy ... a bond only athletes know. As we neared the finish a burnt-orange sunrise crested the final hill. My companion Michigan Runner - May / June 2009

Notes on the Run By Daniel G. Kelsey

Hero

“Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Self-Reliance”

O

ne evening last fall, with leaves starting to drop and the temperature perfect for running, with Halloween lurking at week’s end, I passed a house at my village’s edge. My training routes from home take me past the place on most of my tours. The house draws my notice more than others along the way because my grandparents lived in it until their deaths a month apart more than four decades ago when I was 12. Not that it’s spooky. It’s full of memory. The family living there now has a son who played baseball on a Little League team I coached more than a decade ago. Forty years or 10 are too wide a gap to place a voice as harsh as gravel that rang out with one word on this particular evening. If it came from my grandfather’s ghost, it said, “Hero.” If it came from the Little Leaguer, it said, “Zero.” Either way, its tone carried a note, to my ear, of irony, satire or downright resentment, a comment on the foolishness or offensiveness of a runner. My observation is that a few people look in on our world from outside, from porches or lawns or vehicles, with frowns and disgusted gestures, as if we’re getting in their way, stepping out of bounds or flaunting our health in their faces. Maybe it’s lifestyle envy. Maybe it’s a feeling of superiority over anyone who wastes his time on exercise. On this particular evening, under the stoplight at the start of the run, my route had taken me past two girls, about 13 or 14, both a bit chunky, who closed ranks as they walked toward me, watching me with faces about to break out in hilarity. I swear I could put words to their giggles as I strode away. Look at that silly old guy. You don’t have to be a runner, or even a silly old guy, to recognize the sour grapes behind a word, scowl or giggle meant to put an upstart in his place. Anybody who appreciates language learns quickly that he’d better have a 34

sense of who he’s writing for or talking to before he trots out words with more than two syllables from a dictionary in his head. If he writes for a newspaper, he’s bound to get a letter from an English teacher when he forgets a rule, or he’s liable to get lashes from the tongues of colleagues who believe their grasp of language exceeds his, when he crosses a line. If he talks to friends, he’s in danger of ruffling feathers, assuming he hasn’t first tested their tolerance for the sesquipedalian — er, for big words — when he gets precise or literal. Mark Twain favored choosing the right word, not its first cousin, by which he may have meant choosing the word most familiar to everyone within earshot. Dumb it down. Newspapers, whether following his advice or not, haven’t once challenged a reader to expand his vocabulary in at least a century. Twain, we might assume, would have advised running, but only at a trot, pleasing everybody who happens to be looking on. A former co-worker of mine had instructive ideas on both language and running. Set in his ways, settled in his diction, confirmed in his convictions, he spiced his news with editorializing and his opinions with sermonizing, but in the homiest of terms. Dumpy, long in the tooth, creaky in the joints, spent after a day at the office, he expounded a view that the only reason for running was to make up for lack of a sex life. My word, see Dick run. Run Jane run. No wonder the Little Leaguer shouted “Zero” from the house, understanding why I was hoofing. No wonder the ghost of my grandfather shouted “Hero” from the great beyond, understanding the irony in a word. No wonder the girls giggled under the stoplight, understanding the excesses of a silly old guy. Let them, the jealous world and Twain have their say. My pursuit of fitness and language, with a nod to Emerson, springs from within. Now it’s bolstered as well by an image, emblematic of self-reliance, presented to me while driving out of Plainwell a few days after Halloween. A woman, cute and fashionable, held a phone to her ear as she ran along a street, talking and exercising. MR

Strides is Much More than ‘Just’ a Run By Gale Fisher Battle Creek runner/writer Gale Fisher is a regular participant in Strides for Life, a four-day, 100mile run through west Michigan that raises funds for the American Cancer Society. This year’s event will be June 18-21.

unning is one of those activities that returns the energy it requires, plus a boost beyond. For all the miles I’ve logged past exhaustion, I have reaped benefits that more than replenished my body, mind and soul. Our running community is a diverse group whose positive energy shines back and lifts us all. I completed my ninth Strides for Life last year. Thirty of us raised a record of more than $40,000 for the American Cancer Society in the 30th running of the event. Many Strides entrants run each year; it’s a four-day reunion we hold each June. We have had runners range from age 9 into their 70s. Our support crew is crucial — and many are veterans too. Each of us has our own reasons for being there. Cancer has no boundaries and many have felt its impact. It hit us especially hard when one of our own, Marcelo Van Drie, was diagnosed with cancer in spring 2008. Although Marcelo had not been with us the prior two years, he remained a huge part of our Strides family. His energy, enthusiasm and smile kept us all running mile after mile. Marcelo’s initial outlook was not good, but things progressed and his chemo began to work. He was there to cheer us on in the last two days, and although he had lost much weight, his smile was radiant. He is facing a bigger fight now than running 100 miles. We all hope he wins and is running with us again next year. Although we’re a tight-knit group, our goal is to make Strides bigger. If you are curious, check us out at www.stridesforlife.com. Words cannot begin to describe it. You must experience this event. MR

Sidelined with Hip Bursitis By Michael Heberling

B

ecoming a serious runner at the grand master stage of my life required a thorough understanding of my limitations. Being “50 something” meant that I was much more prone to injury than my younger running colleagues. To complicate things further, when and if I became injured it would take longer for me to heal. As a result, my training regimen included only three running days per week, each followed by a cross-training or a rest day. I would never run two days in a row.

This training program proved successful. I new 5K PRs every year from 2003 through 2007. My pace went from 7:54 per mile to 6:56. In fact, 2007 was a banner year. I ran in 14 races and placed in my age group in all but two of them. There were two espe-

cially memorable events that year: placing third in my age group in the Crim 5K and winning the Detroit Marathon Relay as part of the Baker College team. My new goal was to have 2008 be even better. Unfortunately, I immediately violated my successful five-year training plan. I cranked up the mileage and speed too quickly and ran on consecutive days. I ended up getting a horrible pain in my left hip in February. Matters steadily got worse. I could not sit down or rise from a chair without a jolt in my hip. I think I know now what “tasered” feels like. It hurt getting in and out of a car, even putting on and taking off pants. I no longer cared about running; I just wanted to be able to walk again pain-free. I was certain my ball joint was shot and a hip-replacement operation was in my future. My physician, Kavitha Baddam, had

me do motion tests to help in her diagnosis. She determined that I had trochanteric (or hip) bursitis. Repetitive motions such as running, riding a bicycle or climbing stairs can cause irritation or inflammation of the trochanteric bursa, which serves as a cushion between the hip bone and muscles/tendons. There were two parts to Dr. Baddam’s treatment. The first involved reducing the inflammation. She injected a cortisonebased shot into my hip, which provided relief almost immediately. She then gave me a prescription for anti-inflammatory pills. The second part of the treatment involved rest (not running for a month) and stretching. Since I could barely walk at this point, “not running” was easy. I was also given hip-stretching exercises to do twice daily. These helped loosen thigh muscles, which, in turn, reduced the stress on my hips. After a month I was fully recovered. It felt wonderful. Sadly, most of us don’t fully appreciate being healthy until: 1) We’re not healthy, or 2) We have just recovered after being injured. I have drastically changed my training regimen since then. I have gone back to running just three times a week on alternate days, with cross training in between. Serious stretching has been added as a key part of my routine. Baker fitness director Maureen Parmann even convinced me to start taking yoga classes. Hey, I’ll do whatever it takes to stay pain free! I was finally able to run again (albeit slowly and for just short distances). I then gradually increased my speed and distance. I was surprised that I actually bounced back fairly quickly. My first 5K race afterward came at Alma’s Highland Festival on Memorial Day weekend. I placed second out of 18 in my age group with a time of 21:54 (7:04 pace). Given that I did not think I would ever run again, this finish was very close to being a miracle.

day and that kick-butt long grueling uphill to the finish line. Just a classic. Send an e-mail to runlikehal@yahoo.com or register online at www.dexterannarborrun.com.

s I write this, it’s been spring for a week, the sun is out, it’s closing in on 60° and me and the dog are coming off her 5K PR, 24:10 at the Bill Roney Memorial Run the Hanson brothers so superbly put on in Utica.

June 6, Mackinac Island – Is there a tougher first mile in state racing than this one, in the Lilac Festival 10K? But you make up for it with a long, wonderful descent down the spine of the island. A wonderful small-race alternative to the big and crowded run around the island in the fall. The crowds have yet to arrive, you can get a deal on a room, there aren’t any lines to eat, and if you get lucky the lilacs, blooming here on huge trees, will be in bloom. Call John Gault at (810) 659-6493 or register at gracemgt@aol.com.

She’s fired up, I’m fired up and I’m thinking summer. I’ve run more than 1,100 races in all parts of the state, from Dowagiac to Wyandotte, from Hillsdale to Mackinaw City, from Port Huron to Cadillac, from Mackinac Island to Wakefield and here’s a can’t-miss list of highlight races if you’re looking for guidance about where to go lace ’em up this summer.

June 13, Pinconning – Marty Schultz had been putting on the Cheesetown Challenge since I was young, and that’s a long time. Just a perfect small-town event put on perfectly year in and year out. A flat and fast 5-miler, this is a PR course, and Schultz always puts on a great finish line feed. A 2-miler for spouses not up for five, and a kids’ quartermile trot to boot. Call Marty at (989) 8795617 or go to www.cheesetownraces.org. June 27, Muskegon – There’s reason to celebrate the Muskegon Chronicle runs, both for the fact that they are going on into their 28th year, and for the fact there’s a newspaper still healthy enough to sponsor something. There’s a 5K, but the 15K is the one to put in the

May 31, Ann Arbor – There’s a 5K and a 10K if you’re not up to the marquee event, the glorious half-marathon along the Huron River from Dexter to downtown Ann Arbor. I had one of those perfect races that so rarely come along once long ago, nearly hitting my 10K PR in about 37:10 en route to my 10mile PR of just under 61 minutes and almost hitting my half-marathon PR despite a hot

May 25, Memorial Day, Grosse Ile – There’s a 5K on offer but it’s the 8K that offers all the cool views of the Detroit River. And, yes, for those of you who have never seen the river and get snarky about what a cesspool it must be, it is beautiful. Blue and clear and a pleasure to look at. Call Total Runner at (734) 282-1101 or go to www.active.com to register online.

Then, that night, is the even tougher 5.8K hill climb from the beach at Eagle Harbor to the top of Mt. Baldy, with a net vertical ascent of more than 800 feet. And Sunday is the toughest 25K, by far, in the state, with a first five miles of intense technical climbing and a finishing three miles of a lung- and thigh-busting climb on switchbacks up the same ridge traverse as Saturday morning. Call Jeff Crumbaugh at (715) 460-0426 or go to http://run.greatlakesendurance.com to learn more about these races or the others in crazy Jeff’s summer series.

July 25, Dowagiac – Steve’s Run is another of those wonderful community events, put on by the legendary Ron Gunn, a true pioneer in racing, marathoning and road running. The race starts and finishes downtown, with a zany tour across a golf course, with players pausing in mid-stroke to watch you go by, and on trails through woods with European twists like bales of hay to tra-

July 11, 12, Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor – HEY, BIG CAPS TO CALL YOUR ATTENTION TO THE FREAKING COOLEST SET OF RACES IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE. Got your attention? Then plan on the long drive to the tip of the Keweenaw. You can do all three races and be scored for the series, or any of them. All are ridiculous tough and ridiculously beautiful. The Saturday morning 10K starts in Copper Harbor at the end of Lake Fanny Hooe, and ends after a tour through flowering meadows and along ponds and creeks up, up and UP a mountainside through near-dark deep forest to the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge.

Mackinac Island Eight Mile, 2005 with announcer Scott Hubbard verse. It’s usually hot and humid and that creek makes for a wonderful place to end up after. And the town’s annual summer fest offers a weekend of family fun. Call Gunn at (269) 782-1209.

Sept. 19, Leelanau Peninsula – The Harvest Stompede is sooo cool. What could be finer than a hilly 7-mile run through three vineyards laden with grapes just ahead of picking, including one grueling, sandy, can’t-get-yourfooting climb that goes on for a mile? Nothing, unless it’s followed by a wine tasting and food sampling at each of the 14 or so participating vineyards over that day and the next. A tip? Get a buzz on Saturday, go

to the beach in Sutton’s Harbor and take a nap, then go for a kayak in the deep-water bay. Then finish the tour copping another buzz Sunday. Go to www.lpwines.com/harvest/. I’ve left off a lot of good races. I only included ones I’ve done. All are guaranteed great. They’re scattered around the state and include fast and flat, small and large. Keep an eye out for the old guy with the black lab. He’ll be at a bunch of them. MR

Sept. 12, Mackinac Island – A great time, again, to be on the island, with the crowds of summer long gone. It’s a flat, fast 8-mile tour of the island, but that usually means a strong headwind at one point. Don’t go for the day. Make a weekend of it and have a quiet, peaceful island almost to yourself on Sunday.

Call John Gault at (810) 659-6493 or register at gracemgt@aol.com.
