love basketball. Too bad it does not love me. I rolled my left ankle playing recently. That’s my good ankle.

“Why keep playing if you’re just going to hurt yourself?” my wife asked. Why keep living if you’re just going to die? I said. “Why do you always answer me with a question?” The crutches were still on the porch from last time. I used them to go get x-rays. While waiting I got an email on my laptop: “Nothing’s hotter than a guy who can dunk,” it said. I heard this while leaving my gym,” wrote Daniel Hawkin, whom I’d never met but seemed to know all about me. “Two girls were watching a 3on-3 basketball game which abruptly ended when the biggest guy jumped, knocked the defender flat on his a** and dunked on him while he was laying sprawled on the blacktop.” What kind of gym has a blacktop floor? I wondered. But I kept reading. “That’s when the blonde cheekily whispered this confession to her smoking-hot Asian friend in pink sweatpants: ‘Nothing’s hotter than a guy who can dunk.’ ‘Uh huhhh!’ the Asian hottie whim-

pered.” I could dunk through my 30s, back when I had to be fit to avoid the dinosaurs. All that’s left are memories. In college friends and I would play hoops at a nearby playground, where Mimi M. watched, adding to my incentive to jam (and frequency the chain nets ripped my fingers). I dunked during one game when the guy covering me was a junkie. He didn’t sprawl on his a** on the asphalt, just freaked out and could not continue. My dunking ended when I took up running. Nothing like pounding 50 miles a week horizontally to trash leg muscles used to spring vertically. Turning 40, 50 and 60 were also factors. Daniel’s letter reminded me of all I have given up. OK, not really. Mimi and I stayed platonic friends, to my chagrin. Cheeky blondes and smoking-hot Asians whimpering “Uh huhhh!” were hard to come by. I married a woman who shared my later-in-life love for running. She’s still going even though I’m not, thanks to what pounding too many miles overdid to my right ankle. Basketball, played at a lower altitude, once more beckons. My hopes to re-find my hops — and take one last crack at those hotties — seemed kaput till I read Daniel’s email further. “Breakthrough research,” he wrote, “has surfaced about the exact ‘levers’ which allow people to jump ridiculously high. Now the world’s highest (vertically, I assumed) dunker is selling a bada** program that can transform regular guys who can’t even touch the rim into dudes who can dunk with two hands every time with ease.” Fountain of youth, here I come! Mimi may be a grandma now, but look out Asians sizzling in pink sweatpants! With both ankles crippled, I am finally balanced and signing up for this bada** program. In no time I’ll be jumping higher and so hot no one will touch me. (Wait ... was that my problem in college too?) “What you need,” said my wife when I told her my latest strategy, “is to stop treating symptoms and deal with causes.” Like what? “How you sprained your brain,” she said. - MR -

Beyond the Chip

Are These Buds for You? By Ron Marinucci

I’m a Luddite when it comes to technology. So I asked my son, Matt, about these music-loving runners. He said most use an iPod or some other such device. Many of these can hold 300 or more songs that can be cycled through like CDs on their players. That can total 15 to 20 hours of music. Should be enough to handle most long runs. Some studies have shown listening to music can make running seem easier. Perceptions of difficulty can be diminished by as much as 10 percent, especially on slower runs. Music can also elevate one’s mood, reducing fatigue and tension. Listening can motivate some runners, especially those who find running “boring.” Still more research is being conducted — some, for example, with the synchronization of pace or stride rate with music’s beat. I’ve often wondered about the dangers of running this way. On the roads, wearing earbuds can be hazardous. One of our senses is removed from our natural safety mechanisms. Runners who listen to music should be extra vigilant with their other senses. Safety aside, I was curious about what music/songs Michigan runners prefer. I’ve never felt any desire to use earbuds or headsets, but during races I’ve enjoyed some of the music on the courses. Hearing “Nowhere to Run” blasting from a boombox during the last mile of the Crim always perked me up, a least a little. But on daily runs, nope, I’ve never listened. So I asked about a dozen state runners. My informal poll surprised me. The overwhelming majority of respondents claimed they preferred to run without music. That doesn’t quite match up with the national magazines’ stories or number of earbuds I see in races and otherwise. At first I thought my results might be a generational thing. Younger runners, more comfortable with technology, are more apt to run with music … maybe. Older runners, perhaps out of years-old habits or due to the need to just get away from the stresses of daily life, would rather be alone with their thoughts … maybe.

taking away that sense. “I guess I can understand if you are warming up or need to be in yourself for the moment,” he continued. “Or maybe for distraction on the dreadmill. I do have good memories of the team blasting ‘Born to Run’ before and after cross country meets in college. I roll that into good memories of teammates and competition.

T

hey seem ubiquitous — headphones or earbuds. For quite a while runners have been listening to music while they run. First it was with those rather-cumbersome headsets. With the advance of technology, those have been replaced by the ever-so-small earbuds.

“Otherwise, mark me down in the column of rarely listening to music while running,” Muchow said.

Anthony Targan now ditches the earbuds for shorter races. ner article eight years ago was on this subject. Targan’s personal favorites include “Running Down a Dream” by Tom Petty and “Help! I’m Alive” by Metric. “I generally run to music when I’m training alone, but never with others,” he told me. ”I always used to race with music, but now only use it for marathons when I need the distraction.” He now ditches the earbuds for shorter races. “I really want to be focused on listening to my body,” Targan said. My son Matt, who runs with earbuds, likes “Mother” by Danzig and wrestling theme songs. (Yes, it embarrasses a father to hear that.) He recently started listening to podcasts, a variety of radio shows recorded and put online available for download. MR’s 2015 Michigan Women’s Runner of the Year Sarah Boyle told me, “I’m in the same boat as you. I don’t ever run with music. ”I am never bored without it,” she continued. “People are my best company when I can have them along for a run.” National senior running ace Doug Goodhue echoed those comments. But he did recall, “When I first started racing, the songs ‘Takin’ It to the Streets’ by the Doobie Brothers and ‘Start Me Up’ by the Rolling Stones inspired me.”

Regardless, here are responses I received to these questions: Do you run with music? If so, what are your favorite one or two songs?

“I have never run with music,” said Andy Muchow, another former ROTY, “Somehow it takes away from my run.”

Of the folks I surveyed, Anthony Targan was by far the most enthusiastic booster of running with music. “Running songs is a topic near and dear to my heart,” he said. In fact, his first Michigan Run-

He cited the dangers of “blanking out on the world around you,” but mostly it’s more personal. “I like to hear the sound of my footsteps and the world around me,” Muchow said. “Sometimes, like at a park, it’s better than others, but I couldn’t imagine

Longtime runner, swimmer and kayaker Patty Pape now spends much of her exercise time walking at least three miles a day. “I walk with the girls between 6 and 7 a.m. on weekdays,” she said. “We listen to the owls, hawks, mourning doves and coyotes — when we aren’t talking and gossiping, updating one another on our lives. That’s more fun that music.” Mark Cryderman doesn’t use earbuds either. “When I’m running,” he said, “it’s a great time to think and plan. It’s kind of my church. Running the trails of Milford and Kensington lets me take in the beauty of nature: the woods, rivers, lakes and occasional deer or wild turkey giving me an inquisitive look as I pass. I can also see the individuals, couples and families enjoying these things, too, each in their own way. “There’s too much going on to be distracted by music,” he declared. “I don’t run with music at all at this time,” said 2015 MR Senior Runner of the Year Eric Stuber. “But Brooke, my wife, listens to ‘80s rock on Pandora when she runs alone. “I used to listen to ‘Classic Rock Block Party Weekends’ when I was marathon training more than 20 years ago,” he continued. “But now I just run by myself with only the world singing its tune.” Lauren Hubbell doesn’t use earbuds, but runs with music anyway. “I often find myself singing in my head,” she said. “I had a friend who got a song stuck in his head during an 18-mile training run. That song? ‘The Witch Doctor.’ You know, the one that goes, ‘Ooheee-ooh-ah-ah, ting tang, walla-walla bing-bang’? Is there a more annoying song to have stuck in your head? I think not!” Dave Minier threw a wrinkle into his reply. “I sometimes sing off-key while running, just to make my fellow runners sick,” he said. “I don’t wear the earmuffs or other devices for fear I might not hear a 16-wheeler closing in on me.” So my conclusion? I’ll just have to do more research. - MR -

Is ‘Too Much Running’ Not Enough? By Dave Foley

lmost all research on the subject has concluded some running is good for us. The fact you are reading this in a running magazine means I likely don’t have to sell you on running’s virtues. We all know it’s been linked to benefits such as lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, controlling weight and reducing stress.

The question is “How much running is too much?”

The researchers did note that study participants self-reported their running habits, which may lead to error or bias. They also wrote the 127 participants identified as strenuous joggers may have been too small a group to accurately calculate mortality risk.

The answer lies somewhere between “That run felt good” and getting injured. The 38-year-old me was comfortable with 100 miles a week; the 68-year-old me figures anything more than 40 might prove unwise. I believe in the “Listen to your body” philosophy. If something hurts, I back off. I don’t want a scientific study to dictate how much I run.

I’m not normally a science denier but if this study is true, I may drop dead on a trail run about the time another sedentary soul my age keels over on the couch.

Yet a recent Danish study says I’d be healthier if I ran a lot less. Let me share its findings.

I can live with that. To me it’s about quality of life. I look forward to that feel-good time of the day when I head out for a run. The rhythm of moving feet going down the road, flow of random thoughts streaming through my head, and the sights and sounds of passing scenery, as well as the emotional lift running gives me, can’t be measured by science yet are vital to my well-being.

The researchers, as they examined the data further, concluded that, “Although joggers as a group appear to live longer than sedentary non-joggers, light and moderate joggers have lower mortality rates than sedentary non-joggers.” What they said next caught my attention: “Strenuous joggers — people who ran faster than 7 mph for more than four hours a week, or who ran

Michigan Runner - May / June 2015

The data seems to say the reward for running faster than 9-minute miles leads to a death rate equal to non-runners. The study went on to say that a 5mph jogging pace, for one to 2.4 hours per week over two or three days, is best for longevity.

The Copenhagen study has been cited in the New York Times, highlighted in TV news segments and appeared in various fitness and health publications, making it inevitable you will asked, “Is all that jogging really good for you?” (Even after all these years, I still hate the term “jogging.”)

Research conducted by the Copenhagen Heart Study and published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology followed 1,098 healthy joggers and 3,950 non-joggers for about 12 years. By its end, 28 joggers and 128 non-joggers had died. The data led to the conclusion that high-mileage runners died at the same rate as folks who just loafed on the couch.

10

faster than 7 mph for more than 2.5 hours a week with a frequency of more than three times a week – died at a rate not statistically different from that of the sedentary group.”

|

michiganrunner.tv

The Danish study says if I cut my five hours of running a week in half I might live longer, but I wouldn’t be happier. For me what they call “too much running” is really not enough. So I will set science aside and keep running distances that feel right for me at a pace I choose and suffer the consequences. - MR -

Kona Shamrock Run, Plymouth

Stanko, Veneziano Overcome Cold to Win Hot Kona Shamrock Run By Charles Douglas McEwen PLYMOUTH (3/8/2015) — Nick Stanko outbattled Tony Filipek to eke out a victory at the Kona Shamrock 5K, presented by the Kona Running Co. “With about a mile to go I started pressing, but Tony hung on,” said Stanko, 34, of Ann Arbor.

Filipek, 26, of Rochester Hills cracked open a few yards’ edge in the last 800 yards. But Stanko came back. “I thought I had him. But Nick never gave up,” said Filipek, who knocked shoulders with Stanko as they crossed the finish line. Both timed 15:42, Stanko a toe ahead. Their hot finish capped an otherwise-frigid morning. Close to 2,800 entrants, some dressed as leprechauns and others as fairy folk, braved the cold to get an early start on their St. Patrick’s Day festivities. The event was the first race in the 2015 Michigan Runner magazine Runner of the Year Series. Both Stanko and Filipek said they planned to run more races in the series. “I’m trying to get into as many as I can,” said Stanko, who has won past MR honors. “The series always brings in good competition, so that’s where you want to go — places where people are fast.” Lisa Veneziano, 50, of Fenton, who has won four straight MR Runner of the Year titles, picked up where she left off last year, winning the women’s 5K in 20:06. “My whole family ran,” she said. “My husband (Jay Owens, who finished in 20:09) was with me. And my sons are out there. Carter Owens, 13, timed 24:34, while Connor Owens, 10, crossed in 24:48. Elizabeth Koltonow, 24, of Beverly Hills was women’s runner-up in 21:15. Next came masters Krys Brish, 51, of Milford (21:47), Lori Collins, 41, of Ypsilanti (21:54), Heidi Drallos, 52, of Commerce (22:13) and Martha Olsen, 51, of Jackson (22:23). Green enjoyed the cool weather. “It’s a heat wave compared to what I’ve been through this winter,” he said. “I trained hard outside, without using a treadmill. A bit hardcore.” With a combined time of 54:57 in 10K and 5K, Green also won the Dublin Double. Amber Dermyre, 25, of Westland won the women’s 10K in 42:22. Defending Roney champ Jon Rock, 25, of Wixom, blazed to a 14:38 clocking. the course like a raptor, tearing open a big lead on the first mile. “I went out kind of quickly,” he said. “My first mile was around 4:30 or below. Maybe too fast. Overall, though, I’m glad I was aggressive.

Alexandria Vintevoghel, 23, of Casco, used a different tactic than Rock, going out conservatively. She waited until the second mile before taking the women’s lead.

. ”It’s phenomenal to run a against talent like Tony Filipek, Clint Verran, Matt Fecht and Nick Stanko,” Rock continued. “My friend Melanie Brender and sister Jen Rock were here to keep me inspired.”

“I was trying for a six-minute-mile pace,” Vintevoghel said. “When I realized I was a bit under that, I said, ‘OK, let’s go with that.’”

Stanko and Verran battled for the runner-up spot. “Clint and I were together for pretty much the whole race,” said Stanko. “He sat on me, which was a good idea considering the wind. Every now and then I would try to drop him. I’d hear his breathing less and less, but he’d catch back up.

Stanko outsprinted Verran to claim second, 15:08 to 15:11. Next came Filipek, 26, of Rochester in 15:17 and Fecht, 31, of Warren in 15:29. Scott Fiske, 51, of St. Claire Shores won masters honors in 17:12.

“He put in a couple of moves in the last mile and tried to drop me. Then it was down to the kick. Luckily I had something left,” he said.

Vintevoghel, running her first race since graduating from Kent State University, won in 18:17, a 5:54-mile pace. “I’m working toward a half marathon in May,” she said. “This was a good stepping stone toward that.” Kristin Olsen, 26, of South Boardman came in second in 19:01. Running Detroit Streets a Matchless Treat By Kacey Tulley

S

ome years back I made a running change. I showed up for a group run with strangers in a city many people steer clear of.

© C Sherline Frog Prince

I moved from a small town in Montana to go to college in Detroit. People from home tried to talk me out of it, but doing so let me notice a beautiful, changing city.

I have fallen in love with Detroit’s spirit.. It is one of my friends’ and my weekly playgrounds, with no two runs the Kacey Tulley same. Once I lost a game while playing with a running friend. The reward was changed into pennies and spread along roads of our routes. Since that day I’ve stopped for change.

16

Michigan Runner - May / June 2015

Joining the Downtown Detroit Runners and Walkers has been the best change I’ve found. It took a couple times (OK more) of me showing up timidly when I knew no one. Now we religiously huddle up, no matter the weather, to run the streets. Members’ paces are as varied as their personalities. You can run fast, treating the get-together as a tempo. There are leaders and chasers. Or you can run and chat with some of the greatest storytellers there may be. We have dedicated walkers. Some weeks members push youngsters in strollers. Paces can collide because we just want to stick together. You can push yourself to hold a pace for as long as possible, then fall off to recover, knowing week by week you too will change and keeping up the whole run is not out of reach. Like the city we run, our group is rich in running history. It started long before it was trendy to run the D. Each Tuesday we run from a different establishment and do 4- or 6-mile routes mapped for

runners and walkers. This lets us explore every nook and dead-end street in town if we come long and often enough. Each run brings new roads and changing views of the city. These roads paved the way for the rest of the world to follow. Our soles meet the asphalt, cobblestones, bricks and grit that is Detroit in a rhythmic cadence. We see urban art painted on building walls, pre-Depression architecture at The Guardian and Art Deco at the Penombscot building. We see the skyline, Hamtramck’s culture, take in smells of Mexican Village, midtown’s economic upswing. We take in Corktown, Wayne State (my alma mater), glorious cathedrals, the Packard plant, museum district, the Dequindre Cut and urban gardens’ blooms. We see the Ambassador Bridge as the sun sinks into the Detroit River; shimmering pinks, blues and purples that wrap the sky as a final gift of the day.

Photo above: Detroit skyline is viewed from Belle Isle.

Ships’ navigation lights twinkle, reminding us of the start of Michigan’s waterway commerce and first days of forts and fur trading. I see fellow book lovers out for walks and enjoying the lending libraries on the Riverwalk and Cass Avenue. We swoosh past Detroiters who cheer us on as they wait for buses or the People Mover. We sense the strong people who’ve come before us and continue to write the story that builds Detroit. These roads have seen more change than any one run could capture. Now we are adding to that heritage.

Rock CF Rivers Half Marathon, Grosse Ile

Of Lions and Lambs: Rock CF Rivers Half-Marathon Roars By Anthony Targan GROSSE ILE (3/29/15) — In like a lamb, out like a lion. So goes Michigan March weather, which is always volatile as winter turns to spring. So it was no surprise wind-chills in the teens at the Rock CF Rivers Half Marathon gave way to sunshine and temperatures near 40. The fifth-year race (CF = Cystic Fibrosis) is the brainchild of Emily Schaller, who started it in 2011 hoping to attract a few hundred runners. It came in like a lion from the start. “That first year we had 1,450 runners from 17 states,” said Schaller. “It blew our minds.” The race has grown in number of runners, supporters, volunteers (more than 300) and dollars raised to support the Rock CF Foundation each year since. “This year we have 2,300 runners from all over the U.S. and Canada, and raised more than $100,000 to increase the quality of life for patients living with cystic fibrosis,” said Schaller. “The most special part is we have more than two dozen people living with CF who run or walk the half marathon, 5K and relay events. These are the true rock stars and reason we put on this race.” Schaller herself is a runner living with CF. When she was 18 months old, wrote Nancy Averett in her 2010 Runner’s World article “Fresh Air: Running helps a patient with cystic fibrosis clear her lungs and add years to her life,” doctors told Emily’s parents she wouldn’t live to age 18. They predicted she would struggle to breathe and be sickly and weak during her short life. Now in her 30s, Schaller keeps proving the doctors wrong and credits running for helping in her recovery. Women’s masters winner Nicole Derrick of Grosse Isle is proud of the director for “having grown this race into a major local event in just a few years. She is making a difference in many CF patients’ lives. “Everything about this race is great,” continued Derrick. “The course is beautiful, running along the

river for the vast majority. I get nostalgic thinking of the times I’ve run or ridden my bike on the same roads. I loved seeing so many enthusiastic volunteers out there. And who can’t love the homemade cookies at the end!” “What a well-organized race and beautiful course!” exclaimed Erin Larusso of Ypsilanti. “It’s the only race I’ve run where the volunteers were thanking me for running.” Anita Harless of Holly got caught up in the moment and finished like a lion stalking its prey. “I found a guy to keep my focus on,” she said, “and slowly closed the gap. I wanted to see the finish line before trying to pass him. With the finish a couple hundred feet ahead and crowds alongside me, I made my move. People were shouting, the announcer got excited and the adrenaline pumped through my veins like a lunatic. I found a gear I didn’t know I had and beat him!” Other race-day rock stars included halfmarathon men’s winner Scott Smith of Warren (1:16:18), women’s champ Kelsey Bragg of Fenton (1:24:45), male masters king Merlin Elsner (1:18:52) and “Runnin’ Strong” (first out of 128 relay teams in 1:32:17). Winning the 5K were John Olszewski of Macomb (overall and men’s masters champ in 17:58), Brittany Galisdorfer of Detroit (women’s overall in 21:03), and female master Gosia Latala of Grosse Ile (21:14). As for my own half-marathon, I went in like a lion (starting strong and overly confident) and finished like a Detroit Lion (fading badly down the stretch). Still, on this beautiful course — which included a stretch through an airplane hangar and along an airfield — it was a great day just to breath deeply and appreciate the gift of running.

Running Shorts with Scott Hubbard Trivia: Who are the career men’s and women’s leaders for prize money won on the roads?

Don’t You Just Hate It When:

Scott Hubbard

1. Race fields sell out and you very much wanted to run.

8. Suffering plantar faciitis, which lingers. And lingers ...

19. A shoe company replaces a model you like, then raises the price of its inferior make by $10.

9. You finish a track race and see a blood trail running down your shin from a spike wound.

20. You’ve volunteered to lead a 10K race on your bike on a 4° to -15° windchill morning with icy streets.

10. Black flies and deer flies biting on woodsy trails.

21. When a spectator tells you, “There’s only a mile to go” when you know it’s much farther.

11. Non-runners asking in winter, “Won’t your lungs freeze?”

22. When cars turn right on red without looking to see if the coast is clear of pedestrians.

12. When races don’t start on time. 23. You step in an icy puddle at the start of a run. 13. You get misdirected in a race, running too long or short, or take a wrong turn on your own.

2. Your GPS device freezes up internally or due to cold.

14. When drivers lecture you about running in the road.

7. Halfway through a race, you realize you went outPM Page 1 3:25 way too fast.

24. You step in you-know-what. 25. A college teammate sneaks up behind you while you’re standing at a race start line and yanks your shorts to the ground. True story. 26. Driving to a race, you get stuck in traffic. 27. You get a stone in your shoe. 28. Studies find this and that aspect of running is bad for you. 29. Gear Talk. I don’t recall what the initial Facebook post said or asked, but well down the line (it got a lot of responses) was this reply about wearing earbuds for music while running; ”I do it because of the monotony (in running).” I’m impartial about those ”tuned-in” on the run except in races where they mute/block the voices of announcements/directions of race officials. Frankly, I find that maddening. Seems around half of those I see running have wires running from their ears with about half them doing so in races. Why people wear earbuds is their business, but hearing somebody say they do so because they find running monotonous tweaked my nose. I’ve never tuned into music while running and I’ve run enough miles to circle the globe at the equator more than three times. I never, not once, found running monotonous. I’m not sure what others aren’t seeing about running I see. Understand I love my music and have way more than my share at home, but listening on the run would be far too distracting for me, thus zero appeal. I’m entertained by the activity (running) and things around me, thoughts assembling and giving way to others.

bike trainer and indoor tracks. I’ve never been on a treadmill and barely tolerate the trainer, a necessary evil in winter. Be happy you can run in winter; cycling in it takes a hearty will. In a similar vein, I note all those who share their mileage figures from various electronic devices. When the total is spelled out in tenths (greater or less than half ) and hundredths, I’m humored by the need for such precision. I’m humored because that seems fussy, bordering on finicky. I’ve always rounded off to the nearest half or whole mile — and even then I was guessing. This coming from a guy immersed in the world of measuring courses for certification, bringing them to a point as accurate and finite as tools allow. You’d think I’d be all about numbers in my training log that reflect ”true” mileage. Not once have I taken my measuring bike around a training or race loop to check mileage. Why not? I’ve never cared to know the ”exact” distance. I’d convert time run, a precise measure, to miles (based on average pace). This works for a couple reasons: it was close enough for my purposes and I’d no desire to become a slave to my miles. Hey, what works for you is key, something of substance, not necessarily better than another way of doing things, but valuable in its own way.

Run This Way. I rarely recommend races here but am overdue. I have my favorites: the Fifth Third River Bank 25K, Dexter-Ann Arbor half marathon, Volkslaufe 20K, Crim 10-mile and Detroit Free Press Marathon. I’ve measured, worked at and/or run them all. Rich race histories. Here in my hometown of Fenton we have the Bastille Day 15K in July, a race you love to fear for its rural feel and hills, hills and more hills. Only the Munising Pictured Rocks half marathon is tougher. The U.P. race is a big favorite of mine also. Arriving in town for it, you can’t see what you’re in for, but the road lifts after barely half a mile. Fair to add what goes up, comes down. But that going up is for those who love running and enjoy a challenge. I’ve never run the course but I’ve cycled and raced a bike over the roads many times. Love the terrain, love the way it works the mind and body!

Answer: Paula Radcliffe of England for the women; Haile Gebrsellasie of Ethiopia for the men.

Runners honor the Irish in many shades of green. DETROIT (3/15/2015) — Jon Rock ended Mike Andersen’s three-year winning streak at the 33rd annual St. Patrick’s Parade Corktown 5K, presented by the Fraternal Order of United Irishmen and Strategic Staffing Solutions. Rock, 25, of Wixom owned the race from the start. “I went out hard,” he said. “That’s how I like to run. Mike (Anderson, 28, of Walled Lake) is a great guy. I lost sleep thinking about the quality of the field. “I’m glad I could put it together today,” he said. Rock, who attended the U.S. Air Force Academy, finished in 14:46. Andersen (15:28) edged Zachaeus Widner, 23, of Okemos for second by one second. “Jon’s a tough competitor, no matter the distance,” said Andersen. “He made a move really early. After that, I was racing for second.”

Jesse Anderson, 24, of Flint finished fourth in 15:38, followed by Bennett Prud’homme, 25, of South Lyon in 15:58.

“I’m a huge, huge fan of the city. I love coming here and running. Ovidiu Olteanu, 44, of Commerce led the male masters in 17:07; Jim Heebsh, 50, of Rochester the grand masters in 18:09 and John Tarkowski, 62, of Northville the senior grand masters in 20:01.

Former Corktown winner Denisa Costescu, 39, of Commerce led the women for the first two miles this year. Kayla Gagnon, 22, a recent Wayne State University graduate, passed her at that point. “I went out really conservatively,” said Gagnon. “It was my first race since track at Wayne State last spring. I didn’t want to go out fast and die hard.” Gagnon pulled away to prevail in 18:05. Nest came Costescu (18:31), Carissa Galloway, 24, of Auburn Hills (18:41), Alex Dutcher, 22, of Flint (18:57) and Melissa Broyles, 37, of Milford (19:56). The thousands of spectators on the sidelines motivated Gagnon. “I loved the crowd,” she said. “The last mile everybody was cheering and yelling, ‘It’s the first girl!’ That was nice.” She had no worries about getting lost on the course. “I ran the streets of Detroit many times

This year’s races, which also included a one mile, saw more than 8,500 participants run up and down Michigan Avenue.

“I love Detroit,” said Rock. “I’m a huge, huge fan of the city. I love coming here and running. My sister (Jen Rock) was a Wayne State all-American and I have many friends there.” Detroit’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade took place after the races. Sponsors included United Irish Societies, New Balance and the City of Detroit. The event raises money for the St. Patrick Senior Center, Detroit Public Safety Foundation and

Hong Weng, bib 406, leads the 4:30 pace group, including half marathoner Anna Crouch (bib 1212) and marathoners Sarah Porretta (bib 245) and Christopher Rockwell (bib 267). By Charles Douglas McEwen ANN ARBOR (3/29/15) — They endured fingernumbing, cheek-burning cold and merciless hills, yet still crossed the Ann Arbor Marathon finish line in droves. More than 2,100 runners and walkers completed the 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon. Women’s marathon winner Jana Sedlacek, 21, of Okemos thrived in the below-freezing weather. “I was afraid it was going to be too cold,” said the Michigan State University veterinary student. “But I shed some layers at the start — and it was beautiful.” Wearing a long-sleeved Spartan shirt in Wolverine country, Sedlacek received a few jeers along with many cheers. She kept her eyes on the prize the whole way.

“I was with a guy holding a 3:05-pace sign the whole way,” said Sedlacek, who finished in 3:04:55. “He was awesome. This was a PR by almost five minutes.” She won her first 26.2-miler, the 2013 Lansing Marathon, in 3:09:22. Next came Angela Carron, 36, of Canton (3:14:19) and the masters queen Josephine Weeden, 46, of Saline (3:19:29). Men’s winner Zachary Ornelas, 23, of Ann Arbor also ran faster than he’d expected, clocking 2:34:22. The former University of Michigan star won the 2013 Detroit Free Press Marathon in 2:20:11, but it was on a much flatter course with better weather. “The hills here were unrelenting,” said Ornelas. “The flattest section was in Gallup Park.

Everything else was hills.” The winner also battled Nick Stanko, 34, of Ann Arbor. “He (Stanko) dropped a pretty good surge with 10 miles to go,” said Ornelas. “I had another big race (the Boston Marathon) coming up, so I stayed controlled and eventually caught back up.” “I took the lead around 17 miles,” said Stanko. “We were clicking along at 5:30 or 5:40 miles. I didn’t want to go (for the lead) that soon, but I sensed a gap opening so I tried to take advantage. Marathon winner Jana Sedlacek (bib 284) finished in 3:04:55, a PR by almost five minutes. She stayed with pacer, Kenneth Brooks, who finished in 3:04:56.

Zachary Ornelas, 23, of Ann Arbor ran faster than he’d expected, clocking 2:34:22

experience,” he said. Stanko finished 1:47 back in 2:36:09, followed by Alex White, 30, of Washington Township (2:44:36). Rich Power, 51, of Rochester led the male masters and fifth overall in 2:52:41. Recent U-M graduate Justin Waraniak, 22, who now lives in Fenton won the men’s half marathon in 1:14:11. Honolulu native Christina Wong, 25, paced the women in 1:29:16. “I was worried when I woke up this morning and saw the temperature was 17 degrees, said Wong, now a U-M law student. “Considering my training, it was a solid effort.” Stephane Denoual, 36, a Frenchman who lives in Ann Arbor, ran away with the men’s 10K in 37:31. Former Western Michigan University standout Lauren McUmber, 23, of Jackson, led the women in 40:24.

“I started a little fast,” said McUmber, who went through the 5K mark at 19:18. “So I slowed a little bit after that. But my time is a PR. My old one was 41:30.” Claiming 5K titles were Glenn Collins, 30, of Cleveland, Ohio (16:18) and Lauren Hutchens, 39, of Ann Arbor (20:34). “It was so cold I couldn’t feel my feet,” Hutchens said with a shiver. “I was registered for the half marathon until an hour ago, then decided to do the 5K instead. I’m glad I did.” The event, which also included a kids dash, raised money for the Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation and education-based nonprofits. April Fools Twinkie Run, Ann Arbor

Record Field Takes Cake at Twinkie Run

By Charles Douglas McEwen

Runners eat a Twinkie at the start of the race and then eat a second Twinkie after the first lap. ANN ARBOR (4/1/15) — Although the Twinkie Run took place on April Fool’s Day, its record turnout was no joke.

other lap and finish. You don’t have to eat a Twinkie. But those who eat one deduct a minute from their time. Those who eat two subtract two minutes.

The field for this 5K, presented by Ann Arbor Active Against ALS and held at Gallup Park, rose to 658, up almost 200 from 2014.

Craig Ringbloom, 28, of Monroe took advantage, winning with a 17:22 (19:22 actual, less two Twinkies). “I struggled with the first one,” he said. “I washed down the second with water and that worked better.”

Shawn Jyawook started the Twinkie Run in memory his friend Jim Mong, who died from ALS (aka Lou Gehrig’s disease) in 2009. Many runners and walkers came out specifically to support the battle against that illness. The race also owes its growth to the popularity of the Twinkie. Running and cream-filled cakes don’t go together as seamlessly as baseball and hot dogs. But entrants did consume many Twinkies. The rules go as follows: At the start of the race, you eat a Twinkie, run a lap in Gallup Park, then scarf down another Twinkie. Then you run an-

Slauson Middle School eighth-grader Zac Williston, 13, ran the day’s fastest time, 18:23, but only consumed one Twinkie and thus placed second by one second. Two-Twinkie eater Alex Williams, 30, finished third with an adjusted 18:26. Angie Markel, 39, of Dexter crossed the finish first for the women in 20:33. She ate one Twinkie, which reduced her time to 19:33 and gave her the overall victory. “It sat heavy,” she said. “It was tough to get down.” Next came two-Twinkie eaters Chloe Brittain, 14, of Wheeler (an adjusted 19:56) and Danie Matasik, 43, of Chelsea (20:00).

Most of the field ate both Twinkies, plus one or two after the race. Some brought their own for a homemade Twinkie contest won by Grayce Langheine and her daughter, Jasmine Bigelow. “We made a red velvet cake Twinkie with cream cheese filling, then dipped it in coconut,” said Langheine. “Getting the cream cheese stuffing inside it was hard,” said Bigelow. The race was an Ann Arbor Track Club event. For complete results, go to activeagainstals.org. - MR -

Running with Tom Henderson © C Sherline Frog Prince

mall world, getting an email from Rich Perlberg about a cool, crazy 5K the Brighton Rotary is putting on June 20 at Mt. Brighton. I used to work with Rich at the Observer & Eccentric Newspapers, a chain of twice-weekly papers in suburban Detroit, in the early and mid-1980s. I hadn’t heard from him

writing true-crime books for St. Martin’s Press. It was true crime that hooked up Rich and me again. In March, he stopped at a place in West Branch and was surprised to see books I had written on a little stand by the cash register. He bought one called “Darker Than Night” about two Detroit-area deer hunters who went missing in 1985 near Mio and were never seen, again. Eighteen years later a great state cop named Bronco Lesneski, working the old case on his own time, solved it and got convictions on two scumbag brothers.

in 25 years, at least. I’d been a sportswriter at the Detroit Free Press as a young punk in the 1970s, got divorced and messed up with cocaine, quit work and started cutting lawns for a living. The same summer I was cutting lawns, 1981, I figured I needed to show my ex-bosses I was clean again and couldn’t think of a better way to do that than to run a marathon, although I had no desire to be a runner. So I’d cut lawns for 10 hours a day, then head out for however many miles the marathon training schedule I had taped to my fridge called for. As the summer ended, the job ended too. Lucky for me, Mike Arnholt, a former copy editor in the Free Press sports department who had taken a management position at the O&E, gave me a job. I was something of an idiot savant. I’d had no journalism training when I got hired to sharpen pencils just out of college at the Free Press, and it was only through a series of flukes that I ended up as a sportswriter. There wasn’t anyone better at writing up a hockey game that ended at 10:15 with a deadline of 10:30. That was the savant part, but I really knew nothing about being a reporter. The O&E changed that. I floated around the various newspapers, working on special projects or filling in for people on vacation. Editors knew they were getting a good writer when I hired on. They had no idea they were getting a completely unschooled reporter who had never been to a city council meeting, or inside a courtroom or didn’t know how to reach people by phone to cover the kinds of basic news stories community newspapers thrive on. Rich and others patiently taught me how to do the basics. I thought I’d work a year or so at the O&E and move back to the Freep. Instead, I stayed eight years before moving on to magazine work and

The short author’s bio in the book told Rich I was working at Crain’s Detroit Business and was a marathon runner. He was able to get an e-mail for me at work and send a note. “I grabbed the one about the murder of the two hunters in Mio, since I grew up in that neck of the woods. I was long gone when it happened but recall the story,” Rich wrote. “It was a good read and a fairly-brutal rendition of some people’s lifestyle in that part of the state.” One good turn — him buying the book, which

I was something of an idiot savant. will mean 50 cents in royalties to me next year — leads to another: a plug for a race he is helping put on. Funny how life works out. Who would have thought that when I started learning how to be a real reporter under him and others, just as I was to run what I was sure would be my first and last marathon, the 1981 Free Press, 34 years later he’d be helping put on races and I’d still be running and, better yet, writing about running for Michigan Runner. I’ve been to the event Web site, topofthemountaindashorcrash.com, and it looks like a blast. The 5K course would be tough enough without obstacles, with huge elevation changes on the ski hill and flatter reprieves on the adjacent golf course, which will be closed for the day. Then there are what they are billing as the pond dash, duck rope, underbridge obstacle, tube bridge, climbing wall and snow-gun slalom. You Tough Mudders out there will be happy to know no electrical shocks are planned en route.

Organizers have planned nine separate starting waves half an hour apart. They have optimistically set a limit of 125 for each. Entry fees are downright cheap compared to other obstacle-type events: $100 for a special VIP wave, $55 for the wave for the most-competitive runners and $45 for all other waves. Proceeds will benefit local handicap ramp building projects, scholarships, the Gleaner’s Food Pantry, Thanksgiving dinners and Rotary International efforts to eradicate polio and provide clean drinking water in third-world countries. There’s another small-world angle to all this. Perlberg bought the book at a Forward’s Shell station in West Branch. “That’s a chain of Shell gas stations (from Gaylord to Bay City) owned by a guy who lived three doors down from me where I grew up. He was a golfing partner with my dad,” wrote Rich. So how did my book end up by a cash register at a Shell station? After it came out in 2006, I got a call from a retired marketing guy near Mio who wanted to know why none of the small bookstores up north had my book. The case had been a huge deal for many years there and people shouldn’t have to have to drive to a Barnes & Noble in Bay City to buy it, he complained. (Retired, he apparently wasn’t an Amazon kind of guy.) I agreed and told him I had nothing to do with distribution. He took it upon himself to call St. Martin’s and demand to become a distributor. They made him pay up front for 12 dozen books. While they were being delivered, he made up some small wire racks to hold a few copies, printed out a label that said it was the missing deer hunters’ case and pitched shop owners all over northern Michigan. They wouldn’t have to pay anything up front. He was paying $4 wholesale for the books, which sold retail for $7.99. They could keep $2 of each book they sold. He sold the first 12 dozen, then 12 dozen more, then St. Martin’s started shipping him pallets of books. Within a year they were in nearly every gas station, hardware and beauty salon up north and he’d sold 20,000 copies, thousands of them at the Forward Shells. He made $40K. The storeowners divvied up $40K. My take? $10K minus my agent’s 15 percent. But it was $10K I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Here’s to smart marketing guys, stupid killers and cool runs. - MR -
