Something Else
J
By Scott Sullivan

esus just served me at the mini-mart. He was maybe 20, had a scraggly goatee and white, squareframed glasses.
He wasn’t a blond, fair-skinned Jew like in pictures I saw growing up. He appeared Hispanic. Did He pronounce His name “Hey Zeus” instead of “Geez Us”? Could He still be real?
I plunked down $1.99 and Jesus turned it into a Diet Coke. It had been that before, but now it was mine. Such is money’s power. As I transformed the vessel from full to empty I felt my attitude change. Bladder too. I became optimistic salvation lies in all things and pessimistic we’ll ever see it.
Everyone can be someone else — even journalists. Driving home I saw a gorilla dancing on a moving van. A man in a costume was trying to draw eyes and increase sales. How could I not want to move after seeing this? Where? Why not Cleveland? I called to reserve a rental car, looked for the Enterprise address, circled the Kent County Airport and didn’t see it. A small sign on my second loop pointed me into a dark garage and across a spike pad. “Don’t go back or the track will shred your tires” another sign said.
The garage was lined with cars but no humans or signs of Enterprise. At last I saw someone. “Park here and go there,” she said. I was at the 44th Street location, said the man inside, but had made reservations at 28th Street. I got out without shredding my tires, but there were long lines at 28th Street. When I reached the front I learned they were out of my make and model. You can down- or up-grade at the same price, a woman said.
This proved more a no-brainer than I’d thought. I chose the latter and was rewarded by so many bells and whistles I couldn’t make the radio or lights work. I did figure out how to turn on and off the front wipers but not the rear; it kept waving at drivers behind through both my 5-hour trips.
During the drive I thought of other things I could be someday and make money. We all have animal guides, shamans says: the bear, tiger, skunk … each leads us in ways of wisdom. Same for products. Tony the Tiger, the Keebler elves, Toucan Sam guide our food buying. Why not be such a representative? Look how Mr. Whipple squeezed Charmin and Mr. Clean cleaned up. I was in Cleveland; why not be the Indian? Too politically freighted. How about the Cleveland Cavalier? Nah, sounded like a spaniel. A Brown? They were named for ex-owner Paul Brown, a human. We can’t have that. I was there to shoot stills and videos, do voiceovers and write about the Rite-Aid Marathon. Folks were big on rock. It’s where John D. Rockefeller invented Standard Oil, Alan Freed the term “rock’n’roll,” Lebron (“Give me the rock”) James basketball and home to the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame. There’s big money in the Stone Age.
Cleveland was the home and bedrock for Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Halle Berry, Paul Newman, Joe Walsh, Dr. Oz and the guys who invented Superman. The Cuyahoga River running through it has caught fire 13 times.
The marathon started in a downpour. My shooting partner could not find signals to fly his drone, my camera’s rain cover didn’t work and the gas station owner whose lot we parked in threatened to have us towed. I had just two words for him. Only 26 miles and more than six hours to go. Jesus, give me another Diet Coke. I was having the time of my life. Rock on!

Running Shorts with Scott Hubbard Feeling It.
My Facebook posts over eight days in April deserve to be shared with a wider audience. From April 17: Last year in this space I made comments on the prospects of an American winning the Boston Marathon, something not done on the men’s side since 1983 (Greg Meyer) and on the women’s side since ‘85 (Lisa Rainsberger), both University of Michigan grads. Last year 2004 U.S. Olympic marathon silver medalist Meb Keflezgihi stole the win in 2:08:37. Will 2015, 30 years since Lisa won, be the year for an American woman to win? Odds are tipped in Americans’ favor because two of our best, 2012 Olympic marathoners Shalane Flanagan and Desi Linden, both of whom have run fast at Boston before, are entered. On the men’s side, Meb is back and so is one of Michigan’s own, Dathan Ritzenhein, a three-time Olympian with a 2:07 marathon best. The field of East Africans at Boston is top-heavy with fast athletes. Look at the 2015 numbers:: so far 28 Kenyan men and 31 Ethiopian men have dipped under 2:10. The fastest American has run 2:12.
It takes America’s best to match up with the world’s best (title to the East Africans) in distance events, with a nod to Mo Farah of England. We have that on Monday. Boston doesn’t have pacemakers so the race will be just that, a race. Want to win? Put your neck on the line. Here’s to another great Boston Monday; may the best man and woman win, regardless of country.
April 19: Just bawled my eyes out watching a CBS “Sunday Morning” piece on Lauren Hill, who played college hoops for Mt. St. Joseph’s. She died of cancer on April 10, age 19. Many will remember her scoring on a layup in an early-November game vs. Hiram. Her want, desire and determination to live life in the moment, to feel like a “su10
April 21: My pal Don Richmond sent an email
I went down to the local Cyclefit Sports shop in Fenton, got a tube and headed back. When I got back, the bike owner’s mom asked how much the tube was. “It cost nothing,” I said. “Pay it forward someday. My pay will be a happy face on a little boy.” He finally got it back together and was off. Happy faces all around.
Find a superlative, double it and it still misses Samuelson’s career trajectory. And she’s such a nice, down-to-earth woman with two grown kids and still living in Maine, her home from birth. There has never been an athlete who’s done so well for so long. Add that she helps stage a hugely-popular mid-August road race in Maine. Geesh. Put her face on the new $20 bill.
Later April 19: Was it inspiration from Lauren Hill? After finishing my longest and fastest solo bike ride in I-can’t-remember-how-long, two kids knocked on my door. “Can you help us with a bad tire?” they asked. They were around age seven. I quickly determined it was a flat back tire tube.
April 20: Soon enough, the largest group of ac-
complished athletes on Earth will take on one of sport’s transcendent contests, the Boston Marathon. Women go off at 9:30 a.m., men 30 minutes later, followed by waves at regular intervals. The journey so many have spent so many months preparing for is here; here’s hoping it is a good one, memorable and safe for all.
Later April 20: Amby Burfoot’s Runner’s World piece on Friday, focusing on Michigan and its rich tradition of distance running excellence, is looking downright prescient with a fourth place for Linden and seventh for Ritzenhein, the top women’s and men’s American finishers.
Many have remarked how gutsy and bold it was for them to take the lead, Linden for a considerable while. I’m not sure leading was such a great thing, especially while surrounded by many of the world’s best Africans. Still, it seemed right to each, nothing more than that. Beyond the two Olympians I’ve heard of many strong Michigan fin-

For the women, 35 Ethiopians and 11 Kenyans have broken 2:30. Only one American has done so. Last year, more than 100 Kenyan and 45 Ethiopian men broke 2:10. Only Meb, with his 2:08 at Boston, did so among Americans. More than 70 Ethiopian and 40 Kenyan women broke 2:30, while only five Americans managed that. A staggering difference of speed and depth!

noting Joan Samuelson’s remarkable 2:54:03 time at age 57 yesterday. My reply: Her longevity and very high-quality performances over so many years defy description and perspective. She won Boston in 1979 in 2:35 as a Bowdoin College student. Her time 36 years later is a new single-age world’s best, to pad her long list of accomplishments.
April 25: Looking forward to Day 3 of the Hills-
dale College Gina Relays. Last night, before the evening events started, I read something that appears in the meet program about meet namesake Gina Van Laar Lanser. I’ve read it many times before, but this time the message got to me (she died too young of an auto accident). I neared the end and a particular passage nearly made me break down. I had to pause 10 seconds before continuing, started, then had to pause another five seconds. I feared breaking down completely. but wasn’t unhappy I’d been moved so much. At last I read 2 Timothy 4.7 from the Bible: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” I looked down on the field. Oh my. People were clapping. That was a first and it was all for you, Gina! I share this not for me but you. Honored to be a conduit. Answer: On the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing. - MR -

Perry Badia: A Friend Gone Too Soon By Jim Laurie
P
erry Badia and I met almost 25 years ago at the New Baltimore Jingle Bell Run. He was looking for a group to run with and I belonged to the Riders Running Club, which met on Sundays and Tuesdays during the winter for runs.
One of my great memories of Perry cane at the Detroit Free Press Marathon one year. He finished about a half hour ahead of me and was already changed when I came in. It was really cold. My gloves had gotten wet at an aid station so my hands were frozen. I couldn’t untie my shoes, so Perry bent and undid them for me ... a small thing, but just so him. We became fast friends and started to do more with the group outside of running. We talked a lot, sports mostly. But current events were always a hot
Perry got married a year before I did and was best man at my wedding. Kids came, but we still had runs to look forward to. As we got older the runs weren’t as fast or long, but we still would meet up or see each other out running.

Perry was faster than I was, but I was improving. We started to run together with the group and on days when the group didn’t meet. We were both about the same age, single and enjoyed training/running.
topic. You know how it is on runs, especially with someone you’ve run a lot with: conversation just flows … or not. You get comfortable with the pace and person you’re with and the miles fly by.
The last nine months or so I didn’t talk with or see as much of Perry, as my own running was coming to an end. But I’d still see his name in races on the web. On May 14 Perry was hit by car while out for a run and died. The swiftness of his passing still stuns and hurts those of us who knew him.

Dexter Ann Arbor Run
Records Fall Despite Deluge at Dexter-Ann Arbor Run By Charles Douglas McEwen
DEXTER-ANN ARBOR (5/31/15) — Kenyan Valentine Kibet, 25, broke Laurel Park’s 1996 women’s half-marathon record by more than a minute despite a cold, drenching downpour at the 42nd annual Dexter-Ann Arbor Run. Running alongside the overflowing Huron River, Kibet outdistanced the other women to finish in 1:13:35. “I was alone but knew I had to push,” said Kibet, whose record at the distance is 1:11:34.“I wanted the course (record) very bad.” She claimed a $500 bonus for doing so to go with her $1,000 overall women’s winner prize. Sarah Boyle, 29, of Brighton, who won the Martian Invasion of Races Meteor 10K in April and placed second in the Fifth Third River Bank 10K in May, finished runner-up in 1:15:38. Kenyan Priscah Bartenge was third in 1:19:08. Nancy Schubring, 54, of Novi paced the masters in 1:34:55.
Clint Verran of Rochester Hills, who won this race in 2008, 2012 and 2013, celebrated turning 40 by claiming the masters title in 1:10:19. The day saw other records set. Erin Webster, 29, of Dearborn, runner-up here last year, captured the women’s 5K for the fifth time, eclipsing the four won by Suzanne Larsen. The former University of Michigan All American finished in 17:37, well ahead of her closest rivals Schirin Rangnick, 17 (18:59) and Chrissy Zimmerman, 25 (19:24). Both are from Ann Arbor. “For the first mile,” said Webster of running in the deluge, “I watched all my steps because I didn’t want to fall. I thought it’s better to be cautious and take it slow (initially) than to wipe out.” Men’s winner Alex Russeau tackled the 5K aggressively from the gun. “I knew the first mile is mostly downhill,” said Russeau, 26, of Dundee. “I was really looking forward to that. I went through it really fast, then just tried to sustain (the lead).”
Kenyans finished 1-2-3 in the men’s half marathon. Moses Kipkosgei-Bowen, 23, won in 1:14:31, followed by Julius Koskei, 32 (1:16:56) and Emanuel Korir, 34 (1:07:33).
He timed 15:05. “I was shooting for sub-15,” said Russeau. “But given the rain and wetness of the course, I’m stoked about the time I had.”
John Gries, 28, of Haslett placed fifth overall and first among Michigan runners in 1:08:30. “Obviously the rain weighs you down and makes you feel heavier,” he said. “It was windy, too, as you went uphill at the start. There was a lot to contend with.”
Josiah Swanson, 22, of Mankato, who timed 15:27, moved up to second after finishing third last year. Ian Forsyth, 43, of Ann Arbor took third overall in 15:33, which broke Pet Hallop’s 16:04 masters course record set in 1996.

Lee Shaw, 40, of Livonia, led the masters for most of the first two miles. “Then Ian passed me as if I was standing still,” said Shaw, who finished in 16:05. “He absolutely hammered it.” Avi Bregman, 23, of Ann Arbor won the men’s 10K in 32:14, followed by Ian Hancke, 24, of Ypsilanti in 32:38 and Hunor Csutak, 26, of Plymouth in 33:00. Paul Mayer was the masters champ in 38:43. Elise Dombkowski, 18, a Dexter resident entering her sophomore year at Michigan Tech University, topped the women in 41:53. Next came Megan Thomas, 28, of Allen Park (44:32) and masters champ Jenny Vartanian, 45, of Toledo (45:03). “I wasn’t sure going into it because it was really cold and wet,” Dombkowski said. “But once I got going, it rolled really nicely. The road wasn’t flooded, which was nice. There was a pack of really great guys right with me who I could work with the entire time.” She had one minor hiccup. “My shoe came untied at three miles,” said Dombkowski, who didn’t stop to tie it. “So I focused on not tripping myself from there. Other than that, it felt great. I was happy to be out there running in the rain.” For complete race results, go to dxa2.com. - MR -

Book Review
‘Fast After 50’ Offers Sage Advice By Dave Foley intensity into your training plan. Because there is the likelihood of overuse injuries, Friel offers suggestions for designing a program that will increase one’s recreational or racing fitness while minimizing the chances of injury. Knowing the frequency and duration of training needs to be reduced, he lays out a plan for incorporating cross training. Strength training, cycling, swimming, plyometrics and rowing all are discussed as cross-training options for runners, along with ideas on how to use these disciplines to enhance your fitness without breaking down.
Dave Foley “Fast After 50: How to Race Strong for the Rest of Your Life,” by Joe Friel, 2015, paperback, Velopress.
T
rain hard. Race fast. That was my mantra as a competitive runner in my 30s. Back then my body absorbed high-mileage weeks and burner workouts. I thought I was invincible. By the time I was 40, things began to change. Ten years after that I struggled to put together a training program that wouldn’t get me injured. I wish Joe Friel’s “Fast After 50” had been available then. The author, now 70, is a top-ranked age-group triathlete and has coached endurance athletes since 1980. Drawing on that background and extensive research (there are more than 20 pages of footnotes), he offers an easy-to-understand analysis of changes that happen to one’s body as it ages. With stem cells dying, oxygen uptake dropping, muscle mass shrinking, telomeres shortening and losing one heartbeat a year, it’s not easy being an aging endurance athlete. Friel offers strategies on how we, of the senior set, can make the best of the situation. Training plans are presented to fit the goals and capabilities of recreational and severely-competitive runners. The core idea is we must “use it or lose it.” Unused resources dissipate. If you want to race 7minute miles, you have to bake that level of 14

Friel makes the case failure to eat right and get enough sleep will undermine the best training program. While noting seniors need less sleep than younger athletes, he still advocates getting 7-8 hours a night and points out a short nap after lunch is another positive for good health. More valuable than massage, stretching or icing to recover from workouts, Friel argues our bodies need is to be rehydrated, then rejuvenated by eating the right foods. For older athletes, that means taking protein within 30 minutes after finishing strenuous exercise. While the traditional carbohydrate diet helps replenish depleted glycogen stores, protein is needed by seniors to restructure slow-twitch endurance muscles. He cites studies showing there may actually be reduced need for carbohydrates and fats with aging. It’s refreshing and, at times, depressing to see an entire book focusing on being old and an athlete. But Friel is being realistic — succeeding as a senior athlete isn’t easy. While this heavily-researched book illuminates the perils we face, it also points the way to changes in our training that will keep us healthier and less likely to get injured. - MR -
Beyond the Chip
Running Through Cancer By Robin Sarris-Hallop
T
his is a column I never imagined I would be writing. My husband Peter Hallop and I have focused on living health-conscious lifestyles as active, competitive runners. No one could have been more surprised than we were to learn one of us had cancer …
worked his way up to all running on most days. Since then he has worked his way back to 3-7 miles per day of running. In April he began doing light workouts and picking up the pace in his runs. The doctors are impressed with his fitness level and way he has rebounded.
Almost two years ago Peter noticed difficulty swallowing, particularly when eating bagels or bread. Drinking anything carbonated also began to bother him.
Peter is working hard to regain the strength he had before his illness. As a close observer, I know it is due to his discipline, positive attitude and hard work every day.
His stoic nature and high pain tolerance led him to wait to see a doctor. He delayed talking about it with me for almost a year.
We are doing the best we can to live in the present, celebrating his improvements and current health, and not worry about what the future might bring.
Once he told me about it in May 2014, I insisted he see the doctor. After a series of tests we received the sobering news: He had a cancerous tumor in his lower esophagus that was spreading into his stomach. On the one hand, we were shocked and, on the other, we were prepared for the worst. After his diagnosis last June, Peter continued to run and race, but his strength and health deteriorated quickly. He experienced fatigue, nausea, leg pain and weight loss. He was determined to keep exercising and stay as fit as possible through the ordeal we knew was ahead. Peter began a five-week treatment of chemotherapy and radiation early last August. He continued to run and rode his bike to radiation treatment every day. While he was able to continue cycling through the last day of treatment, about halfway through it the doctors suggested he shift to walking rather than daily running, as he was tiring himself out more than he was helping. There is no doubt his fitness level helped him get through the treatments with fewer side effects. At the same time, it was clear early on the chemo and radiation were affecting his tumor. Within a couple weeks of starting treatment, his swallowing improved and he could eat more easily. The five weeks of chemo and radiation were difficult, often because he only learned the hard way from experience what he needed to do to get through it. His taste for food changed constantly and he would only be able to eat some things for a short time before they made him so nauseous he could no longer eat them. One of our biggest concerns was potential weight loss. At 6-feet tall, Peter had weighed only 150 pounds since high school, leaving little room to spare for loss. After hearing how much weight most patients lost during treatment and post-surgery, we knew he would have to work hard to keep his weight up. 16

Our lives will never be as they were before cancer. When someone you love has been very ill, you notice and appreciate the little things you might have taken for granted in the past.
Ian Forsyth (bib 193) and Peter Hallop (bib 891) line up for the Burns Park 5K. In the weeks after chemo and radiation leading up to surgery, he started to feel better and was able to eat more normally. He walked daily with some light jogging to hold onto his remaining fitness to prepare for the hard second stage of treatment. In late October he underwent a 9-hour surgery removing the lower portion of his esophagus and his entire stomach. He was hospitalized for 11 days after the operation. Pete was out of bed and up walking the morning after surgery. On his first day home he was able to walk to the corner coffee shop and back, and we hoped he was on his way to a smooth recovery. He began walking daily on our treadmill and lightly exercising on our spinning bike. However, due to some complications, he was re-hospitalized just before Christmas for a chest infection that required a 5-day in-patient stay on antibiotics. At the lowest point his weight dropped to near 130 pounds. Once this cleared up, he was able to eat a wider range of foods and his weight started to climb. He also felt better on solid food and was able to increase his walking every day. On Jan. 9 he was cleared to begin jogging and doing light exercise along with eating a regular diet. He started to feel the best he had since before his diagnosis. He started with alternating walk/jogs and |

Seeing Peter line up at the start of the Burns Park 5K with a race number on his singlet was one of those moments. He ran an 8:20-per-mile pace and is continuing to improve every week. He plans to run one race a month for the next several months and to use his results to gauge his recovery. Many of our friends and family offered amazing support to us before, during and after Peter’s surgery. We are thankful for the cards, emails and calls we received from many members of the running community. This support has meant a great deal to Peter. We will remain grateful for every day given to us by the miraculous medical care at the University of Michigan. Cancer can be a wake-up call to the preciousness of our lives. It is a vivid reminder none of us knows how much time we have and we should cherish every run and day. Peter Hallop, a runner since 1961, was an NAIA AllAmerican indoor and outdoor track and cross country runner. He is a two-time Michigan Runner of the Year recipient, two-time Dexter-Ann Arbor Run winner and nationally-ranked masters runner, once holding the masters 2-mile record. He is also a former coach of the Ann Arbor Track Club. Robin Sarris-Hallop has been running for almost 35 years without missing a season. She was the 1999 Michigan Female Runner of the Year, 1998 and 2002 Master’s Runner and 2006 Senior Runner of the Year. In May 2015 she retired from the University of Michigan after 33 years. She hopes she might now have time to get back in road-racing shape. Robin also enjoys making art quilts, playing mandolin and banjo, reading history, gardening and spending time with her husband and Johnny, their Australian shepherd. - MR -
Moonlight Bootlegger, Northville
Moonlight Bootlegger 5K: Dark Paths to Fun By Charles Douglas McEwen
NORTHVILLE (5/9/15) — It started at the end of twilight and traveled into the depths of a humid night. The Moonlight Bootlegger 5K, presented by Trivium Racing, followed candles and glow sticks, like a trail of breadcrumbs, through the woods at the 944-acre Maybury State Park.
the top masters woman, came in third in 24:48. Michelle Bone, 48, of Wixom placed fourth in 25:01. After finishing, runners drank “moonshine” (a variety of beverages — none of which were actual moonshine) and listened to bluegrass music.
Trivium Racing will offer another Moonllight Bootlegger 5K Aug. 14, at the 4,500-acre Ionia State Recreation Area in Saranac starting at 9 p.m. For complete race results, go to triviumracing.com. - MR -
As they traversed hilly, slightly-muddy trails, runners could imagine themselves as rumrunners carrying contraband for guys named Nucky and Lucky during the 1920s Prohibition era. Or they could just run the race. As Lee Shaw, 40, of Livonia did. Shaw, who won a Bootlegger 5K at Maybury last November in 17:37, ran even faster this goround, finishing in 16:30. “I was first master (2:43:12) at the Pittsburgh Marathon last weekend,” he said. “I didn’t have to work as hard as I thought I would. So my legs were pretty fresh here.” Shaw, who led from start to finish, had no trouble finding his way in the dark. “It went pretty well — a little humid, a little buggy,” he said. “I live around here, so I’m pretty familiar with the course.” Zack Bolton, 30, of Birmingham, finished second in 18:14. Isaac Grubke, 18, and Jarod Grubke, 16, of Carleton finished 3-4 in 19:18 and 19:19 respectively. Tracey Brumgard, 32, of Perryburg, Ohio, paced the women in 23:20, 37 seconds behind her husband, Andy Brumgard, also 32. “ It’s a unique and well-organized run,” she said. “They had plenty of lighting along the trail. It was well marked. The course had more hills than I’m used to.” “That’s the hardest I’ve ever seen Tracey run,” Andy Brumgard noted. “Maybe we should run in the dark more often.” Serenity Brain, 39, of Walled Lake finished second in 24:32. Novi Half Marathon
Mike, Mike and Vizslas Owners Lead Novi Way By Charles Douglas McEwen
NOVI (5/2/15) — It all came down to two guys named Mike at the Novi Half Marathon, presented by Kona Running Co. On Mile 11, Mike Blaszczyk, 22, of Novi slipped by Mike Andersen, 28, of Walled Lake, then hammered it to the finish line.
“He (Andersen) was ahead of me by 20 to 30 seconds early on,” said Blaszczyk, a Novi High School and University of St. Francis (Joliet, Ill.) graduate running his first race longer than 10K. “Then I reeled him in and opened a gap. “I took a cautious approach in the early miles as I didn’t want to crash and burn later,” he continued. “But I felt fresh and was rolling over the hills.” (The race, which started and ended at Novi Middle School, had a gently-rolling course, but no giant hills.) Blaszczyk, who works in race director Alan Whitehead’s Canton Road Runner Sports store, credited Whitehead for encouraging him to do the half marathon. He also praised Andersen for giving him plenty of competition. “Mike is a very talented runner,” Blaszczyk said. “Winning the Free Press Marathon — that’s amazing!” “He ran a hell of a race,” said Anderson of his rival. “When you pass someone, you’ve got to make them feel like they can’t come back on you. He did that. He ran smart from start to end.” Scott Smith, 22, of Warren was a distant third in 1:21:29. Dominic Nicita, 51, of Brighton paced the men’s masters in 1:31:31. Masters who own vizlas — a lean, energetic breed of dog — led the women.
DETROIT (5/2/15) — The race starting line is an amazing place. The different colors, nervous smiles, tapping toes against the chalk line and laces tied just right can take a runner’s breath away. Even better is when shoes are mini-shoes ... ones on kids. When most entrants are missing their two front teeth, grinning ear-to-ear and dressed in superhero costumes, you know it will be a great day to spectate.
Julie Maher of Grand Ledge finished the half marathon in 1:47:46. Smith timed 1:34:43 to Irvine’s 1:35:40. Schubring, 54, of Novi finished third in 1:36:01. “I love running with my vizslas even though I left them home today. They’re great running buddies,” the winner said. Irvine, who won the Wicked Halloween 5K last year running with Ripley, said she adores Kona Running races. “They’re well-organized and the people are awesome,” she said. “Alan (Whitehead) is very cool and I get to run with my dog. How wonderful is that?” Ryan Johns, 36, of White Lake (34:32) and Sabrina Redman, 38, of Wixom (42:54) won the 10K. Champs in the 5K were Chris Mikovich, 40, of Livonia (20:38) and Shantal Servello, 12, of Highland (24:11).
Heather Irvine, 46, of Ypsilanti paced the field for the first 12 miles running with her vizsla, Ripley. Jennifer Smith, 45, of Novi, who owns two vizslas but left them at home, passed Irvine there and continued to victory.
Johns finished second last year after leading for much of the race. “That stuck with me,” he said. “I’m a competitive guy. I don’t like to get snipped at the end like that.”
“With a couple miles to go, my running partner (Nancy Schubring) said, ‘Hey, you can catch the girl with the dog if you go now,’” said Smith. “I said OK and chased her down.”
The three races totaled close to 1,200 participants. For complete results, go to novihalfmarathon.com. - MR -

There’s a hush among Super Run entrants, then nervous giggles as the mini-us-es inch closer to go time. These heroes have villainous potholes to leap, bolders to bound over. “Up, up and away!” the announcer shouts. Capes become streams of color as kids take off on their Super Run quest to raise funds for Lutheran Social Services of Michigan. The kids run with all they’ve got. No chip can measure that kind of pace. They run with light, happy feet ... this next generation whose times we will covet, stories we will read and places they visit we will only dream of. Our heroes who will save the world because they learned young you don’t finish without first toeing the starting line. They will sweat, breathe harder than they thought they could ... and will be OK. They run because someone ran miles beside them, believed in them and now they believe in themselves. That’s how you save the world, one race at a time, one kid at a time ... Ready, set, fly! - MR -

Flirt with Dirt, Novi
Flirt With Dirt Premieres Dirty Duo By Tracey Cohen NOVI (6/6/15) — “This race hands you your a**!” said Dawn Chatman about the switchbacks, hills, rocks and roots on the 10K course, giving her “nothing left” for the final hill climb to the finish. “But that’s what you like feeling.” Close to 600 like-minded warriors, many repeat offenders, joined her for another Flirt With Dirt sellout under mostly-sunny skies, temperatures flirting with 60°. For many, one go-round was not enough.
© Carter Sherline / Frog Prince Studios
The first-year Flirt With Dirt Dirty Duo challenged entrants to run the 5K in 45 minutes or less, then double the distance. Jordan Desilets answered and crushed it, commanding the 5K and 10K fields in 19:59 and 39:38 respectively. On the women’s side, Amanda Leone (21:55) dominated the 5K, while Kelly Valente (48:45) lit things up in the 10K. Refreshments, tech shirts and age-group awards were bestowed on all race participants. One-of-a-kind pint glasses and bragging rights were reserved for Dirty Duo finishers. Bayshore Marathon, Traverse City
Bayshore Races Delight First-Timers, Vets Alike By Tom Henderson It was hillier than I expected and breezy, but there was so much too look at to keep your mind off things.
TRAVERSE CITY (5/23/15) — Jenn Cornell, a free-lance writer in Tecumseh, is exactly the kind of runner Bayshore Marathon organizers are looking to sign up.
“I don’t like to show up to races too early, because it makes me nervous,” she said. “So I got there just as they were playing the National Anthem. I didn’t have time to digest what was happening or get nervous.” Suddenly, they were off. Cornell’s goal was 4:30. At the turnaround, she was at 2:20, so she knew she could throw that goal into the bay. But it hardly mattered. “I felt awesome the whole way,” she said. “The course was beautiful. 20

At age 39 and something of a fitness buff, Cornell wanted to finally run her first marathon somewhere special. Somewhere she’d never run before. She thought Traverse City would fit the bill. And, she said with a smile, it did.
“All those water views were great. It was like, `Omigod, is that a $1 million Jen Cornell house? A $5 million house?’ People were so friendly, cheering and offering water. They even had beer out. It was all |

beautiful,” she said. The day’s series of races all end with nearly a full loop of the Northwest Michigan College running track. As she turned right onto the track grounds and could see the finish line, “I was euphoric,” she said. “I was so excited. It was, `I’m going to finish this! I’m going to finish a marathon!’” Which she did in 4:49:24 “I even felt great afterward,” Cornell went on. “I kept waiting all day for the other shoe to drop. I had a beer after the race. I went out with my girlfriends and had a giant hamburger. It was so nice to be in Traverse City. There’s so much to do.” She felt so great that having promised herself she’d never do another marathon during the dog days of training, she signed up the next day to do the Grand Rapids Marathon in the fall.
Joey Purpura, 27, who drove north from Granville, Ohio, won $1,000 as the men’s champion of the 33rd annual Bayshore Marathon in 2:24:54.
Clampetts headed for when they struck oil) won handily, finishing in 1:07:41, with Alex Russeau, 26, from Dundee second in 1:08:44.
Drove north too fast, it turned out. Purpura picked up a speeding ticket along the way, which gave him an immediate use for his race proceeds.
Austin Granger, 20, of Mishawaka, Ind., had been battling injuries for four months, including two foot fractures and a muscle tear. That didn’t stop him from winning the men’s 10K in 33:31, with Eli Jenkinson, 20, of Owosso finishing in 34:58 and Dave Bussard third in 35:04.
He ran with Adam Izer for the first half, then found another gear for the return trip on the outand-back course along the east arm of Grand Traverse Bay. Izer, 25, a native of Hungary, held off a finishing rush by Traverse City native Geoff Burns to finish second in 2:25:48 and collect $750. Burns, 25, came in four seconds later and won $250 in his first marathon.
10K for the second time in three years, setting a PR of 39:03. Linda Goss, 28, of Traverse City was second in 40:30, with Katelyn Duffing, 13, of Traverse City third in 41:23. Goss led early but when Doherty caught her and put in a surge to take the lead, Goss — using the race as a tune-up for June’s Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minn. — was content to let her go.

Nicole Michmerhuizen’s win in the women’s marathon can be summed up this way: No fair! The 22-year-old was a Division III All-American running at Calvin College and won Bayshore in her debut marathon, finishing in 2:49:21. Next came Serena Kessler, 43, of Ann Arbor in 2:53:40 and Karrie HamstraWright, 38, of Chicago in 2:3:49. Not only was it no fair for Michmerhuizen, a native, to win her marathon, taking the lead at six miles and pulling away, she is not a fulltime runner any longer. She is now in a graduate pharmacology program at the University of Michigan, where in April she won a graduate research fellowship from the National Science Foundation. Adrian Neal, a 32-yearold Traverse City native now living in Colorado Springs, won the women’s halfmarathon and $750 over runner-up and fellow TC native Caitlin Smith, 34. Neal ran 1:21:29, taking the lead at three miles and never looking back. Smith finished in 1:23:24 and won $500, with Lauren Macvicar, 32, of Traverse City third in 1:24:14 and winning $250. Smith’s boyfriend, Sam Robinson, 30, of Oakland, Calif., was third in the men’s half, finishing in 1:10:04. Running Saved My Soul By Tracey Cohen fortable to keep my running private and solitary, my passion for it and desire to connect with family, friends and people from all walks of life continues to fuel my efforts no matter how often I fall. Like running endurance, my tolerance for social interaction has improved, though we all know despite our dedicated training, some days our legs are dead, wind is null and speed seems a thing of the past.

My early years at the races could best be defined as parallel play. I ran hard and was grateful and challenged enough just to be in the presence of others, sometimes going as far as to exchange a friendly nod or spoken greeting. Exhaustion and fear of the unintentional snafu always follows, but slowly and surely I have been blessed with the kindness and friendship of many willing to overlook my blunders and accept my limitations even if perplexed and, much to my fear, hurt or offended, which is never my intention.

Our rendezvous were brief and sporadic but how I cherished our time away from the noisy, chaotic, unfamiliar masses, a catastrophic environment for any person on the autistic spectrum. Simple and silent, one foot in front of the other, my newfound friend provided pure bliss no matter the burning in my lungs those very first outings. Eventually released, Asperger syndrome still undetected, my running passion accompanied me and has never left my side. Though it was nearly 20 years before I knew such a syndrome existed and even more before I was diagnosed, running became my “better half ” and “in” to improved understanding and functioning in a social world requiring skills left out of my innate makeup. After cross country and track in high school, my running flourished during my collegiate years and beyond as I became a familiar-if-quirky face within the running and racing community. Case in point: I will forever remember the lovely, loving presence and gestures of Dolores Hensley, super volunteer and fixture of our running community, lost in body but not spirit nearly four years ago. Big smiles and kisses were her standard for every runner to cross the line, though much to my dismay, inconsistent sensory issues and meager social capacity all too often produced an involuntary reaction that was ornery and stiff, no matter my desire. But Dolores never desisted; she accepted my explanations, willingly and graciously including me in her welcoming, loving gestures. While I am grateful for all my good fortune, I must wonder how different my journey might have been had information been available when I was just a young girl. It is for this reason I have written my first book, “Six Word Lessons on Female Asperger Syndrome.” Concise and to the point, I endeavor to teach anyone willing to learn what it means to be born on the autistic spectrum, little-known differences between males and females, coping strategies and more. Knowledge is a powerful gift, and it is my intention to raise as much awareness as possible to help those on the spectrum gain essential resources and avoid some of the pitfalls of my past. Kalamazoo Marathon
What’s in a Word? At K-zoo, More/Less Than You’d Think By Scott Sullivan

Other translations include “mirage” and “stones seen in the water from which reflection looks like otters.” The latter made the most sense to me as I surveyed the record field for this year’s runs, which five years ago added the Kalamazoo Marathon to their lineup.

The translations to “boiling water” — Kalamazoo is a city and river that runs through it — spring from this legend. It works, too, for a story about the 36th annual Borgess Runs for the Health of It and men who should know better than to bring their brides to a boil. Not that we won’t anyway.

The best guess is it’s an Indian word involving a Potawatomi named Fleet Foot. To win his bride, he ran from the settlement to a point in the river and back before the water heating in a pot boiled away.

Brian Diemer Family of Races, Cutlerville
Search for Signs Continues at Diemer Run By Scott Sullivan
CUTLERVILLE (6/13/15) — What is it with you humans? I go to a fight and a hockey game breaks out. I go to a run and a son hands his dad a wig and electric guitar, then has him start racers by playing tapes of heavy-metal music. Happy Father’s Day, Everett Diemer, age 83.
But wait, there was more:
Then things got really weird. Dr. Robert Shaffer, 62, placed seventh in his age group and attributed his success to courtesans. At least that’s what I heard him say.

My search for signs of intelligent life took an odd turn at the 26th annual Brian Diemer Family of Races. Fast runners came from everywhere, drawn by its $8,250 prize purse.

Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K
Cleveland Rocks with 38th Annual Rite Aid Marathon By Scott Sullivan
CLEVELAND (5/17/15) — Abraham Chelanga of Kenya and Tatiana Arysova of Russia overcame humid, rainy weather to win the 38th annual Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon.
The 5K Saturday drew about 1,200 runners and walkers, many raising funds for a charity of their choice. Close to 1,000 children ages 12 and under took part in the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Red Nose Children’s Run at Edgewater Park that day
Chelanga, who led the entire race, turned in 5-minute miles and was on course-record pace halfway, before the moisture and heat got to him. He dropped to a 5:25-minute clip at miles 19 and 20, then to 6:40 the last two miles. Still, he won handily in 2:16:20.
Dave Woodward of Rocky River, Ohio, claimed the men’s 5K in 16:31. Haley Cassie, 10, of Alliston, Ontario, topped the women in 19:50.
Next came 2014 winner Philip Lagat of Kenya in 2:19:41 and Christopher Estwanik of Bermuda in 2:21:33.
The 2015 finish line area — which featured live music, a beer garden sponsored by and offering Great Lakes Brewing Co. beer, a Tito’s Vodka tent and retro trailer, food vendors and sponsor and charity booths — was packed with family and friends of runners through the end of the event.
For the women, Arysova (2:35:48) was followed by Dehininet Jara of Kenya (2:39:38) and Hiyut Guangul of Ethiopia (2:41:36). Chelanga and Arysova earned $3,000 for their wins, plus collected $3,000 bonuses for finishing under 2:20 and 2:40, respectively.
“This course showcases the best and brightest spots in Cleveland and helps put the city in a great light for the thousands of runners who come,” said Staph. “That’s very important to our staff.
The event included a 10K and half marathon, both also on Sunday, plus a 5K and kids run Saturday, May 16. Walking divisions were offered in all race distances. With tens of thousands of people heading downtown for the Health & Fitness Expo and races, more than $18 million was pumped into the Cleveland economy during the three-day event.
Race officials raised the yellow flag a little more than an hour into the race due to humid conditions. “Despite the humidity, our winners turned in solid performances today, capitalizing on the flat, fast course,” Staph said. “Both marathon winners claimed time bonuses and we saw solid performances in our half marathon and 10K as well.
Tatiana Arysova of Russa leads women in the Rite Aid Cleveland marathon.
“We’re proud that the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon continues to attract elite runners from the United States and around the world,” he said. International runners dominated the 10K, led by Najim El-Qady of Morocco (29:08) and Ann Wanjuri of Kenya (33:00). On the men’s side, Kenyans Julius Koskei finished second with in 29:11 and Amos Sang third in 29:12. Kenyan Monicah Ngige was the women’s runner-up in 33:08, fol26
The Cleveland Marathon was named “one of the top 13 fastest courses in the U.S” in 2015 by Running.About.com. It was labeled “one of the 14 best marathons to do in 2014” by Active.com, “1 of the 15 best spring marathons” by The Daily Burn and “A Top Marathon Worth Travelling For” by TripAdvisor’s FlipKey.com
“We are thrilled with the outcome of our 38th annual event,” executive race director Jack Staph said. “Despite early rainstorms, our city’s residents came out in full force to cheer on the thousands of runners visiting the city. Many runners commented on the great support they felt from our residents.”
“Additionally, I tip my hat to the race day operations staff, volunteers and medical crew for orchestrating a smooth and runner-friendly ‘Cleveland Experience’ for our athletes.”

Grizzly Man Ann Arbor Triathlon, Pinckney
Grizzly Men, Women Survive, Thrive on Wild Course By Charles Douglas McEwen Melissa Marowelli, 36, of Saline defended her women’s minitriathlon title in 1:20:16, edging Audrey Wu, 45, who finished in 1:21:02. “It’s a nice, clean swim,” Marowelli said. “The bike and the trail run are difficult but well-marked. Epic always has a lot of good volunteers.”
PINCKNEY (6/7/15) — They held their own in the swim, surged through the bike, then put the hammer down during run. In the end, Roman Krzyzanowski and Jill Allardyce won the sprint triathlon at the Grizzly Man Ann Arbor Triathlon, presented by Grizzly Peak Brewing Co. and coordinated by Epic Races.
Krzyzanowski, who competes for Motor City Endurance, and Allardyce, a Team ATP member, approached the triathlon in a like fashion. Both had competitors in front of them when they came out of the water, then picked off rivals one by one during the 14-mile bike. By the start of the 5-mile run, both had leads

The race started and finished at Pinckney Recreation Area, with the swim in Half Moon Lake, bike on paved roads and run mostly on the Potawatomi Trail. “That course is challenging,” said Krzyzanowski, 44, of Plymouth. “Running those undulating trails, especially: you’ve got to speed up, slow down, speed up … Some of the climbs are really long. It’s a great trail, but it’s tough.”
Winning the duathlon — which consisted of a 2-mile trail run, 14-mile bike and 5-mile trail run — were Robert Miller, 41, of Saginaw in 1:25:14 and Gretchen Thomas, 49, of Milford in 1:45:43. “I’m happy to be done,” said Thomas. “But it was great.” “I won this last year,” noted Miller, “and I love running the trails. But I wiped out today. I hit a root and tumbled. It shocked me for a second, but I brushed it off and kept going.” Champions in the aquabike — an 800-meter swim and 14-mile bike — were Robert Headley, 39, in 1:00:56 and Tracy Berman, 31, in 1:04:09. The race had about 260 entrants, up significantly from last year. “It was flawless,” said race director Eva Solomon. “Beautiful from start to end. Lots of compliments … perfect weather.” For complete results, go to http://epicraces.com.
Matt West won the mini-triathlon.

From there, Krzyzanowski paced the men in 1:23:17. Shawn Jyawook, 41, of Ann Arbor finished second in 1:26:25.) Allardyce, 38, of Saginaw, had to battle into the final mile. “Two girls were right on my tail,” she said. “I was praying the last mile would be a (paved) road — and it was. So when I got off the trail, I just kicked it into gear. “I can get lost easily in races, but not today,” she went on. “They had so many volunteers, there was no chance of it. This was one of my favorite races.” Allardyce finished in 1:39:17, followed by Rachel Jones, 45, of Novi in 1:40:07. It was Allardyce’s first triathlon win. Krzyzanowski has won many. “Roman is a formidable competitor,” said Matt West of Willis. “He’s always a step or two ahead — figuratively and literally. He and Brian Francis are my role models in this sport. They’re both in their 40’s and just keep winning.” West, who just turned 40, won the minitriathlon — which consisted of a 400-meter swim, 14-mile bike and 2-mile trail run — in 1:02:56. Samuel Jyawook, 15, of Ann Arbor finished second in 1:05:00. “Seeing I was injured all winter, this is a nice surprise,” West said. “I definitely felt like a grizzly man on that trail,” he continued. “The course is awesome — up and down, left and right … I loved it and the bike course too. I’ll definitely be back next year.” michiganrunner.net

He hurt himself during winter on Ypsilanti’s snowy roads. In mid-March he saw a doctor who “told me to take an obscene amount of time off. I took about a week off,” Rayyan said. He finished second overall here last year in 2:38:32 and said he just couldn’t miss it this year. “It’s a small-town marathon but a huge marathon,” Rayyan said.

“I was just aiming to finish,” Rayyan, 25, of Ypsilanti said.

DEARBORN (4/18/15) — Naseem Rayyan entered the Martian Marathon still recovering from a broken bone in his foot. Though he felt pain from the injury, especially toward the end, he still won in 2:41.31.
The half marathon is invaded by “Martian” Bruce Mchaney.
“At first it was fine,” he went on. “Then I went up a hill and stepped on it wrong. It hurt after that.” Rayyan shared the lead with Steven Lawrence, 37, of Franklin for the first 15 miles. Lawrence then surged ahead, but slowed down between miles 22 and 23. The winner passed him around the 23-mile mark and continued to victory. Lawrence placed second in 2:42:27, followed by Gray Skinner, 30, of Austin, Texas, in 2:46:27. Craig Dolecki, 41, of Westland paced the masters in 2:50:38. Two more Austin, Texas, runners led the women. Nora Colligan, 32, topped her Team Rogue teammate Amy Baker, 31, 2:53:35 to 2:54:44. Kelsey Bragg, 25, of Fenton finished third in 3:07:49, followed by masters queen Lisa Veneziano, 50, also of Fenton, in 3:11:09. Jay Connors, 38, of Saline (17:45) and Valerie Barthelemy, 23, of Ann Arbor (17:57) won the 5K. Evan Gaynor, 26, of Perryburg, Ohio (30:54) and Sarah Boyle, 28, of Brighton captured the Meteor 10K. Jay Hudson, 35, of Oak Park (1:19:30) and Caitlin Rietsema, 21, of Rockford (1:28:40) triumphed in the half marathon. Hudson, a host for 89X-FM radio, came to the race with his fellow host and fiancee, Sara Jean. “It was hard to adjust to the warmer weather after a long winter,” he said. “But it’s my first win ever! “Not bad for a radio guy,” he said.
A fast field for the aptly-named “Meteor 10K” starts the race. Men’s winner Evan Gaynor wears bib no. 5. DEARBORN (4/18/15) — Sarah Boyle defended her Meteor 10K title and Evan Gaynor won for the second time in the last three years at the Martian Invasion of Races. Both went home withe $500 in prize money. Boyle, 28, of Brighton, seems to go faster each time she runs this race. In 2013 she finished second to Dot McMahan in 35:36. Last year she won in 35:23. This year she broker her 35:00 10K personal record, blazing a 33:46. “I was thinking I could do it,” Boyle said of her effort. “But this is my first road race of the year, so I didn’t know what to expect.” Allison Macsas, 30, of Austin, Texas, pushed Boyle during the early going. “She led the first two miles,” Boyle said. “Then she was right behind me the next two miles.” Macsas fell off to take second in 34:08. “This is my first 10K in four years. I’m happy with it,” she said. Erin Webster, 29, of Dearborn finished third in 36:34. Next came masters champ Serena Kessler, 43, of Ann Arbor in 38:16. Gaynor, 28, of Perrysburg, Ohio, finished second here in 2012 and won the next year. He waited until midway before taking command this year. “I wanted to wait until the 5K, then really throw it down,” he said. “I threw in a large surge then and no one went with me.” Gaynor finished in 30:54. Next came Matt Brooker, 24, of Yellow Springs, Ohio, in 31:18 and Tony Filipek, 27, of Rochester in 31:27. Eric Green, 46, of Pontiac led the masters in 34:59. The Best of Ourselves By Jason Elmore
I
find myself in a stage of life akin to miles 5 and 6 on the back side of Cadillac’s Lake Mitchell. Halfway around, quieter, slower-paced. Just trying to run steady and relaxed.
It’s not the age, it’s the miles. I’ve had all the chronic injuries that come with three decades of distance running. I have also gone through withdrawal and depression when I could not run. I’ve repeatedly snuck out too soon for a run, only to worsen whichever muscle, facia, tendon, spur or other ailment that was my enemy at the time. A year ago, when I returned from a year’s deployment to Kuwait, my body hurt. With little else to do when off duty in the desert, I ran myself and hips into the ground. “You have to know the difference between pain and injury. You can run through pain,” a coach once told me. The problem is pain is normally a sign of injury. Regardless, I tried to run through pain until I couldn’t, so when I came home I had injuries to go with the miles. The more I tracked my splits,

Jason Elmore poses with son Zachary and wife Alicia. trained, focused and pushed, the more I got hurt. In so doing, I lost sight of the value and friendship I had with running. My priorities these days have names and faces. Running, biking and swimming have assumed new roles. They cannot be burning passions any longer, but neither can I let them go as friends. They help me find solace, relieve stress and stay healthy physically and mentally. While I adjust my relationship with running, I become more aware of others who talk about personal records. When asked about my PRs, I say I don’t have a watch nor remember my last race time on bike, in the pool or on the road. Askers seem to give me a look of judgment. So, I wonder, what role does a PR play for various runners and why does anyone do it or another discipline. First, consider my teenage son Zachary. Parental influence took hold finally last spring. For him, running is all new, fresh and challenging. He finds freedom on runs taking him miles from home, through wooded trails, along the lake and on his own. He is finding himself in his mind as his feels new muscles, the surging with young fresh blood, and taste of fresh air in pink lungs through an untainted, growing body. At every track or cross country meet, 5K or even training run, Zachary not only has the potential to improve, he almost always does. He feels a developing excitement as he gets faster and stronger with nearly every challenge. He feels limitless as he looks toward an unknown future full of positive potential and PRs.

Running’s role has changed in my mid-40s. Its aches and pains have become old friends. I am no longer out to win races. I don’t do fartleks, track splits or own a running watch any longer. I just lace up, head out and hope for a good run.
roads, mixed with walk and rests. She pressed hard against the years and health choices. While her system had spits and sputters, she looked forward to the uphills and to going down the road with growing energy.
Michigan Runner - July/ August 2015
Second, consider my cousin Paula. A few years my elder, she has only recently caught the bug. As the two of us grew up on family Christmas tree farms, I always saw Paula as a hard worker, able to put most men to shame. Two years ago — by then a former smoker who was also a wife, mother of grown daughters and overweight — Paula realized she needed a change in lifestyle. Encouraged by her daughter Lacey, a physical trainer, she laced up and began to run. Paula started slow, shuffling down country |
michiganrunner.tv
Each pound she shed was an achievement. Each outing meant more running and less walking. Each week she made it to another tree, mailbox, mile and race.
Paula now incorporates pickups, tempo changes, hills and longer runs each week. With age-group awards and PRs, she has goals to yet surpass. My wife Alicia had run in the junior Pan American Games, set records, won MIAA awards, was an NCAA All-American and fell seconds shy from making the Olympic trials. These days, as she juggles being a physician, mother, wife and everything else, she has adapted better to running’s role than I have. She squeaks out a few miles here and there, some on treadmills, some just down the road with our dog, Jazz, at her side. Today, for Alicia, there is no need for podiums. She has nothing to prove to anyone or, more importantly, to herself. She runs to release the stress of a day carrying burdens of her patients, kids and husband. It’s time alone in silence. She is not likely to run another 4:30 mile or 17:00 5K, but doesn’t care. While others her age jam in weekend races, she only does the occasional 5K while pushing a stroller or helping one of our children. Each of us is at a different stage of life and relationship with running. For Alicia and me, the PRs are gone, recorded in scrapbooks collecting dust in the attic. For others, the PRs — be they in the form of pounds lost, a new lifestyle or age-group awards — are still there to gather. For Zachary, the PRs are limitless and untold. Running is not like team sports wherein points and competition are involved in each game. It’s a lifestyle. There are external and internal challenges that take place on or off the race course that evolve as the years and miles tick away. The reasons to lace up and head out still live inside the runner. It’s not the PR that drives us. It’s achieving our PB — our Personal Best, the best of ourselves. - MR -

Killer B’s Baade and Bragg Bag Let’s Move Marathon By Charles Douglas McEwen 1:36:21. Patti Ramos, 27, took third in 1:37:01. Stephanie McMall, 33, of Auburn ended Rachel Walny’s 4-year winning streak in the women’s 5K, prevailing in 22:02. Scott Moore, 31, of Royal Oak, repeated as men’s champ in 18:39.

Wha’d You Say topped the men’s half marathon relay teams in 1:42:00. Flash 1 and Flash 2 paced women’s teams in 1:50:23, while Better Half was the coed champ in 1:54:05. Altogether, Let’s Move had more than 2,300 entrants, The event, inspired by the national Let’s Move campaign to fight childhood obesity, donated proceeds to Macomb County civic and philanthropic groups that support healthy living education and physical fitness. For complete race results, go to http://letsmovefestival.com.
Nora Bikos, (bib 796) paces the 2:00 half marathoners while Jennifer Bruns checks her watch. Both finished in 2:00:19. MT. CLEMENS (4/25/15) — The eighth annual McLaren Let’s Move Festival of Races introduced a marathon to go along with its 5K, half marathon, relay, kids run and health and fitness expo. “It was awesome,” said men’s winner Greg Baade, 25, of Chesterfield Township. “It was cool to win the first-ever marathon here. I don’t live far from here, so it’s kind of like a hometown race.” Baade, who attended Warren De La Salle High School and Saginaw Valley State University, jumped out to an early lead and had the race, which consisted of two half-marathon loops, all to himself. “The first loop was easy,” he said. “I kind of hit a wall halfway through the second one and was struggling. But I ended up pretty well.” Baade ran the Detroit Free Press Marathon, his debut at that distance, in 3:12 last year. His 2:55:16 here easily eclipsed that. Second overall was women’s champ Kelsey Bragg, 25, of Fenton in 3:02:39. Derek Dexter, 46, was the second male and top masters runner in 3:05:18. Juan Roca, 37, took third in 3:05:37. Bragg finished nearly half an hour ahead of women’s runner-up Meredith Hackett, 31, who timed 3:28:22. Eleonore Ellero, 45, topped the

masters women and third overall in 3:38:30. Bragg, who had run 3:07:39 at the Martian Marathon the previous weekend, was surprised to win here. “I went into this (marathon) more relaxed than usual,” she told Jennie McCafferty of Michigan Runner TV. “I just wanted to see if I could do back-to-back weekends. “The weather was perfect. It was a great course for me,” Bragg said. The half marathon featured a battle between twins Jordan and Josh Eccelston. During the early going the 24-year-olds, who were teammates of Baade at Warren De La Salle, shared leadership with Scott Smith, 22 of Warren. “My brother picked it up around halfway and took off,” Jordan Eccelston said. “Oh, are we going for it now?” I thought. The twins dropped Smith and fought it out from there. “Josh started pulling away from me again with about three miles to go,” said Jordan. “A half mile later he came back to me and said he was getting a cramp. I said, ‘Yeah, me too,’ but thought, ‘I’m going for it now!’” Jordan won in 1:15:50, followed by Josh in 1:16:08. Smith placed third in 1:19:13. Lilian Steuben, a 28-year-old newlywed whose husband, Cory, won this race in 2012, claimed the women’s half marathon in 1:36:10. Close behind was masters champ Heather Lewandowski, 40, of Chesterfield in michiganrunner.net

Mom, 42, Launches 466.5-Mile Cancer Quest By Ron Marinucci
M
ichigan runner Davina McNaney planned to run 466.5 miles from Pinckney to Point Sodus, N.Y., a resort town on Lake Ontario, starting June 19. She wants RunMI2NY to celebrate her defeat of breast cancer and raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Courtesy of Davina McNaney
McNaney and husband Steve were both raised in Sodus Point. “My greatgrandmother lived there and my grandmother was born there,” she said. “It’s a beautiful little resort town, a beach community that will always be my home, wherever I happen to live.”
“I was always athletic,” said McNaney, “but enjoyed team sports. I started running at age 30 for the American Stroke Association Team in Training.” She ran her first marathon in Buffalo, N.Y., to honor her grandmother who had died after a series of strokes. “My love of running never subsided. I caught the running bug!” she said.
The couple’s Davina McNaney daughters Sasha, 7, and Nadia, 4, “will stay with their grandparents (in Sodus Point) while I run RunMI2NY,” she said. Once the idea for RunMI2NY was hatched, deciding the route was easy.
When she turned 40 McNaney ran 40 miles, raising more than $4,000 for a local food bank. She also directed the Run for the Gold 5K and kids run in downtown Pinckney, which garnered several thousand dollars for community children’s programs. Having a masters degree in school psychology and 15 years of work in children’s mental health, the latter event was a natural.
“We’ve driven it often to go home,” she said. “I couldn’t take the shortcut through Canada. It felt right to go through the U.S. cities and visit cool places along the way.”
Soon after turning 40, McNaney took her first mammogram. Two months later, in December 2012, she learned she had breast cancer. Her family had a history with the disease. After testing negative for carrying the breast cancer gene, she underwent a double mastectomy with reconstructive surgery three months later.
“Team Steve” offered support on the run. “He’s been behind me and I’m thankful,” McNaney said. “He will follow with the crew van and his bike.” They picked the 14-day June-to-July dates because Sasha and Nadja are out of school. “I chose to end July 3 because Sodus Point will be very busy with July 4 festivities,” she continued.
“The recovery was difficult,” McNaney admitted, but she finished the Pinckney Memorial Day 5K less than four months later. “It felt wonderful to be myself again,” she said. “It bothered me to have people think of me as a victim,” she continued. “I’ve always been strong, so this (running) was the best way for me to share. I want to celebrate being healthy and strong, support research that helped me get better and inspire others to make it happen.
“Many people will be in town, which will let me see lots of friends and family when I finish.” McNaney hoped to start running each day at dawn, “to get cooler temperatures.” She planned to average 33 miles a day. “If I can load on a few more miles per day early, I will,” she said.
“Go big or go home, I guess.”
Steve will be within a mile or two of her most of
the time to provide fuel and fluids. She hopes to complete each day’s run within eight hours, including breaks. “It’s good to have a plan,” she said, “but it’s also good to realize that plan might go out the window. I’m open to splitting morning and evening runs if the temperatures get too high.” During the long runs, McNaney plans to focus on recovery, staying on course and hydration. “I’ll walk when I need to and stop to change shoes and socks a couple of times,” she added. “I’ll prepare for things that could go wrong, but won’t dwell on them.” Although “lots of people” will begin in Pinckney with her, much of the time she will run alone. She and Steve have “contacted running clubs along the route, so I might get some company.” And with a Facebook event for the finish-line party, “lots of people will run with me then,” she said. They planned to stay overnight in hotels near their stake-out point for the next day. “I will really look forward to a hot shower and a nice bed each night,” she said. McNaney averaged running 30 to 80 miles a week to prepare for her adventure, using a treadmill “during the crazy weather” of winter and spring in Michigan. She recently ran three marathons and a 50K in a nine-day period. “It helped me test gear, work on recovery and try new foods during the runs,” she said. “I’m a 42-year-old, stay-at-home mom of two whose family always comes first,” she went on. “I have to find time to train and not interfere with important things such as dinner time and brushing teeth. I hope that, along the way, I can inspire others to go for whatever they might dream up.” For more information about McNaney’s quest and/or to make a donation, visit RUNMI2NY.com. - MR -
Back to the Beach, Washington Twp. By Charles Douglas McEwen
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP (5/17/15) — For her first half marathon, Alexandria Vintevoghel, 24, of Casco chose the constantly-undulating, often-grueling trails at the fifth annual Stony Creek Back to the Beach Half Marathon. It worked out well for her. Beforehand the recent Kent State University graduate had gone only as far as 10K in a race. But she handled the dirt trails and steep hills at Stony Creek Metro Park like a pro, pacing the women and trailing only one male runner when she crossed the finish line. Just for good measure, Vintevoghel timed 1:29:25, which broke Sara Ropp’s 1:29:50 course record set last year. “The hills? I knew they were going to be there,” Vintevoghel said. “But it was still tougher than I expected.” Amber Dermyre, 25, of Canton, who won the women’s 10K here last year, finished runner-up in 1:34:25. Next came Heather Lewandowski, 41, of New Baltimore in 1:35:46.

Vintevoghel Sets Course Mark at Back to Beach Lamar Barber, 32, a former Detroit resident who now lives Iowa City, Iowa, ran away with the men’s half marathon, timing 1:24:54. “There are some nice, tough hills on this course,” he said. The winner drew inspiration from his father. “He died a long time ago, but his birthday was May 19,” Barber Alexandria said. “So, this (victory) is for him.” Lamar’s brother, LeaVintevoghel mon Barber, 35, of Detroit, finished seventh. “Once Lamar gets ahead, he puts the heat on and no one is going to catch him,” Leamon said. Daniel Parker, 24, of Shelby Township snagged second in 1:29:50. Sebastian Tochowicz, 41, of Ira took third in 1:30:52.

Joseph Kaiser, 48, of Rochester and Nicole Soules, 22, of Sterling Heights won the 10K. Kaiser (41:23) bested Earl Han, 30, of Rochester Hills (41:51) and Brian Vargo, 33, of Royal Oak (43:07). Soules won the women’s race in 50:44. Next came Laura Whitney, 32, of Berkley (52:48) and Susan Parker, 51, of Shelby Township (53:47). “It’s my first time winning overall, so I’m excited,” Soules said. Teenagers ruled the 5K, as Nicholas Hoffman, 18, of Chelsea (20:25) and Phoebe Varney, 16, of Lambertville (23:28) triumphed. Kevin Sherwood, 53, of Royal Oak (22:42) and Meghan Luzod, 26, of Royal Oak (23:51) were runners-up. The race benefited the Detroit Chapter of Medal4Mettle, trail-improvement projects and other charities. For complete results, go to http://backtothebeachraces.com. - MR -

amn it!
Perry Badia is dead, struck by a car while running on the campus of Oakland University May 14.
Tom Henderson
I first heard by email from my wife, who had got a news alert on her smart phone. A few minutes later I got an email from a writer buddy.
My wife remembered Perry, from before she and I were dating, as a really cute member of the group of runners and walkers who gather in downtown Detroit each Tuesday night. My writer buddy remembered him as an old friend she had gotten back into contact with a few months ago. She had found out her husband was cheating on her, got di-

vorced, was in need of a friend and shoulder to cry on and ran into Perry. He provided the shoulder and good advice. Suddenly he was dead .
I don’t profess to have known Perry well. I first met him at a party the downtown runners held after the Free Press marathon in 1988 or so. He was new to the group. I had seen him once or twice but didn’t know him at all. He asked how my marathon had gone. As usual I had faded late, missed my target time, ran probably something like 3:15. He asked about my training and picked my brain for advice, asking one question after another and was genuinely interested in what I had to say. I took him for a running newbie, enamored by his new group of marathon friends. Finally, I got around to asking him if he’d run today. Yep.
What time? I figured he’d tell me four hours, and that would be my platform to tell him about fartleks, track workouts and doing long runs on soft surfaces. Nope. He’d done something like 2:45. He was new to the group, but hardly new to the sport.
For years I’d run into Perry occasionally while running along Lake St. Clair in the Grosse Pointes, and at area races. He was friendly, genuinely interested in how you were doing and what you were up to. We never just nodded at each other. We always stopped and chatted.
I haven’t run much with the downtown runners for years, and almost all my racing is done up north now. I only saw Perry on rare occasions, yet his greeting was always effusive and genuine. It felt like a blow to the solar plexus to hear Perry was dead at age 54.
He was struck about 5 p.m. as he ran eastbound in the westbound lane of the perimeter road that circles the Oakland University campus. It is a congested two-lane road, with constant turns, rises and dips, that served as the course for many years of the old Max & Erma’s races the Motor City Striders put on. Perry was rushed to McLaren Oakland Hospital, then transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, where he died that night of blunt trauma injuries.
My job takes me to Oakland U. on occasion, to visit the technology incubator there. Whenever I see runners on that road, I wince. I always wonder, even facing traffic, why they trust those collegeaged drivers, half of them immersed in their cell phones as they go by. There are athletic fields at the school and lots of grassy pastures at the back end of the grounds, plenty of territory for soft-surface, non-dangerous running. That’s where my dog and I run when we are out there. Maybe Perry was looking for a smooth surface that day, maybe doing a fast workout and he didn’t want to worry about concentrating on footing.
I don’t mean to blame the dead here. But drivers can’t be trusted, especially in these days of constant texting and email checking. Running facing traffic isn’t much safer than running with your back to it.
Drugs and alcohol weren’t involved. Police said the 25-year-old driver might 44

have been blinded by the sun. As I write this, no charges have been filed.
Perry was buried in the Resurrection Cemetery in Shelby Township. “Perry was a great brother, son, father and friend,” his sister, Carol, wrote on Facebook. “He will be missed in our lives deeply.”
“We’ve been friends for like 32 years,” Michelle Topalian told the Oakland Post. She and her husband attended Michigan State with Perry and had remained close since. “We are devastated.” She said Perry loved to cook Italian food and was an avid fan of MSU sports.
Badia, who lived in Rochester, sold computer and software packages for a living. He is survived by two daughters, Ashlee, 15, and Sabrina, 12, who live with his ex-wife, Kristin. “He was a very, very good dad,” Topalian said. “He took them everywhere; he was at every soccer game.”

cott Hubbard and I traded a few emails several months ago after I wrote about Tony Mifsud. Two themes of our emails were our perplexity at how dramatically times had slowed in the younger age groupings — by younger, these days, I mean under 40 — and how much entry fees had risen, far faster than the cost of living. So here’s a shout out and huzzah to runmichigancheap.com, a creation of Frank Race Management, whose goal, says its website “is to create inexpensive quality opportunities for athletes of all abilities to challenge themselves and others. The Run Michigan Cheap series was created with that in mind.”
On May 2, the series came to Traverse City, with out-and-back courses along the bike path that runs along the Leelanau Peninsula; take your pick of a 5K, 10K or half-marathon. The dog would have been happy doing the 10K. Me? I had to take 10 weeks off this winter recovering from retinal surgery. Getting back into shape has been tough … well, more or less insurmountable. I keep plugging away, but, hey, let’s just do 5K and call it a day, eh?
Yet you can’t please everyone. Three older women had entered the 5K to walk it. As we stood in a queue awaiting the order to start, one started bitching, mad at the race director.
“I don’t like this,” she said to her friends. “He’s just in it for the money. The money’s not going to charity. It’s going to him.”
Uh, ma’am, you live in a capitalist society. If this dude can gather 100 of us, put on accurate races, give us all medals, feed and rehydrate us and make a profit after charging just $15, more power to him. Coincidentally, I was going to run a 10K in Kalkaska the next weekend. Until I got online and found out the entry fee was $50. Had I wanted to run the half-marathon, it would have cost me $70.
Forget it. I ran in the woods that day and raced Sunday, instead, in a Mother’s Day race in Hickory Hills in Traverse City, a charity event that cost $25. If you’re looking for a cheap race, go to runmichigancheap.com. The upcoming schedule: July 11: Spring Lake July 19: Muskegon July 25 Morning: Farwell July 25 Evening: Kalamazoo Aug. 1: Saginaw Aug. 15: Muskegon Aug. 22: Big Rapids Aug. 30: Battle Creek Sept. 5: Frankfort Sept. 12: Lake Orion Oct. 10: Ann Arbor Oct. 31: Reed City

Wanting a race that morning that allowed dogs, I did the Petoskey Stone Festival 5K in Eastport, at the tip of Torch Lake. The $10 entry fee included a great trail course, bananas and bagels after the run and a wonderful black t-shirt with the lower and upper peninsulas of Michigan looking like Petoskey stones. The race director was thrilled to have a record field of 56 for the third annual race. He hadn’t promoted it much, worried about congestion on the trail and asked our opinion on whether it could handle more.
It could, we all agreed. It was two loops mostly through forest, on wood chips, hard packed dirt and loose sand on rolling hills. Tough, delightful and cost-effective. I told him to get the race listed with MR next year. Then I shot over to the finish of the Bayshore races in Traverse City for a story elsewhere in this issue. The results confirmed what Scott Hubbard and I had talked about: the amazing slowing of runners. Of 1,358 runners in the 10K, 20 broke 40 minutes. That’s 1.4 percent of the field. Only one of 881 women broke 40 minutes. None of the 64 men in the 30-34 age group broke 41 minutes. Of 69 men ages 35-39, only one broke 40. Only one of 45 in 25-29 broke 40. This on a flat course, in low humidity, a perfect day for running fast. Were they all taking selfies as they plodded along? (Tech-disabled Baby Boomer on the attack!)
Naturally, they were done in by my younger Baby Boomer counterparts. Of 30 men in the 50-54 group, two broke 40. Another 30 ran in 55-59 and two broke 40. In the latter group, Dave Bussard ran 35:04, faster than anyone age 25-49. And Kevin Deyo ran 37:35, getting beat by just one runner aged 25-49.
~~
postscript: I emailed this to Scott Sullivan before Memorial Day so he could start on his work. That Saturday saw a couple things bearing directly on what I’d sent.
So two of 178 runners ages 25-39 managed to break 40 minutes. Four of 60 runners in their 50s did so. Not time, yet, to pass the torch, apparently. - MR -
For any of the races, pre-registration costs $15. Race-day was $25. If you registered online, you got a t-shirt too. All finishers got medals, there was plenty of bottled water and food at the finish line, and volunteers had been recruited to serve as marshals at all the places where the bike path crossed roads. It was a glorious day, the sun finally out to beam warmth earthward after a cold, cold spring.
