================= Quote of the Week ================= "You just can get out there and go for it with no pushing and shoving." -- Amy Mortimer, about running the Grand Blue Road Mile at Drake Relays ============================== Michigan Runner TV: 44th Annual Hillsdale "GINA" Relays ============================== Former Eastern Michigan coach, Bob Parks says it best: "Bill Lundberg's Hillsdale Gina Relays, has now developed into a very big, high quality meet." And so it is. We enjoy the open and invitational events with athletes from 8 states; 2 countries; 59 colleges, universities and community colleges; professional and amateur athletes from 23 clubs and teams; and some competing "unattached". Check out sprinter, hurdlers, runner, jumpers and throwers in more than a dozen shows: http://michiganrunner.tv/2010hillsdale/
Josh Kettlewell won the decathlon pole vault on his way to becoming Hillsdale “GINA Relays Decathlon Champion.
======================================== Paul Aufdemberge Sets US 10,000 meter record for Age Group 45-49 (Unofficial) ======================================== Five years ago, Hillsdale College alum, Paul Aufdemberge turned 40. With the kinds of times that put the Masters record for the 10,000 meter run within reach, Paul entered the 10,000 at the Hillsdale College "GINA" Relays. Home field advantage. He did it. Paul's 30:04.43 is now the US Masters Record for 10,000 meter run. "Relay" Fred Vanhala takes it from here: "I heard a little earlier this week that Paul was entered in the 10,000 at the Hillsdale Gina Relays on Friday. Now at age 45, he had a new record to go for; Pete Magill's 31:27.3 set in 2006. Paul is so good, I almost forgot to check the results...I knew he'd nab that record. He did, running a 31:14.21. Just another notch in the record book, five years after he set the masters record of 30:04.43." See Paul run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK48w8RmFpE

=========================== MRN On the Road - Hillsdale =========================== It was fun watching a number of Michigan's best road racers testing their talent on the track. -- Steve Menovcik ran his first outdoor 5,000 meter race in a fine 15:58, passing most of the college runners in his heat. See Steve run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHI_q4mOrhs -- Angela Matthews, competing for the Front Line Racing Team, finished 4th in the 3000m Steeplechase Invite in 10:39.39. Elizabeth Smit of Calvin College won that race in 10:29.55, bringing a huge smile to the face of her coach, Olympic Bronze medalist, Brian Diemer. See Angela run http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3XJdnNK4b4 -- We were a little surprised to see Notre Dame's Marissa Treece in the steeplechase, so we asked her after the race when she took up the steeple. "This week," she said. "I guess I'm a steepler now." With a fine 5th place 10:52.53, we expect to see more of Marissa in this very tough event. See Marissa run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3XJdnNK4b4 -- We always learn something when we have a chance to talk with meet officials. Friday evening we spoke with official Rob Buzaitis, who was on his way to check the weather. The issue was whether or not wet weather would force the pole vault and high jump events to be moved inside. Vaulters need dry conditions to grip the poles. Until recently, NCAA Division I would not accept qualifications from inside pole vault events. Now, however, all three NCAA Divisions operate according to the same rules. Watch the vaulters, high, dry, and inside, on Saturday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1nP9-MAwKw -- Oops! Several of us at the finish line during one of the 5000 meter sections Friday saw a Malone runner unleash a fierce kick, only to realize that he was still one lap short of the finish line. =================================== Road Runners CLub of America (RRCA) 52nd Convention, Lakeland, Florida by Gary Morgan, RRCA Michigan State Rep =================================== The annual RRCA Convention was held in Lakeland, Florida, home of the Detroit Tigers spring training camp, from April 21st to 25th. The 52nd edition of this convention was the gathering of the State Reps, running club members from around the country, and award winners from this year. We got Thursday going with a training session for state reps at a Nature park in Lakeland-- an appropiate site since it was Earth Day. The training session focused From left: Ellen Nitz, Ron Beasley, Bill Rodgers, Mitch Garner and Gary Morgan on getting Clubs involved with putting on Championship races, using the Web site, and the participation of clubs in the running community. A meet-and-greet evening reception followed. Friday, there was club running college and a small expo at the Lakeland convention center. At the club running college there was sessions on promoting your event, getting sponsors, club newsletters, and nutrion
for runners. Pat Williams, Vice President of the Orlando Magic was the guest speaker for the luncheon. In the evening there was a festive occasion called the Swan races mimicking the Kentucky Derby on Mirror Lake. Lakeland is known for its Swans. People paddled swan boats accross the lake in a hat contest that some RRCA members particpated in. It was a blast. Saturday morning, the National RRCA 5K championship race was held. There was also a 10K and a 15k challenge. Keith Brantley, 1996 Olympic Marathoner, was the guest speaker at the luncheon. He talked about his career and gave some inspirational messages to the crowd. There was a a vote for the board of directors and Mitch Garner from the Ann Arbor Track Club retained his position as Central Region director. Congratulations, Mitch. At the Awards Banquet Bill Rodgers, four-time winner of the Boston and New York Marathons, was the guest speaker and he talked about how running has changed from his heyday and how people should stay active for life. Ron Beasley from the Ann Arbor Track Club got the Kurt Steiner Youth Development award for all his hard work with youg people from Ann Arbor and all over the state. Congratulations Ron. The Convention was a learning experience that incorporated running and having fun here in Lakeland, Florida. Come to next years RRCA convention in Fredricksberg, Virginia. Keep on running. ======================================================================== E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness: Are Runners Smarter? ======================================================================== Ha, I got your attention and yes of course we are! Research linking optimal brain function to exercise continues to mount. More importantly, exercise that is aerobic in nature like running, biking, hiking, aerobics classes, and swimming shows greater improvement in stimulating brain activity than stretching, toning and weight lifting. According to Henrietta van Praag, PHD, a lead investigator at the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institute of Aging, activities such as strength training don’t activate the brain in the same way and may be more restricted to the muscle itself. However, don’t underscore the importance of strength training, Pilates or yoga. Strong muscles and flexibility are critical requirements for independence and mobility as we age. Aerobic activity has been shown to improve cognitive function in the areas of learning, memory and multitasking. While this research is still in its early stages, the results have been consistent throughout the life span, regardless of age. Furthermore, the type of activity does matter! Positive growth in cognitive function occurs only when the blood gets pumping. Children who have higher fitness levels score higher on standardized achievement tests, particularly math and reading. Older adults show a 39% reduction in developing cognitive impairment such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. Some research even suggests that women have a greater cognitive response to exercise then men, who am I to dispute science? ============================================== Dick Patrick: Track Media Coverage Must Evolve ============================================== We were very sad when we learned that one of our favorite writers, Dick Patrick, would no longer be writing for USA Today.
