================= Quote of the Week ================= "This year's race (Medtronic TC 1 Mile) will also feature a pair of $10,000 "Time Bounties," if the men's and women's champions better four minutes and 4:32, respectively." -- USA Track & Field News Release, 5/11/10 If you've ever wondered what the women's equivalent to a 4:00 minute mile would be, here's an answer. ============================================================================== Cleveland Adventure: Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, 1/2 Marathon & 10K, 5/16/10 ============================================================================== Really looking forward to being in Cleveland this weekend for the 33rd Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon. The money race here is the 10K; the marathon has prize money, too. A half marathon was added in 2005 and a 5K was added last year. Both the marathon and the half marathon are sold out, but this is a 10K worth traveling to. In fact a number of Michigan elites have picked up checks at this race. Many of the international runners will also be running the Crim 10 Mile. Cleveland is waterfront, MetroParks, Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, imposing architecture, great trendy restaurants and a terrific post-race party with a rock concert and a beer garden. Come back in the summer and take the boat tour (school groups own it during May). Congratulations to Race Director, Kristin Aidiff; Elite Athlete Coordinator, Greg Meyer; title sponsor, Fifth Third Bank; and all the staff, sponsors and volunteers who put on a hugely successful Fifth Third River Bank Run on Saturday. 21,000 runners and walkers participated in the largest gathering for the event in its 33 year history. The addition of the 10K distance two years ago continues to be popular and this race uses all the communications tricks in the Internet to connect participants with the race: Twitter, Facebook, blogs and email newsletters. So many cool things about the Fifth Third River Bank Run: USA 25K National Championship gathers national runners and masters runners at the top of their game, including Michiganders Katie McGregor, Stephan Shay, Nick Stanko, Paul Aufdemberge, Marybeth Reader, Dot McMahan, Doug Goodhue. Jason Hartmann comes to his hometown race from his digs in Colorado and successfully defends his 4th place finish. 25K distance requires significant strategy to win. Many are doing the USA Running Circuit series.
The sky spit a little drizzle and blew some breezes, but many runners said the wind didn't bother them. In addition to all the fun generated by the race, there is much to enjoy in Grand Rapids. We were enlightened and delighted by many exhibits in the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Friday night on race weekend is also prom night for many local schools. Young women in gorgeous gowns with handsome dates show up in restaurants all over downtown. One prom goes to the Grand Rapids Public Museum and they ride the merry-go-round in the museum. How romantic is that? You can see the merry-goround from across the river and the bridges. ================================================================ New Event: Michigan Track and Field Championships, June 26, 2010 ================================================================ The new Meijer State Games of Michigan, Grand Rapids, June 25-27, 2010 includes a track and field meet: "This will be the first year of both this meet and the Meijer State Games of Michigan. The goal of this event is to create a Track & Field meet for all ages that will serve many purposes. With the timing of this meet high school athletes will be able to compete one more time only weeks after the State and Regional meets. Junior Olympic and USATF athletes will have a warm-up meet for the national championship meets held just a few weeks later. Regardless of times, heights, and medals, the Michigan Track & Field Championship is ultimately about having fun. Along with first-class competition, athletes will have the experience of a lifetime and be a part of an event that will grow and grow for years to come." http://stategamesofmichigan.com/sports/track-field =============================================================== Bette Wade Awarded Elite Athlete Development Grant by USA T&F Foundation ======================================= Bette Wade, UM '09, is an heptathlete who does it all; she runs, jumps, hurdles and throws. "INDIANAPOLIS (5-7-10) - The USA Track & Field Foundation has presented Elite Athlete Development Grants to eight athletes, Foundation Executive Director Tom Jackovic and Chairman, Bob Greifeld, announced today. Athletes receiving $4000 grants include first time grantees Tiffany Williams (400 meter hurdles), Nichole Denby (100 meter hurdles), Mary Wineberg (400 meters), Stevi Large (hammer throw) and Bettie Wade (heptathlon).

Recently, we stayed in one of the hotels on the list and can highly recommend the Doubletree Ft. Shelby. It's 0.1 miles from the start and finish lines at W. Fort and Second Streets. The historic Ft. Shelby has been rennovated and features spacious suites, free Wi-Fi Internet and a central location. The Detroit Free Press also recommends these hotels within walking distance of the start/finish line:
Holiday Inn Express - .31; Westin Book Cadillac - .35; Hilton Garden Inn - .78; Marriott at Ren-Cen, .86; Greektown Casino Hotel, .87. ======================================================== E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness: Apple or Pear? ======================================================== When it comes to the whole piece of fruit, pears are slightly higher in fiber, while apples have the edge on Vitamin C. Both are excellent choices for your summer fruit bowl because they tend not to attract fruit flies and can hold up against the warmer days. However, when it comes to body shape and health, pears are superior. People who primarily store fat in their hips, upper arms and thighs are said to have a pear shape, while those who tend to store greater amounts of fat in the abdomen are apple shape. The fat stored around the abdomen is called visceral fat and is associated with greater risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. While all of us gain visceral fat as we age, a healthy diet and regular exercise can reduce the visceral fat as long as you keep doing it. Research led by Slentz, in 2005 studied sedentary over weight men and women who followed a 30 minute walk program, 6 times/week for 8 months. Subjects lost 7% of their abdominal fat. However, those who stopped participating in a regular exercise program, increased their visceral fat stores by 9%. Their research not only suggested that apples benefit greatly from regular exercise, but that if you yo-yo exercise, you can do a lot of damage to your long term health.
