Destination Cleveland. This is a very cool city. http://michiganrunner.tv/2010cleveland/ =========================== MRN On the Road: Cleveland =========================== Philip Lagat, a Kenyan native who lives and trains in Ann Arbor, won the prestigious Rite Aid Cleveland 10K. The women's 10K winner was Firehiwot Dado of Ethiopia, who also won last weekend at the Fifth Third River Bank Run, where she broke Joan Benoit Samuelson's long-standing 25K course record. Congratulations to Dave Simms and ChronoTrack for the hugely successful B-Tag at all the Rite Aid Cleveland races. The B-Tag is included right in the bib-- no more attaching tags to your shoe and no more chips to return. See the Rite Aid Cleveland Half Marathon show for our discussion with Dave about the B-Tags. Numbers were up across the board in Cleveland and it's easy to see why: Jack and Ralph Staph hae 33 years of experience taking care of runners. They tweaked the course to bring in another beautiful neighborhood this year. We also found yet another favorite thing to do in Cleveland: the Cleveland Museum of Art was absolutely stunning. A new wing houses Picasso, Monet and contemporary art while the original 1916 building houses Rembrandt and El Greco paintings you'd recognize from art history classes. =================================================================== E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness: Too Much of a Good Thing? =================================================================== Now that Spring is in full swing, training is ramping up for many athletes. Some of you may have already participated in your first race of the season and are showing promising signs of improvement over last year. Motivation is high and burnout is low at this time of the year so why should you take a day off to rest? While others complain about finding the time and desire to workout, your body craves the endorphin rush that comes with a good sweat and your mind is programmed to “Don’t stop, push through”. Below are several warning signs that your training is becoming too much of a good thing. • Decreased performance • Loss of appetite • Regular headaches • Muscle soreness • Recurrent illness • Restless sleep • Your exercise takes away from friend, family and school time While putting the brakes on training for a day is hard to do this time of year, the positive benefits gained from giving your body a break are well worth it. Recovery days give your body time to top off all fluids, reload glycogen storage sites in your muscle and repair damaged tissues. It’s a good idea to keep an exercise journal if you tend to get lost with enthusiasm in your workouts each spring. Put

together a rough schedule for the week that includes cross training and at least one day of complete rest. Track activity, duration, intensity and how you feel you performed. If you notice a drop in performance, attitude or experience any of the overtraining symptoms above, take a day off, cross train or swap in low intensity activities for a day. If you are unable to attend the New Balance Girls on the Run 5k, you can still support Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan. SoleMates is the adult Charity Running program. We are looking for individuals or groups who have set an athletic goal for themselves, such as running a 5k, full marathon, or participating in a triathlon to fundraise for Girls on the Run at the same time. It is an easy and awesome way to help change a girl’s life, and reach a personal goal at the same time! There will be an informational meeting for the SoleMates program on Tuesday, June 8 at 6pm at Running Fit on Jackson Road in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A runner won the 44th Palos Verdes marathon wearing the Vibram FiveFinger Sprints. For some reason posters on the LetsRun.com message board has less to say about the runner's choice of footwear than about the rest of his outfit: arm warmers and no shirt: http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=3544405&page=0 ================================ Great Performances - Road Racing ================================ -- Indianapolis Mini Marathon, May 8, 2010 Our thanks to Steve Menovcik for alerted us to several great performances from last weekend: "In reviewing the May 12, 2010 Michigan Runner update, I did not see any mention of 3 great performances from Michigan runners at the Indianapolis Mini Marathon. I know the Fifth Third

River Bank Run was the same day, but Scott Schmick from Lansing, Dave Chomet from Berkley, and Andrea Pomaranski of Farmington Hills turned in stellar performances in very windy and less than ideal conditions in Indianapolis. Scott ran 1:07:03 and was 10th overall, Dave ran 1:14:20 and was the 2nd Master, and Andrea ran 1:14:26 and was the 3rd overall woman and first American woman. Performances definitely worth noting. I believe that was a PR for Scott and I know it was nearly a 4 minute PR for Andrea." Steve finished just a few seconds behind Dave Chomet in 1:14:36. -- Rite Aid Cleveland 10K, May 16, 2010 1st) Philip Lagat, 29:05 - $,5000 -- Rite Aid Cleveland Half Marathon, May 16, 2010 4th) Nicole Falvo, 1:24:08 -- Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, May 16, 2010 1st Master) Sarah Plaxton, 3:00:36 - $500 ==================================== Great Performances - Track and Field ==================================== -- Big Ten Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Indiana University, 5/14-5/16/2010 Men 1st) Kyron Foster / Michigan State, triple jump, 51-05.75 2nd) Frank Shotwell / Michigan, decathlon, 7379 3rd) Sean Pruitt / Michigan, hammer throw, 196-11 3rd) Spencer Beatty / Michigan State, 3000m steeplechase, 8:46.81 3rd) Shane Wells / Michigan State, 110m hurdles, 14.36 3rd) Maverick Darling / Wisconsin, 5000m run, 13:55.72 3rd) Michigan (Nicholas Neuman, Carl Buchanon, David St. Amant, Matthew Campbell), 4x400m relay, 3:08:48 Women 1st) Erin Pendleton / Michigan, discus throw, 184-09 1st) Rebecca Buichholtz / Michigan State, high jump, 5-10.75 2nd) Emily Pendleston / Michigan, discus throw, 179-00 2nd) Emily Pendleton / Michigan, hammer throw, 183-03 2nd) Charelise Davis / Michigan State, 200m dash, 23.78 2nd) Emily MacLeod / Michigan State, 5000m run, 16:16.7 -- Mid American Conference, Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Buffalo, NY, 5/13-5/15/2010 Men 1st) Eastern Michigan, Conference Outdoor Champions, 186 points 1st) Clint Allen / Eastern Michigan, 100m dash, 10.50 1st) Ackeem Forde / Eastern Michigan, 400m dash, 47.27 1st) Cole Sanseverino / Eastern Michigan, 1500m run, 3:50.93 1st) Terefe Ejigu / Eastern Michigan, 5000m run, 14:34.03
