I said newsletters, because our little company, GLSP, produces each year a total of 143 newsletters, hundreds of online videos for our seven Internet channels, six print and online issues of our Michigan Runner Magazine and four issues of our online Michigan Golfer Magazine. Like many of you, we have been dazzled by the graphically dramatic enewsletters that pop into our in box everyday. We have been pleased with our attempts to put out such a graphically pleasing newsletter the past few months. However, we thought we needed to back off this approach for the immediate future, to make sure that this is the direction we want to go and make sure we have sufficient resources for making these changes. In addition, the feedback we have received has been mixed, with excellent emails received on both sides of the issue. Another issue was pointed out by a subscriber, who noted that their corporate site would not allow him to click into the newsletter, which now resides on ISSUU. We added the ISSUU component, http://issuu.com/michiganrunner/docs/mrn4-21-10, a month ago, to lessen the cost of our newsletter that had tripled in cost due to the use of photographs within the newsletter. If you have not had a chance to check out ISSUU, you might want to look at it, as it is our delivery system for our Michigan Golfer and online Michigan Runner magazines. When we started putting up publications on ISSUU, we could also get a more reliable statistic as to how many times the magazine was being read. In years prior, we had to go into a software stat package and try to eek out some stats that would be understandable and attractive to potential advertisers. With the increasing sophistication of statistical software we found that the number of publications read was a tad clearer. However, the software also screened out bots and other search engine agents that constantly hit a website. One year, we had to cut our online circulation figures in half, due to that traffic being factored out. We want to marry our newsletters with ISSUU, as it will allow for the information included in the newsletter to be archived; however, in doing so, it creates another step for readers and sends them to a new site with different tools for reading the newsletter. Sound confusing? Well, it is. We have been publishing for over 30 years and created the world's first running and golf online magazines back in 1995 and the world's first online television network with channels for golf, running and skiing in 2001.
However, we live in a world of "What have you done lately?" While we also gear up to launch our new Twitter and Facebook pages, we just felt it was time to push back and chill for awhile. Therefore, here is your Michigan Running News, much as it has appeared for the past nine years. The graphic, pdf version is also available. In addition, this is our busy time of the year and also summertime in Michigan. We feel our staff needs to be playing golf more and going out for more runs in the sun. We will keep at it and will bring in our new changes over a longer period of time. Cheers. ==================================================================== Morgan, Wardian Running 85th Comrades Marathon, Sunday, May 30, 2010 ==================================================================== Comrades Marathon in South Africa is the world's oldest and most famous ultra marathon. This year's 89.28K distance is equivalent to 2 marathons plus a 5K. Among those in the field of 20,000 are Michigan Runner reporter, Gary Morgan and Michigan State alum, Michael Wardian. Morgan is running his second Comrades and hopes to beat his 2009 time of 9:42.14. Wardian, an accomplished and successful ultramarathoner, will be running his first Comrades. To the extent that anyone can predict ultra marathon performances, we expect Wardian to run better than 5:45:00 and finish among the top ten. Other notables include Josh Cox, American 50K record-holder, and Bart Yasso, Runner's World's Chief Running Officer (yes, that really is Bart's title.) Last year, Holland's Rick Ganzi was the first American to cross the finish line in 7:28:47. You can track progress of Comrades' runners via text message; sms runner's number to 38132 and the race will return five messages throughout the day. ============================================================================== NCAA D1 Track & Field Outdoor Championships, Round 1, Greensboro, NC, May 27-29 ============================================================================== NCAA Round 1, Greensboro, NC, May 27-29, 2010 - This year the regionals have been reduced to 2 regions: East & West and are called Round 1. Michigan athletes who qualify from the East Round 1 will join athletes from the West Round 1 at the NCAQA D1 Track & Field Outdoor Final Champion, Eugene, Oregon, June 9 - June 12, 2010. Only a few events lack a Michigan presence: women's triple jump and heptathlon and men's and women's javelin throw. Too bad; the javelin throw is one of my favorite events to watch.
