========================================================================= E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness: Fifth THird River Bank Run Tips ========================================================================= My friend is running her first Fifth Third River Bank Run this Saturday and asked for some tips. Here’s a mixture of nutrition plus mental. 1. Run your own race, don’t get caught up in the crowd. 2. Make sure you stay well hydrated this week while eating your normal higher percentage of fruits, vegetables , dairy and grain (carbohydrates). 3.

Download some good tunes you can lose yourself in.

4.

Get a good night’s rest , try for 10 hours. Do this all week if you can.

5. Don’t listen to people moan and groan; they will bring you down. Don’t negative talk yourself either. Remind yourself of those training runs in the snow, rain, and cold. You’re like the mailman, it took longer to give birth. 6. Eat 3-4 hours before. (bagel & egg, pancakes & syrup, Cliff Bar + juice or Gatorade/1 cup coffee) whatever your normal pre-long run meal was, nothing new. 7.

Drink 2 cups fluid 2 hours before. This gives you time to top off, yet time to eliminate (nice I know).

8.

Drink 1 cup fluid 15 minutes before race.

9.

Drink at every fluid station.

10. Don’t walk. It will kill your time and once you do it, you may continue to. Its better just to slow down your run. 11. If you plan to use the Gu at mile 6 and 12, drink water at mile 6, 7, 12, and 13-- not Gatorade or you will get Gu belly. You need 2 cups fluid for every Gu to prevent Gu belly, so I always assume 1 cup with the Gu and 1 cup at the next stop. If you have never used Gu, this might not be the time to try it. 12. Have fun! Its only 2-3 hours long. You will be over and done and enjoying an endorphin high over a warm cup of coffee and newspaper before noon. In an earlier life, before I became a photographer, I studied chemistry at the University of Michigan and pledged the chemistry fraternity, Alpha Chi Sigma, lived in its house for 2 years and even became chapter president for a year. During that time we had several boarders that included Kevin West and Fred Rasmussen, who were both runners. When I blew myself up doing a chemistry magic show for pledges to Alpha Chi Sigma, putting me into UM Hospital for 8 days and pretty much causing my change to photography, Kevin and Fred were major influences. They got me into marathon running when I didn’t know what a marathon was, although I had started running shorter races a few years before. Fred married my fraternity brother Marcia Moss (professional fraternities are coed), moved out of state and I lost touch with them. Kevin stayed in Michigan and I would see him a few times a year, almost always at races. He was very active in the running community, ran many marathons, and at one time became a coach, although I’ve forgotten which team. Fred found me via the Internet late last week and broke the news to me. Kevin had a heart attack and died while running in Maybury State Park in Northville on Wednesday. Memorial Services were held last weekend at the Charles Step Funeral Home. If it weren’t for Kevin I might not have started on the road to running all the marathons I have, nor having all the experiences that I count as some of the best of my life. I’ve lost a good friend, as has the running community, although in my memory, and when I run, Kevin will always be with me. ================================================ St Croix Triathlon Island Beauty Adventure, by Gary Morgan ==================================================

Triathletes await results on St. Croix.

Coming here to St Croix was much greater adventure than I thought it could ever be. I signed up for the St Croix Half Ironman just four days before the race and rented a bike from a local bike shop here. I got the last one they had on hand. On top of that, I haven’t swum in two years and had done no bike riding since last summer. I knew my hands were full. A half ironman is a long race, 1.2 mile swim and a 56 mile bike ride, then a 13.1 mile run for a total of 70.3 miles total. The great thing about doing it here in St Croix is that it’s in the Caribbean and It’s part of the USA. So no passport needed. So let this adventure begin. Came down Wednesday to get ready for the race. Get off the plane and it’s 92 and humidity is through the roof although it’s absolutely beautiful. Thursday morning the race organizers set up a swim session for the athletes to swim in the harbor. At least I got used to swimming a little. Did a little sightseeing in Christenseed the little town where the race started and finished. At 6 pm I ran in a little 5k race they had called the Paradise 5k-- just a nice jog to loosen up the legs, then called it a day. Friday did another swim on the course. Getting used to swimming. Friday evening they had a big street festival called Jump Up in town. It was a fun Caribbean evening on the island. Saturday picked up my bike and picked up my packet for the race, rode my rented bike to get used to that. I figured it would get me to through the race. Did the big pre race dinner and laid everything out for my race like goggles, bike tights, helmet, bike shoes, running shoes, and a few other things. Getting ready for a triathlon is as time consuming as racing it. Sunday and race day is here with a 4 am wakeup call. Get to the race start at 5 am and they ink your number on your arms and age on your legs. Put my bike on the rack and had all my gear out to change in the transition area. Then we all had to swim to an island that was the start area for the race. The sun came up, the pro’s took off at 6:30 and every two minutes another wave started. When I started I said to myself here it goes for all the marbles. The water was so salty that I couldn’t sink. I was great swimming in 80 degree water. I just had to keep trying to swim towards each buoy. I finally made it through the swim towards the back end of the pack. Thank God I was back on land. As I got on the Bike I knew 56 miles was going to be along haul on this Island. It's very hilly and hot here, although the scenery can make you forget about how hard you're working. There were plenty of spectators cheering us on. At the 21 mile mark I started riding up the Ironman's series most famous hill known as "the beast", a 600 foot climb that was over .8 of a mile. They even have a fire breathing dragon

painted on the road. I walked my bike up that hill. I wasn't killing myself for one hill. There were still 35 miles to ride. I'm glad I saved myself because the hills never stopped and it was over 90 degrees. I finally made it to the run portion of the race. By that time my legs were cooked so it was run-walk for 13.1 miles. It was like an oven over that distance. When I crossed that finish line it was a like I conquered Mt Everest. I felt great to finish but I don't want to do another one of these unless I put in a lot more training. At the post race awards dinner, the race director said this race had the hardest race conditions to ever race in. Still it was an awesome experince to do this event. I would highly recommend it to any distance athlete looking for a destination race. The day after the race I met a group from Michigan called TRI mission and we volunteered at a Boys and Girls Club for the day. We did some clean up work at the club, then took the kids to the Park grounds and did fitness games with them. It was a great way to give back to the local communitty. You can check out this group at http://trimission.com. What a way to finish a fantastic race weekend. Gotta come to St Croix, mon. ======================================= Hungry Duck Run is Monday, July 5, 2010 ======================================= The Hungry Duck Half Marathon and 5K in Brighton takes advantage of the Monday holiday over the July 4th weekend and will hold its races on Monday, July 5, 2010. =============================== Great Performances - Track and Field =============================== Exciting news from the Payton Jordan Invitational is Chris Solinsky's new American record in the 10,000m run: 26:59.60. The race was hyped as Galen Rupp's attempt to take down Meb Keflezighi's record (27:13.98). Rupp did beat Keflezighi's record, but ended up 4th in the race and without the record: 27:10.74. The race was Solinsky's first 10,000 on the track. In the same race, Simon Bairu's 27:23.63 set a new Candadian record. The loaded field included
